Selene Astrea has spent five centuries hiding the darkest part of herself. Born with the forbidden power of umbra she lives in a world that worships the light and executes those touched by the shadows. While her twin sister is destined to inherit their court, Selene is expected to smile, stay silent, and bury the nightmares that plague her.
Except, her dreams are not dreams at all. They are visions of blood soaked ballrooms, fallen kingdoms, and an ancient King who knows her name when she has never met him.
When a mysterious noble from the Eventide Court crosses her path, something inside Selene awakens. The shadows whisper. Her heart recognizes him. And a dangerous bond neither of them understands begins to unravel secrets that should have remained buried.
For centuries, those unseen have watched from the shadows, biding their time until the forgotten daughter of death became vulnerable enough to claim. With Selene suddenly poised to become heir of the Arcane Court, they finally make their move. Hunted for a gift the world fears, Selene must decide whether to become the weapons her enemies believe her to be, or the queen who will bring the kingdom to their knees.
In a world where prophecy can lie, love can destroy, and the gods never forget their chosen, one truth remains. Some love stories begin with a kiss. This one begins with death.
Where to start. First off, I did enjoy the story. There were a few things that I would have changed. I didn't realize that the main characters of this book were fae until 30% in. The world building was very minimal. You get minimal details regarding the courts and their purpose and how many courts there are. There were a lot of grammatical errors which usually don't bother me. With this book, I had to keep going back and making sure I read the correct thing because a word was misspelled or a comma was missed that changed the entire sentence. A lot of things were repetitive. Caedos seemed so useless in the book.
