5⭐️ Absolutely fell in love with this story from the moment I picked it up, I loved that Eradin wasn’t a powerful princess who could fight assassins (even tho sometimes I want that too) it was beautiful and heart renching. Fen was refreshing and not what I initially thought he would be. The way the author built the connections between characters was well done and had me thinking I wasn’t invested in their lives but I was gripping my seat any time they were in danger. The treatment of the dragons made my heart ache, and shake my kindle wishing they’d leave them be. The cliffhanger had me yelling. No!! No!! No!! Can not wait to see what book 2 will do to me.

Such a phenomenal story
I love the way this author writes romantasy novels. She creates pictures with her words painting a world so rich and vibrant I feel like I am there with the characters. And all the emotions. Phew. You will definitely be feeling all of them on every page right along with these characters - laughing, crying, swooning, cringing, teeth gritting, knuckle biting, raging, breath holding, and cheering. The world building in this story is phenomenal, woven together scene by scene, layer by layer until it became a living breathing place full of three dimensional beings walking around in this dystopian society. Eradin works in the dragon aerie at the fortress and secretly steals herbs to treat her sick brother, Tolross. As a Commons, she must be small, useful, invisible and not have magic. As a royal and the heir apparent, Prince Fenian must be true to his Elite station and never color outside of the lines. But both Eradin and Fenian have trouble obeying the “rules” society has written for them. Eradian by stealing herbs, using magic, and bonding with a wild dragon. Fenian by taking care of non-elites in small unnoticed ways. They both will be part of the Scorching, a contest where the winner gets one wish granted by the Oracle. They come from different upbringings and levels of society when they enter the Scorching but the wish they plan to ask for is the same, to save someone they love. Oh boy was it easy to get lost in the captivating rhythm of this story, the mounting tension and suspense swirled together with the building romance, the bonding with the dragons, and the surprising plot twists. I loved every heart stopping and intense moment of it. This is a story of damaged and bruised but not broken people forced into society’s molds who find their way by owning their choices, recognizing their scars, finding their strength, embracing the path in front of them even when it’s hard, and deciding to be the best version of themselves. It’s a story about the power of choice. About choosing to fight anyway. I cannot wait to read the conclusion of this story especially after that ending.

I have been an arc reader for Alaya since her Kingdom of Bitter Magic series and an arc reader for Alaya I will always remain. She has the capacity to write such AMAZING Romantasy and every series is consistent while also unique, heartfelt, and continually evolving.
FH is the first in Alaya’s newest duology where dragons are slaves and magic is prestige. If you aren’t elite, you are commons and magic for you… is forbidden. A death sentence. When the money is at its end and the herbs to save her brother are dwindling, Eradin signs herself up for the deadly dragon race that could grant the winner a wish from the oracle. But no one knows what happened to the only commons to have survived, not to mention that Eradin herself doesn’t have a dragon nor know how to fly one. Oh, and the fact that commons are treated less than dirt.
So when Eradin suddenly bonds to a wild dragon and finds herself allied with the prince of said corrupt kingdom, she and Fen learn that everything they knew to be truth has been manipulated or wiped from history and if they want to see change… someone will have to survive to make a stand.
This book is such a different vibe from Alaya and yet true to her roots. We are have a SLOW burn, a soft but strong FMC, and a prince who is the last thing we expect. Not to mention a sassy dragon! I am SO excited for the next installment of this series and so in love with Fenian. His inner monologue was my absolute favorite! I’m sold for this series.

I received this book as an ARC from Alaya Wells
There was great story telling all throughout the book. I felt like I was there with the characters.
As far as the characters are concerned, I loved Eradin. She is smart, brave, and loyal to her family and friends. She refuses to play the role that society has thrust upon her. Eradin also has a low self worth which makes her very relatable. I almost found myself crying at the beginning of the story when her bond with her brother is described.
I felt that Fen played more of a supporting role rather than one of a MMC. He was a prince who was scared and didn’t exude much strength. As the story progressed he does mature but I feel his character played second fiddle to Eradin.
The uniqueness of the dragons kept me hooked. Selira and Aristus were beautifully portrayed. Their mysteriousness and loyalty were thrilling. They were strong, but forgiving.
There were huge cliffhangers at the end, which was a bit rushed. Hopefully all will be explained in the next book because I was disappointed in how much went unexplained. It was just a bit too open ended for my taste.
Overall this was a great read and I can’t wait to read more by this author.

The dragons in this story were amazing. Their role and perspective really gave a good dynamic to story, the dragons were not just an accessory but actually supporting characters.
True to all her books, the author has a delicious MMC who is trying to understand who he is as a person outside of any obligations and a strong kick-butt FMC. While there definitely were some plot twists that kept me up late turning pages, I do enjoy the little hints Alaya drops along the way so the reader has that feeling that something is not as is seems.
I hope the author opens book two for ARC readers, I'm not sure how I'm going to be able to wait until February for the conclusion of these series!

Ms. Wells what have you done…..? This book! THIS BOOK! I can’t even begin to explain what a magnificent, wonderful and gut wrenching journey you’ve taken me. Captivated by the first few pages, I knew I was in for the most interesting and exciting read! What an amazing ride! Sad, happy, disgusted, angry… and everything in between! I felt every emotion you placed on paper! The character growth was so good and so believable and so relatable. The heartbreaking storyline of certain dragons.💔 The interesting storyline of the wild ones. I sure hope we will meet more in your next masterpiece! The found family, magic, trials, mystery, and the growth of relationships is top tier.
BUT…. The ending!! How dare you leave us at that point of the story!!! 😩 I mean, I know why… but WHY? 😅 The release of book 2 can’t come fast enough and I am beyond excited to see how this story ends! 5 stars all the way! So thankful for allowing me to be an eARC reader for this book!

I couldn't put this book down!! The ending killed me the author left off on a huge cliffhanger. The story follows the FMC named Eradin who works on the stable taking care of the elite's dragons. She also has a 13yr old brother who is very sick so she steals herbs and while she was out she finds a wild dragon and instead of letting the elites hunt the dragon she saves it. The elites say they its time for a trial called the scorching which the last time they had one was 23yrs old. The scorching is a race and at the end of the race if you win you get one wish and if judged worthy it is granted so Eradin signs up for the race to save her brother. The MMC is Fenian and he is the prince of the kingdom. He sees Eradin and starts to fall for her, but also enters the race too. Eradin is on the commons side while he is on the elite side. Which makes this a very interesting book and when the race starts its very hard to put down

Feralheart has an addictive heart tug storyline. To simplify if you took the soul of Mulan, gave her a Prince Charming , mashed them into The Spark of the Everflame politics, with a slice of Bond of Hercules trials and then threw in dragon bonds this is the resultant story.
I loved that the FMC and the MMC were just really, really likable characters. Their individual motives are so admirable and you want them both to succeed. There is insta chemistry, forbidden romance, class divide , forbidden & allowed magic, chosen and forced bonds , loved family & found family, deadly trials , secrets, betrayals, politics , plot twists and it ends on a pretty devastating cliffhanger. It gave all the range of emotions and moved really quickly.
I am very interested to see how she picks up from here in the end of the duology. This was a great mood read.

I really loved this book! The trials were unique and unlike most other trial based books I’ve read before. I adored the MMC crossing class lines to enter the FMC's world, rather than the typical reverse. My favourite feature, though, was the dragon communication—instead of spoon-feeding the reader, they guide you through their raw emotions and feelings. Truly a brilliant read!

The dedication for this book says it all. Eradin is the most fierce and kind woman. @alayawellswrites does an amazing job building this world and its characters. Going on this journey with Eradin and Fenian was a seriously wild ride that touched my soul. That cliff hanger though... it just isn't fair I have to wait so long for the next book!
