When Noralie Locke vowed to find a way out of the ragged, rat-infested city streets, she didn’t think death would be the answer. But the Fates had different plans, and when Noralie meets her untimely demise, she suddenly gets a second chance at a better life.
The Shadow Realms offer Noralie a place of safety, comfort, and genuine companionship. As a Death Warden, she escorts the newly dead to the light and fights the Soul Hunters who want them for the dark. As a woman, she finds herself navigating the perils of love, which are just as complicated and messy in the afterlife. Especially when she is assigned to the most mysterious, broody, and handsome warden on this side of the realm.
But a shocking betrayal and a shift in power between good and evil begin to threaten her new world and the lives of the only family Noralie has ever known. When her charges are targeted, she suspects the hunters are after more than just their souls. To learn the truth, she’s forced to face the man who chose the darkness over her. Yet while their lost relationship still haunts her broken heart, a mysterious creature and a new warden appear with devastating secrets of their own that will force Noralie to make an impossible decision about her future.
Of Death and Souls is the first book of The Shadow Realms duology that follows spirited heroine Noralie Locke as she navigates her new reality in the afterlife—a world that seems too good to be true. This slow burn romantasy features strong themes of good versus evil and right versus wrong, with twists and turns that will leave readers wondering which side to choose. This book will appeal to fans of fantasy worlds and quick-witted characters such as those found in The Crimson Moth series, The Kindred Curse Saga, and Crescent City.

This one just didnt hit for me. I love stories about the afterlife and books that explore that concept. The premise for the book is a decent one, I just didnt really love the execution.
It's a bit if an insta-love story. There's very little development and build-up between the MMC and the FMC. Its a mentor/mentee deal and he hoes from nit wanting to work with her at all, to immediately flirting, smirking and joking around - which didnt make sense. Later once he betrays her and their "side" of the afterlife, a year later she is still yearning and waiting for him. I dinr feel like there was enough relationship building, it wad all too easy and just "was". Later in the book, its more of the same with another male love interest.
I did struggle to not DNF this book. I took a break and then came back to finish it because I really avoid DNF'ing ARCs when I can. Again, the premise is there and I love the idea of the ligh vs. dark side of the afterlife, for me, it just needed more develoment and an actual stake in the relationships that were present.
Noralie is a wonderful FMC. I loved her sassy personality, and inquisitive mind. Following her brief life into death was sad, yet, also the core of the story. She meets Wulf, and forms a complex relationship with him.
I loved Wulf and his moral complexities. I still have so many questions, but, I suspect many will be answered in the next book.
Of Death and Souls had some amazing world-building, character growth, and a unique afterlife that will have you begging to know more.
I had the pleasure of receiving this as an e-ARC and voluntarily will be giving my honest review. I absolutely loved this story!! The world building and character build up was phenomenal!! The chemistry between Noralie and Wulfe was absolutely amazing! We have Death Wardens, Soul Hunters, different realms, with magic, souls and creatures and ancient rules!! Loved all the characters and their build up!! I can’t wait for book 2 to see how it takes place!! What an ending leaving so many questions!!

Of Death and Souls took a concept I already love—the afterlife—and turned it into an entire fantasy world with its own rules, magic, politics, secrets, and a very questionable definition of who the “good guys” actually are. The premise immediately pulled me in, but what kept me reading was realizing fairly quickly that almost nothing in this world is as straightforward as Noralie is initially led to believe. The author describes The Shadow Realms as a romantasy duology set in the afterlife, and this absolutely feels like the beginning of something much bigger.
Noralie was such an easy FMC for me to root for. She’s curious, stubborn, impulsive, compassionate, and seemingly incapable of accepting an answer just because someone in authority tells her it’s true. I especially loved that her journey isn’t simply about romance. She’s trying to understand this completely unfamiliar existence while simultaneously beginning to question the systems and beliefs everyone around her seems to accept without hesitation.
And then there is Wulfe.
Sir.
I am apparently extremely predictable because give me an emotionally unavailable, secretive man who has lived far too long, carries approximately 700 years of emotional baggage, and absolutely does NOT want to develop feelings for the FMC…and apparently I will sit down and behave. 😂
Their relationship is a true slow burn, and I appreciated that. The attraction is there, but their connection develops through trust, friendship, vulnerability, frustration, and all those tiny moments where you realize someone cares long before they’re willing to admit it themselves. Wulfe is complicated and guarded, while Noralie brings this warmth and curiosity into his existence that slowly begins cracking through those walls.
The worldbuilding was probably my favorite part. Death Wardens, Soul Hunters, different realms, souls, magic, creatures, ancient rules—I kept thinking I understood how everything worked and then discovering another little piece that made me question it again. I LOVE fantasy where the line between light and darkness gradually becomes less obvious, and this book plays with that beautifully.
There are also some genuinely wonderful secondary characters and relationships here. The friendships matter. The loyalties matter. And as Noralie’s world expands, so does the emotional complexity of the story. I became invested in people I wasn’t expecting to care about, which made some later moments hit considerably harder than I was prepared for.
My only real criticism is the pacing through portions of the middle. There is a lot of mythology and worldbuilding to establish in a first book, and occasionally the training and explanations slowed things down when I wanted the larger mystery to keep moving. But once the story starts bringing those pieces together, I understood why so much groundwork had been laid.
And that final stretch?
Ma’am.
Suddenly I’m questioning EVERYONE. 😂
This is one of those fantasy books where finishing it doesn’t leave you with fewer questions—it leaves you with approximately 47 additional ones. Who can actually be trusted? How much of what Noralie has been taught is true? What is really happening within the Shadow Realms? And exactly how long am I expected to wait for book two??
I need answers.
4.5 stars rounded up to 5 because the world was intriguing, the slow burn got me, and apparently dying does not exempt a woman from encountering emotionally complicated men.
Thank you to A.L. Garr for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
Unfortunately this is going to be a no for me. It had me at the beginning but after part two the FMC did a complete 180. She stopped questioning things and just took everything she was told, unlike how she did at the beginning of the book. I think the pacing for me was a little slow as well. I was also in a reading slump during this one so.....do with that what you will.
Wow I loved every aspect of this world building. There were so many times it felt like my heart was ripped out for the main FMC. The tension between characters I ate up loved every tense moment with them .Can't wait to see what happens in the next book. Mvp of the book is definitely Charles what baddie he is!
"We scrounged and kicked and fought our way through life with the hopes that someday we would see something better. Even if it meant we had to wait for Death to come and take us way from here." - Of Death and Souls
I absolutely LOVED this book. I have to admit that one of my super close friends hyped up this book to me, and she was absolutely not wrong about it either. I enjoyed the characters so much that I'm really sad I can't continue to read more immediately.
One of the things that drew me to this book (besides my friend) was the absolutely GORGEOUS freaking cover. It was so beautiful that I immediately wanted to read it anyways. Now that I've read it, I can see how this cover is perfect.
I absolutely loved the FMC, Noralie. She was fierce, a baddie, and she genuinely cared for people. She was a much more "soft" FMC than the usual stealthy assassin, and I was here for it - I think stealthy assassin is too overdone and overrated now. I appreciated that Noralie cared about people, as well as herself, and that she focused on what she could do versus whining over her circumstances. This really drew me to her, as I really enjoyed her learning about her new world. I also very much loved the MMC, Wulfe. He was protective, caring, and a little broody.
While I loved the male characters of Wulfe and Blaine, I have to admit again that it was the side characters that stole the show for me. Annistyn and Timmons are genuinely true friends of Noralie. So much to the point of Annistyn putting Noralie in her much needed place.
There are so many points in the story where I had to pause and go talk to my friend as I was so astounded by the different things that happened.
I am a huge high fantasy reader, and I absolutely loved this book. I am extremely intrigued to read the second book for more lore drops and for all of my questions. THEY NEED TO BE ANSWERED.
Overall, I absolutely loved this book, and I will absolutely be continuing to read from this author. Sign me up for every single book!
The yearning was Powerful!!!! 3✴️ Slow burn Afterlife Magic portals Intensity of What love is
There is SO MUCH to uncover and yet I do need More! I want more
We meet Noralie (Main Character) who is from Hatcher's Point, she dances and looks good to those in her pub job but she really wants to get chosen to go the Queen Varya's castle so she leave her poverty no future life behind, unhappy but enjoying her life as much as possible given the circumstances. She ends up having a relationship with Finley the region fiddle player when he Is in town.
Queen Varya she is greedy, lives in clean conditions, ask for to much taxes.
Noralie goes for the lottery on her birthday which is when the Rekoltae happens and it overlap this year which happens to be her birthday, she didn't get accepted but she was notices.
Zion meets her at at her favorite place in the lake, which he took her to her death. He is a Soul Hunter
She winds up in the Shadow Realm and she meet Charales and Wulfe 😊 Blue eyes a hunk, and he is a Soul Hunter as well but he trying to become an Elder which is High Class Respect to get that. He and Noralie have a special bond immediately and it's EVERYTHING. They are OMG SO GOOD!!!! UHHHHH They can talk through their minds, he has her move into his cottage house away from the town in a forest, and the magic abilities he expands the cottage to her liking, They are absolutely Adorable. Their intimate bond is developed so fast, you have no time to talk a break and breathe. The SLOW BURN is INTENSE. Wulfe does in fact hide a lot from her when I do feel like she is brand New in this realm and figuring herself out, as well as being reminded on how she died (drowning ).
Wulfe to go from Realm's and he isn't supposed to know how, but he sorta trains her in becoming the New Ward that happens to literally fall in his lap. NO HATE , The LOVEL, ITS LOVE, you get me 😏😊 Wulfe becomes and Elder and Leaves and so Noralie is left alone 6 months, 2 weeks and 4 days to which finally she got her wasn't coming back. Seriously WTF
Noralie has 2 new friends who also are part of the Shadow Realm ANNISTYN TIMMONS CHARLES- Father figure, but man the banter between them, and can feel the genuine connection.
She is summoned by the Elders .MAZIE ROLLIN JUDITH GALINA MIKHAIL - Annistyn has a crush on an Elder, not allowed
When Gargoloin from the other side Can only manifest in the Shadow Realms. In the living world they are simply whispers of shadows. Dark Angels."
GARGOLLIONS- Awakened, reborn, created, summoned looking for something/ someone. Bad MF
Children of the Dark Darklings that death sent to collect souls who didn't deserve to go into the light forever.
The elders wipes her friends memories and her own as well from the events aspiring . She remembers everything, still and has to keep that a secret, Charles knows and Wulfe knows.
"You cannot be wounded in the Shadow Realms. Only when you visit the human words and take a physical form can you risk injury."
She elders gives her a New task because she isn't succeeding the Soul Hunting.
She (Noralie) then meets Blaine Kyrnan Royal Guard with brown hair brown eyes, sun kisses skin hinted a Northern accent a Hunk, do I say so myself.
She is told Blaine is her new Ward, who needs guidance, mentoring, and companionship. She also be getting a New advisory She has also been given her Leather bound notebook of Souls to take, which isn't achieved, so the Elders give her a different job which is Blaine and Sani her new advisor.
Blaine moves into Wulfe's cottage that Noralie also shared with Wulfe when they were a thing. THEY WAS TAKEN AWAY SO FAST, UHHHHHH She matured so quickly and kept thinking back to Yeah I remember me doing that same thing, she is calm about it, no hiding nothing from Blaine, giving him the space he needs to adjust, cuz "That's is the way it is done here in the Shadow Realm." Also "Welcome to the world of Bland tunics and no individualism."
She is experiencing the same feeling she has for Wulfe but with Blaine who has healing powers, and Noralie herself had Shamon blood. Wulfe is always coming to her rescue. But he chose Blaine for Noralie, and believes Blaine is up to something, and can't be trusted. The time is off I will say, Suspicious
Blaine is more trust worthy than Wulfe. Blaine is easy going, interested in her past life and how she sees things, talking to each other is nothing. They have their own special bond and its concerning to Wulfe, and Noralie is so tongue tied to Wulfe it's Agonizing.
The fighting, the betrayal, the Heart gut wrenching heart ache, the lies, or half truths. The death and injuries.

I want to start off by thanking the author for allowing me to advance read Of Death and Souls! Of Death and Souls was an engaging and twisting read. I rated ODAS a solid 4 stars!
The book starts out a bit slow as it starts out with a lot of world building and getting to know the main character, Noralie. I would say it took up until about 30% into the book for me to get very enthralled and engaged in the action and the storyline. However, once I was enthralled, I was ENTHRALLED! I did not want to put this book down and I wish I would have had more time to read because I would have finished it so much sooner!
The plot is very action-packed. There is always something going on in the story whether it is full on action or just character building through experiences and interactions. Nothing on the page is unimportant; every interaction and experience holds value. If you are looking for a story based in the afterlife with a battle between light and dark mixed with aspects of romance... Of Death and Souls is for you!
Focusing on the characters, I loved nearly every person in this book. I especially loved our female main character, Noralie. Throughout the story, Noralie experiences and learns so much. From whom she was at the beginning of the story to who she is at the end is like day and night. There is so much character development that we get to see from her. I also love our male main character, Wulfe. Wulfe is the type of character who we also get to see go through some drastic character development. He is one of those characters that you really cannot help loving from the very start. I must mention Charles. Charles is like my book grandpa. He's so witty that I couldn't help but smile every time his presence was on the page.
As for the slow burn romance in this book, I wasn't fully satisfied. It may be that I'm just not a fan of "true" slow burn romance, but I felt like we did not get nearly enough time with the main characters. I felt as though the majority of the book was Noralie pining over Wulfe with Wulfe sometimes gracing Noralie with his presence. I felt their romance was more of Noralie dwelling on memories of Wulfe than him being present in the romance. I was also thrown off by the semi-love triangle we were presented with and the major bombshell we were left with towards the end of the book. However, that is not to say that I did not enjoy Noralie and Wulfe's story, because I did! I love them together and I cannot wait to see how the story progresses. I'm hopeful that they will have more time together and ultimately end up together!
I genuinely enjoyed this extremely engaging book, and I cannot wait for the announcement and release of book 2!!
I went into *Of Death and Souls* not really knowing what to expect, and once I started, I did not want to put it down.
I loved the whole concept of this book. The afterlife, Death Wardens, Soul Hunters, the different realms—it was such a different take on what happens after death. I also really liked that we got to know Noralie before everything changed. She is stubborn, curious, and questions EVERYTHING, which honestly made her the perfect character for this story because I was questioning everything right along with her.
I loved the dynamic between Noralie and Wulfe too. Their relationship wasn’t something I could immediately figure out, and that ended up being one of my favorite parts. There were so many little moments between them where I kept thinking, “Okay, THIS is where this is going…” only for the story to turn around and make me question it again.
And then you add Blaine into everything and I’m like… wait. WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE?! 😂
That was probably my favorite thing about this book. Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen, something completely different happened. I would convince myself I had figured someone out, knew who I trusted, or knew where the story was headed and then… nope.
The further Noralie gets into the Shadow Realms, the more you realize that maybe everything she has been told isn’t exactly what it seems. Who is actually good? Who can she trust? What is really happening? I had so many theories while reading and I’m pretty sure most of them were wrong. 😂
I also really enjoyed the friendships and side characters. They made the world feel bigger than just the romance, and there were characters I became way more attached to than I expected.
But THAT ENDING.
Excuse me???
The last part of this book had me completely hooked, and then it just ENDS?! I actually sat there like, “There has to be another page.”
The unexpected definitely happened. I have approximately a million questions, I need to know what happens next, and I will be patiently (absolutely not patiently) waiting for book two.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
5/5 — because if a book makes me mad that it ended, it did its job.
I received this book as an ARC for an honest review.
This book is absolutely as intriguing on the inside as it is on the cover. The book completely surprised me. Partly, because I went in blind, but also because the story seemed so unique. I thought it was going to go a completely different direction and then Chapter 5 happened… and I realized I should have read the synopsis. Because what a turn!
“I only believed that you were born, you lived, and then Death came for you in a ball of shadows or in a burst of light.”
This book is about the afterlife. One thing this book did well was build the character up before throwing us into the afterlife. We got to get a sense of who Noralie was before becoming a Death Warden. She’s stubborn, questions everything, talks a lot. Just the way I like my FMCs.
Enter, Wulfe, her advisor upon entering the realm. They had an instant connection even before being bonded and forced to live together during training. Except, this relationship doesn’t isn’t going to go where you think it does… not giving more information there.
“It was a strange sensation—one that I couldn’t explain other than to say I felt the tether between us pull a little tighter.”
But wait, who is Blaine? From before the afterlife. Now in the afterlife. Noralie is charged to be his advisor.
“There was something about Blaine that had eased my soul in a way I didn’t believe possible anymore. Even though I’d only known him for two weeks…”
What is happening here A.L. Garr??? And that twist at the end? You have your hooks in me and I’ll take book 2 now please! 😮💨
“You are light in the darkness,” he said with a heavy Larasian accent.”
Okay, I really enjoyed this one! The whole idea of an afterlife being turned into this huge fantasy world with Death Wardens, Soul Hunters, different realms, magic, secrets, and all kinds of questionable people immediately caught my attention. I honestly had no idea who I could trust half the time, and I loved that. Noralie was such a fun FMC. She’s stubborn, curious, caring, and has a habit of getting herself into situations she probably should stay out of. I really liked watching her figure out this completely new world and slowly realized that maybe things aren’t exactly what she was told they were. And Wulfe... Yeah. I’m a sucker for the broody, mysterious, emotionally unavailable man with a million secrets. Apparently, that is just something I will never learn to resist. The romance is a SLOW burn, though. Like... Slow. There were times when I was sitting there thinking, “Can we please just get these two together already?” But I did like the tension between them, and I’m invested in seeing where their relationship goes. I also really liked the side characters. Some of them honestly stole the show for me, and I loved the friendships and relationships Noralie built along the way. The world building was probably my favorite part. I kept thinking I had figured it out and then something else would happen and I’d be like... wait, never mind. I especially loved the whole good vs. evil aspect because it wasn’t as simple as I expected it to be. The beginning was a little slow for me because there was a LOT of world building, but once I got into it, I was hooked. And that ending?! Absolutely not. I have questions. SO MANY QUESTIONS.
Thank you so much A.L. Garr for the arc of this book! I am so grateful for the opportunity to read it early!
This book was an absolute roller-coaster of emotions for me. I was easily invested in the story and Noralie from page one. I really felt for her through many events, and I was on the verge of tears during her trials. There is so much to navigate throughout the story, everyone is hiding things and no one is speaking the full truth. I'm still not sure who to trust and what to believe. The world building is easy to understand and creates a very vivid picture of the new places we find ourselves in. The second half of the book had me completely on edge with all of the new information and pieces finally starting to click into place.
I really liked Noralie's character. She didn't have an easy life but she still found hope in places many wouldn't. I love her inquisitive nature and how she doesn't let others push her around. The story is from her perspective, so we get to learn everything as she is experiencing it. Her emotions hit me hard, and I felt her pain and wonder. Her connection with Wulfe has me very intrigued, his character is still quite a mystery to me. But their tension and slow burn is so intense. The found family was a lovely part of this story. I adore Charles, Timmons, and Annistyn and the impact they had on Noralie. I can't wait to see more of all of these characters.
This was a quick read for me, staying up all night because I didn't want to put it down. The mystery pulls you along, always offering more questions and few answers. That ending definitely left me screaming for me, I absolutely cannot wait for book two!
This book had me wanting to immediately sign up for the afterlife, even though I previously thought I liked my life.
The morally gray mmc had me head over heels from his first appearance on the page, and even when he infuriated me and broke my heart, the love for him never ceased.
I love all the mysteries this book sets up to be unraveled and the magical gargoyles like creatures had me sitting up straighter and paying extra attention as I read because I immediately needed more of those!
I’ll confess this is one of my favorite authors but she set the bar even higher with this super unique portrayal of the afterlife and the mystery shrouding what side you should really be on. The main character is facing a lot and your opinions will vastly change throughout the story several times as hers do. Because every time you think you know for sure who the good and bad guys are, you don’t. You just don’t.
The mentor and mentee relationships will have you questioning morals and how the leadership in this world is set up, and your eyes will be glued to the pages for each new evolution of the relationship.
Is choosing darkness over love ever the right answer? This book will have you wondering if it could be, and you won’t be sorry for diving into this world and swimming through all the shades of gray between good and evil. You’ll only be sorry you didn’t toe the line of morally gray sooner!
If you are a fan of high-stakes romantic fantasy packed with sharp banter, intricate underworld magic, and a heroine who refuses to fold under pressure, you need to add Of Death and Souls by A.L. Garr to your TBR immediately. The story follows Noralie Locke, a street-smart survivor whose tragic end on the city streets becomes only the beginning of her journey. Plunged into a lethal realm beyond death, she finds herself navigating ancient soul-bound magic, deadly realm politics, and an irresistible, morally grey shadow ruler who pushes her to her absolute limits.
Noralie is a standout protagonist who brings her razor-sharp street instincts and biting wit directly into the afterlife, making her growth and survival feel thoroughly earned. A.L. Garr crafts a hauntingly atmospheric dark fantasy world that seamlessly shifts from gritty street survival into rich, ominous soul lore. The chemistry between the leads is an absolute highlight—filled with slow-burn tension, sharp banter, and intense angst that builds toward a deeply satisfying "us against the world" dynamic. With a fast-paced plot and a third-act twist that leaves you reeling, this is a must-read for fans of The Crimson Moth, The Kindred Curse Saga, and Crescent City.
I received an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of this book and am leaving this honest review voluntarily. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
I was drawn to the book because of the afterlife theme… and stayed for the characters, world building and never being able to guess what would happen.
Also. The cover is GORGEOUS!
We get a brief glimpse of Noralie’s life as a human before she dies and becomes a Death Warden. She slowly builds a found family in the afterlife - of which Charles is my favorite. (He gives Gandalf vibes, just no staff/hat, and maybe more spritely.) Okay, and maybe Sani, too. (He gives Caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland vibes. IYKYK.) The Shadow Realms also home to Soul Hunters… think vampires, but with a twist.
There is a slow burn for the romance. And the mysteries. What are the Fates doing?!?!
THE ENDING. Oh. My. I in no way expected that and that is one of my favorite things about reading; stories can constantly surprise you! Book 2 promises to be EPIC.
Please add this great book to your TBR! You won’t be disappointed, even if you may want to chuck it against the wall at times, which is always my sign of a very fun book! Looking forward to book 2!
If you love: 💫 Afterlife Setting ⚡️SLOW BURN 💫 Magic + Mystery ⚡️ Good vs Evil… and the very grey in between! 💫 Found Family ⚡️ Emotional Damage/Whiplash
Received as an ARC | New Release | Indie Author This book was an absolute five-star read for me! The storyline is so unique and intriguing, and I love how the author has created a world that feels fresh and different. We have two groups dighting for the souls of the recently departed: the Wardens, who are essentially angels of death, and the Hunters, who remind me of vampires that feed on souls. A mix of enemies-to-lovers and star-crossed lovers, and there's a little love triangle drama thrown into the mix! ❤️🔥 WHAT is the mystery behind the Gargoylians?! 👀 I have so many theories, and I have a feeling this is going to become something HUGE! Could it have something to do with Noralie's hidden destiny? I have my suspicions, but now I have to wait to find out! I will be waiting… not so patiently, but in the best possible way! 😂 If you enjoy unique fantasy worlds, supernatural conflict, a little slow-burn romance, and a mystery of things will go next, this one deserves a spot on your TBR!
This was such a fun read! Taking place mostly in the afterlife, I found myself fascinated with the world that A.L. Garr created with this one. Wulfe, our MMC, was morally grey, passionate, and devoted to Noralie, our FMC and his ward in the afterlife, yet struggled with an intense internal conflict from his past. Noralie was sharp-tongued, strong-willed, and a fighter, with a craving for adventure. Together they made for the perfect storm, though the fates were not always kind to the duo. There was a bit of a love triangle in this one, which isn’t always my jam, but I didn’t mind it much with this one. The plot twists had me shook with the revelations they uncovered and had me questioning everything. I can’t wait to see where the story goes from here in book two!
This book put me through so many emotions, ranging from happy to sad to really fucking angry. There were a lot of questions throughout the story, but not always a lot of answers. The romance especially made me feel everything, including the anger. 😂 I could picture some of the scenes really well while reading, and I enjoyed the fantasy elements and the overall story. I definitely recommend giving this book a try, especially if you're a fantasy girlie or guy. The ending, however, didn't give me quite as much as I was hoping for. I don't necessarily feel like I need a second book, but if there is a book two coming, I'll absolutely read it because I still want answers to some of those questions. 👀 Overall, this book took me on an emotional roller coaster, and I enjoyed the ride even when I wanted to scream at the characters. 😂
I received an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
I was drawn to this book as it was set in the afterlife & I found the concept intriguing. I enjoyed the world building & the different characters. Noralie was tough, she had to be to survive being on her own. I did feel sorry for her, how events unfolded, her death & how she found herself in strange surroundings. As the story progresses she finds new friendships & I felt they developed quite naturally. I liked how this was split in 2 parts & how Noralie's character changed after what happened, which I felt was understandable. There's definitely more going on than you find out in this book & questions that still need answered. I really did not expect that ending & I'm really looking forward to reading book 2 to find out what is really going on.
I was lucky enough to recieve this book as an ARC. And boy was I not disappointed!
I really loved the world building, it was intricate without being overly complicated. We are learning how this world works right alongside our FMC, Noralie.
I'm a sucker for an emotionally unavailable, morally gray MMC. My only issue was I wanted more of that enemies to lovers vibe. Dare I say it wasn’t slow enough in the beginning?
Overall I loved the story and how the author took the concept of the afterlife and turned it into a fantasy world that was easy to understand. I loved the characters and their development.
I can see how this book wouldn't be for everyone, but I personally am so excited and looking forward to the next installment! Mostly because that ending had me questioning everything and I need answers!!!!! And this book is going to be a permanent resident on my bookshelf.
Received an ARC for my honest review. I loved this book! I barely put it down when I had time. Here is why: The slow-burn dynamic is absolute perfection, built on deep emotional stakes and delicious anticipation rather than instant attraction. I do not like too much juicy stuff and this is much more emotional. A.L. Garr crafts a rich, atmospheric realm where the boundaries between life, death, and magic blur into something truly unforgettable. This author continually ups her game with these fantasy worlds. The writing is lyrical and sharp, drawing you deep into the characters' internal struggles and triumphs. If you love high-stakes emotional journeys and intricate fantasy worlds, this is an absolute must-read.
I really loved this book. It grabbed my attention pretty early on, and once I got into it, I had a hard time putting it down. There was just something about the story that kept me wanting to know what would happen next.
I really liked the characters too. They felt easy to get invested in, and I found myself actually caring about what happened to them. I also enjoyed the darker, supernatural side of the story. It added a lot without feeling like it was just there for the sake of it.
Honestly, this was just one of those books that worked for me. I enjoyed the story, the characters, and the overall feel of it, and I was sad when I got to the end because I wasn’t ready to leave it yet. Definitely an easy 5 stars from me, and I’d happily recommend it.
This was a gripping slow burn romance and the first part of a duet. I went in thinking things would be fairly straightforward, as a journey to the after life, but nothing really was. Love this! Noralie went through a lot, before and after her death, and her pining for her mentor, Wulfe, was intense. I have to restate that this is a true slow burn romance so be prepared if you were figuring to dive into spice when you hit chapter three ;P Expect to get caught up in the complex characters, clear world building, character growth, action, drama, banter, chemistry and unique plot when you crack this baby open. It's a page turner and I have so many questions that I'm quite anxious for book two to come out. Good fun!
“When it comes to death and love, only one is guaranteed.”
Noralie Locke dies and wakes up in the Shadow Realms, only to discover that death is far from the end of her story. Now she's a Death Warden, guiding souls while dealing with dangerous magic, Soul Hunters, and secrets waiting to be uncovered.
I love the idea of an afterlife filled with magic and danger, especially when there's still so much to figure out. Add in mystery, complicated feelings, and romance, and you have a fantasy that checks a lot of my boxes!
And let's be honest, I need the fantasy AND the romance. Give me secrets, emotional moments, and characters who keep me guessing!
I'm definitely curious to see where Noralie's journey takes her and what other secrets the Shadow Realms are hiding.
Thank you A. L. Garr for the ARC copy for Of Death and Souls!
A. L. Garr brings us into a fantasy romance and does an incredible job at creating this world. It’s a new take on second chances, the afterlife, and what’s considered good or evil.
I loved our FMC, Noralie Locke! She’s curious and stubborn and doesn’t take things just because that’s what she’s told. I’m a sucker for a slow burn and I think the author definitely delivered that for us as we see Noralie and Wulfe!
I knew with the posts that this is meant to be a series, but I got so enveloped in the story that I didn’t remember…so I wasn’t prepared for the ending!
Read Of Death and Souls if you enjoy fantasy, romance, supernatural worlds, and strong FMCs! …and if you like to question EVERYTHING like Noralie and me!
Thank you A.L. Garr for an eARC of Of Death and Souls!
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
This was a very unique take on the afterlife that was enjoyable to read! There were some twists and turns in the last 20% which I wasn’t expecting but was a pleasant surprise!
I personally prefer more of a slow burn and this was definitely a fast burn in my opinion, even though it was marketed as a slow burn. I also didn’t love how the FMC just seemed to blindly accept she was dead and wasn’t freaking out at all???
I loved the mentor/mentee vibe between Wulfe and Noralie. These two definitely need to work on their communication skills though haha.
This book starts with Noralie living a normal life in the lower part or the kingdom. Every year trying to get her number drawn for a better life. Then one day a horrible accident happens and she is thrown into a new life where she has to learn everything. She finally gets her warden and they have a connection like no other. Things happen and now she must figure things out on how to save people and a world shes now in. I loved the slow burn and the unexpected events that pop up. I definitely need book 2.
LOVED this book and all I have to say is I AM LIVID that I don’t have the next one in the series to start right away.
This book predominantly takes place in the afterlife and it has a very interesting approach. I felt like I was uncovering more and more to what is a very complex and several books worthy plot.
I love the characters and I am really interested to learn what happens with them all. I sense she has strategically left out some big answers and I can’t wait to uncover them all!
