This is a great book for anyone thinking of creating a Japanese garden. Chesshire starts with the cultural, historical & spiritual factors that have influenced the evolution of the garden style, & does so in a way comprehensible to my little Western brain, relating what's essential in order for the reader to design their own authentic space.

Chesshire gives easily understood instructions on all aspect of the garden from stone to plants, with excellent accompanying photographs & drawings - much of this nuts & bolts information can be used in a wide variety of garden styles. He also provides options for completing a project that will reduce the budget or fit a more modern concept, while at the same time, not sacrificing the spirit of the Japanese garden.

Another great gardening book to learn from, use as a reference, a source of inspiration or simply flip through for all the wonderful photos of gardens from around the world. Highly recommend it.
