Watch a QuickTime author interview for this book.
New York Times and USA Today bestseller Vicki Lewis Thompson believes love makes the world go around and laughter makes the trip worth taking. The recipient of RWA’s Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award and the author of more than ninety books, Vicki pioneered a new kind of romance hero with Nerd in Shining Armor. Following the success of her nerd stories, Vicki launched a boisterous paranormal series featuring a matchmaking witch and wizard, an ADD dragon named George, and a black cat inspired by her own precocious feline, Eve.
Annie is dreading coming home for her sister’s wedding. Six months ago, she divorced her self-absorbed, high-school-sweetheart husband, and put on thirty pounds. When her sister and soon-to-be brother-in-law moved up the date of the wedding, Annie is now in ’seriously need to lose weight’ mode. Knowing she has to wear a peach monstrosity for a matron-of-honor gown isn’t helping her mood any. With her low self-esteem, Annie returns to Big Knob only to see that, for a small town that doesn’t change, changes have indeed happened in Big Knob.
Jeremy is ecstatic! He can’t wait to see Annie again, still lusting after since high school. Shy and nerdy, he never had the courage to approach her, let alone talk to her, and Annie had been many a vision for his wet dreams growing up. But Jeremy hasn’t changed all that much; he’s still shy and sweet, and he desperately needs help to burst out of his shyness.
In come Dorcas and Ambrose. They know soul mates when they see them, and they’re determined to get the two together. With a small spell, Jeremy seems to burst out of his shell, and much to Annie’s surprise, he’s much cuter than she remembers, and finds him very sweet and thoughtful. Plus, he knows a few magic tricks, which capture his attention.
And while dealing with wedding plans for her sister and his best friend, Annie and Jeremy find they can’t keep their hands off each other, and it becomes anytime, anywhere; from a deserted beach after dusk, his apartment in the middle of the day, in the backseat of her car during the bachelorette party, to that same deserted beach before dusk, to the hammock in the middle of the night.
Meanwhile, Dorcas and Ambrose are still trying to help George earn his gold scales. Dee-Dee, a new monster member of Big Knob, has been there for close to two hundred years. While sightings of her had always been dismissed, the reporter in Annie is determined to get to the bottom of it, whether real or a teenage prank.
And just to add to the excitement, Isadora Mather, the woman captured in bronze in the town square, the widow of the founder of Big Knob, has returned after receiving reports that Dee-Dee was misbehaving. Going by the alias Isabel Moore, had been there, two hundred years ago, when Dee-Dee came to the village. She’d been hiding since them. Isadora’s return couldn’t have been at a worse/better time, depending on how you look at it, and she in no way resembles the statue of herself, except maybe her face. Isadora is outrageous and entirely focused on sex. Definitely not what the town needs right at that moment.
I swear I enjoyed this book more than the first! Annie was just like some women I know who had married over-bearing and self-absorbed men who treated them like crap and, once their self-esteem was buried deep, left them for someone else. Annie is a character that rang very true with me. Jeremy, on the other hand, could have used a little more work. Jeremy had sought help from Dorcas and Ambrose, help to unleash his inner wild self, to finally get the girl. Knowing that he’s now outgoing and knows magic tricks that happen out of thin air, I found he was too quick to dismiss purported monsters in the lake, quick to dismiss what Annie saw, and immediately thought Dorcas and Ambrose were behind it all as a scam to make money. It made no sense how fast he drew to that conclusion and held fast to it.
Otherwise, I thought the story quicky, sassy, sexy, funny, and an overall excellent read!
I am enjoying this lighthearted paranormal series. Annie and Jeremy are the second couple in the series, and they have amazing chemistry. Jeremy has had a crush on Annie since high school, but she never really noticed him. Now Annie is divorced and back in town for her sister's wedding. This is Jeremy's chance to get Annie's attention, but he needs a little help. Fortunately for him, Dorcas and Ambrose are on the case. Both Annie and Jeremy are great characters. They are smart, funny, and kind. I absolutely wanted them to get together in spite of all the obstacles they faced. Annie is at a place in life where she has to decide who she really is. Jeremy knows who he is, but he has to stretch himself to be the most he can be. They are the kind of couple who bring out the best in each other, and I love that. Their dialogue kept me turning pages when I should have been sleeping. We learn a lot more about Dorcas and Ambrose, the witch and wizard, in this book. They have so many things they have to handle all at once, but they do it all with style and humor. We also get to know Gwen, the heroine of the next book. She provided a sounding board and some much needed laughter for Annie. And there are lots of other characters who add color to Big Knob, Indiana. In short, this was a great read. It was funny, romantic, and moving. I am looking forward to Gwen's book!
Annie left her home in Big Knob IN to follow her journalism dreams to Chicago. However, she's back home for her sister's wedding. Annie is unhappy about the weight she's gained since her divorce, and she's not too keen on her matron of honor dress, either. Jeremy has been half in love with Annie since school, but he never had the courage to ask her out. Now that she's back, and available, he longs to approach her. Dorcas and Ambrose are professional match-makers, and they use a bit of magic to boost Jeremy's confidence in hopes he can win Annie over. Annie is flattered by the attention and her own, newfound attraction to Jeremy, but when she learns the unlikely truth, can she be certain she fell in love with the real Jeremy?
This was a cute, lively story filled with magic and humor. Dorcas and Ambrose's main assignment in Big Knob is to rehab the young dragon, George, who lives in the forest, but they can't resist nudging soulmates to one another. There's also a lake monster, named Dee Dee, and it's her presence that both intrigues Annie and makes her question everything. Characterizations were well-done, and the plot was interesting.
I'm not so into paranormal romance as I once was, but this was good enough to earn 4 stars.
Wild & Hexy (Hex, #2) by Vicki Lewis Thompson ..I loved this..and I am loving the series...sometimes a little whimsy to spice things up. Annie Winston(hometown girl back for sister's wedding..want to be a great reporter) Jeremy Dunston( cafe owner..has loved Annie since highschool...best man in the wedding) Then we meet again Dorcas, Ambrose, George and newcomer De De.. The fun never stops so many laughs, angst, mystery, tears and lots of steam. This all leads us to a very HEA. I can't wait for CASUAL HEX, Gwen's story.
Reasons I enjoyed this book: Page-turner Easy-to-read Great world building Wonderful characters Action-packed Steamy Whimsical Romantic Funny Entertaining Happily Ever After
Another fun story from VLT. Also another book that has been sitting in my TBR way too long. Fun story with magical matchmakers Dorcas & Ambrose with a helping hand from the resident lake monster. Former Beauty Queen Annie has hit some life changing bumps in the road. High school geek Jeremy has become a hot geek and just who Annie needs.
Great addition to this never a dull moment series. This couple gets the nudge they need to reconsider their friendliness in a sexy way, lol. This hexy interference also gives this couple the opportunity to be bold and rethink their goals in life. Such a humorous, adventurous, magical and romantic plot with some “tasty” beverages to boot. I received a copy at no cost and without obligation from the author.
Dorcas and Ambrose are back with their unconventional attempts at matchmaking! In Wild & Hexy we're reintroduced to Jeremy, Big Knob's resident computer genius, and we get to meet Annie who was briefly mentioned in the previous book. Jeremy has just opened up his internet cafe and Annie has returned to her home town for his sister's wedding. She was Miss Popular in high school while Jeremy was a total geek, but she's finally willing to give him the time of day. Maybe it's because she thinks he's a magician in training and gives her a story for her column? Meanwhile, Dorcas and Ambrose have another little problem involving a magical creature in town.
I didn't enjoy Wild & Hexy quite as much as Over Hexed for one main reason: Annie. She's been living in Chicago for several years where she's been married, divorced, lost her job, and found 20 extra pounds. Of course she spends quite a bit of time complaining about her weight and starving herself despite many genuine compliments from her mom and Jeremy. Sure her bride's maid dress didn't fit, but that can be fixed. I did not like how she refused food for most of the book and was trying to get skinny and reclaim her high school body. According to everyone, she wasn't even fat, and looked healthier with the added weight. There's nothing wrong with wanting to shed some weight, but Annie was going about it the wrong way and for all of the wrong reasons. It just frustrated me.
I did like Dorcas and Ambrose's plot better in this one though. I thought the addition of the lonely lake monster, Dee Dee, was super fun and cute! She also adds some complications for the quirky witch couple as well as for Annie, who accidentally catches a glimpse of her and now wants to be the one to break the story and skyrocket her career. George the ADD dragon also makes an appearance, and I still didn't really care about him, although he is making progress. We also meet a new witch named Isadora, who is quite a character! I just wish she had had a slightly bigger role, since seems to be a trouble maker.
In the end, Wild & Hexy was another quick and fun read, but I was just annoyed with the heroine. I adored Jeremy and liked seeing him act more confident and taking charge in the relationship. There are of course several sexy scenes, and some of them are quite funny too. However, overall this one didn't have the same level of humor throughout that I've come to expect from this author.
I should start off by saying that I'm a big fan of Vicki Lewis Thompson. I still read her 'Nerd' series, and her hot Harlequins have spiced up many a night for me. When I picked up "Over Hexed", I didn't realize it was the start of a trilogy?, but still really enjoyed it. "Wild & Hexy" is the second in the series. The third "Casual Hex" is scheduled for release in February 2009.
Dorcas and Ambrose are two former magical matchmakers who were banished to Big Knob, Indiana for an unfortunate magical practical joke involving sex organs that went awry. Just their luck, the Grand Wizard's nephew really has no sense of humor! Anyway, they're forbidden from matchmaking and so are spending their time doing 'relationship counseling' in Big Knob. This time they have quite the challenge.
Former Big Knob beauty queen Annie isn't excited about going home for a visit. Since she left with her hometown sweetheart, she's lost the sweetheart, her job, and gained 30 pounds (well, really it's only 20 now). But she's back for her sister's wedding and determined to lose the weight before the wedding even if she has to wear that peach monstrosity. She even has some ideas for her current job, writing some pieces about small town 'stuff'. But as soon as the wedding is over, she's outta Big Knob and back to the Big City!
Jeremy has had wet dreams starring Annie since he was 10. But being the shy, quiet type, he always knew he didn't really have a chance with her. He's not sure what's going on, but since he spent the evening with Dorcas and Ambrose he can now do magic! And he feels strangely self-confident, and in-charge, and by golly he WILL ask Annie out, and maybe a little more?
Between magical matchmakers on the lam, a rebellious teenage dragon in the woods, a lonely sea monster in the lake, and a wedding...keeping up with these two will have you laughing and snorting your way to the end of the book. I can't wait for the next one!!
Vicki Lewis Thompson has done it again. I loved this book. I love that she brought back the nerdy character that made me pick her books up in the first place.
Jeremy is a wonderful character who is both nerdy in a way and also very sexy too. He is so charming and shy, you can't help but love him. Then he gains some confidence, mostly due to a bit of magic, and is able to talk and romance the woman that he has been in love with since high school. Isn't that sweet?
Annie is also an interesting character. She starts off reminding me of that one girl in high school that you love to hate because everything came so easily to her, she dated the high school hunk and then married him, and she got the title of Dairy Queen that all the girls wished they could have. Now she's fallen on harder times and you want to be happy for that, but you can't with Annie because she really is a nice girl. You would assume that Annie would be meaner or have something from her past that she wants to apologize for, but she really is a nice girl that everyone can like very easily.
She hates small town life, Jeremy loves it. She can't wait to leave Big Knob, and he wants her to stay. They know that they only have one week together and they do their best to make it hot and steamy. Does true love weasel it's way into what is supposed to be a no strings attached relationship?
We also can't forget about the side story going on about Dee Dee, the lake creature, and how her loneliness is causing the resident magical folk to struggle to find an answer. Does Dee Dee every find true love?
The matchmaking (more like mischief making) antics of Dorcas and Ambrose continue in this second installment of the Hexed series. Once again, magic is needed to give human amours a push, including the Lowells’s special potion-enhanced wine and a Loch Ness-like plesiosaur dwelling in the local lake.
It’s a little too predictable that their interference will cause a traveling beauty to see the local nerd as being special or that she’ll tumble into bed with him on the first date. Surely modern women are made of sterner stuff, magic or no. It’s a little irritating to see a grown woman getting bowled over by parlor tricks, even if the magic appears inexplicable to ordinary viewers.
But at least this lady doesn’t simply throw it all up to nestle down in small-town bliss with her new hubby. That’s often a staple of the romantic genre—the big-city gal who kicks over her cosmopolitan life to go down home with the contented rural lad. Are big cities so gray, lifeless and soul destroying as all that? Aren’t they perhaps vibrant, exciting, eye opening and filled with thrilling things to do after the sun goes down? How many people are really so keen to settle in a town where the carpets roll up after six and the most exciting things to see during the day are a free-standing phallic rockpile and the boring statue of the wife of the town’s founder?
However, this novel avoids that trite ending to give us a lady who will travel the world seeking out exotic wonders. In all likelihood that means she won’t be making an appearance in the sequel but points must be given for that bit of originality.
4 Stars: More magical adventures in Big Knob with a cast you can't help but cheer for. A super fun read filled with plenty of laughs to keep you reading.
Among some of my favorites. Outstanding literary work. The characters are well developed, interesting. The liked characters are likable and the hated are unlikable. The writing is captivating enough to keep you interested until the end and leave you wanting more. It has a fairly original or uniquely well-developed plot. The pretense and romance was well balanced and done with properly distributed amounts of hints, behaviors and chemistry. Not so much predictable if at all. Overall, loved it, I recommend reading!! More magical adventures in Big Knob with a cast you can't help but cheer for. A super fun read filled with plenty of laughs to keep you reading.
Geeky Jeremy has had a crush on Annie Winston since high school, when Annie ruled as Dairy Queen. Now years later, Annie arrives back in Big Knob divorced and twenty pounds heavier, and Jeremy wants to make his move. Matchmaking witches Dorcas and Ambrose decide to help Jeremy land Annie, by infusing him with magic and confidence, and enlisting the aid of a certain lake monster.
This was another book where I just wanted to scream at the heroine about how foolish she is being. I enjoyed the matchmaking and the situations that Dorcas and Ambrose find themselves in, and I really like Jeremy. I just couldn't understand why Annie was so dense.
This is a light paranormal romance with excellent chemistry between the hero (computer geek Jeremy) and heroine (former beauty queen Annie). It gets downright steamy for a happily-ever-after vanilla romance. The only part I didn't like was Annie's self-flagulation over leading Jeremy on - because she wasn't looking for marriage, just a good time. I didn't buy that coming from a woman. The paranormal aspect has to do with the town matchmakers, who are witches, and a loch-ness type monster (who is friendly). This is a sequel, and much better than the debut novel of this series. Brownie points for the author: the sex is exclusively safe sex, and real names are used for body parts.
2nd book about the matchmaking magic in Big Knob Indiana. Jeremy, a computer geek, meets up with Annie, the former prom queen he has always loved. With a little help from Dorcas and Ambrose (the witches from Overhexed) they have a second chance to connect.
This book was funny and well written. I enjoy most of Thompson's writing but this series is really entertaining. I genuinely liked the characters and rooted for them to come together. I am looking forward to Casual Hex, the next book in the series.
This one was so much better than the last. Jeremy, the town geek, always has had a crush on Annie, the town beauty queen. As Annie returns to town for her sisters wedding and her divorce, months before, Jeremy decides to take a chance. Along with some help from Dorcas and Ambrose Jeremy and Annie end up together, and just as you can't eat one chip, neither can they stop having sex after one time, which leads to lots of fun that includes a loch ness monster, flowers that have penis's, a crazy old time witch, and lots else.
Annie returning home to attend her sister's wedding and encounters two things she never expected - she's suddenly attracted to the class nerd from high school (who has had a crush on her for years) and the town is inhabited by match-making magicians that all serve as caretakers for a lake monster and dragon.
A funny and fast fantasy read from the always enjoyable Thompson. This one rates a 4.5 out of 5 on the chili pepper steaminess scale of love.
I liked the first book in this series better...mostly because they were both so much alike. Girl comes from the big city, meets small-town boy, they fall in love with the help of Dorcas and Ambrose, and girl needs to decide if she can live in small town or not. About the only difference was that Annie grew up in Big Knob. If they wouldn't have been so similliar I probably would have liked it more. I did enjoy the further details about Dee-Dee and Goerge though.
Another entertaining book in this charming and humourous fantasy series. Love the characters - the dragon with the attitude issues, the poker playing cheating raccoons, the lonely lake monsters, a scooter riding warlock, and main characters who'd make great friends in real life. Perfect for those times when you need a book that leaves a smile on your face as you finish it. A really enjoyable story.
This is book 2 in the Hex series, of which I never read book 1. I've enjoyed her short stories in various anthologies that I've read so I when I came across this one I thought I'd give it a try. Ugh! This book is almost painfully bad. Nina Bangs does the supernatural matchmaker thing so much better (nobody's better than Sparkle Stardust). I won't be bothering with the third book in the trilogy.
I have not read the first book in the Hex Series but I didn't think it made a difference. Wild and Hexy is a great stand alone book. It had my smiling and laughing throughout the book. I can't wait to read the other books in this series.
Another cute book in the Hex Series by Vicki Lewis Thompson. I liked book number one a little better than this one, but it was still good. Can't wait for book three to come out in February. Gwen's story should be fun!
Cute and light series. I like it. Dorcas and Ambrose are very loving characters and the poor town is so unsuspecting of what exactly these two are up to. I really like George the forest guardian...he reminds me of a few people I've know.
This is the second book in the series. This book is a light, fun read with the same trademark blend of comedy and romance. Thompson hasn't disappointed me yet. If you enjoyed her "Nerd" series, you'll enjoy this.
love love love this series...this is book #2 and it was just as fun if not more than book #1...there are only 3 books in this series but I am hoping for more! If you like your romance very steamy and a little fun/supernatural with some LOL humor, this is a series for you!
Magical match-makers add even more complications on the road to romance. And then there's the dragon. What's a nice resident of Big Knob, Indiana to do?
Another light and fun series from Vicki Lewis Thompson.
I am having such fun with this series! Second book finished and enjoyed it as much as the first. Characters are very lovable and the magical parts of the book just take you away....gonna start book 3 right away. Continue to recommend to anyone who loves fantasy, magic, and romance!
