Haggard was made a Knight Bachelor in 1912 and a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1919. He stood unsuccessfully for Parliament as a Conservative candidate for the Eastern division of Norfolk in 1895. The locality of Rider, British Columbia, was named in his memory.

Every schoolchild knows that in 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. But what about the year before that? Did anything of note happen in 1491? Well, as any reader of H. Rider Haggard's 31st novel, "Margaret," will discover, the answer is: plenty! "Margaret," which Haggard wrote from 1905-06, was initially published in London in September 1907 under the title "Fair Margaret," and here in the U.S. with the shortened title a month later. It is one of Haggard's historical fictions, but unlike some of his other historicals, such as 1911's "Red Eve," this one contains absolutely no fantasy elements to speak of, but is rather a straightforward swashbuckler, told in a full-blooded, forthright manner.
In this exciting tale, we meet Margaret Castell, the beautiful daughter of John Castell, one of London's wealthiest merchants. Margaret is engaged to Peter Brome, a gallant ex-soldier, and when she and her servant, Betty Dene, are shanghaied and kidnapped by the Spanish Marquis of Morella, who has taken a hot-blooded fancy to her, Peter and Castell embark on a quest to save them. Thus, Haggard treats us to adventures on the high seas (Peter's duel with Morella on board a sinking ship in the midst of a raging storm would easily serve as the climax of most books; here, it comes not even halfway through) and in the cities of Moorish Granada and Seville; to courtroom cases before King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella themselves; and to a daring rescue from the clutches of the Spanish Inquisition...not to mention any number of lesser conflicts, AND a jousting match to the death, again between Brome and Morella. The Marquis, it must be added, is yet another fine Haggardian villain; a complex mixture of earthiness and piety. In the pantheon of lust-crazed Haggardian nasties, I'd have to say that he is just as far gone as Samuel Rock in "Joan Haste" (1895), not quite as vicious as Swart Piet in "Swallow" (1899) or Hernando Pereira in "Marie" (1912), a bit more chivalrous than Frank Muller in "Jess" (1887), but much more dangerous than Owen Davies in "Beatrice" (1890). He's kind of like the evil Abbott Maldon in Haggard's "The Lady of Blossholme" (1909), a Christian bigot...but with a lustful side. And speaking of religion, in "Margaret," Haggard once again demonstrates that he is no anti-Semite. This charge of anti-Semitism on the part of the author has come about mainly as a result of the Jewish slimeball character Jacob Meyer in Haggard's "The Spirit of Bambatse" (1906), but in "Margaret," Haggard takes pains to show us that John Castell, a Marano Jew, is one of the most decent men of his day, and of an "ancient and honorable" race. (Haggard had even better things to say about the Jewish people in "Red Eve" and others.) Indeed, it is rather the radical Christians in this book who are shown in an evil light: the hypocrite Morella, the greedy-for-wealth Father Henriques and, of course, everyone involved in the Inquisition itself. Thus, "Margaret" is not only a thrilling adventure story, but a highly moral one, and somewhat educational, to boot. Although the book doesn't get overly bogged down in historical facts, the reader does pick up lots of interesting tidbits concerning England and Spain of the 15th century. (Who, for example, knew that aloe thorns were used by seamstresses as pins back then, or the details of the auto-da-fe death march?)
And getting back to Columbus, Haggard even manages to work the Santa Maria into his tale, for a nice touch. The author has been accused of being an occasionally careless writer, or at least a hasty one, and it must be confessed that "Margaret" does contain some slight booboos. For example, one of Castell's trading partners is named Juan Bernaldez; a few hundred pages later, he is Carlos Bernaldez. Morella's motto is said to be something on the order of "what I seek I find, and what I find I keep"; 300 pages later, his motto is said to be "what I seize I tear." But these are minor matters, and should in no way interfere with any reader's pleasure during this terrific page-turner. I might also add that the book ends most satisfactorily, with every character getting precisely what he or she deserves, and is capped off with one of the most charming scenes of any Haggard tale I've ever read (around three dozen at this point). "Margaret," one of Haggard's lesser read titles, perhaps, will certainly reward your efforts to seek it out.

This is among the most eventful books I've read. Back before radio, film, and television, books like this were apparently prime entertainment. This is like reading an action movie. There are kidnappings, duels, shipwrecks, courtroom drama, and various narrow escapes. Haggard is a better writer than one might intuitively suppose. The overall level of craftsmanship is high; Haggard describes the events clearly and presents the characters vividly. The writing, with a formal yet clear style, effectively evokes the atmosphere of late 15th century England and Spain. Anyone who says this wasn't fun hasn't read it.

বইয়ের শুরুতেই যখন বিনা বাধায় নায়ক নায়িকার মন জয় করে নেয় আর সে ব্যাপারটায় (এই যে নায়কের পছন্দ করা, বিয়ের প্রস্তাব দেয়া ইত্যাদি ইত্যাদি ব্যাপার)পরোক্ষ সায় থাকে স্বয়ং নায়িকার বাবার তখনই বুঝতে হবে অবশ্যই ঘাপলা কিছু আছে। অবশ্য সে ঘাপলার জন্য ব্রেন স্টর্মিঙের প্রয়োজন নাই। কয়েক পেজ আগালেই দেখবেন সুরসুর করে চলে আসছে গল্পের ভিলেন। যার কারণে যেই বইটা আপাতদৃষ্টিতে ৫০/৬০ পেজে শেষ হতে পারতো সেই বই কিনা নানান রকম চড়াই-উতরাই পার হয়ে শেষ হয় ৩৬৭ পেজে। 😂 অবশ্য প্রেমে বাধা না থাকলে কি আর জমে? 😛

৩★ দেখে বইটা খারাপ লেগেছে ভাবার কারণ নেই। হ্যাগার্ড এর অন্যান্য বইয়ের তুলনায় একটু কম ভালো লেগেছে কিন্তু সব মিলিয়ে বইটা খারাপ না। একটানা শেষ করার মত, বরাবরের মতই লেখকের অন্যান্য বইয়ের মত অ্যাডভেঞ্চার বেশ ভালো লেগেছে। সেবা প্রকাশনী+ সায়েম সোলায়মান এর সমন্বয়ে হ্যাগার্ডের অন্যান্য বইগুলোর মত এটার অনুবাদও দারুন।

কিছুদিন আগেই ফিনিশড পড়লাম। তার চেয়ে ভালো। কাহিনীতে বেশ উত্তেজনা আছে। তবে দশ বছরে চারটা বাচ্চা একটু বেশি হয়ে গেল! :P

Оценка ничего не значит. Книга прекрасная. В ней есть все, что нужно отличному приключенческому роману: прекрасная дама, благородный рыцарь, готовый на подвиги, путешествия и собственно подвиги в больших количествах. Проблема в том, что во мне живет крохотный карликовый Тарантино, подкормленный и взлелеянный талантами Мартина и Аберкромби. И что-то настолько он подкормился и взлелеялся, что под конец полез перечить сформировавшемуся мнению.
Вкратце, примерно так:
Я: Это отличная книга!!! Наишакрнейший приключенческий роман! И авантюры, и историчность, и романтикой приправлено. Сплошное удовольствие.
Тарантино: Эй, эй, бро, не налегай. Сюжет оригинальностью не блещет. Где-то мы все это уже видели: красивую похищенную даму, двух претендентов на одно место, и даже богатый еврей, влипающий в неприятности из-за своего б-га, тоже где-то мелькал.
Я: Ну да, на моего любимого "Айвенго" чем-то похож. Но романтика же ж! И путешествия! И персонажи!
Тарантино: Вот только про персонажей не надо. Однобокие и плоскодонные. Красивая дама - пипец красивая, нам сказали об этом десять раз, но не сказали ничего другого. А ревнивый испанец? Это вообще что за фрукт? Крутой гранд, королевских кровей, интригует направо и налево, мечтает заполучить корону, а тут бац! - увидел бабу, и все. И про корону забыл, и про деньги, и про жизнь, а там и ласты склеил. А Бетти?
Я: Не трогай Бетти! Она личностный рост демонстрирует. И находчивость.
Тарантино: Ну да, только все говорят, что она - дура, сестра говорит - дура, стражники левые говорят - дура, даже автор говорит то же самое, а она вдруг прям гением интриг оказывается: и маркиза окрутила, и земли его отобрала, да еще и всех адвокатов за пояс заткнула. Круто, но не верю, в общем.
Я (триумфально): Но зато там Испания! Альгамбрушка, Севильюшка, да еще ж сама Изабелла Кастильская! За это одно можно ж плюсов набросать!
Тарантино: Ладно-ладно, тут не поспоришь. Только в том страшном переводе тех древних времен...
Внутренний переводчик (встревая без предупреждения): Да-да!! И Кадис обозвали Кадиксом, и Квемадеро, а уж Святая эрмандада так вообще!!!
Я: Но приключения все-таки были отличные. С путешествиями, поединками, благородством и любовью до гроба - отлично же, и читается легко. И мыслей серьезных не требует.
Тарантино: Хорошо. Уломала. Мозги расслаблены, приключения удались, а теперь пойдем по Аберкромби вдарим, да?)

রাজা সপ্তম হেনরির শাসন চলছে ইংল্যান্ডে আর সমগ্র ইউরোপ জুড়ে ধর্মান্ধতা।গল্পের নাইকা মার্গারেটের বাবা ক্যাস্টেল বাচার দায়ে খৃষ্টান ধর্মে দীক্ষিত হলেও গোপনে ইহুদিই রয়ে গেছেন।ব্যবসা করে অনেক সম্পত্তির মালিক হয়েছেন তিনি।সুন্দরী মার্গারেটকে ভালোবাসে তাদের বাড়িতে আশ্রিত পিটার।সেও পিটারকে ভালোবাসে।স্পেনের রাষ্ট্রদুত অর্থাৎ গোপনে মেরেন বা রুপান্তরিত খৃষ্টানদের ব্যাপারে তথ্য নিতে আসা ধূর্ত ব্যাভিচারি ডি'আগুইলারও ভালোবেসে ফেলে মার্গারেটকে।মার্গারেটের কাছাকাছি থাকতে তার দুরের বোন বেটির সাথে ভালোবাসার অভিনয় করে।বেটির বোকামির জন্য অনেক গোপন তথ্য জেনে যায় ডি'আগুইলার।মার্গারেটের বাবা পিটারের সাথে মেয়ের বাগদান সম্পন্ন করেন।তাই ডি'আগুইলার মার্গারেটকে বিয়ের প্রস্তাব দিলে নাকোচ হয় সেটা।পিটার আর মার্গারেটের বিয়ের দিন ক্যাস্টের অসুস্থতার মিথ্যা সংবাদ দিয়ে মার্গারেট ও বেটিকে জাহাজে তুলে নেয় ডি'আগুইলার।পিটার আর ক্যাস্টের তাদের জাহাজ নিয়ে ধাওয়া করে এবং ডি'আগুইলারের জাহাজে দুজন উঠে বসে কিন্তু ঝড়ে জাহাজ ডুবি হয় কোনো ভাবে প্রাণ নিয়ে স্পেনের শহরে আসে উভয় দল।সেখানে ডি'আগুইলারের প্রাসাদে বন্দি হয় সবাই।ডি'আগুইলারের দাসীর সহায়তায় মার্গারেট আর পিটার বের হয়ে আসে আর মার্গারেট ভেবে বেটিকে বিয়ে করে ডি'আগুইলার।ভুলে এক সাধুর সৈন্যকে হত্যায় স্পেনের রাজদরবারে হাজির হতে হয় ওদের আর ডাক পরে ডি'আগুইলার আর বেটিরও।রায় হয় মার্গারেটদের পক্ষে আর পিটারের সাথে তার বিয়ে হয়।কিন্তু ক্যাস্টেলের ইহুদি পরিচয় বেরিয়ে আসে।তাকে পুরিয়ে মাড়ার আদেষ হয়।সেখান থেকে পিটার আর তার নাবিকরা মিলে তারা রক্ষা করে।এরপর দশ বছরের পরের কথা উঠে আসে।যেখানে পিটার আর মার্গারেটের চার সন্তান হয়।আর বেটির আর ডি'আগুইলারের এক ছেলে।কিন্তু মারা যায় ডি'আগুইলার।

A historical romance set during the reign of King Henry VII. Story of Peter Brome who kills a soldier of the Spanish ambassador to England. The soldier had manhandled Peter’s cousin Margaret. This brings them into contact with the powerful Marquis d'Aguilar of Spain who falls in love with Margaret and through plots and subterfuge kidnaps and takes her to Spain seeking to convince her to marry him. Margaret loves and is plighted to Peter , who with her father pursues them to Spain to get her back.
The story is full of adventure involving both Henry VII as well as Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain.

Девиз Хаггарда – все беды от женской красоты. Вернее, от изумительной женской красоты. Не всегда, но в произведении Райдера обязательно, находится девушка, которой никакая из барышень в подмётки не годится. Этого вполне достаточно, чтобы за сердце такой красавицы начиналась борьба на уровне государств. В представленном читателю случае сошлись интересы Англии и Испании. И всё бы ничего, да снова внешний блеск исходит от дочери еврейского семени. Кажется, достаточно иметь отца еврея, как героиню Райдера буквально с яслей начинают желать видеть в качестве невесты.

এডভেঞ্চার আর হেনরি রাইডার হ্যাগার্ড সমার্থক শব্দ। আঠারো শতক এর প্রেক্ষাপটে উনি যেরকম এডভেঞ্চারমূলক গল্প লিখেছেন একেকটা অসাধারণ। আর সাথে যদি সায়েম সোলায়মান ভাইয়ের অনুবাদ থাকে, তাহলে একশোতে একশো। তবে এটাকে নব্বই দিবো, আগেরগুলোর মতো অতটা জমে নি।
তবে চিরচেনা এক নায়িকা, তার পেছনে পাণিপ্রার্থীদের ছুটে চলা, মধুরেণসমাপয়েৎ... সবই আছে এতে।

I really like this book. The first time I've ever read such a book like this (all of my historical fiction books are about romance :D). I guess my curiosity to read the book that my father read long ago did a really good job here ^^
This book is not just about romance, but the main thing here is about the courage, the bravery of a man to save his beloved ones' lives, and his dignity to go against the evil man that stole his fiancee. And along the journey to save his loved ones is the wisdom of the women involving in the situation (I'm so impressed with all the women in this book, they really shown their mental strength and the ability to persuade people through speech, which showcases the true women power).
I love how the evil man is portrayed in this book, not the kind of witty, stab-people-behind-their-back kind of thing, but the one who still tried to hold some dignity and fight in an honored way. The fact that all of his wrong actions were driven by his mad love towards Margaret is also an interesting point in this book.
The only thing that kept me from being quite sure about giving this book a 5-star rating is the fact that it features many cliché dialogues (almost old-fashion. I know this book is set in the Medieval time, but somehow that's not my thing) and the way characters present themselves, that sometimes I felt like the author forgot to inject some kind of emotions to leverage the story.
I mainly admired and loved this book for its continuing actions, plot twists and plans set up, but that's not enough to completely win me over. However, it was still a very interesting, engaging, awesome read that I mostly devoured every page ^^

I mainly admired and loved this book for its continuing actions, plot twists and plans set up, but that's not enough to completely win me over. However, it was still a very interesting, engaging, awesome read that I mostly devoured every page ^^
