About the author

Stefan Zweig was one of the world's most famous writers during the 1920s and 1930s, especially in the U.S., South America, and Europe. He produced novels, plays, biographies, and journalist pieces. Among his most famous works are Beware of Pity, Letter from an Unknown Woman, and Mary, Queen of Scotland and the Isles. He and his second wife committed suicide in 1942.
Zweig studied in Austria, France, and Germany before settling in Salzburg in 1913. In 1934, driven into exile by the Nazis, he emigrated to England and then, in 1940, to Brazil by way of New York. Finding only growing loneliness and disillusionment in their new surroundings, he and his second wife committed suicide.
Zweig's interest in psychology and the teachings of Sigmund Freud led to his most characteristic work, the subtle portrayal of character. Zweig's essays include studies of Honoré de Balzac, Charles Dickens, and Fyodor Dostoevsky (Drei Meister, 1920; Three Masters) and of Friedrich Hölderlin, Heinrich von Kleist, and Friedrich Nietzsche (Der Kampf mit dem Dämon, 1925; Master Builders). He achieved popularity with Sternstunden der Menschheit (1928; The Tide of Fortune), five historical portraits in miniature. He wrote full-scale, intuitive rather than objective, biographies of the French statesman Joseph Fouché (1929), Mary Stuart (1935), and others. His stories include those in Verwirrung der Gefühle (1925; Conflicts). He also wrote a psychological novel, Ungeduld des Herzens (1938; Beware of Pity), and translated works of Charles Baudelaire, Paul Verlaine, and Emile Verhaeren.
Most recently, his works provided the inspiration for 2014 film The Grand Budapest Hotel.

are the stories comprising this collection. I have read the volumes 1 and 2 back to back,in reverse order, and have really enjoyed both the volumes. True to the name, the collections are a Kaleidoscope of stories with diverse backgrounds, each story reverbrating with a life in its own manner but all of them held closely together by the distinctiveness of style which is uniquely Zweig's. Though these are English translations of the originals and I don't know if they do justice to the writer but even in translation the one thing that really shines forth is Zweig's love and understanding of each of the characters. For even when the characters are not likeable, you kind of feel empathy for them and try to understand them. For it seems that for the writer, it is more important to portray his characters as humans who are troubled by the inevitable or sudden happenings in life rather than be judgemental of their actions or consequences for them. His characters are believable and not larger than life so that their portrayals are never heroic or tragic in extreme but bear a semblence akin to the sometimes common or grave tribulations faced by common people. And perhaps that is why these stories move you so much.

Leer a Zweig es leer las emociones más hermosas y humanas de la existencias: la desesperación, el amor, el miedo o la incertidumbre, por ejemplo. Historias pequeñas, de personas pequeñas en un mundo pequeño e insignificante; historias gigantes de soñadores y soñadoras colosales. Maravillosa lectura.

En el tomo de Editorial Juventud se incluyen once relatos. De estos he decidido leer siete de un tirón y dejar los cuatro restantes para más adelante, cuando en mi vida llena de subidas y bajadas, necesite la palabra de aliento de mi amigo más querido.

Deje para el último el que creo es el mejor cuento de la antología y fue accidental. La verdad leí a Zweig sin estar segura de que esperar, la narración es muy bella sin duda, tiene una forma de usar las palabras que me parece poética. Hay algunos cuentos que no me gustaron como los demás, pero en general disfruté de cada lectura y me enganché fácil con cada historia. Lo que si, siento que se nota la época en que vivió el autor, sus comentarios sobre la mujer lo dejan en evidencia. No es algo que critique cuando leo autores de otra época, pero si lo comento porque no me gusta hacer como que no esta. Creo que fue un buen libro para iniciar con él y la verdad me dieron ganas de leer mas ficción suya.

Son relatos en los que en realidad no pasa gran cosa, pero hay que ver cómo describe las situaciones, cómo perfila a cada personaje, sus sentimientos, sus inquietudes... y mira que ha sido un libro que me he leído con calma y espaciado en el tiempo ¿eh? Pues no se cómo pero todavía recuerdo a los personajes de los relatos que leí en enero. Debe ser la magia de Stefan :)

No he conectado con Zweig. Algunas historias bien, otras las he leído casi por (auto) obligación. Dejaré al autor en barbecho, tal vez en otro momento me entre mejor.

Um conjunto de contos bem escritos, fortes em simbolismo e concebidos para levar à reflexão sobre determinados aspectos morais. Infelizmente, foi este mesmo teor moral que me repeliu, lembrando-me as lengalengas que fui obrigado a ouvir nos meus anos de catequese (aliás, alguns dos contos são, simplesmente, histórias bíblicas alongadas).

Em suma, intelectualmente, reconheço o valor da escrita e da história; a nível pessoal, não me agradou. Não posso dar mais do que 2,5 a 2,6 estrelas.
