Both the premise as well as the cover were intriguing as Hel (myth pun haha (pls don’t sue me…)) and immediately sold me on the book, which had its little ups and downs (shortly before the end and in the middle it dragged a bit), but overall I quite enjoyed it.

This was my first horror read of spooky season, and honestly? It hit all the right places. Somehow, though, it didn’t quite hold me in its grip the way I wanted it to.

First, I have to give credit where it’s due: the writing was superb, and the story itself was exceptional. There weren’t a bunch of loose ends that left me scratching my head. Everything made sense, and the story was gritty, dark, spooky, and haunting—basically everything I want from folk horror.

And the atmosphere? EVERYTHING.

The author did an incredible job creating a setting that felt eerie and oppressive in exactly the right ways. The characters were unique and interesting, and the story itself was compelling enough that I kept thinking about it even when I wasn’t reading.

Where I struggled was maintaining that edge-of-your-seat feeling throughout the entire book.

That said, I’m not sure I can really blame the book for that. I think this may be one of the challenges of experiencing horror in written form. It’s difficult for the average reader to sit down and consume a horror novel in one uninterrupted sitting, and every time I had to put this one down, I felt like it broke the immersion just a little. When I came back to it, it took some time to find that tension again.

So, consider this less of a criticism and more of a heads-up from someone reading this particular type of horror for the first time: this is a book that I think would be best experienced when you can really settle into it. The atmosphere is a huge part of the experience, and interruptions can take some of the bite out of that tension.

Interestingly, throughout the entire book, I kept thinking, This would make an AMAZING movie.

And wouldn’t you know it—when I reached the end, I discovered there actually IS a film adaptation, and it was featured at Screamfest LA.

Needless to say, I’ll be watching that immediately.

Overall, this was a fantastic way to kick off spooky season. It was dark, eerie, atmospheric, and exactly the kind of folk horror I’ve been wanting to dive into. While it didn’t completely keep me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end, I still thoroughly enjoyed the story and would absolutely read more like this.

Now I just need to see if the movie manages to capture that atmosphere.
