Fake dating turns deadly at a sinister couples retreat in this swoony horror rom-com from the internationally bestselling author of How to Kill a Guy in Ten Dates.

Filmmaker Laurie Hamilton knows a red flag when she sees one, and the Kindred Souls couples retreat sets off every alarm. On a hunch there’s a story to investigate, Laurie heads undercover with Connor Kincaid, a dangerously handsome podcaster and the almost-boyfriend she swore she’d never see again. Posing as the perfect match, they infiltrate the Catskills getaway to discover whatever Kindred Souls has been hiding.

Once inside, there’s no leaving. Surrounded by lovers desperate to prove they’ve found their twin flame, Laurie (with Connor’s help) quickly realizes the retreat isn’t about finding love—it’s about deciding who deserves it. As couples engage in increasingly dangerous tests of their devotion, Laurie must decide what she’s willing to risk, and whether the man she’s secretly falling for is the key to making it out alive.

For fans of Brynne Weaver and Grady Hendrix, While You Were Screaming delivers a sharp, darkly funny romance that proves falling in love can either be the time of your life…or the end of it.

Shailee Thompson is an author who writes women with smart mouths, soft hearts and strong wills... then she puts them in the deepest of sh*t. Her debut novel, How to Kill a Guy in Ten Dates (Out February 2026!), is a Slasher Rom-Com that proves all is fair in love and gore.

When not writing or talking about her characters like they’re real people, you can find her kidnapping her friends' dogs or competing with the person next to her at the gym (...yes, Pilates can be competitive).

Shailee Thompson just has a way of writing that removes your ability to be able to put her books down. It’s witty, engaging, and fucking hilarious. Some of the stuff she writes has me literally cackling at my Kindle. I didn’t really know that I wanted Laurie’s story (I probably thought about it, especially in the first chapter of HTKAGITD), but this story is just absolutely perfect. If you love academic rivals to lovers, good banter, and a slow burn, this is for you. The true crime and cult knowledge is just the icing on the cake.

Y’all thought I wouldn’t shut up about How to Kill a Guy In Ten Dates? Just wait. I’m about to be INSUFFERABLE.

While You Were Screaming was F-U-N. I honestly didn't realize it was a sequel when I requested it, but that didn't cause any issues with settling right into the novel. There's enough of a recap to understand Laurie's past trauma, and now I have a new book to seek out.

The writing and story are both engaging, and the chemistry between Laurie and Connor is undeniable. It's a sexy, enemies-to-lovers, thriller with great pacing and amusing banter. Is it a cozy, rom-com slasher book? It just might be!

Thanks so much to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC. And now I'm off to read "How to Kill a Guy in 10 Dates."

Woot, woot! Laurie got her own book. It's what she deserves.

I was rereading How to Kill a Guy in Ten Dates and wondering if Shailee Thompson had written a second book. The next day, I got access to the ARC.
