Alice Ross used to work in the financial services industry where she wrote riveting, enthralling brochures about pensions and ISAs that everyone read avidly and no one ever put straight into the bin.

One day, when nobody was looking, she managed to escape. Dragging her personal chef (aka her husband) along with her, she headed to Spain, where she began writing witty, sexy, romps designed to amuse slightly more than pension brochures.

Missing Blighty (including the weather - but don't tell anyone), she returned five years later.

When not writing, she can be found scratching a tune on her violin, sweating on a spin bike, or upside down in a yoga pose.

Bah.,

If you want to read a book about terrible people and the decisions they make, this is for you. I loathe romance books that have adultery as the main theme. We have a married couple (each contemplating adultery) a woman who has had an affair (and gotten pregnant due to the affair) two teens, one who is horrified that her mother is not special/awesome enough and that's pretty much the whole story.

Ross jumps around to Julia (married woman), Miranda (had the affair) and Faye (Julia's daughter) and also Julia's husband Paul. We get their four points of view throughout the story and honestly I didn't root for anyone. The majority of this book was people excusing or being excused for terrible crap they did. The fact that Julia and Paul's son had an eating disorder (at least it seemed to me) was glossed over. I hated that Julia and Paul never had real conversation, instead they both are looking to other people to paper over the cracks in their marriage. I loathed Paul more since he was contemplating an affair with his assistant. Apparently sexual harassment isn't a thing in the UK?

The writing wasn't great. Maybe if Ross had stuck to Julia and Miranda and left out the other POVs. The flow was too choppy too. At one point I was confused on the timeline and realized I didn't care and continued on with it.

The ending was definitely some pie in the sky stuff, not realistic at all.

This is a lovely book set in an idyllic small town with a good set of characters. At first, so many different points of view frustrated me a little but, by the end, Ms Ross has skilfully woven all of the storylines together. Each character gets tested by their story, but this is definitely an ‘all’s well that ends well’ type of story, which manages to tackle heavier themes but remain lighthearted and not-too-heavy on the drama. I was very glad of the feel-good atmosphere.

There is possibly a little too much backstory included in places, which slowed the pace a little for me, but I got used to that as a story device.

The village atmosphere is very welcoming, I enjoyed the characters, and I was very happy to turn the pages to discover how each storyline resolved.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in return for an honest review.

An Autumn Affair is an enjoyable, heart-warming read. It’s about life, love and motherhood, and about the missed opportunities that tug at the heartstrings as people age. I felt real empathy for Julia, Miranda and Faye, with their different issues and regrets, and I really wanted things to work out for them. Alice Ross connects the lives of these three women—each one at her own personal crossroads—with skill and ease, and the three stories are woven intricately together, although each character has her own very different ending. This is a lovely novel that would be perfect for a rainy day or as a beach read. Alice Ross has a lovely author voice and her warmth and enjoyment of story telling shines through.

An Autumn Affair follows the lives of two grown women and a teenager on the verge of becoming an adult. All three ladies have their own story to tell, and as it is known, everyone’s story is different. These ladies are no exception. At first you’re introduced to Julia; a woman who has spent over twenty years trying to get over her first love…by getting married to a man called Paul and having twins. Sounds pretty straight forward doesn’t it? But, during her typical Friday food shopping, Julia found herself re-evaluating her life by a box of Frosties. Thanks to her daughter Faye getting herself into a ‘minor’ pickle, Julia’s eyes become fully open to what has been the obvious decision all along. But is it an easy one?
Now Faye. The teenager. Julia’s daughter. The teenager that wants to be treated like an adult and act like an adult, but doesn’t seem to want to think about consequences. Which results in her wanting her mum…but at what cost?
The third lady you come across in the story is Miranda. She is married to a very wealthy man and has one daughter. She has the lifestyle most women would dream of. But can money really buy happiness? Is everything in Miranda’s life as rosy as people think?
What can I say about ‘An Autumn Affair’? Quite a lot actually! This was another book that I picked to read purely based on the cover, and the title, so everything I read was going to be a surprise. I felt the switching between the three ladies was ever so slightly confusing to begin with, but once I got into the story it flowed so well and I became grateful it was split because my attention could be on each lady and their individual stories. I was hooked after the second chapter and it get me gripped throughout. Every time I read what one lady got up to, I was itching to find out what happened to the next one! Each lady had their own problems to deal with and it did keep me guessing because just when I thought I could predict the next situation, I was totally wrong. I love books that do that! For me personally, the whole point of reading a book is to be surprised and to feel like you’re on an emotional rollercoaster. Did this book live to that? 100% yes. I was shocked at some of the characters stupidity, humbled by how one person can forgive a betrayal, and yes, I welled up. Shock!
Most importantly though I felt that the story carried a very strong message about identity, life and choosing the path that is right for you. Whilst all three ladies seem to be good at putting on a front and making themselves think that they’re happy, deep down they aren’t. But in the end, who gets hurt the most? Whilst the book had humour and light-hearted moments, it also had some very real moments which were written with a great deal of compassion. Reading ‘An Autumn Affair’ has been an eye-opener, and a wonderful thought-provoking read. I loved it. If I could sum up this book in one sentence I would say that it is a hug in a book and definitely my go to book of the year so far. I cannot wait to read the second one.

An Autumn Affair, written by Alice Ross, is the first book in the Countryside Dreams series. This book is truly an amazing start to this new series, and I would recommend reading this, as well as the second book in the series, A Summer of Secrets.

"The grass isn't always greener..."

The quote on the front cover explains a lot about this story. The story centers around three women, all at a sort of crossroads in their lives, and all need to make a decision.

Julia is looking for some excitement in her life, something different from her typical day with her twins and her husband, Paul. She has that opportunity when she bumps into an ex-boyfriend, Max, at the store, and contemplates having an affair with him. After all, she never truly got over Max, and wants to find out if she still has feelings for him. But at what cost?

Miranda is living the good life...she has everything she could possibly want...money, a beautiful house, a hard-working and rich husband, and a wonderful daughter. However, she feels as if she is missing out on something. What could she possibly be missing? Does she actually lead the perfect life that other people think she does? Or is there more to her story?

Faye is a teenager that is tired of always being treated like a child by her mother, Julia. As with most teens, she wants to grow up too fast, and might have to pay a price for doing so.

I could write more, but I don't want to reveal any spoilers from this well written and heartfelt story. The characters are realistic and genuine. The author does an amazing job in portraying their feelings, and you feel as if you are taking the journey with each one of them. The story held my attention for the entire book, and had me guessing what would happen next. There are some unexpected twists to the story, and that only made it even more interesting. Behind each woman's struggle, there is a common theme...being true to yourself. All of these women contemplate making a change in one way or another, but as we all know, actions have consequences. Overall, I truly loved following the journey of these women, and can't wait to read the next book in the series.

I was given a digital copy of this book from Carina UK and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Firstly thanks to Carina for the review copy of this title via NetGalley. This is the first book of Alice’s that I’ve read and I really enjoyed it. I will be taking part in the blog tour in June for the next book in the series – A Summer of Secrets.

The story is about three women – Julia, Miranda and Faye. Each of their lives is intertwined but they all have a very different story. The three characters all have their own narratives throughout so you can get to know them better as individuals but also how they are portrayed through the eyes of the other characters.

Julia is a harassed wife and mother of two who feels taken for granted and that her life is passing her by. At times I was annoyed with Julia’s behaviour in the book. While all three characters could be selfish throughout I felt like Julia was the guiltiest of this. Julia feels like she is a passenger in her own life but has spent a number of years putting up with it instead of attempting to change it until it was too late.

Faye is the teenage daughter of Julia and is going through the usual teenage angst and emotions. She resents her uncool mum and feels like she’s not good enough compared to her brother. Faye is the epitome of every teenage girl at some point in her life. She rebels, and her irresponsible and naïve actions land her in trouble. Although Faye came across as petulant and as if she took her life for granted there is something very recognisable about her character, bringing her to life.

Miranda has a secret and she’s trying to deal with it herself before anyone else finds out. She’s in a downward spiral for most of the book and is the character who gained most of my sympathy. She portrays the grown up aftermath of the path Faye was heading down in the beginning of the book and has suffered the consequences of it.

None of the three women are happy but they’re all faced with a choice to rectify that. This book is an emotional rollercoaster as the three stories develop. I read this in two sitting as Alice’s writing was easy to lose yourself in and immerse yourself in the story. Each woman has their own pull and the three stories together form a good overall message of not settling for what you have, chasing your dreams and never taking your family for granted.

Review first posted on my blog 'A Spoonful of Happy Endings': http://spoonfulofhappyendings.blogspo...

'An Autumn Affair' focuses on three different women living in the same town, all dealing with their own issues. Julia has been married to Paul for years and they have two children together. But when she bumps into her ex-boyfriend Max during her Friday afternoon shopping trip, she can't think about anything else but Max anymore. Julia's teenage daughter Faye wants nothing more than to be treated as the adult she feels she is, and the chance to walk away from her boring small town life. Miranda is married to a wealthy man, lives in a wonderful home and has a great daughter, but what appears quite perfect from the outside, is actually quite broken from the inside, and Miranda is struggling to find a solution that will make her problems go away...

'An Autumn Affair' is the first instalment of the new four-part series 'Countryside Dreams' by author Alice Ross, and a very promising start indeed! I straight away really liked the pretty cover of the book and am glad to say the story inside definitely matched it. The novella focuses on three female characters, Miranda, Julia and Faye, who are all dealing with their own issues. Numerous topics are explored within the pages of the book, including friendship, lost love, family, and betrayal. Because of the three storylines and the various topics tackled in the different stories, I wanted to keep on reading and didn't get bored at any time by the characters and/or the storylines.

Alice Ross' writing really fits the chick lit genre; a great mix of both description and dialogue, and with convincing, relatable and likeable characters at its core. I am already curious to see what the second part of the series, 'A Summer of Secrets', has in store for us and I have high hopes I will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed this first instalment. Overall, I thought 'An Autumn Affair' was another great read by publisher Carina UK and a, for me personally, wonderful introduction to Alice Ross' writing; an entertaining and easy-to-read novella which I am positive many women's fiction/chick lit fans will enjoy as much as I did!

This for me was a very easy read, and that is a good thing. Generally when a book has so many characters and points of view i can get a little confused, but this flowed so well and into each other i knew exactly where i was and who i was with. As Alice Ross quotes on her blurb, this is about 'Three women, each with two options, needing to make one choice. When it comes to affairs of the heart, nothing is ever simple!'
First we meet Julia, who is married to husband Paul, and has twins, Leo and Faye. Lacking some excitement in her life, she one day bumps into her ex boyfriend, Max, from high school. Clearly they both still have feelings for each other and Julia never got over Max all those years ago. Will Julia be tempted into an affair with Max or will she stay true to Paul?.
Faye is Julia's teenage daughter and feels her mum is always treating her like a child. She thinks she is a grown up and wants out of her sad life in the village, but is she as grown up and able as she thinks?.
Lastly meet Miranda, who is living the the good life. She has a rich hard working husband Doug, a beautiful big house, lots of money and a lovely daughter Josie, with Doug away on business all the time, Miranda feels there is something lacking amd missing in her life. Maybe she doesnt have the perfect life that people think she has and what secrets could she possibly be hiding?.
I really enjoyed this and felt connected to all the characters. It is light hearted read in places and clearly shows that life is not always as it seems. Although people appear to be happy on the outside, that doesnt necessarily mean they are on the inside.
Alice Ross seemed to of connected this story well and she had much empathy for everyone. You can see she clearly thought about these characters and made them her own. I for one can not wait for the next book and get back to Buttersly.

An Autumn Affair is a really cute story telling the tales of the lives of three women - each with choices to make which will either enhance or hinder their lives.

I found the first half of An Autumn Affair quite slow to get into, and then when I found the pace picked up, the story felt like it was over before it really began.

Julia is mother of twin, Faye being one of them. She is in a lifeless marriage which she kind of fell into after falling pregnant and her career dreams halted. When she meets and ex boyfriend who was the love of her life in the local supermarket she wonders if there is more to life than what she is currently living. Faye is quite rebellious and is short on friends - that is until she is befriended by Josie - daughter of Miranda.
Miranda comes with her own issues - she's just discovered she's pregnant by a man who isn't her husband!

As the three women - Julia, Miranda and Faye make their decisions in their own lives, their paths are crossed and new friendships are made whilst old relationships are dealt.

I enjoyed reading this book, however for me personally I felt that there was something missing - I was waiting for a few fireworks that never came.
That said, if your looking for a really easy going, chilled out book to read then An Autumn Affair is one for you.

This is a previously released book released in four separate books. In an Autumn Affair two women are both leading a slightly sad personal life- their husbands are very distant due to work commitments. Miranda seems to have it all- she has a lovely house and wears lovely clothes. Her daughter has her own tennis coach. Julia has just met her first love, whilst shopping. She's tempted to take time out of her humdrum life and make a few choices just for her. They are an unlikely pair to meet each other- but they are linked by their teenage daughters.

The book explores marriage, family life, romance and secrets and we are taken on a series of adventures with the different characters. They both come to recognise that they need to make changes- just what changes will they choose to make?

This was a lovely easy read and I can't wait to read more in the series.

With thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Julia is coasting through life she is busy looking after her husband and teenage twins but is there something missing or is this as good as it gets? When on her normal Friday supermarket shop she bumps into her ex, the love of her life, she starts to question her actions all those years ago.

Miranda has it all, a rich husband a big house a lovely daughter but is it all as good as it seems or is her husband away on business trips just too often!

Faye is Julia's daughter on the verge of growing up but is she as mature as she seems or when the chips are down down does she really only still want her mother even if she isn't cool like Miranda

A lovely easy read story with great characters and I am really looking forward to the next instalment from Buttersly

This was a really good introduction to the Countryside Dreams series, its four inter connecting storylines. There are many dubious morals that are discussed. The book is very amusing in places and generally is an easy book to read. I loved Josie's birthday party and the thought that went into that impressive. Easily one of my favourite scenes in the book. I'm really looking forward to returning to Buttersley in the next book of the series.

A good story but I did feel that there was a little jumping about between the characters which made it a little difficult at times to follow but I did enjoy it.
