This author is a good writer, in the sense the scenes written are done well. It’s clear there’s been a lot of effort put in and it’s definitely better written than some others I’ve recently picked up. This is also the author’s debut book, so I think the series could grow.

That said, the characters and plot just didn’t land for me. The banter was good though, like I loved when the main characters worked together and figured out how to better trust each other. I wish they would talk a bit more and share more scenes outside of training or fighting.

The backdrop to the plot had potential, but the stakes didn’t match the actions of the characters. The plot was also propelled by the characters keeping secrets and not sharing information and I personally dislike that.

I also wouldn’t call it enemies to lovers, there was no reason for the MMC to behave the way he was. Sure you can have some level of resentment but if you are going to go from enemies to lovers, there should actually be a good reason to be enemies.

Overall I found it to be rather predictable. And literally no one is heeding the warnings of the gods and goddesses. Usually prophesies confuse me and I never even try to guess what them mean, but these are super obvious and I feel like the main characters are aggressively oblivious and it takes way too many proof points before they begin to put two and two together.

On top of it all, I love a good love triangle but there was literally no angst or juicy build up between them all. So it felt like a wasted opportunity to dive into the complicated feelings surrounding that.

The magic system is cool but we don’t dive into it nearly enough. The combination of gods and goddesses, as well as ancient magic is right up my ally and I thought it was a good way to help differentiate this series with other popular books, but it was kept somewhat surface level with quick explanations. Outside of the magic, it felt a bit too much like fourth wing, sprinkled in with Harry Potter. And I’m really not a stickler for this kind of thing, but it felt really obvious in far too many places. I’m not exaggerating by saying half the plot is just a mirror to fourth wing, with a much more surface level found family.

Again I hate to leave a review like this because I really do think the author has promise, but for me a 3 star book has to have been pretty enjoyable and this one frustrated me. At the same time, I also had to finish it because it was intriguing enough to keep going. So all in all, fairly conflicted because I wanted to love this so much.

I received this book as an arc from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Wow what an amazing book, at first I’ll admit I was skeptical as it sounded very similar to fourth wing just without dragons and whilst you can definitely see inspiration there, this is a whole separate idea on its own. I absolutely loved the light and dark parallels and the author has really started to build up a complex world.

There was some intense scenes and some that made me emotional especially as I started to grow attached to a lot of characters, the ending! I was not ready for it even if most of the book had been a lead up to it!

I’m so excited to read the next book in this instalment as I would love to see the author explore the world, bonds and characters more and develop what’s already a promising series!

This book deserves to be a bestseller! I don't know if I finished the book or if the book finished me. This book will be my personality for the next few business weeks.

I first wanted to say that I really did enjoy this book! I love the banter and the characters and the story. Heck Ryan is my favorite! I love the tension between Aiden and Ruin and how fate is forcing them together by the moon goddess and sun god! Spice is very minimal but there’s hope for more spice in next book. I was shocked with the ending and I did cry a bit.
I am a huge fan of fourth wing. I practically live and breathe that storyline so with that being said this book has so many similarities that I’m torn between my feelings about it. I know for a fact, if I did not read fourth wing multiple times, I would’ve probably enjoyed this book more only because the similarities are so similar (yet different) that I already knew what was going to happen in some scenarios. You have characters that are identical to some of the characters in fourth wing. The storyline follows a lot of what happened in book one of fourth wing right up to daggers helping her get up the gauntlet because she’s too short. It is very similar and treaded a line for me.
With that being said I did love the story and stayed up way past my bed time to finish it! So for those of you love forth wing or even the ones who couldn’t get into forth wing but loved the idea of it then this is the book for you!
Thank you Hailey for giving me the opportunity to ARC read this story! I look forward to book 2!

I loved this book! I admit I was a little nervous at first that it was going to be too much like Fourth Wing but that feeling didn’t last long. Finished it in two days. There are a few similarities but this definitely its own story. The main characters are well developed for the first story. I’m excited to get to know them better in the next book.

I appreciate the banter so much. I love good banter and snark in characters. Can’t wait for the next book. I’m sure I will read this a few times while waiting for the next book. I don’t do that often, usually once is enough.

Haley did a great job with world and character building.

If you like Fourth Wing enemy to lovers & war academy vibes, this will be right up your alley, though the spice is pretty minimal in this book. There are plenty of other emotions felt throughout the story though!

I can’t wait for the next installment to continue the story line!

I received an arc of this book and was asked to post an honest review.

Okay let’s start with the beginning, the first four chapters you will see many similarities to fourth wing. However, if you are able to look past them this story is amazing. I loved the banter between the main characters. I had all the emotions while reading this book. I laughed, cried, kicked my feet, everything! I’ll be honest when I started it I didn’t know if i would like it, but I’m so glad I pushed through. Once I got started I couldn’t put it down. Thank you for sending me the arc Haley. I can’t wait to see where book two takes us.
