Nick Tremantle has had a rough ten months. His professional life took a nosedive, and then his mom's health took a turn for the worse. In a short space of time, everything changed. So when he spies the young man hitchhiking, Nick pulls over - he needs all the Karma he can lay his hands on. But when the identity of the young man is revealed, it sets in motion a chain of events that unfold quickly, changing Nick's life completely.
Alex Nordmann's life has definitely not gone the way he'd planned. Gone are his dreams of an education and living his life 'his' way. He'd thought the worst was over, until the morning he decided to come out to his parents. It just goes to show, people will surprise you every time. For instance, who could have foreseen that the man who gives him a ride - and an unexpected lifeline - would have been Alex's first crush all those years ago?

This story is short and sweet with a bit of smexy stirred in.
Nick used to be Alex's high school teacher. Alex awakened the part of Nick that yearned for another man's touch, but Nick wasn't ready to admit to himself, much less the world, that he was gay, and he was certainly not going to cross that line and hit on a student.
Seven years later, Nick, still very much in the back of the closet with the scarves and umbrellas, picks up Alex on the side of the road.
Alex, who's has had a rough few years and had to drop out of college following a cancer diagnosis, has just been unceremoniously dumped by his parents.
Nick offers Alex (who is in remission) a place to stay, and the two fall into a very domestic routine.
As FRIENDS. Even though each of them lusts after the other.
Mr. Nick Tremantle was, after all, the star of Alex's teenage fantasies.
I loved the age difference between the MCs and slow burn in this story.
Alex is broken and discouraged when Nick takes him in, but Nick, who has bad memories and anxiety of his own, gets as much comfort from Alex as Alex gets from him.
Alex teaches Nick to trust and to feel. The men talk and share. They cook together and laugh together.
Now if they could only *ahem* GET together.
And they do . . . eventually. The wait is very much worth it, because Alex and Nick's first time is at once hot and tender, spicy but believable.
This is a teacher/student story, but it's also a friends-to-lovers story.
It's set in Florida, so the boys are not British. I'm still pouting a little about that.
But, hell, who am I fooling, I still adored this novella and can't wait to see where K.C. goes with this series.
This was the perfect novella to end my January reading with. It had all the feels, the pining, the passion, and some truly beautiful hurt-comfort-healing vibes that swept me away on a wave of delicious emotions.
I’m not usually one for teacher/student romances—having spent over a decade teaching—but the way Wells set up this story, with seasoned and closeted teacher, Nick, finding his perfect match in his old student Alex, now 25 and world weary, proved to be the exact type of circumstances I could get behind where this sometimes troublesome trope is concerned.
I felt for Nick, closeted and aching for the strength to live a more authentic life, constantly facing setbacks with family and career that make him feel like his happiness and contentment is a state not quite achievable. But when he finds Alex wandering the side of the road with nowhere to go, he finds new purpose in providing a safe place for the younger man to regroup, offering an ear and sage advice that Nick’s students always appreciated him for.
Alex may have experienced his first real crush sitting in Nick’s classroom many years before, but a battle with cancer and further knockdowns from coming out to unaccepting parents, have left Alex, quite literally, lost and listless… until Nick serendipitously shows up offering a safe haven and a friendship they both desperately crave.
Although fairly short in overall length, I was impressed by how much depth was packed into this story and these characters. It was under 100 pages, yet the relationship that transitioned from old teacher and student, to friends and housemates, to eventual lovers, felt like a slow-burn in its lovely evolution.
I adored the pining and the fact these two had been secretly (but life-alteringly) affected by one another—even at a stage in their lives when nothing could or would come of it (when Alex was back in school). They were both good men and the kindest of souls, and together they fit so effortlessly that it felt like a big hard-earned win when they finally admitted to their feelings and became a couple, regardless of however inevitable they may have been from the start to the reader.
I’ll definitely be reading more in this series, if these are the kinds of characters and themes and romances that are to be expected. ❤️
What a lovely little gem this was, cute doesn't do it justice AT ALL!! 5 stars from me.
How do I describe this?? Sort of a do-over meets May to say September, hehe. Who was Alex's favourite teacher at school, you know when Alex was old enough to start having 'those' sort of feelings about his teacher?? Yep, you've got it, a certain Nick Tremantle, and HIS favourite student just happened to be....fill in the blanks. Now here they are, 7 years down the line and a helluva lot has happened to both of them in the meantime, and most of it not good.
Do they deserve a chance at love and some good fortune to come their way at last?? You bet your sweet ass they do!! Highly recommended, and not just cos KC gave me an ARC (Big smooch by the way).
K.C.Wells writes good stories. They are comfort reads for me and this one did not dissapoint. Despite its short length the story and the characters are developed pretty well.In a few words:
Teacher with former student, check. Slow burn and virgin sex , check. Age gap, check. Angst (mild, not enough to rip your heart out) and healing, check.
So yes, it ticked many of my boxes, I can't wait for the next one. Recommended:)
Enjoyable first part and great beginning of a new series by K.C. Wells.
I like well elaborated stories with lovable characters and this novella was truly a little gem. Loved Nick and Alex to bits. They both needed to get their life back on track and deserved all the happiness in the world.
Read this in one sitting with a silly smile on my face. Can’t wait for the next installment. Recommended. :)

So when he spies the young man hitchhiking, Nick pulls over - he needs all the Karma he can lay his hands on. For instance, who could have foreseen that the man who gives him a ride, and an unexpected lifeline, would have been Alex's first crush all those years ago? Alex has no idea what's coming at him. K.C. Well has a "thing" for opposites attract. Her stories seem to always have characters that shouldn't be somehow always "mesh".
Nick Tremantle is 39 years old and basically a virgin. He had always had a deep suspicion that he was gay. I thought "good grief man...what was your first clue"? Then we have Alex Nordmann who is 26 years old and was Nick's former student, who has suddenly appeared back in the life of the one man whose impact on him as a 17-year-old brought him to the knowledge that he certainly was gay...not one single doubt about it!
Our Nick of course was clueless; he had no idea of Alex's infatuation and Alex had no idea of how Nick's life had been turned upside down since he learned the "thing" that changed his life. Can anyone guess how disastrous this could turn out? It turns out that life just wasn't fair to either of them. Alex had fought cancer and won, and Nick was just so alone and unhappy. If ever two people needed some joy in their lives, it was Nick and Alex. Both are going to have to wait until the story catches up to the present...which was a tad "jarring".
In the present: Nick is out driving one morning and stops to pick up a hitch hiker. He is surprised to see that it is Alex, his former student...the very same one who Nick had a crush on when Alex was in his class. Alex is surprised to see his former teacher, but he accepts the ride. He had just come out to his parents, and surprise... they had no use for a gay son in their lives or in their home. Alex had nowhere to go, so he thought he would just start out and look for a job. Nick, being Nick offers him a safe place to stay while putting his life back together. Over the next few months, they share a lot about themselves, and they begin to fall in love. Nick finally tells Alex that he was attracted to him all those years ago.
This was a good, well written story, but parts were a bit hard to believe...but ...IT WAS JUST A STORY, and like in any story anything can and does often happen that you might question if you read long enough:) Seeing the relationship build and the two guys learning to accept who they were along with admitting how they felt about one another made the story worth at least 4.5 stars. I really like this author, and I own many of her books, plus I had already read another book in this series; they can easily be read out of order... so I'm certainly going to continue with this series. A Side Note: Another thing that I really loved about this book was that I recognized so many of the places mentioned in the story, as it was set in Florida, and I am a transplanted Floridian!
One constant about K.C. Wells' writing is that she never fails to make me fall for her characters. While this story is short, both Nick and Alex grabbed me from the start.
This is a nice, slow growing relationship. Nick is at a low point in his life. He is in his thirties and still denying his sexuality, doing everything he can to eliminate temptation. When he comes upon his former student Alex hitchhiking, there is no question that he will do what he can to help him out, including giving him a place to stay. Alex has had a difficult few years and just when he thought things might be getting better, he is dealt a blow he never expected. As the two men get reacquainted after seven years, they discover they have a lot more in common the former student-teacher relationship.
The story moves along well and we learn a lot about both men and the painful things that brought them to where they are now in their lives. As they build a friendship, both are dancing around and hiding their other long repressed feelings. When someone finally makes a move, the chemistry is sizzling. K.C. Wells definitely knows how to write a love scene that will heat you up and make you smile!
I'll admit I'm usually not a big fan of novellas as I find they often have to jump in and rush things, but Teach Me did neither. The story is fully realized, with humor to balance the difficult times and plenty of tenderness. By the time it was over, I fully knew Nick and Alex and was completely invested in their story and their happiness. A perfect afternoon read.
Such a beautiful bite-sized story. Perfect for a lunch time read.
Both Nick and Alex captured me, right away. Both reeling from life events and both in need of love and comfort and acceptance. My only wish was that it was longer.
Proof that the voice can either make it or break it...
'Teach Me' is the first book in K. C. Wells 'Lightening Tales' and at 2 hours & 26 minutes on audio and 73 pages for the e-book it's a fairly quick listen/read no matter how you do it.
I hesitated on this one because I'm really, really not a fan of romance stories where there's a power imbalance before things even start and in this case it's a teacher/student dynamic but there were a couple of things that saved this one for me. The first one being that there was nothing between this couple during the time that they were in fact teacher and student and the age gap was definitely within my 10 - 15 year comfort zone. Nick may have been Alex's first crush but as a young man and a student he was never bold enough to act on his feeling.
I loved that the relationship between these two started off slow. Nick comes across Alex as he's leaving town after coming out to his parents, who were less than accepting of his news leaving Alex with the realization that if he's ever going to truly be himself it wouldn't happen living in his parents house. Nick offers Alex a place to stay where he'll be safe and able to get his feet under him.
For Nick it's a chance to have someone around...someone who becomes not only company that he enjoys but a friend. It's during this time that both men begin to realize that their feelings go beyond the boundaries of friendship. I loved how supportive and helpful Nick tried to be but never felt that he was trying to be controlling and Alex while appreciative of Nick's help was never made to feel obligated and we got to see him as Nick's equal in the friendship and comfort that he brought to Nick as he worked through emotional issues from his past.
'Teach Me' was a solid 4 star story for me...unfortunately what fell short was the audio portion. Rob Drex was the narrator on this one and he's a new to me narrator and unfortunately one that just didn't work for me. For the most part the voices just didn't feel right to me and sometimes characters went from sounding like an overly excited 12 year old to an over the top drama queen all in the course of a few sentences. But I have to admit what really did me in was the sex scenes it's been a while since I listened to an audio book where the sex scenes which I'm fairly certain should have been 'hot 'n steamy' had my inner 12 year old coming out for a good giggle fest.
Narrators are such a personal issue in my viewpoint and I know from checking out reviews on audible.com that some listeners really enjoyed this one. So while this audio book didn't work for me on the audio level. The story was really good and I very much enjoyed it, 4 stars for the story and 2 for the audio and we'll call it day with an overall rating of 3.
Teach Me is not super long, and it's quick and easy reading that's a light bite. It's nice. It's sweet. It's cute - that's the best way I can describe the overall story and writing. There's no big dramas or angst to be found anywhere. No antagonist lurking. It's all about the relationship development of the MCs. I'm not the usual nice, sweet, cute reader, but when I feel in the mood for it, this is pretty much the kind of book I'm looking to kick back with. I'll certainly be reading more in this series now I've discovered the author. Good reading for lovers of gay romance.
My Rating: 4 of 4 Stars (Short&Light Read Category)
There is something about erotic older lover stories that just tickles me pink. Especially when the younger guy is not so young but is an adult and not a twink. Yes, I know! I can be a little picky, but then again, Nick and Alex are two men who WILL tickle you pink as well.
It all started, well, several years ago. Nick taught high school and he had a student he got attracted to but did nothing. He is a stellar man! What he did not know was the young man then, just awakening to his own sexuality, was crushing on him as well. Again, Alex did nothing. He is a stellar young man!
Years later, life as Nick knew it is no longer and he comes back to his home town to teach. He is lonely, he is sad and miserable. On a day when he thought his life was just stagnating, he drives off to spot a young man walking, hiking, for somewhere. The man was Alex whom he recognized. When he hears the story Alex had to tell, he knew he had no choice but to help and offer him a home. No strings attached. Just a solid extension of help for someone in need.
Alex never thought to see his old teacher again but when the man extends his help, he really had no choice. It was either he goes off to somewhere knowing not where he was going or go off somewhere knowing he will most likely be lost in life. He takes the help.
When the two men get to know each other, they each reveal secrets they long kept from themselves and from others. The telling of this story is how these two men, one older, one younger, come to know who and what they are. Eventually, they learn what they mean to each other.
Isn't this story just grand! Yes, I finished this so fast I practically sped through the read in an hour. This is fast paced without missing a detail and the romance that grew between the men did start slow, then simmered before it boiled over.
Some men have been through so much pain and need a break so badly that I just want to hand a better life to them on a silver platter. In the case of ‘Teach Me’, K.C. Wells does so for me, and I couldn’t have been happier about the way she goes about it. Both Nick and Alex need a break, and the fact that they each lusted for the other (in secret, of course) in the past, gave me reason to hope. With characters who pulled me into the story from the first page, and a slow and careful development toward more as they feel their way, this story touched my heart and made me smile.
Nick is an English teacher, and he is one of those who care. He’d had a few very difficult months between a bad situation at work and his mother’s death, followed by some issues of hers he’d never seen coming. Almost worse than that, he has been lying to himself about who he is and what he truly needs. When Alex reappears in his life, not as a student this time, he is just the nudge Nick needs to rethink his priorities, and to consider finally coming out of the closet.
Alex has had an awful time of it. He may have cheated death, but he is no longer in college, and when he comes out to his parents, their reaction is so bad he leaves the same day – even though he has nowhere to go. When Nick is the one to find him trying to hitchhike his way out of town, Alex is surprised. At least he knows he can trust his former teacher, but there are a few surprises in store for him as they slowly get to know each other again.
If you like sweet hurt-comfort stories, if you want to find out how two men who are both hurt and alone manage to chase away the darkness in their lives by banding together, and if you’re looking for a read that will tug at your heartstrings and make you smile, then you will probably like this novella.
NOTE: This book was provided by the author for the purpose of a review on Rainbow Book Reviews.
This is one of my favorite K.C. Wells stories. Two men meet again after a few years and discover that they both have so much pain in the time they were apart. As they talk they discover that they can help each other heal. Nick was Alex's teacher several years ago. Alex made quite an impression on Nick; he was a good student and had great potential. Nick always assumed Alex went on to college and began a good life. Alex never forgot Nick, either. During the intervening years if something could go wrong for each man it did, to the point that one of them faced his own death and the other a long slide to death of a loved one. Their stories of what has happened to derail their plans for the future are heartbreaking and yet are so realistic as the events could happen to any of us, in any combination. I read this sweet novella in one sitting. I simply could not put it down. There were tears (mine) for the remembrances of the hard times they suffered and smiles for the strength that each has taken from those experiences and now are using to help each other. Highly recommended as a feel-good story and one I have already read twice and will read again.
This was an absolute dream to read.....Basing more on Nick and Alex getting to know each other more than jumping straight into bed it was a perfect read.....Nick finally admitting out loud to Alex who he used to teach......This is seven years after Alex left school so no crossing lines...Nick and Alex were totally amazing together and the book just kept you reading right upto the last page.....This is going to be a great series and i'm looking forward to reading more x
A Quiet Story Teach Me by KC Wells is a quiet story. A lonely man reconnects with a younger man from the past that he was secretly crushing on. For me this is one of those stories that has no bells or whistles, just two humans coming together and that's not a bad thing. Thankfully, Wells does not depend on sex as a filler so we get real storytelling. Yes, I do wish it was longer but whatever.
I enjoyed both the ebook as well as the audio version.
This short friends to lovers story is sweet and romantic, as well as hot. Nick is a lonely, closeted, and sexually inexperienced teacher, who quite by chance meets Alex, a former student, whose family has rejected him because he's gay. Nick offers him a place to stay while he sorts his life out.
I liked that the story is told in alternate POVs so we get a glimpse into both Alex and Nick’s thoughts and feelings. They are both loveable and believable characters, and from the start, the reader/listener wants them to get together and fall in love. Their rather sad backstories are interwoven through the dialogue in this slow-build romance. As the two men get to know and trust each other more, they make the age gap work for them, and when they finally make out, it’s hot as well as tender.
Rob Drex is a relatively new narrator on Audible and this is the first story of his I have listened to. His performance of the story was clear and steady. He made a distinction between the main character’s voices and he portrayed their emotions well.
This was one of those rare stories that I was able to read uninterrupted. Teach Me is a compact, but complete story. It was so easy to care about Nick and Alex as I followed their journey back to each other; two people whose lives had taken each of them through some dark times since they originally met. This is a short, but well crafted story that I very much enjoyed and would definitely recommend.
I loved this. I loved Alex and Nick. I loved how easy they were together. I loved the patience between both of them. I loved the routine they fell into. I loved how they supported each other, it wasn't one sided.
This is short and packs a punch and if it sets the standard for the rest of the series you are in for a treat.
Nick lives a sad and lonely life and exists on the fringes. Through fear, trepidation and a bad experience at the school he previously worked at there is no way in hell he is ever going to come out, admit who he is and find Mr Right. Still grieving for his mother and sorting out her affairs he would prefer to be lonely than suffer at the hands of the towns bigots.
Alex Nordmann dreamed of finishing his education and living life the way he wanted to. When he was in class seven years ago, crushing on his teacher, he couldn’t possibly imagined how his life would change. Believing nothing could affect the love his parents had for him he chooses honesty - but with devastating consequences that now find him looking for a job and a home.
Seven years on and fate drops both these men in each other’s paths. An act of generosity builds a friendship which allows both of these men to start to heal and trust. This is a slow burn romance and it really needed to happen that way. Nick may be older but he is far less experienced and he needed to fully accept the fact that Alex was an adult and not see the student he once taught. Alex found his acceptance in Nick who tenderly helped him through his feelings of rejection.
It may have been a long time coming….but it was definitely worth the wait
This was a cute, charming and endearing story and a great beginning to a new series. Nick is a teacher who is out driving one morning and stops to pick up a hitch hiker. It is Alex, a former student, who Nick had a crush on when Alex was in his class. Alex, surprised to see his old teacher, accepts the ride offered. He had just come out to his parents and they didn't want him anymore. Alex, not having anywhere to go, figured he would head out to find a job. Nick offers him a safe place to stay, to get his bearings. Over the next few months, they share a lot about their lives and they start to fall in love. Nick finally admits he is gay and that he was attracted to Alex all those years ago. It is sweet seeing their relationship build, and admitting their feelings. I look forward to the next book in the series!
*3.5 stars Nice story of two down-on-their-luck men who find each other again (seven years after they were student/teacher) and find love.
I've got a feeling this will be one of those books that works for others more than it does for me, probably because of my general dislike of the student/teacher trope. Don't get me wrong - there's nothing inappropriate here. Neither man realized there was a mutual attraction when they were student/teacher AND it has been seven years since that time. Yet, the fact that they were high school teacher and student still kinda bothers me for some reason -- likely just a me thing.
Cute short story, with likable characters! Unfortunately I couldn't connect with said characters, not even a little bit. Also, I'm not a fan of books where 99% of the interaction takes place between the MCs. Sure, the relationship between the MCs is very important, but so are the secondary characters! This book had 2 secondary characters that we got to "meet" for a total of 1.5 pages; definitely not enough for me.
The pace at which things work out in this book gave me whiplash BUT it was still worth the read. I liked the slow progression, more like a friends to lovers kind of vibe. I also liked the student becoming the teacher aspect. Ending made me smile too.

A very nice and quick read. It got a little sappy at the end but I could overlook that because the rest of it was so good. I'll be reading the next one.
