The kiss! Oh my goodness, the kiss! And Rat knew immediately what Shion was up to, just from the way Shion kissed him! I love that Rat's seemingly always angry with Shion, but he's so angry because he loves Shion so very, very much and if something happened to Shion, especially on Rat's watch, Rat wouldn't be able to live with himself. Wonderful.
With this manga, the story has really come into its own in my opinion. I couldn't put it down till I was finished reading it (why are these so short?).
Shion and Nezumi are growing closer still and I feel like I especially know more about what Nezumi is feeling now. He seems to be fully aware of how deep his feelings for Shion are and he's desperately trying to deny them to himself and others. Of course it's not working and everyone and their hamsters knows about them by now.
I really liked to see some differences from the anime (that might originate in the novels - I wish I knew) like seeing more of what actually happened to Safu or team Shion getting the answers out of the high ranking No. 6 person.
"if i could turn back time and go back to that night... if i could go back to before i met you... i've thought about that time and time again and there's always only been one answer for me. no matter how many times i was offered the choice i'd still do the same thing. i'd still open that window and wait for you. [...] i'm glad i met you."
Ah yes, volume four. Think most shippers have this one memorized for the first chapter XD; (yeah I'm including myself there, so shush) I forgot that this was quite a violent volume, though of course things are only going downhill from hereon in that department. But this volume also had a lot of character moments, and this volume is where the story really starts to pick up. Safu though ;;; Safuuuu honeyyy. And I HATE THAT CREEPER IN HIS WHITE COAT SO MUCH. -cough- yeah, okay. At some points I was doubting the translation a bit - I can't compare to the original Japanese manga however, and I have the novels fresh on my mind, so maybe it's a manga-novel difference. Nothing actually annoying, anyway. Also, I just love Hino's drawing style a lot ok
Is this really five stars or am I just geeking because they actually kissed!!!🌈 I'm so used to manga being gay as hell but then not really, with the intense relationship between two boys just being friends so to actually get a whole ass kiss and all that??? Gagged me.
The way Nezumi knew exactly what he was up to with that kiss and said bet. I'm obsessed with their dynamic like Nezumi seems like such a moody, bitchy asshole sometimes because he cares about Shion so much. The world they live in is dangerous and Shion is so sheltered, he just wants to keep him safe.😭
Grumpy vs sunshine actually !!! Nezumi going ham, torturing a guy for information and Shion comes in like pls stop that, can I help.🥺👉👈
I love them all working together on this plan to save Shion's friend Safu, who has been taken by the government. The intensity of Nezumi wanting to save this girl he doesn't even know just for Shion??? Crying.
If that kiss wasn't enough to make me bounce off the walls, just the casual hand holding they did was more than enough.
Everyone is so violent like between Nezumi whooping Shion's ass then Inukashi stopping by to sic their dogs on Nezumi like please can we just all get along guys.😭
impressed does not even begin to describe how i'm feeling rn. in awe maybe?? i really didn't know what to expect when i first started this and i'm still wary of where we might end up (pls don't be tragic i swear to god) but i can see this easily becoming a classic for me. the character writing is just SO SOLID and endearing and human. the villians are incredibly one note and cartoonishly evil at the moment, but we'll see if that changes as we go or if i even end up caring about that cause as of now i really don't
Ese beso. La discusión. La incapacidad de tener una relación sana de ESTOS DOS IMBÉCILES. Cuando se refieren a Nezumi como Demonio (Y SÍ). Que buen volumen.
Okay, I've read through volume 4, and I'm giving up on this series. It was interesting enough to want to find out what happened, but not enough to keep me reading beyond what we already had checked out from the library. I do not recommend them. I haven't liked the dynamics that have been emerging in volumes 2-4. I'm not saying every character has to be nice, or even nice all the time, but I wasn't happy with one character being abused (hit, talked down to, kicked, etc.), and the other character just taking it and begging for the friendship to continue. I know it's part of the plot and characterization, but it just made me upset that they acted like this and that the one didn't stand up for himself enough. It is not okay to be treated like this. Ever. Yes, it happens in real life. I get it. It just makes me more angry to see it in literature. It's left for the readers to judge as the relationship is show without commentary or bias, but since I won't stand for it in real life, I won't in literature either.
Because I was pre-reading this series for my almost 12 year old who loves manga, I was uncomfortable with the same-sex relationship innuendos that were introduced in volumes 3 and 4. It's not that I'm homophobic or anything. I just don't see it necessary to the plot (unless this is the focus of where the plot is heading, and if so, my son is too young for these themes). I won't be encouraging him to read this series.
All that aside, I did enjoy the references to classical literature, especially Shakespeare. And I enjoyed the art work.
So the whole yaoi debate came to a head in this volume, and let me tell you how excited it made me. My reaction may have been a little over the top, but I was excited. I was not expecting it, and then it happened, and I’m pretty happy about it.
I really like Shion. He’s sweet, and he’s getting tougher, even while still being a sweetheart.
Dogkeeper is still really great. I like her, and want to know more about her. Rat, on the other hand, I do like, but also makes me really wary. Because he’s dangerous, and he’s violent, and something bad is going to happen with him. I know it, and I’m not looking forward to it. Especially since it’s going to involve Shion, and it’s going to hurt him, and I’m not going to like it.
The group has a plan to get Safu, and it’s underway. Things are moving along steadily, and I’m excited, but also wary, because bad things are coming, I can tell. Including the cliffhanger, which I can tell is going to be bad.
I’m really enjoying this series. I’m excited to read more, and since I know the series is ending soon, and I have quite a few books to catch up on, I look forward to getting a splurge read of it.
This volume been serving a real good dynamic between Shion and Nezumi.
I love both of them so much 🤧✋🏼
As for the plot, this one kinda felt like transition for something big about to happen next. Well, after all..the end just TOTAL CLIFFHANGER (I’m resisting myself to read the next one right away cause it’s bedtime already).
The A-team of four them aaahh I can’t wait to discover more.
Of Shion and Nezumi, despite it seems like Nezumi is Shion’s saviour, Nezumi relearn life from Shion’s perspective.
To be real honest, gosh, THESE TWO IS JUST ‘GIVE AND TAKE’ DYNAMIC.
the author has said that they drew inspiration from banana fish and i can definitely see ash lynx being the stepping stone for nezumi's personality. and that doesn't take anything away from either of them, but rather build a queer fort thanks to bf for authors to play in, to see what queerness looks like in any and all of their characters. it feels a bit like home.
To put it simply, this manga is beautiful. Not only in terms of the art but the story too! I am constantly in awe of it, and the emotions this is making me feel? I don't even know where to start. Seriously, the relationship between Nezumi (Rat - I watched the anime first [stupid I know] but I can't get out of the habit of calling him Nezumi) and Shion is so beautifully complex, and the way it is portrayed feels so very real. I just have so many feelings about this manga, I love it so much!
Also what is with the ending of this volume!? Rude! Cliffhangers are just unfair! I am seriously considering a trip into the city tomorrow to get the next volume, cause even though I know what happens to some extent I just can't stop reading!
Shion discovered that his friend is in horrible danger. Rat battles with himself about what to do about Shion's discovery. Will he help Shion rescue her or will he cut Shion loose and wash his hands of the whole thing? Shion has more friends than he realizes. Will he ask them for help or try to go it alone?
Once the choices are made, can everyone live with the decisions that they made and the things they will have to do? On top of all of that worry, Rat collapses!
This story just keeps getting better! The characters are so complex and their motives and reasoning still aren't clear. I can't wait for each new volume to see what happens next!
Shion wants to protect everyone and save Safu from the Correctional Facility. The boy think it is better to go on his own but Nezumi find out and confront him. The boys agree to work together, as equal to form a plan, since Shion is feed up of being shield away from everything.
Of course, they have different point of view and methods when they kidnap a senior Officer of administration for questioning.
Still, the two get closer in this volume Things are finally moving.
This volume end in an cliffhanger, so I will get to the next one right away !
Shion and Nezumi really are perfectly balanced against each other. Shion feels everything so openly and Nezumi is so goddamn repressed that he can only express himself through violence. Nezumi being so used to doing this that when Shion kisses him he INSTANTLY senses that he’s trying to hide something. Shion’s empathic interrogation methods working better than Nezumi’s torture. They’re starting to rub off on each other, but still remaining themselves. Also at the end with Shion saying he’ll go insane if he loses nezumi now 😭😭 they’re so entangled in each other. I love toxic gay people so much 🥰💕

2nd read: This volume has my favorite cover, Shion and Nezumi are my favs ☹️. This however is the last volume before there’s major changes and the tone becomes a lot darker…
Other things to mention: Goodbye kiss?! Don’t do that to me 😔
Lastly I forgot about that ending, what the hell is going on with Nezumi? I don’t know. Should I know? Yes I’ve read this before but my brain has forget and I will experience it for the first time again 💪
