They’re back - with a grudge to settle! Following the bestselling first and second volumes, here’s an all-new collection of artist Scott C’s strangely good- natured confrontations between his favorite movie characters. These memorable moments of melee deserve to be celebrated — once more, with feeling! Ladies and gentlemen, presenting: Great Showdowns - The Revenge. Featuring a foreword by acclaimed comedian Paul Scheer!
Scott Campbell (born December 28, 1973), known professionally as Scott C., is an American artist and production designer, known for his work for LucasArts and Double Fine Productions.
I wasn’t really impressed by this book. I liked the art a lot but I just didn’t get it. It was just movie characters standing next to each other. They weren’t doing anything. I thought they would be fighting or have some sort if mundane competitions against each other but they were just standing there. Also I’d call my self a pretty knowledgeable movie buff and I didn’t know at least half of the movies depicted. Based on the reviews a lot of others didn’t either. I think it would have been more enjoyable if the movie title was written under each panel and I don’t think it would have taken away from what the author/illustrator was trying to do. At least I don’t think so. Unless it was supposed to be a guessing game. I don’t know. Like I said. I really liked the art itself but the content just didn’t do it for me. I’d like to give two and a half stars but Goodreads screwed that up. So just know it’s a 2.5 Star book in my world.
With each collection, Campbell's showdowns become a bit more challenging.
While some jump out at you, with face-offs of characters you know, others are more of a puzzle, making you ponder the clues in the watercolor to figure them out.
Love Scott C.! I requested this title after Katharina featured it in one of her "YA new & cool" presentations in a youth services meeting, but I don't really think it's a YA title. There's little to no text and I think this would be enjoyed more by adults. I think teens might like it, but I really think it would circ better in the adult section. This type of book definitely isn't for everyone; it's pretty "inside baseball" with pop culture. If that's the kind of thing you like (and it is 100% the kind of thing I like), it's a blast.
I was really pleased that I got/deciphered/understood about 80% of these. There's no text so it's kind of like visual puzzle trivia. I love the illustration style, and I really really really want him to do another picture book because Hug Machine was one of my favorites from the past couple years.
I hope I can convince the library to buy the other two Great Showdown books! But I can always just read the tumblr too.
