The vivid imagination, robust humor, and profound sense of place of the Indians of Oregon are revealed in this anthology, which gathers together hitherto scattered and often inaccessible legends originally transcribed and translated by scholars such as Archie Phinney, Melville Jacobs, and Franz Boas.
right after finding this book we (my wife, her father, his wife, and i) watched a lightning storm break around the high peaks surrounding crater lake - that should be prerequisite to reading... more as it develops.
I had gotten this book years back during a book fair at Pasadena City College. In each of the tales, I was taken to inspiring cliffs, pounding waterfalls. crackly crispy tree branches. All of these moments in time for the Natives who told these stories. Some had a message while others were simply stories to tell around the fire. It does bring a connection to the past in these modern times. Often we see tidbits of ideas here and there that float about and when you trace them back far enough, one can see the origin of some our most favorite movies or tv shows.
I will most definitely be reading this again during a hike up the Sierras or the Cascades
