First off, thank you to Evie J Marlowe for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC, I really liked reading 'Kneaded Together'. The grumpy dude/single mother trope worked really well for Hazel and Silas because they absolutely could not be more different when they first meet. Hazel is friendly, talkative, and trying to rebuild her life after leaving Ryan, while Silas basically wants everyone to leave him alone after a fire ended his career as a firefighter. And then Lily comes along and immediately decides Silas is her new best friend whether he likes it or not, so that was insanely adorable.
I really liked Hazel too. She’s a single mum, runs her own baking business, and is trying to figure out who she is now that she’s finally away from Ryan. I liked seeing her slowly get more confident and actually start standing up for herself instead of constantly apologizing and trying to keep everyone happy. The scene with Yvette was probably one of my favorites because Hazel finally had enough, and Silas was right there backing her up. Like girl, you picked a good one right there.
Silas was definitely my favorite though. He is SO GRUMPY at the beginning, but once you get more of his backstory, it makes so much sense. He’s dealing with survivor’s guilt and a lot of trauma from the fire, and I liked that Hazel didn’t just magically fix everything for him. Their relationship is really slow (unlike some other books where they instantly fall in love and get married with kids within the first 30%), and you actually get to see him gradually become more comfortable around her and start letting people back into his life.
The romance was probably my favorite part because it’s mostly little things at first. Hazel bringing him food, Lily leaving him drawings, Silas finding excuses to be around them... and then suddenly they’re spending all this time together and you’re just waiting for them to admit what’s happening. Even their first kiss feels like a big deal because of everything Silas has been dealing with.
And Lily... She was honestly such a good addition to the story. She basically adopts Silas against his will, and he is a GROWN MAN. And alongside all of that, she somehow gets him to actually care about having people around him again. She did more work with him in a short amount of time than a therapist could have done with him in years considering his issues. I also really liked seeing his relationship with her and everything going on with his niece, Izzy.
Anyway, 4-star read, just because I feel like that it was a little slow and hard to follow at the beginning, but it does pick up afterwards. Overall, this was just a really wholesome slow-burn romance with some heavier stuff mixed in. Hazel and Silas both have their own issues to work through, but neither of them magically gets “fixed” because they fall in love, which I really liked, like I said like 2 times before. Also, there were a lot of opposite elements between them, but they did share some similarities, which was good, and I ATE THAT UP. Really good book.

Awww, this story has some of my FAVORITE tropes! 🩷 And it’s such a soft romance, full of all the things that make life feel like LIFE.
Grumpy/sunshine? ✔️
Firefighter? ✔️
Single mom? ✔️
Traumatic pasts? ✔️
Slow burn? ✔️
Emotional support dog? ✔️✔️✔️
Silas and Hazel BOTH need hugs. These two have been through it, and you can really feel how much their pasts affect the way they approach starting something new. There’s a lot of hesitation, vulnerability, and emotional baggage here, which made the slow burn work so well for me.
And then there’s Lily. 🥹 She is absolute sunshine in the form of a 9-year-old. I loved her so much. The emotional stakes are already high with Hazel trying to protect her daughter, but the bullying storyline definitely added another layer.
And listen…if you are judging a NINE-YEAR-OLD because one parent stayed and not because of the parent who actually left, I would really like to introduce you to the concept of logic because you clearly missed some lessons. 😒😂
The café confrontation had me KICKING MY FEET and cheering. I love when a scene gives me that kind of satisfaction!
I also really enjoyed getting little glimpses of the other characters around town. The author is planning for this to become a series, and I can definitely see the potential for this world to grow. We mostly stayed focused on Silas and Hazel in this one, but I have a feeling we’ll get to know more of the surrounding characters as the series continues, and I’m here for it.
And that ENDING. 🥹😭 I was wiping away tears. My emotions were emoting.
This was such an easy, bingable read, and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what the author comes out with next!
