This series has been a 5 out of 5 since the begining. I'm going to miss Yona and Hak and all the dragons so much. But I think it has a beautiful ending for this amazing story

We hate to part ways 🥹🥹🥹 there’s no other historical shojo manga series that is so unputdownable other than this masterpiece. I will miss Yona, Hak, and the dragons… so much, with all my heart. Read this volume 3 months ago, and hadn’t moved on ever since. And this fucking cover, can’t help but cry again… tears of joy, of course… but with bittersweet notes in it. I’m mostly sad that it’s over, but happy that Yona came a long, long way and finally achieved her purpose. Such an unforgettable experience.

I was so surprised to see that this is the last volume of the series; I wasn't expecting that.

Originally, I couldn't decide if I liked it or nor. That sudden knowledge that the manga was about to end left me unmoored, it felt like there were too many things still in need of being resolved, and the allotted amount of time for them was running out. I'm glad to say, that the ending felt quite satisfying.

And yet, saying that is misleading because, in all truthfulness, I would have gladly taken another 50 chapters with these characters, even if the plot was as thin as paper by then.

I can, even if I tried, not remember earlier volumes, and seeing how far each of the characters has come makes me emotional. It's been a long, arduous journey to get here, but every second of it was absolutely precious.

By the end, I can say without a doubt that Yona and Hak both stole my heart, but it is Yona, our beautifully strong titular character, who deserves the shout-out for all that she accomplish through her hard-won and eventful imposed adventures. We've been through a lot, and seeing us here is nothing if not the best ending possible.

This was such an amazing manga and journey, and I’m glad that everyone got a happy ending and that even Su-won ended up still being alive and well (tho I still have mixed feelings about him). The art was amazing throughout the story and I really loved the way Yona’s character grew stronger each chapter and turned into a badass woman.

It’s sad to see the (former) dragon warriors leave Yona’s side, but to see them trying to reconcile with their past and that they decided to visit their village was nice to see. Also I ship Hak and Yona so much, so I’m glad he always stays by her side.

I’m also so glad that season 2 has been announced and excited to see them on screen again 🥰

counting this as my review for the entire series.
what a gem of a manga. it's the first shoujo series i've read and i am so obsessed!! the romance between yona and hak was so excellently done, the story arcs were amazing, and the found family especially means soo much to me. i love the happy hungry bunch more than words can describe😭💗😭💗😭💗 i haven't had a manga affect me this much since PEAKYUU aka my fav manga oat

this series is genuinely so special and all the characters (especially the female characters) were written so well. i do think that 1) yoon could have been developed a bit further/gotten more screen time in the last arc, 2) there could have been 1-2 more chapters for wrapping things up, and 3) there were definitely some weak points in the story (more to do w pacing imo) but it's still so worth your time. the earlier arcs especially, like sei and the water tribe are some of the most fun i've had reading manga!

9/10 stars. HAPPY HUNGRY BUNCH FOREVER!!

Even after facing countless endings, they remain ever bittersweet. I really can’t believe it’s over. I regret not following along with the chapter releases as they dropped for the last 4/5 years/catching up sooner before the end, so I think I’ll always regret not being able to extend my goodbye to this beautiful series. At the same time, it’s been such a gift to reread this take from start to finish and fall in love with this story all over again. And it happened at a point in my life that I think I really needed it. And let’s be real, reading that last arc monthly? would’ve been akin to torture. I still have the bonus chapters to read and although I’m not sure if they’ll be able to satisfy my thirst for more, I’m grateful for just another second with these characters. It feels like a miracle that after 10 years we are finally getting another season of the anime and I can’t wait to once again relive this beautiful tale of yona’s. honestly there’s so much I want to say about how incredible this story is, but I can’t find the right words at the moment; maybe I’ll come back and write a proper review later on once the tears cease. thank you kusanagi for writing such an exquisite adventure that will be engraved on my soul for all time

I like this series overall (love all the characters so much! I binge read most of it in the past three months), but the final conflict in this series is so unsatisfying for me after almost 50 volumes. They seemed really rushed to finally finish this series after almost 20 years of working on it...

There will be SPOILERS in this review!

Well, I finally know what to include in the review of this volume. I feels like I read the chapters ages ago so I will have to rely on my notes, but yeah it feels like no one really knows what is going on with the last two volumes of the manga now that it ended. I really hope that this list of chapters was accurate so that I don’t say too much.

So first of all, Hak kinda fucking dies in here. Like, what? How dare you Kusanagi? It was literally traumatizing and then the manga was on a break for 3 fucking months so it was really just infuriating. And then my bro was just vibing with one of the dragon gods in the afterlife I guess because he had no body to get back to or something. He’ll come back though so that’s fine but still, you can’t do this to me. It’s not funny. Oh and he is the shield which is cute.

Also Su-won actually helps a lot in this volume so that’s something. I still hate this little bitch but I guess he did get his redemption. Like, I do appreciate that he was ready to sacrifice himself for Yona and Hak but it still doesn’t excuse his actions. Honestly, I was hoping so much the entire time that he would just die.

We also get some Yona and Hak moments that are just wholesome. I am obsessed with how much he loves her and wants to protect her but I also appreciate how loyal he is to the dragons. He really doesn’t want to lose them (the warriors I mean, not the dragons themselves). Oh and I have to mention how I love everyone being there for Zeno when he wants to give up. It’s nice and wholesome.

Anyway, these last few chapters are actually kinda confusing. It just feels like Kusanagi didn’t have everything figured out (hmmm… I wonder what that 3 month break was for?) and then she kinda rushed everything just so she could wrap this long series up. I’m giving this 3 stars because yes, it has some great moments but then again I do feel like some things come out of nowhere or just exist for convenience so yeah. I am looking forward to the bonus chapters though so I can’t wait to actually write the review for the last volume, that being volume 48.

God, how I miss reading this manga and watching the anime, well worth holding my greedy self back for a year (save me from my exams).

Where do I even start?? This manga was so perfect, and yet at the same time it was a roller coaster of emotions, and I loved every single second of it. I devoured all 276 chapters in 5 days; that should tell you all you need to know. The ending was amazing even though I cried so much before it that I couldn't see through my tears; no spoilers here; go read it for yourself, YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

★ I think one of the main things I enjoyed in this manga was Yona's character development and just how precious she is. Going from not knowing anything about Kouka to fighting so hard for its people even when they couldn't see all that she did for them. The group too IT'S SO FRICKING CUTEEE WHY CAN'T I BE A PART OF IT??? Thank god for my horrible memory because it means I can step back inside this world again, even though it won't be for the first time; I'm still immensely grateful for it.

★ OKAY NOW TO GET INTO THE SPOILER SECTION, WARNING FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T READ IT PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE SCROLL TY. Let's just say the author had be gagged towards the end multiples times from the whole crimson dragon illness situation, the backstories (I still despise Soo-won's dad, I could have treated his wife so much better), the dragon gods (screw these mf's except the green one), the whole prophecy and the way that unfolded, nothing could have prepared me for it. But I was hoping the dragons could get to live their lives and essentially end the whole bloodline situation, and even though in the beginning I wasn't the biggest fan of Soo-won, he really grew on me, and I didn't want him to die either, so I'm glad they got their happy ending.

ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ The Characters ˏˋ°•*⁀➷ˏˋ°•*⁀➷

Yona:
I already talked about her earlier, but it wasn't enough. She's fully cemented herself as one of my favourite female characters of all time. Her resilience throughout this manga, her archery skills and how amazing she is at diplomatic relations??? You know she's good when she has your enemies asking how she's friends with the entire kingdom. Coolest 16 yo oat.

Hak:
Now, where do I start with this one?? NOBODY'S WANTED SOMEBODY MOREEE, YES THAT WAS AN OLIVIA RODRIGO REFERENCE I WAS LISTENING TO THE ALBUM FOR THE FIRST TIME WHEN READING THIS MANGA, AND I WAS IN HEAVEN, I HAD THE TIME OF MY LIFE. No, but seriously, Hak really YEARNEDDD for Yona across this manga, and the way he convinced himself that they could never get together so that he wouldn't get his hopes up?? And that one scene when Yona tried to give him water, and he said that he didn't get enough?? I have never wanted to jump off a building so badly; I still do- anyway, LOVE HAK, HE'S AMAZING, THE STANDARD, OUR DARK DRAGON, CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD FOR YONA, HE'S THE MANGA VERSION OF PERCY JACKSON IDC.

Yun:
OH HOW I LOVE YUN, OH HOW I LOVE YUN, HE'S SO CUTE. His and Yona's relationship was so cute, and the relationship he had with the rest of the group. The humour in this manga also needs to be studied because of the way everyone called Yun their mom?? God, I love all of them.

The Dragon's:
"Yona dear", Jaeha, Jaeha, Jaeha, he needs to win the award for being the best wingman in this whole manga. Listen, I know he's a player and all that, but his advice for Yona in this manga when it came to Hak was so endearing to read, giving my girl the courage she needed to talk it out with Hak, and overall, just him teasing Hak to move the relationship forward was everything to me and more ten times over.

Kija, Kija, Kija, he's so amazing that they had to nerf him by making him scared of bugs, but honestly, me too; we're basically meant to be, so where is he?? His loyalty to Yona right from the beginning and how he and Jaeha were so protective over Shin-ah makes me want to burst into tears. I love how they all saw each other as brothers.

SHIN-AHH, OUR SWEET CHILD, OUR CINNAMON ROLL THAT WILL FIGHT AND KILL YOU IF YOU HURT YONA, OH HOW I LOVE YOU. His backstory in the anime made me cry; he deserves the world, and I'm so happy he found this group. And yes, it makes so much sense that he's the younger brother among the dragons. AND MY SWEET AO, I LOVE YOU DEARLY

Lastly, Zeno, I LOVE HIM TOO, BUT BRO WAS SCARING ME IN THE LAST FEW CHAPTERS. He truly did suffer so much, and his backstory makes me want to burst into sobs just thinking about it. It warms my heart that he visited all of them when they were younger. Surprisingly gives really solid advice too despite pretending to be an airhead 99% of the time, save Yun from this one.

Lili:
OUR AMAZING GIRL, CARRIED THE PACING ISTG SINCE EVERY TIME IT STARTED GETTING SLOW SHE WOULD SHOW UP AND JUST MAKE IT A HUNDRED TIMES BETTER. WE ARE ONE OF THE SAME, BOTH OF US SIMPING FOR MEN OVER THE AGE OF 35 AND BOTH OF US CRYING WHEN GEUN TAE GOT HIS KID....IN ANOTHER LIFEEE I WOULD BE YOUR GIRL. Anyways, safe to say and PROUDLY TOO that I was a Soo-won and Lili shipper ever since they first met purely because I never truly hated Soo-won; he was an annoying pest at most. His advisor, Kye Sook, pissed me off ten times more, but glad they saw the light in the end. But truly loved the crumbs we got of Soo-won and Lili in the side stories, but I loved seeing her and Yona's friendship wayyyy more, especially the scene when they talked about Hak together. Yona 100%% rubbed off on her.

Other Characters:
I miss my trio; each time I think about them, I tear up. The only complaint I have with this manga was how we never really got to see how they progressed in the future; I wished we got more side stories, but that's just being greedy. Soo-won really grew on me towards the end, especially when he stabbed the crimson dragon king's body; I laughed so hard my mom thought I finally lost it. Appreciation post for Algira, Vold, Mei-Nyan and Val, who's the Yona of the Dawn version of Akane from TBHK I SWEAR. LOVE THEM ALL. SON MUNDOK, THE MAN YOU ARE, TAEWOO, MIN-SOO, TAE-JUN, OGI, AND EVERYONE ELSE WHO HELPED OUR MAIN SQUAD, I LOVE YOU ALL TOO.

Alas, that ends my rambling; in my defence, there were 276 chapters worth of content to talk about; I tried to summarise it as much as I could, but then something else would come up, so oh well. Forever going to love and miss my adventures with the Dark Dragon and The Happy Hungry Bunch GO PICK THIS UP RIGHT NOW

Spoilers!

I don't normally review individual volumes of a series like this, but I just want to air my personal feelings on this ending. For a series I LOVED from start to finish, with so few lulls in the story and nothing but exceptional writing from start to finish, I was disappointed with the ending.

For one, it felt super rushed, and the scenes with the dragon gods dragged. I was having a hard time keeping track of all their decisions and motivations. The prophecy being fulfilled felt like an afterthought in the end.

I would have preferred at least a few more chapters after the climax to sort of tie everything up instead of just one, because we have spent so much time watching the main characters suffer and LOVE one another so ferociously, yet we only get a tiny glimpse of them being happy before the manga ends for good, and on a bittersweet note to boot.

The war with South Kai is never mentioned, despite not being finished. The relationship between Hak/Yona feels like it should have been upfront and center but their happy ending felt more like a footnote. Zeno leaving to wander the earth again felt like an odd choice, because his character arc was him learning to cherish his friends and value their time/lives, and now that he is no longer immortal, he decides to leave them behind and do what he's been doing for 2000 years. I would have expected him to chose to stay by his friends side and live out his remaining years around the people he cares about since he was unable to do it for so long.

We didn't get any ending for the Xing characters, Lili, the Wind Tribe, the tribe generals, nor Mei and Val.

We also don't get any insight into Kouka's reaction to their BELOVED king randomly stepping down to allow their princess to rule. It's just...accepted. I felt that was an odd choice since the feelings of the Kouka people played a huge role in the story thus far.

On a personal note, I just hate the idea of Jaeha returning to piracy and leaving all his friends/brothers behind. I don't know, it just makes me sad, like they didn't mean anything to him in the end.

All in all, I was surprised how lackluster the ending felt for a series that was genuinely so well written and paced. I didn't expect the creator to rush such an anticipated moment for everyone.

LOL so im just supposed to move on? after all that?

insert that laughing crying pedro pascal meme because that was me this entire volume.

i genuinely am not sure how to move on from this series. i have been reading this on and off since about 2012 when i randomly found the first couple of chapters translated and then a friend of mine recently finally forced me to reread and catch up with the series now that its completed and i just… im feeling so many emotions.

this is one of those series that so many people are missing out on for multiple reasons. A lot of manga enjoyers avoid this series because of the romance tag and it is just so much more than that. Then there are the people who just don’t like manga because its “cringe” or whatever but the booktok romantasy folks would EAT THIS UP!! Lastly, there are the people who do read this series and only care about the hot male characters in this series… get a fucking grip. On one hand, do whatever you want, but also dont diminish the overall story and the characters themselves into “oh i love suwon and hak because they are hot omg omg!!” genuinely why are you reading this lmao.

Yona of the Dawn is a 10 star series and truly unforgettable. The strong and complex characters, the insane plot and politics, the unique and heart warming found family… i could just go on and on. I am so grateful to be able to read this to completion and watch my girl yona find herself.

I already miss these characters. If youve read this all the way through for some reason and havent given this series or even manga in general a try, do it. You might regret it a little, but its worth it when you find something so special like Yona of the Dawn. Thank you Mizuho Kusanagi.

Akatsuki no Yona is a manga that I completely fell in love with a decade ago. During these 10 years, there are times I hated it, where it annoyed me, but to its core it’s a manga that brought me a lot of comfort. I can't say it’s perfect, but it’s one that was part of my life for so long I feel like I grew a little bit with the characters. I was absolutely terrified to read its conclusion, but the author managed to write what is one of the best volumes of the manga as its finale.

The intensity of the plot is through the roof, as our beloved characters are giving everything in order to save each other. Up until the climax, I had no idea if all of them would manage to survive, and what would be the cost of it all. Each chapter brought beautifully drawn action scenes and very good conclusions for the character development, that made it very hard to wait for the next release.

The ending itself is very satisfying, as everything is brought to how it should be. I was so scared it would feel rushed, or too easy, but it came to be as the natural conclusion of a decade long struggle. It’s bittersweet, but it’s so full of hope, and isn't that the core of AkaYona itself?

Ultimately I’m so grateful to have had this story in my life for so long. I’m thankful to have fallen in love with Soowon, who will always stay as one of my favorite characters. I can only applaud the author for maintaining such high quality for so long. I’m so happy I’ll get to rediscover this manga with the continuation of the anime. And I will always be recommending this story to others, for years and years to come.

I don’t think any other shoujou manga can top Yona of the Dawn.

Yona had some of the best character development I’ve ever read in a book/manga, it was really refreshing to see a female character written in such a way. The way she transitioned into a King-like character whilst still holding onto her personality was done so well- it wasn’t forced at all!!!!

Hak was incredible from the beginning to the end, every panel where he was battling was drawn so so well and his inner conflict with Suwon added great tension. The romance aspect with Yona was balanced perfectly with how funny the dynamics were with the dragons and Yun.

I loved that the dragons, especially Zeno, were able to be free of the dragons but it’s really sad that the Happy Hungry Brunch won’t be together anymore :(

I do think the ending was a bit abrupt, but the whole experience of reading the series really makes up for it. It’s a shame it’s over.

I cannot explain the conflicting emotions I am feeling with letting go 😅 I’ve followed this manga since it began in 2009 and I’ve delayed reading the last few chapters, unable to accept letting go of Yona. I loved growing up alongside Yona seeing her go from a defenseless princess to such a powerful leader. I almost regret not keeping in time with its biweekly release in its final arc, but having one war after another was exhausting, like give them a breeeaaak. Let the Thunder Beast heal! But I am so happy the boys become freed of their bonds and can start living a normal life - Shin-Ah and Zeno especially deserve it fufufufu \(߹𖥦߹ \ ). Anyway, so excited for season 2 and I really hope the entire series gets adapted - probably won’t but one can dream.

One of the best manga EVER I will take none of it amazing female lead, cool fantasy, awesome action, sometimes cringey but overall very sweet romance and even though there was a kind of love triangle there was no nonsense about who our girl was gonna end up with we KNEW. We KNEW from the start and I just love all the characters. A complex yet simple story; wish the ending was a bit more drawn out but honestly a better ending than most manga have and the character development of all the characters was just so good. And a happy ending! I started reading this manga ages ago so it's so nice to see that it finished well. I'll always miss these characters there's something about manga and actually seeing characters that just makes you so attached to them. Goodbye Yona of the Dawn <3

I'm gonna miss suwon smmmm.
No one in this manga had me as invested as he did! whenever he showed up, I was instantly hooked and excited especially when it's about hak and yona, the dynamic between those three was easily one of my favorite parts of the story.
Suwon was by far the most fascinating character to me, and every appearance of his kept me wanting more (YES I NEED MORE OF HIM)

something that annoyed me, though, was how much wasted potential hak had. He could've been an even better character if his existence didn't revolve around yona almost all the time.
I wish he had more development, goals, and conflicts that were his own...

ALSO, one of my favorite things in this manga are the HUGS!

Ending and last two non volume chapters were crazy. Don’t love that suwon didn’t die but asides from that amazing volume and way to end the series. Genuinely can’t believe this series is done and my dragon boys are gone. I’ve grown so much with this story and its characters and I will miss it dearly especially Hak and even Yona, definitely a great series and I’m glad that after watching the anime I turned to the manga and never looked back, because that led to an adventure with a series and characters I will never forget.

The ending itself felt a bit cold after everything they went through, but the arc itself is very cool and I liked where most of the pieces ended up. I wish we had a bit more time for the falling action, but it's been so long that I understand the creator needed to wrap it up. And I wish some things had been more permanent and/or explored more. Regardless, this series will always be close to my heart and I'm very grateful for the effort and love Kusanagi poured into it throughout the years.
