A post apocalyptic, alien invasion romance set in Australia? Sign me the hell up.

A freaking bomb, post apocalyptic, alien invasion romance set in Australia? YASSSSSS GURL

I love me some ridiculous romance, and this just hit the spot. It was filled with alpha males and strong woman, who made the best of the situation and kicked ass doing it. The story was addicting, action packed, and super easy to fall into. There was no information dumps or confusion with the influx of unknown characters and alien species, it was seamlessly written into the story.

I think I've discovered my new guilty pleasure series and author, I think you're going to see me devouring these over the next couple months.

Good start to the series. Pretty unique world. I appreciated the creativity.
For a shorter story I thought it was a pretty well done. I cannot say I LOVE it but I am committed enough to jump into the next book

Ok so I admit that most of the sci fi romance I read tends to feature hunky aliens but this author has taken two humans as her lead characters and given her readers quite a creditable story with a hero who is both protective and totally badass! In a world that has been invaded by aliens that sort of resemble prehistoric creatures but are completely lucid and aware of their brutality we meet the survivors fighting to reclaim their land. Hardly any of humanity survived the initial attacks but those who do band together to destroy their enemy and take back their planet. At a secret military base Hell Squad is one of the teams that regularly put themselves in the firing line. Their leader is Marcus, hardened by war, loyal to a fault and totally smitten by former party girl turned communications specialist Elle. Marcus doesn't see how he could ever be worthy of her and tries to hide his feelings but as the war hots up Elle will be integral to defeating the monsters that now roam the Earth.
This is the first book in this series but there's enough information to make it flow very well. Yes we have vicious blood thirsty aliens but the author pits them against the best that humanity can offer. Step forward the courageous men and women working at Blue Mountain military base . It was fun reading how the tough Marcus felt about Elle and at times his thoughts and words were almost poetical which made me smile. Yes he definitely has the woman up on a pedestal but there's a lot more to Elle than just her looks. Elle is braver than Marcus realises, far more stubborn too and a genuine caring person who feels as strongly about him as he does her! Luckily a mission throws them together and when sparks ignite boy does that pair start a fire! Yes well written sexy scenes appear but they are sensual and just felt integral to this story. I really enjoyed the believable dialogue and loved the teasing and banter amongst Hell Squad. Romance action and well written what more do you need?
I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review

Marcus is book one in the Hell Squad series by Anna Hackett.

This was a great start to the series. I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy this title, because I’m not a big fan of the post-apocalypse world, but I soon found myself engaged and entertained.

The world was invaded by dinosaur-like Aliens and not the friendly type. These aliens almost killed off humanity and now what is left are banding together and trying to find a way to end the invaders. It’s war. Humanity’s last chance.

Marcus is the leader of Hell Squad. He’s ruff, tough, and scared on the inside and out.

Ellie was a society girl. She was sheltered, sweet, and innocent until the invasion. Now she’s running communications for Hell Squad.

I liked the introduction to everyone on Hell Squad. Hell Squad is a crazy bunch of people. They take on the most extreme missions. All are hardened warriors/soldiers. I liked the believable dialogue and loved the teasing and banter amongst Hell Squad.

Ellie and Marcus dance around each other, but after a mission that she goes on with Hell Squad, Marcus took action. I liked that we got both Ellie and Marcus’s POV’s. It was fun reading the tough Marcus and seeing his feelings about Ellie. At times his thoughts and words were almost poetic. I also enjoyed the sex scenes. They were well written, placed well, and added to the story.

I also liked that we got some chapters in Gabe’s POV to help us see into him and get ready for his book.

Hackett is a wonderful writer and storyteller. Her characters and world are believable and make me just fall in the story from beginning to end. I can’t wait to read on.

5 "Let's go to hell " -stars!!

It is very rare I come across an action romance that actually delivers! It was fast paced, well put together, and I enjoyed the characters as well as the writing.

So what happens? The world has ended. Aliens have invaded earth and we follow survivors from the attack. More precisely Elle and Marcus.

Elle is absolutely likeable. Sweet and stubborn .

Marcus, total alpha male, leader of the Hell Squad and just amazing!

Normally when I read any "alien"- type of book, the female lead always get the alien. This one, not so much and it was just so good! Humans finding love and a purpose in the middle of the end of the world, it just hid a soft spot for me.

Will I recommend: Yes!!! Was it the best I have ever read? No, but it just did it for me. 5 stars simply because of that.

Best part? It was FREE! So grab a copy! And because I can't get enough of these characters, I just ordered the book on Amazon. The second book too because I HAVE to know Cruz's story!! #supporttheauthor

I haven’t read much in the way of apocalyptic romance, but this author set this one up so well that I feel like adding this trope to my must-read list.

The world has been overtaken by an alien invasion and the few human survivors left are waging a war to get the planet back. The Earth has been ravaged and aside from a few bases around the world, nowhere is safe.

The elite force of Hell Squad has been kicking ass and taking names. As the team leader, Marcus seems to have the entire world on his shoulders. I really liked this character. He knows loss and he knows pain. He also knows want and need. Battle-scarred and battle-weary, he doesn’t think he’s good enough for Elle. But when he learns that he’s the only man she sees, he has to start seeing things her way.

I liked Elle. She was a selfish and superficial party girl before the invasion. Now she is the best communications officer on the base. She provides reliable intel and is one of the few people who can translate the alien language for recon. She’s also consumed by her want and need of Marcus, but feels he’s out of her league. When he lets her in, she’s all in.

This is the first book in Anna Hackett’s action packed Hell Squad series. In Marcus we are introduced to a brand new Earth, where aliens have invaded and humans are barely surviving. But humanity still has some fight left and a rebel force has formed. Hell Squad is one of the teams that go out on missions to destroy the enemy and save as many survivors as they can. Each member of the team fight their own demons as well as the dinosaur like aliens who are trying to destroy Earth.

Marcus is Hell Squad’s leader, he’s a scarred and battle hardened. Completely wrong for former socialite turned comms officer Elle. Elle know's she doesn't deserve Marcus. He's a brave warrior who fights for humanity. She's a former party girl trying to make up for her previously shallow life by being the best comms officer she can.

When you want an action packed read that still has a sexy as hell romance in it, Anna Hackett is your woman. With Marcus the first in the Hell Squad series she introduces us to a post apocalyptic world where aliens have invaded and almost won. Hell Squad are part of the operation trying to take the world pack. This means that's plenty of opportunity for some fast paced adventure and sexy romance.

Marcus is the scarred up leader of the Hell Squad and the first to take the plunge into love with the very sweet Elle. They both were clearly in love with one another and  just needed to take that final step and do something about it. Despite all the gorey alien action this actually turned into a really cute romance. Marcus and Elle were great together and had smoking hot chemistry in the bedroom.

I can't wait to get started on reading about the other members of the Hell Squad and will be diving head first into this series.

This book caught me off guard and I was here for it. Read it in one sitting and not once for a second put it down.
The plot was thrilling with a lot of alien action and fighting. It was fast paced and nothing for weak nerves.
Elle and Marcus had great tension and I fell in love with them. Marcus is so protective of Elle and she is so kind and sweet. Gosh. I loved how supportive the Squad was and how they shipped this adorable couple as well.
This book was a wild ride considering the multiple fight scenes but I enjoyed it. We got to meet a lot of well build side characters and I can‘t wait to read more in this universe.
Still it was a little short and the love story happened real quick, but that was not big of a problem.

Spoilers

A new take on the end of civilization as we know it. Aliens have invaded, weird raptor/humanoid aliens.Survivors have come together and battle against these intelligent creatures for their very survival. Marcus is hell squad's leader and Elle is their comm specialist, the attraction was simmering between them until she was in danger then Marcus showed his alpha male side and they start something that has been brewing since they first saw each other. Minor pushing away by Marcus as he thinks Elle deserves better. My biggest issue was that she thought he slept with Liberty but she didn't ask him. That was just one niggling point straight until the end of the book lol. All in all a quick and interesting read by a new to me author.

I realize that romance mixed with aliens in a post apocalyptic world isn't everyone's flavor of literature. But, this type of story happens to be one of my very guilty pleasures... Sssshhhh, don't tell;)

So, of course, if aliens and a dystopian/ post apocalyptic type world isn't your thing, then you aren't going to like the book and it's best to just move on along.

If you do dig it, then this book has a decent storyline with lots of action, a nice little romance, some interesting characters for future installments, fair world building, a high speed pace, and a wham-bam writing style that packs a serious punch.

It's kind of a smorgasbord of "Starship Troopers," "Jurassic Park," "War of The Worlds," & "Terminator" meets a sci fi version of "Mission Impossible" and "Indiana Jones" type action. It's wild and tightly packed into less than 150 pages.

The Writing

While I really like the author's pace and nuts and bolts writing style that omits any and all irrelevant fluff, I'd say the author's weakest point is her tone, especially in the narrative.

^ It's a little stiff in tone of voice. I think this problem stems from NOT having this be a first person narrative where the character is addressing the reader with his or her own thoughts vs having a third person narration of the thoughts, feelings, and musings.

It would've been a much smoother ride and easier to connect with the characters, especially given this is such a short book with tons of characters, had the author done a dual first person POV between Marcus and Ellianna.

Characters

I liked the characters. It just took me a long time to emotionally connect with them because of how they were written in voice. The reader to character connection was purely through respect of their actions vs that multidimensional feature of connecting with characters through their thoughts, dialogue, and
physical actions. Again, it needed first person narration. I've never liked when a third party narrator tell me what a character(s) is thinking and feeling vs giving each a unique voice of their own to tell me themselves!

Marcus is that sexy badass mfer that you'd want beside you, under you, and atop you during an alien invasion! Nuff said~

Ellia was a sheltered chick that survived somehow & now realizes that mall trips and BMWs aren't the epitome of life. She's a little slow naive when it comes to sexuality... 'no, he couldn't like me like that' ... kinda Bambi between headlights chick when it comes to men.

However, I LOVE that she's brave, otherwise intelligent, & is neither a constantly yelping damsel in distress nor a socialite turned Rambo. It's true to form of what would happen if you take a pampered princess with underlying grit, intelligence, and determination and place her in the apocalypse. I love real characters! She's brave enough to risk her life to help, but isn't so unreal as to not admit that she's f'ing nervous about going up against a bunch of alien supermen.

The Plot

There's a little disconnect here on the time frame. A timeline and current time is never given. There are a lot of techy futuristic elements that infer years into the future, but I'd have liked a little bit more detail on when the alien invasion happened & present time?!? A prologue, perhaps, is needed to give detail to the invasion and solidify a timeline of events.

Otherwise, the storyline itself is pretty unique to the genre. The aliens are unique. Think Jurassic Park meets Terminator.

There's a motley crew of alpha, military badasses from all different backgrounds and countries fighting to save humanity.

"It's always darkest before dawn, sweetheart. But even the longest night always ends." "For now, we just have to find whatever light we can, hold on to it, and use it to guide us until the sun comes up."

So they fight on to book two! ... Where I'm headed now:)

Rating

For creativity & no-fluff flow, this one is a solid four in this genre of para romantic action. I'm deducting a star because of my issues with the narration, which impacted character likability and my own enjoyment of the storyline. = 3 stars

For a novel that's only 148 pages, this one packs a punch, and sexy alpha-male soldiers. The author does a terrific job of weaving a sci-fi thriller full of action and romance. Talk about intriguing characters, the protagonists and supporting characters that make the story come alive. I loved them all, especially the protagonists. Marcus and Elle have been denying their feelings for one another. However, when they finally kiss their passion explodes. Though not descriptive, the sexcapades are still steamy. A big thank you to the author for not adding in any (ridiculous) "angst," something I wish more authors would consider. I highly recommend this novel especially if you're into sci-fi romance with hunky soldiers and strong females. I just wish it was a little longer. No matter, I look forward to reading the next installment, "Cruz."

This was an ok sci-fi read. Here's my breakdown:

Pros:
* Offered as a freebie on Amazon
* No angst or unnecessary drama
* I liked the hero - he wasn’t a manwhore and was smitten and protective of the heroine

Cons:
* I wanted a little more with the aliens - the encounters involving them was limited (they were the villains in this read, not the romantic interest etc.)
* It was overly predictable and very cliché

Overall, I doubt this will be a series I personally continue. I like sci-fi alien reads but this felt more like an apocalypse read than anything.

Good start

Well I wasn't sure how I was going to like this book but I really enjoyed how two total opposites attracted. Marcus is a kick-ass alpha male where Elle is or was the timid previous party girl who didn't see herself worthy but since the invasion. There has been so much change in both characters and can't wait to read about Cruz and his mysterious Santha.

Series: Hell Squad #1
Rating: 5 stars - I loved it!

In the aftermath of a deadly alien invasion, a group of survivors fight to win the planet back. Elle Milton, once a socialite, has made a new role for herself as communications officer for toughest teams fighting for survival - Hell Squad. Marcus Steele is a protector. He fights to give the human race a chance to survive, which includes Elle, the one woman who he can’t stop thinking about.

“When you’re with someone, you’re supposed to lean on them. Share how you feel. In the good times and the bad.”

I loved Elle and Marcus. Elle was a socialite who conformed to her family’s expectations instead of being herself. Now she has a chance to save lives and be a better person. I love how strong she is even though she is terrified. She puts her life on the line to fight with Hell Squad and take down the aliens' communication tower. She is beautiful, sweet, but tough as steel.

“You’re a protector, Marcus. Anyone—man, woman or child—knows that the instant they see you.”

Marus is a protective alpha male. He is scared on the inside and out. He fights his attraction to Elle for months but he can’t ignore it after their mission together. He is such a badass but can also be very caring and kind, especially to Elle. Whenever Elle doubted herself, Marcus was there to remind her of what she has achieved and that everyone changes. That we can’t hold on to the past, just grow from it.

“We can’t erase the past, and frankly, you shouldn’t want to. It’s brought you to this point. It helped make you who you are today.”

Marcus and Elle were everything I want in a hero and heroine. I adored them and couldn't get enough of their story. The other members of Hell Squad were fascinating and unique as well. I cannot wait to dive back into their stories and watch them fall in love again.

“You’re mine now. I’m not letting you go.” “Good, because I’m going to hold on to you too. Whatever happens, whatever we come up against.”

Hackett does an amazing job with creating unique and fascinating worlds that you get absorbed into and don't want to leave. The aliens were so unique, creepy, and deadly that they will stick with you. I cannot get enough of this series, which is why I have read it so many times, and I cannot wait to read the rest.

“For now, we just have to find whatever light we can, hold on to it, and use it to guide us until the sun comes up.”

Trigger warnings: death of parents discussed; grief; survivors guilt; PTSD; violent death of children recounted;

*Ouch* Another reviewer actually sums it up: it was overly predictable and very cliche. The only thing missing in the saint-hero protagonist's room was a corner with rescued puppies. And the kittens to go with in the heroine's room.
He is the selfless, unbeatable, super athletic and handsome (of course) soldier who saves the world (it actually says something like that in the first "hot" scene). She is the spoiled party girl turned kick-ass comm officer (in less than a year) and she so deserves someone better than him (who might that be?). Luckily this is not played out with these page-long "I want but I should not" lamentations, which earned this book a star in my review.
As for predictability: I am sure I know after reading less than the first half of the book who will be romancing with whom in the following books of the series. Feel free to test me.

I like the setting, the story idea, the writing is actually not bad either. If it would just have a little bit more character development with much (!) less cliche. Maybe some average people living in this world? Everybody is good looking or at least super athletic, and everybody likes each other. And maybe overwork the hot scenes a little bit? The dialog from the book: "I am so empty! Fill me up!" almost killed me, I was laughing so hard. Unfortunately I don't think this was a place in the book that was meant to be funny ...

It is what it is - a very light read with no bottom. If you read only for the romance/hot part - go ahead. If you like a story with it without too many *aaaargh* moments - not so much.

Look, I'm not generally one for straight up romance, it's just... not for me. But then I found myself 5 hours into a 10 hour flight having just finished one book and the cabin lights were still dimmed and this little eBook was sitting there on my Kindle... And, well, it turns out even an apocalyptic post alien invasion setting isn't enough to make romance a thing for me. Apparently I need characters to have a least half a personality and the plot to be even a little bit complex. Honestly I would have DNF this if I hadn't been stuck in a metal tube thousands of feet above the pacific (yes I had other books on my kindle and yes, I had downloaded it before the flight but shhh), but it entertained me for a few hours and I got a giggle about the action being set in Sydney airport while en route there. But no, this was not my kind read, and unless I find myself on a long haul flight again in the near future (credit card says no...) I doubt I'll be meeting the Hell Squad again.

I'm so glad I gave this series and new-to-me author a shot; I'm very impressed.

Elle has worked hard to become an asset to team hell-squad. Her dedication and smarts really pays off. Now if she can only catch Marcus' eye.

Marcus is a soldier down to the core. He wants to protect people and destroy the raptor threat. Too bad he doesn't think he's good enough for Elle.

4 stars.

This is the sort of story I enjoyed at the moment. Equal amount of action and romance with a hard as nails hero and a vulnerable, yet brave heroine.

I was also surprised by the setting, based in a post-alien invaded Sydney, of what used to be the shiny Capital of the United Coalition. Now, desolated and destroyed. Made me sad when the Hell Squad battled reptilian aliens in familiar-sounding places and streets around an apocalyptic Sydney.

Just a couple of off-notes for me:
1. The constant switching between a male and female narrator is disconcerting. Since it's not written in 1st POV, I don't think it's really necessary. Probably would work better if they split the male / female dialogues rather than having the male doing female voices and then the female doing the male voices in the alternating chapters. Looses the continuity of the MC's voices.
2. There were a couple of intense romantic scenes in the middle of some heavy firefights that's just too improbable.

But all in all, I'm looking forward to more alien ass-kicking........

I mean.. I don't know what I've expected... Probably something more than what I've got. It's a nice read to push time, but don't expect to grow with this book.
This actually angers me. There are so many just like this one. This story is not one of a kind, most romance novels aren't. But what angers me the most is that the author didn't even try to make it one of a kind. It's like baking a pie from the bag of flour mix, that has all the ingredients already in it and all you need to do is add some water, mix it and bake it. Gah..

DARKEST BEFORE THE DAWN !!!
Title: Marcus
Series: Hell Squad
Designation: Book One, Sci-Fi Alien Invasion Romance
Author: Anna Hackett
My Rating: FIVE HEART-POUNDING STARS *****
Wow! This is my first time reading Hackett's work and I must say, I'm impressed! How in the world have I not heard about Anna Hackett before now??? I don't know but I'm so glad that I finally found her and the Hell Squad Series. I adore romance, I'm addicted to adventure and I love science fiction but it's just so darn hard to find a great combination of all three - until now! Anna Hackett's heart-pounding new Hell Squad Series has given me all three neatly wrapped in one fabulous package! Marcus, the first book of the series, has it all - action, adventure, thrills, chills, vicious aliens, handsome heroes, sexy heroines, sweet romance and steamy sex! Yep, it definitely has it all! Each book is a standalone novella with primarily the same characters but features a different couple in each story and is written in the third person with alternating points of view from the two main characters. The dialogue is smart, gripping, exceptionally well written and flows effortlessly. The characters are simply magnificent! They are fascinating, captivating, intriguing, engaging, endearing and sexy as sin! What did I love about this book? Everything!!!

Earth has been attacked by a reptilian alien race, the Gizzida, and the survivors are struggling to fight back and regain control of the planet. Much of earth's population has been destroyed but a few have survived and are desperately seeking a way to defeat the enemy and drive them from the planet. Members of various divisions of the military have banded together and are now fighting together alongside brave civilians working from Blue Mountain Base, a secret underground military installation just outside Sydney, Australia. And the meanest, most vicious and most skilled unit of them all is Hell Squad led by Marine Staff Sergeant Marcus Steele. Begin the thrilling adventure with Marcus and his team of rough rebels as they attempt to destroy an alien communication array aided by former civilian and party girl Elle Milton, now a comm specialist for Hell Squad. Marcus wants Elle; Elle wants Marcus but - well, you know, personal baggage, past history, self doubt and of course, aliens get in the way. Oh my! Sparks fly! Desire burns! Passion flares! Love ignites! And we have lift off! I have to say, this is one of the most realistically written science fiction novels I've ever read! I can hardly wait to read the next book in the series! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

Earth has been invaded by reptilian dinosaur aliens who are systematically killing off humans as they rob our planet of all natural resources. Earth's last and only hope lies with small rebel cells who have mounted an offensive, hoping to drive them off the planet before all of humanity is lost.

One such cell is Squad Six, aka Hell Squad, who's mantra Hell Squad, ready to go to hell? Hell yeah, the devil needs an ass-kicking serves as a battle cry for this elite team of soldiers.

Elle Milton, the squad's comms officer, is charged to locate a key raptor comms hub the rebel forces need to find in order to turn the tide. Once a top tier member of Sydney's high society, Elle has found purpose in being a part of the rebel forces though she'd like to be more to the team's leader Marcus Steele. If only he'd see her as more than just another female to be protected.

Regardless, if Elle doesn't locate the alien stronghold, it's just a matter of time before the aliens find them.

I'm loving the current reading challenge I'm in as I'm finding new to me authors to add to my collection.

This series Hell Squad premises that a race of reptilian dinosaur aliens have invaded our planet with the intent to kill off humanity and reap our natural resources. A sort of Jurassic Park wanna be scenario if they had evolved into intelligent technological savy individuals. And yes, in this series the aliens are the bad guys.

Enter Hell Squad. Our saviors. For the most part this book reads as an action-adventure thriller that includes a romance between our main characters. And yes, there are adult content scenes, but they play a very minor role in the overall story. For the most part the author focused on world building and series launching pad to set the scene. We get to meet the team and get hints of future match ups but unfortunately also get up close up and personal with canids (think raptors from Jurassic Park), rex (T-Rex), and hellions (you don't wanna know).

This was a promising first in series installment that pulls in my love for SFR and action packed shoot 'em up rebel forces saving Earth. And for once, I DON'T want the aliens to win.
