Mom Dioum, l'héroïne, vit dans un pays ubuesque inénarrable, où le Timonier a décidé qu'il fallait tuer tous les fous qui raisonnent et ceux qui ne raisonnent pas. La Folie et la Mort raconte l'histoire d'une jeune fille partie subir un tatouage - cette épreuve d'endurance physique et morale - par expiation ou comme le dit l'héroïne "se tuer pour renaître". Epreuve d'ailleurs inachevée. C'est alors que commence pour elle la véritable initiation à travers une longue errance, tantôt onirique, tantôt fantastique et le plus souvent réelle qui la conduira aux portes de la folie et de la mort. Tous les héros - dont les histoires s'entrecroisent - sont tragiques, névrotiques. La Folie et la Mort est une allégorie : c'est l'agonie, plus précisément le destin d'un Continent en proie aux démons de la guerre civile, de la pauvreté, de l'endettement, avec son cortège de malheurs et d'abominations sur fond d'excommunications, de dictatures, de gesticulations idéologiques meurtrières et de grande misère, d'errance, de crise existentielle : l'Afrique. La Folie et la Mort est un récit âpre, véhément, sur fond de violence d'amour, de haine.

Après sa trilogie autobiographique - Le Baobab Fou, Cendres et Braises, Riwan ou le Chemin de sable - Ken Bugul confirme à nouveau son talent dans l'art narratif avec La Folie et la Mort, un récit captivant et bouleversant où elle a su créer un univers romanesque plus que vraisemblable. Un univers fantastique, merveilleux qui a su intégrer harmonieusement l'imaginaire africain avec ses contes, légendes et allégories.

Ken Bugul (born 1947 in Ndoucoumane) is the pen name of a Senegalese Francophone novelist, whose real name is Mariètou Mbaye Biléoma. The name derives from the Wolof language, in which it means "one who is unwanted."

Bugul was raised in a polygamous environment. Her father was an 85-year-old marabout. After completing her elementary education in her native village, she studied at the Malick Sy Secondary School in Thiès. After a year in Dakar, she obtained a scholarship which allowed her to continue study in Belgium. In 1980 she returned to her home, where she became the 28th wife in the harem of the village marabout. After his death, she returned to the big city. From 1986 to 1993, she worked for the NGO IPPF (International Planned Parenthood Foundation) in Nairobi, Kenya; Brazzaville, Congo; and Lomé, Togo. She subsequently married a doctor from Benin and gave birth to a daughter. Today she lives and works as a dealer of arts and crafts in Porto-Novo, Benin.

Bugul's literary reputation has varied from place to place. She was awarded the Grand prix littéraire d'Afrique noire for her novel Riwan ou le Chemin de Sable in 2000, but is better known among American readers for her novel The Abandoned Baobab, which is her only book to date to have been translated into English. This autobiographical work deals with and critiques African colonialism. As of late, her status among American feminists has diminished somewhat, as many have critiqued her for marrying a holy man who already had over 20 wives. This is perhaps undeserved, and is a good example of ideologies clashing, as the criticism is the result of American feminists attempting to hold Bugul up to the standards of American feminism, which is worlds away from her Senegalese experience.

Dit laat een diepe indruk na. Inhoudelijk is dit boek zeer sterk... de botsing tussen traditie en de verdorvenheid van de stedelijke omgeving... de schaamteloze corruptie van de machthebbers en specifiek de politie... de schandelijke erfenis van het kolonialisme waarvan het misbruik en de uitbuiting tot op de dag van vandaag doorgaan tegen de achtergrond van een leugenachtige schijndemocratie... Mensenlevens spelen hier geen rol; een mens heeft geen waarde; enkel geld, aanzien en macht zijn van tel. En dat is niet enkel een zaak van de autochtone bevolking, ook de blanke aanwezigheid en invloed blijven in deze van belang.
Wat is de waarde van een mens? Zowel voor de traditie als voor de losgeslagen moderniteit? Wat betekent een individu? Wat is gek zijn? En wat is ontwikkeling of onderontwikkeling?
In dit magisch-realistische verhaal zijn realiteit en magie/mythe heel intens met elkaar verweven... en de mens... ja, de mens... wat is de mens? Is de mens als levend wezen wel van enigerlei waarde? Of is het allemaal niets anders dan een spel van schijn, waan, bedrog?
