This was really good, I was coming up with so many theories that I made myself go a little crazy and that's the best compliment I can give to a psychological thriller!!!
Ruth wakes up, covered in blood, in a remote cottage she was staying at with her friend, but her friend Maura is missing.. Detectives Ben and Liam are assigned to the case, listening to her story and investigating, but things aren't always as they seem.. When a body is found, is Ruth's story really believable, or is she hiding things?
I'm not going to say a lot about the characters because I don't want to give something away by accident, but I will say that Ben and Liam were an amazing duo, I think they complemented each other perfectly and I actually loved the way Ben's mind worked. Cara was a great addition too.
I liked the path the investigation took and the pace we got the answers to our questions. The sense of distrust and doubt followed me throughout the whole book, from the island, to Dublin and even to Australia and nothing beats that feeling..
I absolutely loved the setting, Ireland is one of my favourite places, even when the atmosphere is as moody as the weather..
I usually read thrillers all at once, because I need to have all the answers immediately, but this time I wasn't able to read it in one day and that honestly made this a much better experience.. I was constantly thinking about it, trying to figure what really happened and while most of my theories were right, some of them were a little bit outlandish, but I blame my imagination for that.. I never had the whole story though, some things really surprised me and it went so much deeper than I ever imagined..
Overall, I had so much fun driving myself crazy with all the possible scenarios and I really enjoyed the story and the conclusion we got!!
I never read something by this author before, but I'll definitely be reading more now.

This is a standalone thriller from Jane Casey and it’s really good!
Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Special Crimes Unit which is based in Dublin, send detectives Ben Butler and Liam Farrell to Co Mayo to investigate a potential homicide. There’s a huge amount of blood at The Shadow House on the isolated Bernmullet Peninsula but as yet no victim is found. Ruth O’Rourke is soaked in someone else’s blood, her friend Maura Ellender is missing. Ruth slowly begins to tell the story of how they came to be at the small house clinging to the cliffs in the middle of nowhere. She seems eager to help but is the truth everything she doesn’t say??
First of all, the setting is truly amazing and seems to be a character in its own right, positively oozing atmosphere. The mood of the place matches the fluctuating moods of the characters, with of course, matching vagaries of the Irish weather.
The plot is a really good, suspenseful psychological slow burner without being established right from the start as Ben and Liam play good cop, bad cop to try to unearth the truth. Grabbing hold of that is as elusive trying to grasp on fog, it’s hard to see exactly where the truth lies and who can be trusted and it keeps me guessing right to the end.
The characterisation is really good and both cops are likeable with their changing dynamics being particularly interesting. Maura and Ruth seem to be chalk and cheese but is Ruth as big a wallflower as she seems? Or something else entirely?? Throughout the dynamics between those two are a constant source of wonder(ing) and the Ben/Ruth situation is fascinating with varying kinds of tension.
As the storytelling progresses, there’s twist after twist and that continues to the end, with several shocks in store, one of which makes me gasp out loud. The ending is good and keeps me on the edge of my seat, trying to figure it all out. It’s certainly a rollercoaster read.
Jane Casey has created two really interesting characters in Ben and Liam and it would be great to read more about them in future. Overall, this is a cracking read from beginning to end and one I can recommend to fans of the genre.

Jane Casey is an author I've been meaning to read for quite some time, and as a standalone, Everything She Didn't Say was a great introduction to her writing. Combining an atmospheric Irish setting with a character-driven mystery, it kept me questioning both the characters and the truth behind what really happened.
At the heart of the story is the complicated friendship between Ruth and Maura. From early on, it's obvious there's an unhealthy imbalance between them. Ruth seems completely captivated by Maura and eager to be part of her world, while Maura gradually begins to shape the friendship on her own terms, or so it seems. What I enjoyed most was how the story kept shifting my perspective. Although I had an inkling about one aspect of the mystery, I certainly didn't see everything unfolding the way it eventually did. By the end, I found myself thinking back over everything I'd been told about their past and questioning how much of it I'd actually understood.
One of the highlights for me was the partnership between Ben Butler and Liam Farrell. Although they're initially reluctant to work together, they quickly become a great investigative team, and I'd happily read more books featuring the two of them. Ben is quieter and more thoughtful, while Liam is more direct and instinctive, and their contrasting personalities work really well together. I also enjoyed the glimpses we got of Cara, who has a relatively small role but feels like she has plenty of potential if this were to become a series.
The setting was another standout as I'm always drawn to stories set in Ireland, so the rugged County Mayo coastline paired with an isolated cliff-top cottage was already ticking a lot of boxes for me. Jane Casey's writing made it easy to picture every scene, and I found myself just as invested in the setting as I was in the mystery.
Blending toxic friendships, unreliable narration and a police procedural investigation, this was a mystery that kept me engaged from beginning to end. It constantly had me questioning where my sympathies should lie and whether I could trust what I was being told. If you enjoy atmospheric psychological thrillers with layered characters and twists that encourage you to reassess everything you've read, I'd definitely recommend giving this one a try.

Everything She Didn't Say is a layered, clever police procedural that was suspenseful and compelling. The narration masterfully added emotion and intensity as the plot unfolded. The story is atmospheric and haunting with several twists and turns throughout. I could definitely see this being the first installment of a gripping series. I crashed into this thriller the same way I once walked into a glass door at a shopping centre — loud, embarrassing, and immediately questioning every life choice that led me there.
Ruth arrives at a cliff‑top cottage on the Irish coast expecting peace, ocean views, and maybe a smug little moment of “look at me living my best life.” She’s with her best friend Maura, planning a month of calm, wine, and pretending adulthood isn’t exhausting.
And then?
Chaos.
Absolute chaos.
Ruth wakes up alone.
Covered in someone else’s blood.
Maura is gone — not “stepped out for milk” gone, but “vanished like she was erased from the timeline” gone.
Me: “Oh fantastic, we’re in the ‘I did not sign up for this’ phase.”
The police look at Ruth like she’s the world’s most inconvenient puzzle. She’s a suspect, but she’s also the only witness. The only person who might know what happened. The only person who can help.
But here’s the kicker:
Her version of events?
It’s… wobbly.
Patchy.

A solid 4‑star thriller — twisty, moody, Irish as hell, and built around a woman whose silence is more dangerous than her words.

➡️ A NEW SERIES?
Could this be the start of a new series? The author is best known for her Maeve Kerrigan series. In this book, she introduces Garda officers Ben Butler and Liam Farrell. I was wowed by the team and their chemistry and I hope they’ll be back.
➡️ WHY 3 STARS?
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Jessica Regan. The book unfolded from three POVs: the woman and two Garda officers.
Jessica Regan's narration came across as flat and tired. And when she sounded tired, I became tired.
The audiobook would have worked much better with three narrators instead of just one. The single narrator blurred the transitions and undermined the tension and suspense.

I enjoyed this story from Casey, finding it incredibly twisty and surprising along the way. However, I found it was a bit prolonged in places and wished that most of the story hadn’t been told through character recollections.
There are some dramatic crime scenes in this book and the author leaves it ambiguous until the very end who is behind the murders. When Ruth is discovered at a dreadful crime scene in an isolated cottage, it is uncertain whether she has been framed or if there is more to her story. Detectives Ben and Liam react contrastingly to Ruth’s story and I found it interesting how this helped to shape the plot development.
The investigation takes a look at Ruth and her flatmate, Maura: both their recent movements and their pasts. Yet, just when you think the Detectives are getting closer to the truth, Casey adds more complications to the plot. It sends the Detectives and readers spiralling into another tangent of the investigation.
It certainly reaches a dramatic conclusion and there was no way I anticipated the story moving to Australia. Even when I thought I knew the answers behind the crimes, the writer adds further twists to the story to create a shocking and clever ending.
However, over time I wished that more of the story had been unfolding in “real time”. So much of the plot is developed through the Detectives questioning Ruth and other key people in the crime. Not only are readers then given the influence of hindsight, but I found it distanced me from the events taking place. I was frustrated by how much dialogue there was recounting events, instead wanting to be with the characters as it happened.
A good read where I completely appreciated the twists and turns of the narrative. It took me a while to get into this book and I think it could have been pacier to reflect the unexpected developments. On the other hand, the writer definitely played with my mind and I loved how it kept me guessing right until the very end.

Poor reworking of Strangers on a Train, obvious unreliable narrator.

It pains me to give Jane Casey two stars, but I don't see the point of this book, it feels like it was half assed and very anticlimactic. Not on par with the Maeve Kerrigan series.

I really enjoyed this book, this is a great introduction to Jane Casey’s writing as it is a standalone. It was so intriguing and I felt like I couldn’t trust anyone in the book. It was also a very satisfying ending. I would definitely recommend.

This is my first book by Jane Casey, and I really enjoyed it. Her Maeve Kerrigan series looks good, but I've not yet tried it. I don't know if this book is the first of a new series or if it's meant to be a standalone, but I'd love if the detectives were featured in other books.
This procedural thriller is fast-paced and engaging. It begins with two detectives going to the scene of a crime in which a young woman is found at a remote Irish cabin, covered in blood and her best friend missing without a trace. Detectives Ben Butler and Liam Farrell have different ways of working a case, but each agree that there must be more to the story than what Ruth O'Rourke is telling them. Is she the innocent victim she seems or could she be a killer? I kept changing my mind as I read the book and had so many theories about what the true story of Ruth and her friend Maura Ellender really was. Much of the story is told through Ruth's version of things that had occurred in the past, so the reader is as much in the dark as the detectives about whether or not she's telling the truth. There are a few shockers before the story wraps up in a satisfying ending. I enjoyed the procedural elements of the book, and I love being surprised by a thriller. Everything She Didn't Say had a great combination of both.

My first Jane Casey book and it’s a twisty tale where you’re not sure which one of the narrators are unreliable, one or both?
Moira and Ruth are two women thrown together by fate who move to a remote island off the Irish coast for a job one of them has applied for. It’s a secret that Ruth has joined Moira despite impersonating her at the interview. They look similar, both have secrets and when people start dying the guards are on the case. Moira goes missing and Ruth is left to tell the tale but is she telling the truth?

A woman is found covered in blood-stained clothes. At first, she won't speak. Then, she begins to talk about her friend Maura and that the pair of them were staying in a cliff-top house together. However, the locals only remember seeing one person, and there is no trace of a second individual.
I have been so excited to read something from this author, and I am absolutely gutted that it wasn't for me.
If it hadn't been for the audio, I would have DNF'd it. I found it extremely slow, and I couldn't get on board with the writing style whatsoever. It's very atmospheric, but it struggled to hold my attention. I can't say much else, as I don't want to give away any spoilers.
Since finishing the book, I have seen a few reviews that this book is very different to her other work, so I will definitely try something different from this author.
I have been so excited to read something from this author, and I am absolutely gutted that it wasn't for me.

Boring and unpredictable. Unprofessional cop. Found myself so disgusted with his weird and sudden emotions for the suspect that I wished for her to be the murderer. Characters I didn’t care about. Loved her Maeve Carrigan series, but every time that I’ve picked up one of her standalones I have been disappointed.

I've read books by Jane Casey before, the Meave Kerrigan series and enjoyed what I read. I did fall out of love with them though as I no longer enjoy police procedure books. I did however give this book ago as it was a standalone.
What I did enjoy was the premise of the mystery surrounding Ruth. Could she be believed or is she lying. A typical unreliable narrator.
I was enjoying the book for the most part but towards the end I was losing interest. I felt i was becoming bogged down as the story was droning on. I was getting confused in places as there was a lot going on. There was a nice little twist at the end but by this time I had had enough.
I would possibly try another book by the author in the future.

I was enjoying the book for the most part but towards the end I was losing interest. I felt i was becoming bogged down as the story was droning on. I was getting confused in places as there was a lot going on. There was a nice little twist at the end but by this time I had had enough.
I would possibly try another book by the author in the future.

Ruth gives her account of how the friendship began and there's a slightly one-sided, almost codependent dynamic to the friendship, with Ruth clearly captivated by her more outgoing, vivacious friend.
It took me a little while to get into, but I ended up really enjoying the twisty unravelling of Ruth and Maura's story, and found myself running through several different scenarios as I read (none of which were correct!). Casey does a great job eking out the suspense and intrigue right through to the end.

This was so gripping and so engaging as i tried to get a handle on what the truth actually was. The narration was really good and i felt the emotion and tension. It seemed a fairly simple mystery to start with what happened in the cottage and where was the other'lady' . The story had me on the edge of my seat as just as i thought one thing something happened which changed my mind entirely . Complex characters who were flawed and anyalised in equal measure, Ruth was everything and nothing all at once and then the final 20% omg i was kicking myself for not seeing the total reveal. This was so good, a real good standalone mystery that despite its length felt real . Thank you netgalley, author, publisher and narrator for this highly recommended 5 star listen. The only sad thing is i think id have to wait a long time to relisten or reread this as the ending really stuck with me.

I felt there was a back story to both Ben and Liam and am not sure whether they have featured in other books by this author but would actually love to read more about them and Cara the detective who assisted them during their investigation.
Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this and the Narrator did a great job of bringing the characters to life

Everything She Didn't Say is a fantastic twisty and fast paced thriller! I love Jane Casey books so I was delighted to hear her speak about this book at the Kenny's event last Friday so much so I started the book the next day! Jane Casey has became an auto-buy author for me since I started her Maeve Kerrigan series and this book does not disappoint and also has fantastic characters and plot to keep you entertained.
Everything She Didn't Say is set in the West coast of Ireland where Ruth arrives at a cliff top cottage overlooking the Atlantic with her friend Maura. They won an application to stay in this cottage for a month for free in exchange for them to create some artistic work inspired by the cottage. However, Ruth one morning wakes up alone covered in blood, something has happened and Maura is missing. Ruth is now suspect and key to finding out what really happened. She's eager to help detectives Ben and Liam but is she over eager in getting her story out there?
Brilliant plot and characters in this one! The detectives Ben and Liam are so lovable plus I love the banter they have, despite being such different characters. I enjoyed how we got a bit of background on them as well as the case they were solving, it added another layer and hopefully we'll see these characters again solving another case. Ruths character I didn't know whether to believe or not for most of this book as she tended to leave some details out when recalling the events. However, she does make you feel sorry for her when she recalls her toxic relationship with Maura. You often wonder why they are friends and why Ruth lets her walk all over her.

Jane Casey is one of my favourite crime writers, I have rated a number of her Maeve Kerrigan books 5 star. I am a huge fan. So I was delighted to receive an advanced copy of Everything She Didn’t Say recently and couldn’t wait to get stuck into it. And overall I enjoyed it - I didn’t not like it but I also didn’t love it as much as other books I’ve read.
Let me start with what worked, as there’s a lot of positives here. The book is very easy to read and very hard to put down. I was never able to see where the story was going so that kept me intrigued and interested. Every time I thought I knew what was going on it surprised me and that’s always a plus for me. I also never saw the ending coming. It gripped me from the start when we meet Ruth whose friend Maura is missing. Ruth is found covered in blood - whose though? I also enjoyed the setting at the start - a remote cottage in the West of Ireland and I think Casey really describes the wildness of this part of Ireland beautifully.
I was fascinated by the detectives we meet in this story - Ben and Liam. In some ways, I found myself more interested in them and their dynamic and background than in the central storyline. The female detective Cara (who we don’t meet until later in the book) was also an interesting character that I would have loved to read more of. The interactions between these 2-3 characters made the book for me - but there wasn’t enough of them. I would definitely be interested in trying another book with these characters again and see them fleshed out more. There was hints at back stories that wasn’t really fleshed out - but if the hints were anything to go by I think this could be a fab series in the future.
Where the book didn’t work quite so well for me was in with the female victim/ suspect. There are 2 neither of whom I felt I connected with (Ruth and Maura). As characters they were very unlikeable and while unlikeable characters can make a book interesting (Delia in Liz Nugent’s Skin Deep comes to mind for those of you who have read this), in this case they just irritated me and didn’t make the book interesting to me. The Maeve Kerrigan novels tend to pull me in emotionally, whereas this one kept me hooked more through curiosity than through any real attachment to the characters. The dynamic between one of the detectives and one of the female characters was also not something I particularly enjoyed.
My biggest issue, though, was the number of twists towards the end and the introduction of yet another back story to explain what was going on (I don’t want to say too much to spoil things and tbh it got a bit confusing for me by this point!) I know many readers love twist after twist, but I am not a fan. I kept wondering if it would ever end!
Overall though this was a solid and entertaining read from an author whose work I usually love. Even though it wasn’t a favourite for me, I did enjoy that it kept me guessing right until the end. I would happily read more about Ben, Liam and Cara in future books, as I found myself wanting to spend much more time with those characters. The book is still a page turner and so absolutely worth reading if you're a Casey fan. I’ll be very curious to see what the writer does with the 3 detectives next, because I think there's something really promising there if she decides to go back, (and I really hope she does). One thing that has come from the reading of this is that I am now determined to go and read all the other non Maeve books she has written as it has piqued my interest and I do think this will be enjoyed by other fans - just maybe not as much as the Maeve series which gripped me from the very first book I read!

Ruth is found in blood soaked clothes at a remote Irish cottage. She tells the police a story about her missing friend Maura and says they fought the in the days before she disappeared. But the locals report only ever seeing one woman and with Ruth swearing that she told the truth, do the answers like in everything she didn’t say?
I was late to the party with this author, however once I finally got round to reading her books I realised what I was missing and a new book by her now is a must read. As much as I enjoy the Maeve Kerrigan series, I was looking forward to reading another standalone by her. This was another very well written, atmospheric thriller, that had me constantly second guessing myself, through the multiple misdirections and twists the story took.
The characters were interesting but it did take a while for me to connect to the detectives, they did grow on me though and I would enjoy reading more about them, whilst delving deeper into their personalities. This was a slow burn and the pace let it down slightly at times, however the fantastic story telling, unreliable narrators and compelling nature of the book made up for this. Jane Casey has a fantastic ability to create characters that really draw you in and i’m really hoping Ben Butler makes more appearances in the future. A great read with an especially satisfying ending.

I loved Ruth’s character and how brilliantly juxtaposed she was. I never fully trusted her and often found her manipulative, yet at the same time I empathised with her and really felt her vulnerability. Ben and Liam’s relationship was another highlight for me. Their chalk-and-cheese dynamic worked perfectly, and it’s easy to see how Jane Casey excels at writing series when she can establish such strong, compelling characters in a standalone novel.
I love a thriller that keeps you on your toes and effortlessly blindsides you, and this one delivered that in heaps. At no point did I know what was really going on, and I was constantly coming up with new theories. The psychological suspense comes from that constant uncertainty, while the moody, unsettling setting added another layer of eeriness too.
Despite the number of twists and the complexity and intensity of the plot, the ending was neat and satisfying. Everything was meticulously constructed and masterfully executed, and it was exactly the kind of psychological thriller I love.

I'm a big fan of Jane Casey's Maeve Kerrigan series (which I'm determined to finish this year!), so I was excited to pick up a standalone book by her in the meantime.
And this was another gripping thriller that pulled me straight in.
The starting premise of finding a character covered in somebody else's blood with no memory and another missing person who is coincidentally her doppelganger and has no trace had me hooked.
I really enjoyed how the story unfolded from there, especially under the direction of the two detectives. I really warmed to Ben but was worried he was too easily influenced, while Liam wasn't as welcoming but definitely felt more focused. So they worked really well together.
The mystery kept me guessing throughout and the twists certainly took me off guard, with many red herrings along the way.
A real rollercoaster of a ride, I highly recommend this for thriller fans!

A super engaging, intriguing and gripping story. It’s like an atmospheric murder mystery thriller with the main witness being an unreliable narrator. I constantly questioned things and had a few theories.

When Ruth finds herself covered in someone else's blood and her best friend Maura disappeared, she's eager to help the police in the investigation. But everything she didn't say might be what they really needed to know.
Wow, this was a suspenseful one! I found myself hooked as I followed the investigation, even coming up with scenarios myself as to what had happened. If you like your thrillers twisted and clever, then this is your type of book. I was lucky enough to listen to the audiobook, which was narrated so well. I can't wait to read more by this author.
