This book is a reprint of the most extensive anthology of this noted Carmelite poet, which she approved five weeks before her death. Includes introduction by Bishop Morneau, chronology, bibliography, and 3 photos. Jessica Powers (1905-1988), a Discalced Carmelite nun and member of the Carmel of the Mother of God, Pewaukee, Wisconsin, has been hailed as one of America's greatest religious poets. She approved this anthology, the most extensive collection of her poems, only five weeks before her death. This book includes an introduction by Bishop Robert Morneau, over 180 poems, a chronology, a bibliography, and several photos.
One thing that bothers me about so many Christian poets is they get wrapped up in psalmist imagery, which is great in the Psalms, but I find too archaic for modern poetry. Powers is certainly guilty of it but she kept a voice all her own while mining scripture.
Poetry is often a challenge for me-- and not all of her poems are equally wonderful but one or two really "blow me away." She can be surprising and delightful.
Jessica Powers has been a favorite of mine since my early years. I'm so happy to have this collection of her poetry to read whenever my soul needs lifting.
