Lady's Wager

Rate this book
Charlotte Stuart is an heiress dedicated to charitable causes who's been betrayed by the false love of a fortune hunter before. Ridiculed by Paris society for her mistake, she vows never to fall victim to the weakness of love again. Driven back to England by the collapse of the Peace of Amiens, she enters London society and meets Lord Edward Woodcliff, a handsome Viscount in straightened circumstances. Falling for him means risking being humiliated again. Edward has come to London to find a wife. Made leery of marriage by his father’s disastrous second marriage, Edward feigns poverty in order to find a woman who loves him and not his wealth. He loses his heart to the independent and spirited Charlotte, but her fear of being betrayed, and his hesitation to make a matrimonial mistake, prove difficult to overcome. All seems hopeless until Edward challenges Charlotte to a wager. If he wins, he gains her hand in marriage. If he loses, then Charlotte is free of him. Charlotte accepts the wager only to lose her hand and her heart to Edward. Now Charlotte must put aside her fears of being betrayed by love long enough to let Edward into her life and admit he is the man of her dreams. Lady's Wager was previously published in 2008. The emotions are heightened and the internal conflicts deepened in this new version of my clean Regency romance. 50,000 words. “Lee's novel hits the sweet spot." – RT Book Reviews on Engagement of Convenience Other Regency Romances by Georgie A Debt Paid in Marriage The Courtesan's Book of Secrets Rescued from Ruin Engagement of Convenience Hero's Redemption Other Historicals by Georgie Studio Relations Mask of the Gladiator

An excellent read for those who enjoy traditional "sweet". Regencies or G rated romance. Georgie Lee has crafted an engaging story of white lies and true love with an authentic period feel.

I thoroughly enjoyed Lady's Wager. Charlotte and Edward's romance really drew me in and had me wishing and hoping that they could work out their very real differences (and since it is a romance, we know they will, but still the author made me worried for them). The author did a great job of showing us the Regency world with accurate details and precise description. I love the author's heroines - Charlotte is spirited and had her own opinions, interests, and goals. Edward is everything you want a Regency hero to be - passionate, smoldering, and above all, a gentleman. I've read a number of this author's books, and she never disappoints. Can't wait for the next one!

I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review.
Charlotte Stuart is an heiress who enjoys giving money to charity to help the less fortunate. She had fallen in love once, but he was just with her for her money, and she was mortified when she discovered that. Now she is back in London high society where she meets Lord Woodcliff. She isn’t of her feelings for him, but she knows that she will not make a fool of herself again.
I love reading short historical romance novels. They do not take much time, and they usually leave me feeling satisfied. I loved this story….up until the end. There is always a small conflict in this type of story, but for some reason in this story I just felt that it was never resolved. I felt that the happy ending came too easily, I would have liked to see the main characters talk a bit more before everything just wrapped itself up. But overall, the story wasn’t horrible, and I would definitely read more by this author.

This was the first book by Georgie Lee that I've read and I really liked it.

I'm unfamiliar with the Regency period so I don't know if the book was true to the time period, but I did find myself transported back in time to when society was completely different in regards to its ethics and customs.

I liked the love story of Charlotte and Edward and liked both these characters, and I loved the supporting characters too, even the dog Minnie was lovable.

I found this book to be an enjoyable light, sweet romance with some amusing moments, and I finished the book quite quickly.

Definitely a recommended read, particularly if, like me, you don't usually read this genre.

I really like this story. I liked Charlotte and Edward and their struggle with pride and judging people without getting to know them. Charlotte was worse than Edward but the struggle kept the story moving. I don't read this genre often but books as god as this one have me reading more. I did enjoy it so much.

Fairly good Nov 2022

The story was good the characters entertaining but they were both exceedingly snobbish and arrogant each believing they were right and the other wrong especially Edward his reasoning was faulty

It had the bones of a good story but there was too much distrust & their fragile connection, on several occasions, easily broken with a simple misspoken phrase.

witty and entertaining

A delightful read. A lady and an earl who are disheartened and resort not to reveal their true status. A lot of laughs.

In her novel, Lady’s Wager, Georgie Lee wages a war of the hearts between her hero and heroine in their struggle with trust, especially in a society where finding love was considered a luxury that many could not afford, for marriages of convenience was common and detrimental to women of good fortune. Lee takes it further by introducing a hero who is rich, but pretends to be poor so that he can find a woman who would love him for himself and not his fortune.

The story begins with a reminder to the reader on the constrictions society places on women during the Georgian/Regency period. Her heroine Charlotte Stuart is getting ready for a soiree where the guests are apothecaries. Members of the hospital Charlotte is trying to raise money for. Her aunt Mary gently reprimands her, “Had I known you intended to entertain apothecaries, I never would have sent the invitation…You said you wished to host a small soiree. I was so happy to see you finally showing an interest in proper society.” Charlotte ignores the slight comment about conformity. She is clearly a young woman of tomorrow and refuses to settle just because society deems it.

Victoria Lynn Schmidt (Author, 45 Master Characters), uses Artemis, to explore the Amazon. The Amazon is a feminist, who values her independence and believes in fighting for the underdog. In Schmidt’s book the underdog for the Amazonian are the women and children who need her protection.

Lee’s heroine falls into the Amazonian archetype in that Charlotte stands up for her causes, isn’t afraid to go against social norms and is self-sufficient. In Lady’s Wager, the underdogs and Charlotte’s causes were the hospitals lacking funds in order to have the appropriate medicines and technology needed to help its patients. In her travels, she always managed to find a hospital to help.

While this may be an admirable trait of Charlotte’s, she has her flaws as well. According to Schmidt the Amazonian while having many assets, also has flaws, she “can be very opinionated and thickheaded, and puts on blinders; everything but the goal at hand is forgotten” to list a few (Schmidt 37).

Lord Woodcliff, Lee’s hero is just as flawed―claiming to being a pauper when he truly is not. He is untrusting of the women of his society, for marriage was often seen as a way of making prosperous connections―connections, which often included the acquisition of a title and/or fortune. It was refreshing to see a man go through some of the angst women faced during the Georgian period.

The story is well written and while the dialect is simple, don’t let that fool you into thinking it is not a story worth reading. Simple prose can often be as beautiful as a love sonnet. Lady’s Wager is a sweet story about trust and love and realizing that with the right partner you can have both during a time when marrying for love was rare.

I liked the plot, the setting and the back-story of the characters. Unfortunately, the actual execution of the storyline was lacking. I didn't feel the chemistry between the two leads and the dialogue was rather flat. Some humorous banter would have helped in the romantic development, rather than suddenly going from 'I find him such an arrogant bore' to
"You two are so obviously in love and meant for one another". (Henry)

The thing that killed the story for me, though, was that I didn't like the heroine. Apart from her charitable work, she didn't have any attractive qualities and was obstinate, proud and seemed to only find fault in others. (Pet peeve - when she buys the painting)

I really enjoyed reading this Regency historical. The heat level is sweet, but the chemistry is there between the main characters so the tension remains high. The story is rich in historical details (art and medical) and the conflict is not flimsy or solved/dismissed with a conversation. The characters leapt off the page as I read, as they were well drawn and motivated. The secondary characters also helped develop the story and didn't detract from it in the least. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Fans of historical romances may enjoy this, since the characters were likable and the action pretty standard for the sub genre. A subplot about medicine of the time was interesting. The writing felt a bit clunky, though.

Nice sweet read about two idiots who are meant for each other but let other people's past actions. get in their way. A minus for using logic everywhere else in their lives but in the romance area.

Lady's Wager is my first book by Georgie Lee. Ms Lee has impressed me with her well-written story. Charlotte and Edward's story is a twisted tale loaded with awesome characters. Ms Lee has loaded her book with lots of drama, bits of humor and suspense. This story is a clean read, appropriate for any age. Lady's Wager is a fairly short read, a great choice for historical romance fans with limited time for reading. I enjoyed Lady's Wager and would happily read more from Georgie Lee in the future. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book that I received from instaFreebie.
