Shane's Fall

Rate this book
"You know what it's like, don't you? When the pain goes so deep inside that you need to try and find a way to let some of it out? But you don't actually let it out, do you? You become someone else - someone who doesn't hurt, someone who doesn't have to hide." --Savannah

Shane Matthews loves women, sex and money and as a professional escort, he gets to have all three whenever he wants. So what if he’s not the same, naive person he was when he started – it’s what he’s good at. But life is catching up with Shane and he’s losing the battle against an addiction that has haunted him for years. He’s managed to keep the truth from his friends and family, but the pressure of pretending to be perfect may just be too much.

Savannah Bradshaw needs to get her life back under control before the fear and pain consume her. A brutal assault from someone she trusted has left her fearing sex and men and the dangerous method she uses to cope is stealing her life. She needs Shane to show her how to escape the pain, but as his best friend’s little sister, he’s keeping her at arm’s length.

Savannah’s desperate plan to bring them together for one night has Shane agreeing to show her the pleasure her body can experience, but she has to agree to his terms. Giving her what she needs should be easy, as long as he doesn’t do something stupid like fall in love with her…

***This is Book 2 in the series but can be read as a stand-alone story - no cliffhangers. However, more enjoyment can be gained by reading the series in order starting with Book 1, Gabriel's Rule. (Note: Shane's Fall DOES contain spoilers for events first presented in Gabriel's Rule)***

Bellissimo!!!

⭐ 3 stars of the "not necessarily great, yet somewhat entertaining" variety ⭐

This was... definitely an improvement from book one, that's for sure! Both in terms of writing, narration (no odd pov jumps in the middle of a paragraph now) and character development. And even if I still didn't find myself as invested with the main characters as I would've liked, their romance was entertaining enough to experience.

The story, however, did drag a lot for me in parts due to the repetitive back and forward of the relationship (a repeated use of "well, I'm not good enough for him/her" from the first book, although at least it felt like more of a natural struggle here). The reveal at the end was also telegraphed from the very beginning, making it lose the "impact" it could've perhaps had. Plus once again the use of an almost comically telenovela-like villain. Still shaking my head at that one.

Yet there were still good things too! The friendship between the group was one of my favorite parts, and oddly enough, I found myself liking and relating with Gabe and Riley a lot more as side characters than as MCs. Then there was the exploration and healing of the trauma for both MCs, which satisfied my angst and healing-comfort loving heart. Specially with Savannah's journey, whose slow progress in that department actually had me more invested than the actual romance lol.

All in all, I'm actually a little excited about the next book too, and finishing this series to get to the "main event" of Sloane Kennedy's other interconnected stories is feeling like less of a chore.

Hopefully the next book continues to improve!

3.5 stars. I enjoyed this one more than the first book in this series. It's just frustrating how ott and dramatic these books are.

Deciding to DNF and not finish this particular series. I’m moving on to the next part of this universe and just accepting I won’t get the backstory from these books. I just don’t care enough

I'm a little nervous to keep reading this author, because these first two books have not been good. I'm trying to keep in mind that these are older books, so they have to get better as we go along, right?!?!?

I started to struggle immediately in this one. The fact that he says he's wanted her from the moment he met her did it. There is zero connection between these two. No lead up...nothing. I get the premise on why she was with him at that moment, but this statement from him was cringy.

There were moments I liked, but more that I didn't. I will try the next book just because I'm trying to be hopeful. Plus, it's the first M/M and I'm hoping that will work for me.

I am so pleased to see Ms. Kennedy growing in her writing, as I knew she would. Her first book in this series didn't do her abilities justice and this one, while not yet the quality she eventually reaches, is leaps and bounds ahead of the curve.

Gone is the distracting head hopping (YAY!!!), something that happens to be one of my personal pet peeves, and in its place, a clear growth in both writing ability and character/world building emerged.

I found it significantly easier to bond with her MCs, and was surprised to find that I enjoyed Gabe and Riley (the MCs from the first book in the series) far more in this book, even in their side character role. Ms. Kennedy's abilities are shining through, and I am thrilled. I loved Shattered so much, that I had dedicated myself to reading the whole series, but was admittedly a little bemused by Gabriel's Rule. It had an entirely different feel than her most recent work... which is to be expected. Writers grow with experience, and Ms. Kennedy is perfect proof of that.

I recommend this book, something I was hesitant to say about the last, and after reading this, I can honestly say I now feel slightly different about that response. Although each of these stories can be standalone, I believe this one was more powerful because I had read the first.

I look forward to continuing on with this series... especially since the majority of those books that remain are of the m/m romance genre, which is my personal favorite.

Kudos, Ms. Kennedy, for the inspiration your growth provides! Onwards to the next... :)

I liked this better than the first book in the series. There really wasn't much mention of Shane's side profession at all in this story which actually worked for me. His escort time wasn't important and since I don't love those storylines I was happy to see that really take a backseat other than as an impetus to discover what was going on with Savannah.

Both of these characters are damaged in different ways and I felt like they were good for each other. They helped each other face the pain in their pasts and start taking down their personal demons. The side line thriller-esq story points were slightly unnecessary, especially as they seemed very heightened and came out of nowhere. Sure they wrapped up Savannah's past, but some of the choices felt picked just for dramatic effect. But they threw our couple together in a nice way and had them facing things and realizing how much being together meant.

All in all I enjoyed this read and am really looking forward to the next book in the series. I want Logan's story. :)

The series gets better with each book. If you are looking for a story with a strong hurt comfort theme this one is right for you. It is written with a dual POV, so the reader gets a chance to really feel. The overall feeling is similar to the first book but since this one is a lot longer you have a chance to really connect with the people and get to know them. The supporting cast is great. We meet Riley and Gabe again and see how they are doing. Like book one this one can be read as a standalone and has a HEA.

I started reading these books to get to the Lucy Lennox/Sloane Kennedy crossover in the Made Marian series, but these books are just terrible. They are full of over-the-top drama and melodrama (which is even worse). I'm going to give the last one in this series a try, but if there's no improvement, I just can't see myself continuing on with her books. The combination of poor grammar and OTT plotlines is a little too much for me.

Savannah and Shane… So broken, yet so perfect

This story is a hard read from the beginning to the end, but it is so worth it. Neither Shane nor Savannah have had it easy, yet they come together and start fitting their broken pieces together to make something new and beautiful.

I love watching as broken characters overcome obstacles and find a way through the darkness. I won’t elaborate on the darkness in Shane and Savannah each have to navigate, but if you have triggers, I’d be sure to check the warnings.

Consigliato ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I definitely liked this one more than the first one (Gabriel's Rule), but there were parts that were just so so for me. I liked the premise and the beginning definitely had me more intrigued than when I started Gabriel's Rule. For some reason though, by the half way mark I had resigned to the fact that I was only going to finish it to get the background for Logan's book. I can't really put my finger on why I wasn't connecting with the characters but it seemed that I was more interested with Gabe, Riley, and Logan than I was with Shane and Savannah. (This could have totally been a me problem as well. I wasn't in the best of moods while reading some of this book.) HOWEVER, I am very glad I decided to push through and finish it because I LOVED the ending! I don't know what clicked but something did and the last 30% or so was SO GOOD!! It could have been the drama, it could have been Shane finally coming to terms with himself and his feelings, or it could have been their little found family finally coming back together. Who knows, but the ending really saved the rest of the book for me.

Overall, I thought this was a solid read and you can definitely see Kennedy's writing improving. I am actually super excited to read Logan's book and I'm hoping it's even better than this one!

Again with the escort and the abuse/hurt past - getting me all into a MF book. So rare nowadays. These are pretty addictive (I've been reading steadily for a couple of hours and I finished this series and am ready to start the next). I'll admit my favorite of this series is Logan's (Book #3) but that's because I found the heat between he and Dom to be scorching. Shane has a lot of issues in this book - could have gotten rid of the girlfriend earlier (she didn't do much frankly and pulled a bit away from the story). Savannah has issues too - two people who are drowning in their own sorrows and pain. Their fight back was engrossing.

Aww, Shane, we fell in love with you in Gabriel's Rule, and now we get to see how beautifully broken you are inside too. Looking back, I can't tell if liked this book more than the first, I keep going back and forth, then am like, no choosing favorites, they were both just so good! Shane has problems, but that's what we like with our leading men, right? Beautiful men with issues? That make it hurt so good? Shane, you stubborn idiot, just let Savannah fix you! Le sigh. Another winner from Sloane Kennedy and clinching her as a new one-click author for me. I love it when I find new great authors like this!

The complaints I had about the previous book in this series have absolutely no relevance here. The writing is excellent, the characters are well-developed, and the plot and subplots expand to include all the major players in this series. Gabe and Riley are back in lovely supporting roles as Shane and Savannah deal with their various demons. And both heroes have more than their share of demons.

As the story began to play out, I thought it would irritate me. However, it quickly becomes apparent that Shane is doing what is in his limited power to help Savannah recover from the trauma that occurs before the book starts. Though sex is involved, it’s not as simple as “magical healing cock.” I appreciate that Shane also pushes Savannah into other healing methods, such as seeing a therapist and taking self-defense lessons.

Shane is also not without his wounds, and Kennedy reveals the tragic moments of his past and how they affect his future in snippets that broke my heart more than they teased. Even Shane’s parents are not left as the unfeeling monsters they first appear, and we also get closure on Gabe’s mother that directly impacts the plot of this current book.

These three friends have been through so much in their relatively young lives, so it’s lovely to watch their happily ever afters come into grasp. The escort work they do is never meant to titillate the reader but is instead used as a thematic element that gives more depth to the characters. This book lays the framework for the final book in this trilogy and the next connected series, and I can’t wait to read more in this intricate, sexy universe.

Out of all of 'The Escort' books, "Shane's Fall" has been by far my favorite. Getting to read the story play out between Shane and Savannah as they both fight their demons in order to conquer their past, and inevitably head towards a better future, was both enlightening and insightful. I relate quite a lot to Savannah, having been through something extremely similar, I found Sloane's writing to be up to par and excelling with her depiction of the hardships, and pain that Savannah had to go through in order to touch someone. The scars that she had to deal with on her body, and the ever present urge to cut the pain away was all so familiar and yet depicted so well that I have to give kudos to the author who could pull it off without seeming condescending in the slightest. This is a topic that is depicted more as something that is inaccurate more often than not. The urge to cut is something that never fully goes away, and the memories of rape will stick with the survivor forever. The ability to tell the ones you love is nigh unto impossible and I feel like Sloane did a STELLAR job portraying this. This book was AMAZING. I LOVE that Shane and Savannah found their happily ever after, and I cannot wait to read more Sloane Kennedy books in the near future! <3

Trigger city; emotional, sensual, and well crafted

This is one of the books - series, really - where characters have had All The Bad Things happen to them. It's also a series about conquering All The Bad Things and finding your HEA amid a close knit group of friends.

Trigger warnings without total spoilers: sex, abuse, sex, addiction, sex, family drama, sex, more abuse, sex, criminal activity, sex, fighting, sex, more criminal activity, and... I may have missed some of the sex. I appreciate that it's not magic genitals that heal the characters from past trauma here - friends, therapy, actual food, and exercise all play a part. Healing isn't immediate or easy, which makes this plausible though sometimes difficult to read.

An example of the writing:
"She turned to face him and saw that he was holding the water out to her. He looked so young and so old at the same time. She wondered what had done that to him. As a girl, she hadn’t been attuned enough to recognize how life could beat you down so she couldn’t be sure if he had always been like this, alive but not living; in the present but not in the moment. He looked how she felt – broken and lost."

I really liked this book more than I thought I would. Shane is usually the type of MMC I hate - indecisive, weak, a manwhore (well a literal whore I guess but he loves his job). Yet somehow I still liked him and found his love for Savannah to be engrossing and realistic. The sex scenes were hot also. I didn't once find myself wishing he'd fall off a building and MFC would find someone else. Which is weird cause honestly the guy doesn't have the greatest moral compass.

Savannah was the same. Normally a character I would roll my eyes at because she's timid, hesitant and basically too kind-hearted, but I really enjoyed her character growth both emotionally and sexually. Normally I hate manwhore/almost virgin tropes but this one worked based mostly on Savannah's situation and Shane's reasoning. There was also just enough angst for the soap fan in me too love, but not so much I got lost in the drama.

As usually I am reading books out of sequence but even so I never got lost or confused in this one not having read the previous one so that was appreciated as well.

2023: 3 stars

1. Characters: ★★★☆☆ (In the end they were a bit too intense for me, but overall I liked their interactions and actually kinda liked them as people. Some of their decisions were still questionable but there was also moments I thought they actually were better together than appart)
2. Atmosphere: ★★★☆☆ (As secondary characters Riley and Gabe were more tolerable and actually liked how the other secondary characters were dealt with. Also Dom and Sylvie seemed really nice)
3. Writing: ★★★☆☆ (Definitely better than in the first one, even if I skimmed a bit on the sex scene parts)
4. Plot: ★★★☆☆ (It got a bit overly dramatic by the last 10% of the story but other than that I think there were some nice bonding moments)
5. Enjoyment: ★★★☆☆ (Honestly I'm not sure if this book was really better or if I just lowered my expectations after the first one... either way I found this way much more enjoyable)

Man, there was constant angst in this book. To be honest, I didn't love either of the MCs. Shane was a turd to his friends and Savannah was just too damaged. Also, there was OW drama that I just hate. I found it ridiculous that Anyway, I will say that Sloane Kennedy does write some seriously damaged characters. I hope not all her characters are like this throughout all of her books, it would get a little annoying.

Emotional Roller Coaster!

I started reading this book expecting plenty of hot steamy scenes. Boy did it deliver! Shane and Savannah are hot, hot, HOT! But that wasn't the only thing offered here. A very marred family dealing with heartbreak, addiction, loss, love, friendship, and family issues abound. I laughed my tail off and cried my eyes out and held onto the edge of my tablet in fear, sometimes all in the same chapter! I am definitely hooked on this author now! If you haven't read Sloane Kennedy yet, what on earth are you waiting for? Gabriel's Rule was great, but Shane's Fall touched a special place in my heart on so many levels. I can't wait to start Logan's Need next. After all he has been through so far, he deserves a bit of happiness too!
