I wanted to give 4 stars because I am glad to be able to read a fairly interesting book in French and because the characters are likeable. The story was quite credible in the first 14 chapters and I grew to believe that the children would uncover a group of cheaters or thieves in the last chapters. After all a good story is writing itself if the author does not force it into an unrealistic direction. But this is exactly what happened to this poor book and the last two chapters just spoiled everything. I feel sorry for the story which could not unfold because it had to give way to a fashionable topic and a BIG SHOW. It's a shame.
It feels a bit like a mystery written in the 1960s, with the characters very wide eyed and innocent. The plot is interesting enough for a kids book, though the ending was perhaps tied up a bit too simply. In terms of learning French it's very good because I think it is written in a relatively simple style.
Another installment in this mystery series! Great for keeping up with French. This one was a bit slower paced and escalated quickly, but still entertaining.
‘Le Mystère du train de la nuit’ (‘The Mystery of the Night Train’) is a short novel about two children who investigate the suspicious activity surrounding a locomotive pulling a single railcar that operates every night, and only at night, over a distance of a few kilometers. The intended audience for this book is children, beginning at age 8, according to the publisher. For a reader learning French at an intermediate level, this novel is a good choice. The language is straightforward, and the story is engaging and suspenseful. The plot is implausible; but that’s what you should expect, going into a suspense story intended for children. The plot has Scooby Doo vibes. No spoilers here, but the reader should be warned that the plot becomes surprisingly dark at the end. On the whole, it’s a pleasant read for an adult looking for comprehensible input in the French language. However, this book cannot be recommended for young children, despite what the publisher says.
I'm really glad to share my thoughts about this fun read. I am an older student of the French language and this book was fairly easy to read and it kept my attention while keeping me in suspense. It made me feel young again and reminded me of the way young people act and feel. The grammar and the vocabulary is easily accessible for any age and ability.
It’s written for kids so not necessarily gripping, but as a learner it’s good because the chapters are short enough to read in 20min, and on the kindle it’s easy to look up words and flag them to follow up later.
