He was also actively involved with Bengali cinema as well as Bollywood. His most famous creation is the fictional detective Byomkesh Bakshi.
He wrote different forms of prose: novels, short stories, plays and screenplays. However, his forte was short stories and novels. He wrote historical fiction like Kaler Mandira, GourMollar (initially named as Mouri Nodir Teere), Tumi Sandhyar Megh, Tungabhadrar Teere (all novels), Chuya-Chandan, Maru O Sangha (later made into a Hindi film named Trishangni) and stories of the unnatural with the recurring character Baroda. Besides, he wrote many songs and poems.
Awards: 'Rabindra Puraskar' in 1967 for the novel 'Tungabhadrar Tirey'. 'Sarat Smriti Purashkar' in 1967 by Calcutta University.

অনবদ্য , অসাধারণ, অনন্য... সুবিশেষণে সারাদিন ভূষিত করলেও এই গ্রন্থের মর্যাদা যথার্থ হবে কিনা সন্দেহ! লেখকের হৃদয়স্পর্শী প্রাকৃতিক বিবরণ, সুচুতুর ও রমণীয় বাকল্যাপ জাল, এবং অবিস্মরণীয় সব চরিত্র মোহমুগ্ধ করে রেখেছে.... সময়কে বিভিন্ন ঐতিহাসিক পটভূমিকায় সুচারুরূপে উপস্থাপন লেখকের দক্ষতার জ্বলন্ত নিদর্শন স্বরূপ...
সত্যি যে তৃপ্তি পেলাম তাতে সুসাহিত্যের পিপাসাটা আরও দৃঢ় হলো... ঈশ! লেখক আরো ক'টা ঐতিহাসিক উপন্যাস রচনা করলে কী ভালোই না হতো! আফসোস!!

All the 5 stories are based on Indian history of different times. The characters and stories are simply great. The language is superb, creation of curiosity in the minds of reader is fantastic.
