This volume was eye opening and did some great work giving at least more backup and a somewhat straightforward origin story about the corrupting ways of power and lack thereof. So to start things off, the party lines have been drawn and we have Higashi Village (as represented by Hana) and the Kagemori Clan (turns out they're a clan who left the village way back when) teaming up to deal with the threat of Nishino Village (?) or maybe more like a group of outcasts from that village. The two villages existed mainly to create a pair of twins, Higashi was failing and asked to have a priestess sent their way and thus Yamaha was sent to the village. Her twin (the middle aged villain woman) had awakened Seal (uh oh, now there are two seals in the story,) and was running the show in Nishino Village (which is at the bottom of a reservoir in the present.) Yamaha had her lifespan sealed by her sister, but only when old. So with this all in place, we know more clearly the history of everything going on. The adults of Higashi Village are actually pretty terrible though, they all are asking when Yuru will die to see if he has the power. At the end of the volume, Yuru goes to the modern ruins of Higashi and yells angrily about the adults and how terrible they are. It was a fun and cathartic ending. The 4 panels at the end are always a treat. I feel like stepping away from the larger cast and just focusing on a few people this volume helped it be an easier read.

I thought I would read this volume since the anime has nearly caught up to it,* and I want to have more of the experience of having read the manga first, vs. reading the manga after watching the anime like with most series I follow (or followed, depending on quality).

I feel like the last episode that aired ended at the exact last chapter of the prior book, but it also feels like they missed something? I may just be misremembering bits, though, since I'm not exactly sitting down with the manga open while watching the anime. I guess I vaguely remember that Dera's dad has the same voice actor who apparently voices all the shitbag anime dads (which I thought of as Yukihira's dad while reading but is Fushiguro's dad, after fact-checking that, which is weird since he ALSO voices a lot of not-shitbag dad characters I like, including a shitbag not-dad, haha).

Anyway, not a lot I really feel inclined to comment on, except that twinsies became a LOT more of a focal point of the story, given the backstory they're told in this volume. Like, obsessive about twins, even! Also a lot of "suddenly the audience has a LOT of information the main characters don't" that will definitely make things a lot more complicated later on.

Well, even more complicated than who are actually the Good Guys here: Higashi village, Kagemori clan, Taderas... anyone? (Nishino village is probably definitely NOT.) Also feels on the nose that the Higashi village head is named "East Village" (Higashimura).

I don't know. It definitely continues the story, and it has a lot of things I like, but... it's still not Fullmetal Alchemist, and it's DEFINITELY not a book for complete newcomers to start on, at least without having at least seen SOME of the anime.

*I would have missed "getting ahead" if they'd aired the next episode, but I think they're on a hiatus this week as a "season break" kind of thing.

This one got darkkkkkkk at times but I loved it! We finally get some answers too!

Also, a more general series observation: This is way more of an ensemble cast story than Fullmetal Alchemist, in that while FMA is also an ensemble cast story, Ed and Al are very clearly the main characters and we're following them for like, 60-70% of the story. Yuru is probably *technically* the main character in this series but not in such an intimate way as Ed and Al - he gets about 40% of the story, if that, even though all the plotlines revolve around him and Asa (who gets even less page time - I hope she gets more soon!). So it was actually really nice in this volume that he gets a big emotional moment after visiting the village. I love the big and sprawling cast though - so many great characters! Also, the author's note at the end ('This is a story about people who've been ousted from "normal" society. What's considered "normal", anyway?') makes me really excited about where the story is going thematically.

4/5 Wow volume 10 is a huge lore dump. Yuru goes back to Higashi Village to learn what grandma Yamaha knows about the western group from Nagishi Village. We learn about the origin of the village and the fate of the last set of Break/Seal twins 400 years ago. So not a lot of action in this volume outside of flashbacks but it’s still all good stuff. However both of these villages can go fuck themselves.

There's a lot of lore here but I'm not sure how much it matters. We'll see if it ties in in the future but we spend a lot of time in flashbacks from before any of the main characters (or their parents) were born.

Ooooh, this volume is getting into the good stuff! It feels like this is the first major plot point since the twins finding each other, and I am excited for it.
