Claire the owner of Harvest Bistro takes out the trash to the dumpster after a heard day. To her surprise she finds an arm sticking out of the dumpster that is attached to a dead body. Claire calls the police which her Brother Hank is the Chief. Along with Hank is the handsome PI Jake. He takes Claire's breath away. Even though he is but he comes across as a cocky know it all and she doesn't know if she can tolerate him. As they are investigating the murder Claire starts to get some threatening phone calls and more to make her a believer to keep her out of the way. Can they solve the murder and not fall in love at the same time? Claire needs Jake's help but what will it cost her?

I thought Avery's first book was remarkable. The characters pop and work well together, the scenes were written with passion as it comes through with the scenes with Clarie and Jake.
The twists and turns keep you on your toes though the read and you will not guess what goes on and who does what. The story is a hot romantic mystery that everyone should like.

Claire Layton owns and runs her small restaurant in Dry Creek Nebraska. The last thing she expects when taking the trash out at the end of her shift is to find a dead woman’s body in the dumpster; she is shocked by the discovery so calls the County Sheriff, her brother Hank.

Claire is the youngest of four siblings, her 3 older brothers are each alpha males who are fiercely protective of her and tower over her by at least a foot - when Claire receives an anonymous telephone call from the killer she calls ‘The voice of doom’ forcing her with an ultimatum to find the dead girls phone and her flash drive, she becomes his sole target and threatens her family if she doesn’t cooperate.

Complicating the matter is the arrival of Jake Warrick, a security expert hired by the deceased woman’s father to ensure the investigation goes in the right direction. Jake is sexy, sarcastic and cocky and is instantly attracted to Claire.

As more details pertaining to the case are discovered, we learn the family that has hired Jake may have ulterior motives and we are thrown into a plot filled with suspense, action and drama with a few light twists an turns.

I really liked the main characters, what Claire lacks in height (she is 5 foot) she certainly makes up for in personality. I adored her feisty, sarcastic, smart and witty attitude and her attraction to Jake was undeniable. Jake was dominant, sexy and unrelenting; he didn’t back down when it came to Claire and was fiercely protective. I enjoyed seeing their feelings unravel.

I enjoyed the Layton family dynamic, they were in it together – supportive and strong, I loved Claire’s take charge mother! I was saddened by what Jake was going through with his gravely ill father; it was a stressful time for him.

I really liked this novel; I enjoyed all of the characters and found even the secondary characters intriguing. Up a Dry Creek is a wonderful debut novel for Ms Flynn; I enjoyed her world building, humor, suspense, mystery and the romance.

The ending of this has left me questioning ‘which brother??’ and I can not wait to see what happens in the next installment of The Dry Creek Series.

I’ve read a few of Avery Flynn’s books before, and I’ve quite enjoyed them. Obviously, when this book became available for review, I took a chance. If you didn’t know, Dangerous Kiss, formerly known as Temptation Creek was first published in 2011. This year, this book got a face lift and a new name. I’ll be honest, the original covers never caught my eyes to give this book a glance. So, kudos to Ms. Flynn on the decision to update the covers. They are very sexy, eye catching and the book has a good story to back it up with.

Claire Layton was taking out the last bag of trash for the night. She was just closing up the restaurant when she finds a dead body in the dumpster. Cops came, reports taken and now, the investigation of the murder has begun. But not without the help of her deputy brother and Jake Warrick, a PI hired by the victim’s father. Things get complicated when the murderer’s focus turns to her.

I enjoyed Claire and Jake. They’re attraction from the start was obvious and palpable. While Claire was everything feisty, Jake was cool and collected, but when they get together, they are very sexy making them a very good match. Besides the romance, the murder mystery was was also enjoyable. Few scenes had me biting my nails. But what I enjoyed the most was getting to know a little more about The Layton family. They seem to have a very tight knit relationship. The snark between the siblings were very amusing, and Claire’s brothers are very intriguing. Needless to say, I am very excited and looking forward to the Layton Brothers’ story.

This intrigued me but then after finishing it I was like That’s just it? I was expecting more about the things that the villains are looking for. Maybe I was reading too much of the crime novels that is was craving for something gruesome. The love story was great though!

It takes a good contemporary romance to grab my attention and keep me reading to the end of the book. Up a Dry Creek definitely did that, and the cliffhanger at the end made me eager to read the next book.

By all accounts, Claire Layton is a successful woman- she has her MBA, she owns her own business, she has a great family and supportive friends, and is working hard at overcoming the breakup of the century and moving on with things in the romance department. Finding the body of a murder victim in her restaurant's dumpster and being contacted/blackmailed by the killer into recovering the victim's cell phone and flash drive is not up her alley in any way, shape or form, and Claire is justifiably freaked out.

Enter smokin' hot private investigator Jake Warrick, who freely admits that he's involved with the murder investigation at the request of the victim's father, to make sure that local law enforcement doesn't screw anything up. Since one of Claire's brothers is a cop, that goes over about as well as one might expect.

The sparks fly between these two from their first meeting. Loins are girded. Panties are dampened. Zippers are strained. All the while, danger is erupting all around them and the families on both sides are closing in to find out whether this is a serious relationship or something that needs to be nipped in the bud.

The family dynamics and development of the relationship take center stage, and the murder mystery is definitely relegated to the back burner. This is okay by me though, because the development of those relationships serves to advance the plot and lay the foundation for (I hope) future books. Example: Jake's dad has stage 4 lung cancer, and is still working at the family-owned security firm as the captain of the proverbial ship. Jake has to deal with the dawn of a new relationship as well as the realization that his dad won't be around for much longer; this added depth to Jake's character and also addressed a facet of life that doesn't show up in romance novels all that often. Many times, a family member will die, but it happens off screen and the characters find out about it after the fact. Here, we are confronted with a fact of life; albeit an unhappy one.

I was satisfied with the ending of the book; I admit that the relationship took center stage for me so I didn't care as much about the revelation of the murderer and the motives behind the crime as I would have with a story without the same level of relationship development. I will say, though, that I was happy that the author chose to resolve the geographical issues facing Claire and Jake the way she did (Claire lives in Dry Creek, Nebraska and Jake lives and works in Denver), that being in a way that was logical but didn't involve anyone doing anything stupid. Kudos all the way around.

Dry Creek might be a small town but to Claire Layotn and her brothers, it was home. Claire had a successful restaurant, and if her chef hadn’t just walked out she would be fine, except for the small mountain of debt and the dead body in her dumpster. When the killer wants to use Claire to retrive the dead girl’s phone and flash drive, things went straight to the crapper. Her over protective brother’s are smothering her, now add in the cocky, big city PI working for the dead girl’s family and Claire just wants it all to go away. Jake Warrick needs to wind this up quick and get back to his dying father, but this case is really starting to stink. Things just aren’t adding up and his rampant attraction to Claire Layton isn’t helping matters.

Whew! Have on your oven mitts when you're reading this one, because this is one HOT read. It must be true that danger is the ultimate aphrodisiac because, even though they initially fight the attraction, Jake and Claire are on each other like bees on honey. Neither of our protagonists are looking for a relationship, heck they're not even looking for a dinner date. Claire was seriously burned by her ex, and Jake has abandonment issues. Fate and her glorious bitchiness is gonna do what she does, when she wants to do it. I really liked Claire, she has a lot of small town chutzpah, and didn't need a man (lover or brother) to solve her problems. She was not afraid to take the bull by the horns, nor was she above doing a little protecting of her own.
Jake had severe commitment issues. He didn't mind a one or even a two night stand, but he had his own family matters to tend to. Thankfully he wises up and gives in gracefully.

The action happens quick and furiously, there is no down time. Make sure you have your drinks, and nibbles ready because you're not going to want to put this book down to get them. There are some sneaky twist Ms. Flynn tosses at the reader, and a few lighter moments as well. Claire's mother is a flat out hoot, and Claire's smelly dog Onion holds his own. I can't wait to read the Layton boy's stories. They need a little feminine influence. This promises to be a sexy, fun and compelling series, and I highly recommend it.

Claire had everything she could possibly want, minus some cooking skills. She'd always dreamed of being a chef but sadly possessed the skill of burning water. So she went after the next best thing, managing. She went to school, got her MBA, got her experience, and opened a wonderful restaurant back in her hometown. Forget the fact that she ended up back in her hometown because of a classical mistake in love. She would just have to be content with her restaurant. But, even in a quiet little town where the biggest crime committed was toilet papering the mayors house, simple things can turn your life upside down. Simple things like taking out the trash. That's a normal everyday thing that turns extraordinary when Claire discovers a dead body in her dumpster. But even a murder and triple threat from a vicious killer are nothing compared to the way Jake knocks her down.
Jake was doing a favor for his fathers biggest client. A simple job that should be over in less than 24 hours. Just go down there and make sure everything was in order surrounding the murder and that no one screwed anything up. Simple, until Jake butts up against the sexy restaurant owner. Claire has him jumping without asking and questioning his sanity. But how far will he go when his own intentions are compromised and its his family on the line?
This was a great read! It had it all! Murder, Lust, Love, Heartbreak, and Mystery! It sucked me in from the moment I picked it up and wouldn't release me until I finished. Jake and Claire are perfectly matched and but heads throughout the novel, and other things a well :). This book heats up several times and has you fanning yourself with anticipation. It was a hot ride right from the onset with these two, which helps suck the reader in by wondering who will make the first move. I loved Claire. Shes loyal and loving, with a very realistic look on life. Even if she is at times rather impulsive. Reacting instead of thinking it through which has a tendency to land her in a few sticky situations. Some ending up extremely pleasant! Cheers to a fabulous read!!!

Today's review is on Up A Dry Creek by Avery Flynn

I was able to read Up A Dry Creek in just one day. filled with murder, mystery, romance, and a plethora of twists and turn, I was unable to put it down for any length of time.

Claire Layton has always wanted to be a chef since she was a little girl, but when her inability to cook threatened that dream she decided to go to business school and become a restaurant owner instead. Who knew that one day at work could turn her world upside down.

Offering up the Full-Moon Special at Harvest Bistro, Claire notices a young, female patron texting on her phone. Nothing to unusual about that, until she takes the trash out to the dumpster at the end of the night. There she spots the same young, female with blood in her hair and obviously dead. Shortly after she is contacted by the killer. He wants the phone and flash drive the dead girl should have had on her but didn't. Now if she doesn't find it and give it to him, he will come after her and her family.

Jake Warrick is a private investigator who has been hired by the victim's father to also find the killer, the phone and flash drive. Intent to just do his job, he is surprised at the amount of attraction he feels towards Claire. And as the dangers to her increase so does his feelings.

The action is almost never ending as the two struggle to stay one step ahead of the bad guys and the sexual tension is so thick you want to take a big bite out of it. Even with the less than perfect editing.

Hot, Heavy, and Exciting, Up A Dry Creek is a welcome addition to anyone's library.

Up a Dry Creek captured my attention from the get go! When Claire finds a dead body in her garbage can, she becomes the target of a madman. Jake is brought in by the young girl’s family to investigate the murder and is instantly attracted to Claire. While fighting their attraction in order to find the person that killed the young woman, they soon realize that their sexual chemistry is more than either one can handle. As the investigation heats up, so do the feelings between Claire and Jake. We soon learn that all is not well with the family that hired Jake and we are thrown into suspense filled drama.

If I had not heard it from the author’s own mouth, I would never have guessed this was Avery Flynn’s very first novel. Her writing technique is very reminiscent of Lora Leigh, Lori Foster and Nora Roberts; who are three of my favorite authors.

Ms. Flynn knows exactly how to write a female lead; she knows that they can be vulnerable, yet fierce at the same time. She knows that not all women need an alpha male to solidify her as a person. Claire Layton is a tough as nails, smart-mouthed woman that I would definitely call my friend!!! Jake Warrick is the epitome of an alpha male, yet he knows when he has met his match in a woman.

I loved the ending of this book and can not wait to see what happens next in The Dry Creek Series!

Claire couldn’t cook worth a lick but she had put together a great restaurant and it was the most popular restaurant for several counties. Dry Creek, Nebraska wasn’t a metropolis by any means; and everyone knew everyone else’s business. Her oldest brother was the Chief of Police, middle brother a staid professor and youngest brother had won the lottery awhile back. Claire was at least a foot shorter than the shortest of the brothers, coming in at just arou9nd five feet (without heels).
When she took the trash out after closing one night the last thing she expected to see was a body in her dumpster. Especially a body who had eaten at her place that same evening! Oldest bro wasn’t too thrilled, either. Claire’s week quickly goes from bad to worse as the father of the “body” sends in his own man to be sure things are done right. The killer (now referred to as the Voice of Doom) has been making phone calls to Claire wanting the victim’s cell phone and memory card. What?
The private eye has issues with Claire. Ones that can only be solved somewhere private, preferably with sheets. Once they laid eyes on each other is was only a matter of time. But Claire had been badly hurt before – and so had Jake. Do they have the nerve to try again? Assuming of course, that they live long enough.
Ms. Flynn has done a bang-up job of creating an unusual plot, characters that never say die and an few pretty decent sex scenes thrown in for good measure. I loved it and want MORE!

I have yet to find a avery flynn book that I have found delicious and this is no exception. Claire is stubborn, determined and loves her family fiercely. So much that she puts everything on the line to keep them protected from the killer of the girl in her dumpster. That is until the just as stubborn and headstrong Jake comes into the picture.

Through some fun but dangerous misadventures where Claire acts before she thinks and Jake forgetting he is on a job and not just there to draw Claire into his bed and arms we have a adventurous steamy hot book of intrigue and twists and turns.

Each character is relatable and fun. Especially her brother Chris and her mom. She is a hoot. Her desire to have her kids married with kids and being a busybody you have laughs to help with the seriousness of the mystery and why the flash drive and phone are so important. When it finally comes out its a wow.

Her brother hank and her other brothers with their protectiveness is sweet and Hank being the sheriff adds a new element to it all. Her brashness with his irresistable charm and honesty with his desire to protect her make Claire and Jake one fun sexy couple.

The plot is ever evolving and the twists and turns keep you intrigued as you watch the mystery unfold as these two come together. And when they come together it is truly a sight a toasty sight to boot.

This is the story of Claire and Jake. The danger they faced and the attraction they have.

What I really liked about this book was how realistic it was. While I was reading it, I could totally picture it happening just the way Avery Flynn described. That to me is the mark of good writing.

I really loved how spunky Claire was. I instantly connected with her because of her fire. She was alive, and not afraid to get her hands dirty. I loved how she just jumped right in, no questions asked. Even if it did get her into trouble sometimes.

Because it was a murder who-dun-it with the killer on the loose, there was a good amount of suspense and intrigue. I was trying to solve the case the whole time right there along with Claire. There are also some close call and kind of scary moments. I love creepy moments in murder books. hehe maybe I'm a little weird?

This is a really good book, it sped right along. No dull moments or extra fluff. I really appreciated that. I easily read the book in one sitting. I could totally see how this book would make a great start to a series or a complete standalone. It ended in a good place.

Up a Dry Creek contained some sexual content, so the age rating recommendation is 18+. It was not overdone though, I thought it was a good amount. Not too much, not too little. Up a Dry Creek was a fast paced, believable and throughout enjoyable read.

A nicely balanced blend of suspense, sex, and action. The suspense and action were first-class, and what's there not to like about a handsome, muscular, well-hung hero and a redheaded, big-busted, sharp-tongued heroine?

Only two quibbles and one puzzle about an otherwise thoroughly enjoyable story.

For all the details of the personalities and backgrounds of Claire and Jake, the romantic pair, I was left wanting to know a little more about each of them. Asking too much, perhaps, from a short novel filled with so many sex and actions scenes, but a few glimpses into the protagonists' inner minds would have been well worth the few extra pages.

The sex scenes were great, but here and there the author slipped into cliched phrases, creating dissonance with her otherwise rich and stimulating vocabulary.

The ending of the story sends a clear signal about the way the sequel and other stories in the series are heading. My guess is that Ms Flynn will focus each book on one of the Layton siblings, my least favourite framework for a series.

At least one reader hopes Ms Flynn will pen her future Dry Creek stories around fresh and unrelated citizens of the town.

From the first line, this book had me hooked. Flynn wastes no time in getting straight to the story, opening with a scene in Claire’s restaurant followed directly by the discovery of a dead girl in her dumpster out back.

When Jake was first introduced, I didn’t like him. Because Claire came in so strong and fierce, I immediately identified with her, and when they had their initial exchange I seethed. But as we get to know him, Jake isn’t such a bad guy after all.
Flynn executes this story with grace and ease, and the plot flows nicely. The only beef I had is how frustrated I became waiting for Claire and Jake to consummate their relationship. But, in the end the wait was worth it.

I often read romance novels written in a sappy sweet voice with a happy ever after that no one can really expect to have. But this novel was played out with humor and enough tension to keep you turning the pages, and the ending is plausible. I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and will definitely be reading Flynn’s work again.

Ms. Flynn is a gifted storyteller. Her writing is well-crafted and she certainly knows her way around a sentence. She also masters the ability to heat up the page through evocative sex scenes, provoking the imagination into a vivid enactment of character chemistry and interaction. Although entertaining, I did struggle with some elements of believability and initially became distracted at times with a little too much information. The latter part quickly faded, however, and I became engrossed in the plight of the two main characters. Humor and suspense elements collide and overall, this was a good book. Avery Flynn is a writer to keep an eye on.

Dangerous Kiss (Laytons Book 1) by Avery Flynn
Adult Contemporary Romantic Suspense
Has editing errors.
It was okay. The main characters are interesting but never reach full development. There are a few intriguing areas, but the story in whole lacks complexity.
I am on the fence on this one. It is interesting enough to make me a little curious about book 2, but not enough to make me rush to get it.

Took a chance on a new author and loved this book! It's a treat to find two strong-willed characters who don't spend endless chapters agonizing over how they're independent and could never make room in their lives for someone they love. I also appreciated the way Claire and Jake had family written into the story as sidelines ... Not meddling like so often is the case. This novella was a great mix of romance and passion and just enough suspense to keep the ol' heart racing. Looking forward to her next story!

I read this book straight through and loved it! Claire is an independent woman who's opened her own restaurant. When she finds a dead body in the dumpster, the life she's worked hard to build starts to crumble. Enter Jake the PI and the story really takes off, I found myself chuckling at Claire's reaction. This book had great characters, the hero and heroine are strong willed and their interactions is spot on. There romance is great as are the twists and turns as they work through the murder.
Oh, and Claire's dog Onion will steal your heart.

Sooooo much goodness wrapped up in this book! Not too much sex (and given the books I've been reading lately, the lack of sex every 10 pages made a lovely break), but plenty of sexual tension, suspense and everything else you could ask for.

I can't wait to read more books in this series. I'm just sorry it took me so long to read this one!
