In fact, you forget Milie is a mail-order bride. You will not like her "to be" mother-in-law. And the child. The little girl who never speaks. Then speaks to Millie. Why?
A town that walks around with its nose in the air. Looking down, condeming Mllie's intended. And anyone associated with him.
You will suspect the "evil one" early. But that does not matter.
Beware though. You might want to carve out a few hours. I got to a certain part of the book and I couldn't stand it. I had to finish it.
It's a mystery. It's a quiet, growing love story. It's someone learning the hard way that being nasty never works. You will lose. And just because a little girl *is* little, it doesn't mean she doesn't see. And she doesn't remember. And that she can't find some way to reveal what she knows.
Again, best mail-order bride book I've ever read. I'll enjoy this one again.
Eliza came to help Jonah with his niece Millie, Jonah was helping raise his niece with his Mother. Millie was very quiet and hardly ever spoke after her Mother passed. But, Eliza could tell there was something more bothering Millie, it was fear. It's a good thing Eliza listens and pays attention. This is such a great book, but, i think Mrs. Hale, Jonah,s Mother should be called Karen!!!!!!!
The story captured me from the start. It’s past my bedtime and tomorrow is the earliest rising day of the week. But you know how it goes; “just one more chapter “. The book is a romance wrapped in a mystery which slowly unspools. I am definitely looking for more books by this author !
