Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.
Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.
A surprisingly wide range of non-Holmes stories, from sea tales to (fairly obvious) mysteries to mad scientist romps to psychological thrillers to war stories to paranormal shenanigans. I found the sea stories (pirate tales for the most part) least interesting. His medical background lends a solid– and a surprisingly modern – base to his discussion of disease and treatment. The few times he lets his sense of humor run loose, he comes up with wild explosions of nonsense that remind me of Stephen Leacock. I wish the stories included publication dates and had been put in chronological order, rather than by "type," but lots of fun here.
It was interesting and informative to read the side variety of stories covered in this book. Up to this time my main reading 📚 by this author was the writings of Sherlock Holmes. The military war stories were not as interesting as the others. I gather that the facts stated in the stories were true & I am surprised by the author 's vast amount of knowledge he had. I recommend this book.
