Shariar Khan is a noted journalist and has been with The Daily Star ever since he graduated in Journalism from Dhaka University in 1991. Regarded as an expert on the power and energy sector, he’s also a pioneering figure in bringing cartoons to the fore as a medium of sharp criticism of contemporary social and political scenes. As the title suggests, this book takes readers on a tour of the country’s politics and political leaders and various institutional irregularities causing immense suffering to common people. But what makes him a successful cartoonist is his unique way of combining his harsh criticism with wit and humour. জনপ্রিয় কার্টুন চরিত্র বেসিক আলীর জনক বিশিষ্ট কার্টুনিস্ট শাহরিয়ার খান। কার্টুনটির যাত্রা শুরু হয় ২০০৬ সালে। জাতীয় দৈনিক পত্রিকা প্রথম আলোর উপসম্পাদকীয় পাতায় নিয়মিত প্রকাশিত হয় এই কার্টুন। শুরু থেকেই কার্টুনটি পাঠকপ্রিয়তা পেয়ে আসছে। বেসিক আলী হলো বড় ছেলে। ‘আলী গ্রুপ অব ইন্ডাস্ট্রিজ’ এর মালিক, বিশিষ্ট ঋণখেলাপী ব্যবসায়ী তালিব আলীর বড় ছেলে। আলী পরিবারের অন্যান্য সদস্যরা হলো বেসিকের মা মলি আলী, যিনি একজন গৃহিণী, ছোট বোন নেচার আলী, যিনি মেডিক্যাল কলেজের শিক্ষার্থী, আর স্কুল ছাত্র ছোট ভাই ম্যাজিক আলী। এই পরিবারকে কেন্দ্র করে এই চরিত্রগুলোর জীবনের প্রতিফলনেই বেসিক আলী কার্টুন। পরিবার, প্রেম আর বন্ধুত্বের সম্পর্কের আবর্তে চলতে থাকা এ কার্টুনে আরো দুটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ চরিত্র হলো বেসিকের অফিস সহকর্মী রিয়া হক এবং ঘনিষ্ঠ ও আত্মভোলা বন্ধু হিল্লোল। শাহরিয়ার এর বই বেসিক আলী মূলত এই কার্টুনের সংকলন। সাধারণ পাঠকের প্রতিক্রিয়া এবং চাহিদার প্রেক্ষিতে ২০০৯ সালে পাঞ্জেরী প্রকাশনী থেকে বেসিক আলী নামে এই কার্টুনটির এক বছরের সংকলন প্রকাশিত হয়। প্রথম সংকলন ভালো সাড়া পাওয়ার পর থেকেই নিয়মিত বেসিক আলী সংকলন প্রকাশ হয়ে আসছে। শাহরিয়ার এর বই সমগ্র বেসিক আলী ছাড়াও আরো অনেক বই নিয়েই গড়ে উঠেছে। কমিক কার্টুন সিরিজ ‘বাবু’ তার অন্যতম। এছাড়াও শাহরিয়ার এর বই সমূহ এর মাঝে আছে ‘ষড়যন্ত্র’, ‘লাইলী’, ‘কিউব’, ‘দ্বিতীয়’, ‘বোকা ভূত’, ‘কল্পশিকারী’ ইত্যাদি। তিনি বর্তমানে বাংলাদেশ কার্টুনিস্ট অ্যাসোসিয়েশনের উপদেষ্টা পদে বহাল আছেন।
