Walker Hayes likes his life exactly the way it is: quiet, predictable, and free of attachments. As a long-haul truck driver—and occasional contract killer—he prefers his company limited to history podcasts and his fat orange cat, Carrot Cake. People are messy. Complicated. Temporary.
Dakota King is all of those things.
After narrowly escaping a serial killer, Kota expects a hospital visit, maybe some therapy, and definitely a lifetime of trust issues. What he doesn’t expect is being rescued by an emotionally unavailable hitman, who promptly kidnaps Kota until he figures out what to do with him.
To be fair, Walker isn’t entirely sure it’s kidnapping since Kota keeps making himself at home.
Now, they’re crossing state lines with a judgemental cat, a frozen corpse, and an increasingly concerning amount of sexual tension. And with every minute that passes, it becomes harder for Walker to ignore the truth: he doesn’t want Kota to leave.
But happily-ever-afters get complicated when you’re hauling human remains, dodging police attention, and falling for a man who thinks being kidnapped is a perfectly acceptable meet-cute.
Walker has never wanted to keep anyone before.
Unfortunately for Kota, that might be exactly the problem.
Killer Love is the second in a series of interconnected dark romance shorts, each featuring a new couple brought together—and blown apart—by the infamous Heartstopper app.
Onley James lives in North Carolina with her daughter, her daughter-in-law, son-in-law, and a menagerie of animals, both good and evil. James splits her time between writing m/m romance and mainlining dangerous levels of caffeine and attempting to maintain her ever-slipping sanity.
When not at her desk you can find her whining about how much writing she has to do while avoiding said writing by binge-watching unhealthy amounts of television and doom scrolling on social media. She loves true crime documentaries, anti-heroes, and writing kinky, snarky books about morally gray men who fall in love with other men.
The vast amount of times when Walker was referred as “the older man” threw me off… like really 🤦♀️ yes there’s a age gap Walker is 30 and Kota 21-22, but seriously even for novella length it was excessive. Plot wise I guess was okay, it was funny and vulnerable and cute, but I still liked the first one more 🤷♀️
DNF @36% ... and I don't usually rate books that I quit on, but I'm so disappointed that I can't help myself. Probably because this author's other books have been SO much fun, and the reviews on this so far make me feel like I'm in an alternate universe. Is no one else reading what I am? It's so rushed that it feels more like an outline than a story, and the only attempt at character development is of the tell-not-show variety. Sigh. I'm honestly tempted to go back and reread the author's past books to see if the writing quality has degraded as much as it feels like here or if my memory has just put rose-colored glasses on her prior releases. Anyway, glad others are enjoying it so much, but it's a solid nope from me.
This was so fun! Kota made a bad choice getting a ride with a truck driver on the road.. only to be rescued by another truck driver who ‘took care’ of the first one.. perhaps he’s not great at making decisions but Walker is so handsome.. and he has a cute cat called Carrot Cake sooooo.. maybe stay with him forever?
Here's Onley James's latest: a novella titled "Killer Love." It's the second installment of her newest series Kiss. Kill. Repeat.
["Walker Hayes likes his life exactly the way it is: quiet, predictable, and free of attachments. As a long-haul truck driver—and occasional contract killer—he prefers his company limited to history podcasts and his fat orange cat, Carrot Cake. People are messy. Complicated. Temporary.

YES! All of the yes. Horrible and awkward meet-cute? Check. Instant chemistry? Check. Judgy cat also playing match-maker? Check. Imprinting on someone like a baby swan? Check. Wanting to be taken care of plus wanting go take care/worship? Hard check.
I love how hard they fell, how certain they were. I love how messy but not perfect it was. I loooves seeing some Tris and Cade.
I canNOT wait for more!!! Like that bonus epilogue?!?!?!?! D: That shit better be the next book.
Again, would very much not say not to a Mulvaney cross over.
Trigger Warnings: violence, murder, kidnapping, toxic parents, mentions of past SA as a child, and more.
I really enjoyed this novella and raced through it in an afternoon. Was it perfect? No. Someone mentioned the use of older man which he wasn't "older" but I just adored Kota. I found myself chuckling along with his lack of filter and my heart broke a bit for both him and Walker. They both had awful childhoods with Walker going the psychopath route and Kota going the innocent trusting route. So a great pair. I was waiting to see them empty Carrot Cake's litter box. LOL
“You abducted me, remember? I’m kind of at your mercy. I’m going wherever you take me. Is this your first kidnapping or something?”
I would have said the truck is fake but I've seen some videos of this guy in Europe who travels with his son in a truck and it's amazing. It's a tiny house and very luxurious.
So if you enjoy this author's style and want a quick short (with a bit of gore but not excessive) fun banter, it's worth picking up. You get to see Tris and Cade from the first book at the end.
Killer Love is the second book in the Kiss. Kill. Repeat. series. This is an interconnected series that follows a different couple in each book. In my opinion this series is best read in order. This is the story of Walker a long-haul truck driver/occasional contract killer and Dakota(Kota) who narrowly escaped from a serial killer. I couldn't put this book down once I started it. I loved the characters and how real they are. Onley is able to create characters that are fully formed even in a short novella sized story. I really enjoyed watching these two together. I loved everything about this story. I would definitely recommend this book and series or anything Onley James writes as a 5 star read.
This is a strangers to more dark romance novella, featuring Dakota King and Walker Hayes, and is book two in the Kiss. Kill. Repeat. series.
After surviving a serial killer, Dakota is unexpectedly “kidnapped” by Walker, the long-haul truck driver, part-time hitman, who prefers the company of his cat to people.
I am loving this series! Kota and Walker were so entertaining and I loved how they were so drawn to eachother. Great cameos from book one.
Things to expect in this book are: Book 2 in series Novella MM dark romance Strangers to more Hitman x innocent victim Size difference Small age gap (30 / 22) Rescue then kidnap Pet dad: cat (Carrot cake) Anxiety rep Hurt / comfort Heartstopper app Spicy times Public s*x / bathroom s*x Praise kink & mirror s*x Needy & possessive Calls him squirrel Stabby found family HFN
Books from Onley James are a special kind of crack for me. Graphic themes of violence and sex, but with wit. However, after her Necessary Evils series, newer stories are hit or miss for me. I didn't enjoy the insta-lust/love in this one, and the writing felt muddled and rushed at times. I'm also not into the needy, delicate, neurotic characters, so I was not a fan of Dakota. I liked Walker just fine, and the scenes with Cade/Tris again were fun. Definitely a novella vibe, not a long timeframe or fleshed out story.
I don’t know how Onley does it. Usually in a novella the characters feel flat and impersonal, but Onley has mastered the art of developing a character that the reader can relate to or understand in a crazy short amount of time.
I also enjoy the original plot but you’re not going to get much of the game concept if you haven’t read book 1, Killer Crush (which also features likable characters and quite a bit of action.)
Onley is an amazing writer, and this is just one more wonderful story in the long line of excellent books she's written.
Kota and Walker are both great, and despite this being a short story, you get a lot of backstory that gives each character more depth than you'd expect in a short form piece.
A contract killer, a hitchhiker with terrible judgement, and a large orange cat
When a loner trucker/contract killer meets a would-be victim mid-attempted murder, his quiet and private world gets thrown out his rig’s window. Walker makes a decisions that will change both of their lives, but is it truly a kidnapping if Kota doesn’t want to leave? I devoured this book in one sitting, and I only wish it was longer, as I wanted more Kota and Walker (and Carrot Cake the cat)!
Aaaahhhh!!! Kota and Walker are soooo stinking cute!!! I devoured this and honestly I want more of them. I neeeeeeeed it. I absolutely love their whole vibe. I can’t handle all the cuteness that they are 🥰🥰 I need like a million more books of them and their upcoming road adventures 🥰
It was very cute and fun. I loved Kota, such a cutie. Walker was also great! Cake was the best.
After reading almost all of Onley’s books, sometimes I wonder if we will ever meet a main character (bottom) who has not experienced a rough or traumatic childhood. Maybe we have and I don’t remember but I feel all her bottoms have experienced shitty childhoods.
Tropes: 🏷️Novella 🏷️Dark Romance 🏷️MM Romance 🏷️Unaliver and Kidnapped
My Review: This was short and not very sweet since it was a dark romance lol, but it was good. It was exactly what I expected from a Onley James book. If you like MM and Dark Romance I would recommend this one!
SO GOOD! Many laugh out loud moments. Kota was such a sweety that just wanted to be chosen, and Walker was a psycho that was soft only for his guy ❤️ quick read and for the length it really was a solid story and well rounded. 10 out of 10
I loved this book. 5 stars for rating, 3 for spice. These two opposites were perfect for each other. And it was funny how confused Walker was how he got in the situation but how much he didn’t want it to go away.
onley never misses! both of the books in this series are lovely and i ate them up like fudge covered oreos. they made me super happy, i cant waaait for more!
