I had a blast with this issue. Supergirl: Survive keeps finding the right balance between cosmic adventure and character. Watching young Kara do whatever it takes to protect baby Kal continues to be the emotional core of the series, and throwing Lobo and his gang into the mix was just plain fun. The fight with the Lanterns was chaotic in the best way, and the action never let up. Rod Reis’ painted artwork gives the whole book a unique, dreamlike look that makes every page stand out. Then that final-page reveal completely got me. I did not see it coming, and now I’m even more excited to see where this Elseworld goes next. Another really strong issue. 4.5⭐️

This second issue takes the story into a few interesting places for me.

I thought the opening page was very done. The focus on Kara's eyes was moving and beautifully done.

The story was kept moving forward with the flashback used well to pick up on the end previous issue. I thought the version of the Lanterns and the Lobo gang a nice twist on what would have been expected. (As an aside, I would have liked to have seen a Lantern turn up in the Supergirl movie just as a way to open up the DC cosmic universe) Then the ending brought a new direction for the story to follow with the next issue.

Overall, a very enjoyable series so far and this issue was a nice refresher from the other books I'm currently reading.

This series is surpassing all of my expectations in the best possible way, I love the art direction, I love the action, but above all I love the creative world that’s continually being built and how filled with life and different choices it is. This isn’t just a story about one different choice, Kara surviving Krypton with a baby Kal, and the effects that span from it…but a showcase of a universe that is fundamentally different from the main DCU we know. So many changes have already bee made in this universe which led to the story we are currently following and it’s awesome! But as we jump into this issue we do NOT pickup where we left off, instead we are 158 days since krypton exploded as we find Kara carrying bag Kal-El through a busy space terminal. It’s very clear how over stimulated and how hard it is to stay under the radar with a baby, as she only gets a moment to breathe before she spots someone following them. But then the book brings us back to the day krypton exploded, known as K-day, where we find Kara trying to defend herself and Kal-el with a laser gun from a giant orc looking creature on that green irradiated rock which was orbiting her planet. The laser pistol seems to have no effect and as she holds Kal-El’s carriage in her arms hoping for a miracle…it comes in a burst of green which takes the monster down. Kara looks over to not only see green lantern Abin Sur, but a United corps standing beside him!! How exciting is that?! This is what the current mainline GLC run is trying to achieve, the entire emotional spectrum working in unison and dripped out because of it! The gold accents in everyone’s suits look so good and hilariously Ch’P is part of the orange lantern corp. but aside from Abin, I cannot tell you the sigh of relief I breathed when I saw Saint Walker floating alongside him. They arrived right after krypton exploded and are here to help, it’s honestly such a comfort but I am so curious in seeing a world where the corps work together this closely. Each one offers their own input on the emotions they feel from the planet dying so close to them. Walker only feels one sliver of hope left from krypton in the form of Kara and Kal-El.

As we jump back to the terminal we find Kara rushing to a train right as the door closes in her face. She runs over to the nearest trustworthy fellow and asks for help as she believes a man is following her. He asks if they have anyone else around that can help, and she explains that they are on their own and refugees from krypton…I’m not sure if Kara needs glasses in this universe or what but this dude is the most untrustworthy looking guy ever. Literally has red eyes and a twisted mustache, don’t be telling him stuff like this. We then jump over to the multi colored atmosphere of OA, in this world the guardians appear as towering figures in a large circular room…I guess the corps were too scared to betray any of them in this universe and never broke off, lol. They are currently wrapping up a talk about the end of a conflict on New Genesis, a body was found in a river on Thanagar and the guardians are ready to wrap this all up. But Abin worries about discord growing among the ranks, he thinks they should take a proactive approach on New Genesis but the guardians stop and remind him that they are not a government body that seeks to control anyone. They only offer aid to sectors in crisis. Krypton was a world that blew itself up, maybe if the scans from the corps could have alerted them to an issue they could have saved more lives…instead they only arrive to cleanup the pieces. As the lanterns leave and Abin stays disgruntled, they are approached by a floating green robot which has an urgent message as they received an anonymous and verified tip that the lobo gang was spotted. Abin is immediately locked in to hunt these guys down, they have been on their radar for a while. And from my description of the man Kara walked off with earlier, it should come as no surprise that the red eyes is a signature of a Czarnian. Kara has been knocked out and Kal-El dragged along with the lobo gang as they set off to meet up with their leader…the main man. But one thing I am unsure about this gang is the identity of each member, Lobo is clearly the leader and I wouldn’t put it past him to name the gang after himself…but are the rest of the members standard Czarnians or clones made from the main Lobo’s blood? Not like Vril is in the universe to neuter Lobo this time to stop him from doing that, either that or Lobo isn’t the last Czarnian. Either way, the gang members toss Kara into the back of their ship and lock her away as they keep baby Kal-El up front to stop him from rattling around.

The group arrives on a desert western feeling world befitting their Wild West cowboy hats and outfits. As they let Kara out from the back, she comes out swinging and hits one of the gang members in the face with a pipe. She notices that her laser gun is in his front pocket as she rushes forward to grab it and demand they hand Kal-El over. Lobo does what she says, but only because she is lacking in options as well and he respects the moxie. She only has a few choices, she can leave and wander the desert until they dehydrate or they can come with the lobo gang which will definitely be worse as they are going to sell both of them off to the highest bidder and the word around the system is that Kryptonian blood makes a great stimulant. Lobo explains that his group is simply doing anything they can to survive…that word a constant reminder to Kara of to struggle she faces everyday. But as Lobo tries to soften the situation by mentioning whoever buys them will surely keep them alive for a bit…a green blast rockets down and throws them away from each other as Abin has led a group of lanterns, including my boy Saint Walker, to take the main man down! Saint Walker is the first to notice Kara and Kal-El, shocked that of all the places to run off to they end up here, lol. The lanterns of course try and keep things civil at first as they attempt to take the Lobo gang in without a fight…but as one of the members grabs Kal-El and the other grabs Kara’s gun all while Lobo shows off his own laser gun…a fight breaks out with laser fire and energy projections going everywhere. Saint Walker runs after Kara and Kal into the nearby building, only to find a member named Lobolt waiting to punch Walker to the ground. He completely catches our favorite lantern off guard as he takes him by the neck and smashes his head into the wall…killing him on the spot. The red lantern caught the tail end of this and as Walker’s ring leaves his finger the red lantern explodes into rage. A t-Rex head is formed out of him as Abin desperately yells for him to stop, even the yellow lantern recoils in fear as the projection filled with rage rips Lobolt and the entire building apart. Lobo and the two surviving members of his gang run off and get away in their ship as the lanterns stand outside of the burning building in horror. I love the art here as the lanterns are cast in shadow from the power of the flames, allowing their respective colors to shine through as an outline around their bodies. Abin is ripping into the red lantern for not standing down, the red lantern admitting he made a mistake, but the yellow lantern stops them as they look to the fire to see Blue Lantern Kara Zor-El walking out of the blaze with her brother protected and floating next to her!! HELL YES!! That’s what I’m talking about, the last hope for krypton makes the perfect blue lantern!! I love it!!

I think I would've rated this a little lower if it weren't for the art. One of the downsides of cross-promotional synergy is you get something like this where they feel they have to get Lobo involved because he's in the Supergirl movie. Then again, this series might not have been greenlit if it weren't for the movie.

Kara runs into the Lobo gang and we get a lot of action and antics. The story continues to be compelling and a fun spin on things. I do miss the survival aspect of the first issue but the cast of characters in this one is varied and enjoyable.

Seeing Lobo vs The Lanterns in a Western style gun/super power battle was so cool. Honestly , Western Lobo is pretty sick in general. Looking forward to seeing where this goes even more. :)
