Arc Review.
I haven’t read many mm romances but I enjoyed this one. Very well written, I do think it was fast paced but that’s okay nothing wrong with that at all in books. I think if it was that little bit longer my rating would have been more but over all enjoyed this book and will be reading the next 😍😍

I just knew my rating was about to drop the moment Roland was talking about missing Austin and couldn't name three actual things he missed about him.
Instead, he said and I quote:
"I miss his bossiness during sex and the way he transforms into a shy snuggler immediately after. I've tried to recreate how he makes me feel by experimenting with toys, convincing myself it was just physical and entirely replaceable, but it never really works."
That's it? That's all you've got? Nothing about his laugh? His smile? His habits? His presence? His personality? Sir, be serious.
It just confirmed what I was already thinking; these two barely did anything besides have sex.
And don't even get me started on Sandra. Why did the book make her out to be the villain when she was the one who was wrong.. Justice for my girl because that didn't sit right with me.
Then there's the breakup itself. Roland and Austin honestly shouldn't have broken up in the first place, only for it to take Austin getting injured for Roland to realize he couldn't live without him. Then we got the confession and boom, the story ended. God abeg. 😭
I'll give credit where it's due though. Austin and Roland had chemistry, and I do love it when the younger one is the bossy one.
Anyways peace and love... bye.

-ARC Review-
I really liked the two main characters for this novella. Roland and Austin were both very likable and I felt their connection was genuine. The spice was goooooood! I enjoyed their dynamic from start to finish. The little jealousy bits in the middle were kinda cute even.
The only thing I didn’t like, and kept this from being a 5-star was the ex-wife Sandra. I didn’t understand her, honestly. I really thought when she found out she’d support them and maybe she kinda had a feeling it would end up that way all along. Root for them, you know? But no, she goes the opposite way and tries to blow it up and then just disappears. It felt strange to me.

This is a fun, quick, low angst read with a smooth, easy writing style that makes it fly by.
I really appreciated the diversity, since two Nigerian MMCs in a queer romance is something we don't see often. That did made this one stand out.
I also love a good dynamic switch. Watching the character you would least expect take the more dominant role is always a pleasant surprise.
I did wish I felt a stronger emotional connection between Roland and Austin. Their dynamic leaned heavily toward being purely physical. You could feel the chemistry was there, but it lacked the depth or emotional substance to make me truly invested in them. If that connection had been stronger, this would have easily been a higher rating for me.
Overall, this one was a decent enjoyable read.

I finished this book in one sitting. It’s a fast-paced, cutesy, and short romance read. I loved the Nigerian football representation and the positive vibes throughout the book.
I liked Roland’s character, but I didn’t like how he handled his gay awakening, his marriage, and the divorce. I didn’t think he was entirely fair. Another character who confused me was Sandra. She didn’t seem very consistent and came across as manipulative, although I also didn’t think the author was entirely fair to her.
I also wished there was more emotional connection between Austin and Roland. Their romance felt very physical and seemed to lack the emotional depth I was looking for.
I loved the sacrifice at the end, and I’ll definitely be reading the other books in the series. I’d recommend this if you’re looking for a short, easy MM romance with Nigerian representation.

I honestly never in a trillion years expected this story to be so wholesome, sweet, and heartwarming.
And first of all: damn it, you guys just missed making it to the World Cup! I was genuinely rooting for the team by the end of the book, which says a lot because I usually don’t care about soccer at all. 🤣
Both MMCs were incredibly lovable. Their chemistry was fantastic, and the story managed to be both adorable and seriously spicy at the same time. The balance between the emotional moments and the steam was done really well.
One thing I especially appreciated was the ending. It was so refreshing to read a romance that didn’t rely on unnecessary drama just to create tension. The relationship development felt natural, and I finished the book with a huge smile on my face.
If you’re looking for a quick, steamy, feel-good novella featuring two Nigerian footballers, a captain/goalkeeper who enjoys surrendering control to his man, and plenty of sweet moments alongside the spice, I’d definitely recommend picking this one up.

I went into Guarded Goalie with absolutely no idea what to expect because this was my first MM romance.
I honestly thought it would feel completely different from the romances I usually read, but after a few chapters I realized… romance is romance. The butterflies were still there, the tension was still there, and I found myself smiling and blushing just as much as I do with any good romance.
The story follows Roland and Austin, two Nigerian footballers brought together during the World Cup. As old misunderstandings are cleared up, they’re forced to confront feelings that have been buried for much longer than either of them expected.
One of my favorite things about this book was how easy it was to read. It’s a novella, so the pacing is naturally quick, but I never felt rushed while reading it. I picked it up expecting to read a few chapters and ended up finishing it in one sitting.
Roland and Austin had amazing chemistry. Every scene between them was fun to read, and I’ll admit… the spice definitely had me blushing more than once. 😭
I also really appreciated seeing Nigerian characters at the center of the story. It’s always nice finding romances that feel a little closer to home, and I enjoyed that aspect just as much as the romance itself.
The only reason this wasn’t a five-star read for me is that I wanted more of Roland and Austin outside of their physical relationship.
Their chemistry was never the issue… I completely believed the attraction between them. I just wanted a few more quiet moments together. Conversations, little everyday interactions, moments that let me fall in love with them as a couple beyond the incredible spice. Those emotional moments are usually what push a romance from “I really enjoyed this” to “I’m completely obsessed.”
Even so, I had a genuinely great time reading this.
It was fun, steamy, addictive, and such a great introduction to MM romance for me. If you’re looking for a quick sports romance with plenty of chemistry, lovable characters, and Nigerian representation, I’d definitely recommend giving this one a try.
I’ll absolutely be picking up the next book.

Okay so I’ll start with the things I loved in this book! The positive black (specifically Nigerian) rep, the set up was really fun and a great backdrop for pining with them being on the same football team! The spice was also good, I liked that Roland as the bigger older guy was the bottom because you don’t see that too often!
Now for the things I wasn’t a fan of; the pacing wasn’t great to me, now that’s just personal preference 100% because I prefer a slower burn but I felt like I love you came out of left field. I also felt like Roland’s “gay-awakening” could have been done better. What I mean by that is, the set up for his plot line with the struggling marriage felt more like he was maybe on the asexuality spectrum or had a low sex drive than anything else. I know it was mentioned that he’d looked at guys midway through the book but I was genuinely confused when he had an insta lust with Austin who he’d known for years through Sandra. To me it would have flowed a bit easier if Roland had an internalised homophobia to self love arc (I know the focus was on a positive uplifting story but I feel like depth was sacrificed a bit). It would have been more believable that he’d been pining over Austin the whole time or that the pining had been mutual rather than the attraction starting after the separation. I also feel like Sandra kinda fell into the ‘demonised Female character in the way of the MM couple’ trope. Her character wasn’t really consistent, she cared about Austin but then lied to Roland about his intentions? I get feelings but it’s implied she was cheating? So why lie if you’ve moved on and this is your bestie/brother? I also feel like the cheating was added in to make us as the reader dislike her so we’d feel better about Roland being an absent husband. There was a way to write Sandra in a way that avoided this archetype but I can see how as an author you’d want the readers to be on Roland’s side.
Overall I can see this book being a really positive enjoyable short read for a lot of people. It just wasn’t a great fit for me 💜

This was so fricking good! If you are looking for a short cute sports bi awaking story this is definitely the one. I must admit I was a little skeptical because I was afraid the Mc's would be involve through a cheating troupe and luckily this story didn't have any so I was ecstatic. We have our 2 main characters Roland and Austin and I might be wrong but from the description it gave chocolate wonder, caramel delight, that I'm in love with that coco. And baby I was HOOKEDDDDDDDDDD! Come on representation! Yes I love it when I see many different type of races, nationalites, and ethics group's. My heart smiles each time so big shout out to the author for that you are forever in my heart. While the story is fast paced it's still written very well. I could just picture the anxiety and fear that Roland was facing while trying to come to terms of who he is and trying to understand emotions that he is unfamiliar with. And I also could feel Roland uneasiness and longing of wanting someone but is unsure on going for it or to just stay in the shadows admiring from afar. While there where moments I wanted to pull my hair out because I was like just communicate you nuts lol the feeling never last long due to the minimal angst. These 2 were absolutely made for each other and I couldn't been even more happier when the both decided to finally give in to their desires. I also noticed the author did explain or created a picture of what football was. And I was thankful for that because where I'm from football is an entirely different sport. So I managed to continue and follow along with the story smoothly. There was a plot twist that I found adorable and was like are we getting allies wouldn't mind hearing that story as well. And one that had my mouth open was the phonecall with Sandra and Austin. Overall the story was a fun read it had plot twists,spice,and romance. Would definitely recommend to others.While I did received an advanced copy of this book all thoughts are my own. And I'm leaving this review on my own accord.

As an avid fan of Sports Romances the blurb caught my attention which made me eager to apply for this ARC.
This was my introduction to G.T. Dipe's work, as well as my first time reading a romance set with Nigerian characters. This setting offered a refreshing perspective and I was very impressed by the author’s style of writing.
While the sports romance scene has seen a flurry of books after the success of Heated Rivalry this book does carve out its unique identity.
Roland Johnson is a goalkeeper for a top English football club, while Austin Coker plays for their fierce rivals. Despite their club animosity, both are called up to represent Nigeria at the World Cup. The tension between them runs deeper than the pitch: Roland is currently separated from his wife, who happens to be Austin's best friend.
What begins as a major misunderstanding quickly shifts during the forced proximity of the tournament. As they resolve their differences, unexpected feelings spark, and Austin must confront his long-standing crush on Roland alongside intense guilt toward his best friend. As Roland struggles to accept his shifting identity, their explosive chemistry becomes impossible to ignore, forcing them to choose between loyalty and love.
The plot is unique enough to generate interest and the author keeps the interest alive with the effective pacing of the narrative alongside the high stakes of the World Cup matches.
However I felt the ex-wife’s characterization was inconsistent. Her behavior frequently oscillated between being a supportive friend to Austin and acting like a vengeful ex, which made her motivations feel a bit erratic.
In the category of Sports Romance I would rate this as a 4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I received an ARC copy from the Author and giving my honest opinion of the book.
I’d like to start with the fact that I did enjoy the book! Soccer is one of my favorite sports and I liked how the game play was incorporated into the book and not overdone. I enjoyed the fact that they were doing their staring at eachother on the field etc.
I enjoyed the spicy scenes together and how they both wanted to take care of the other’s needs. The story bloomed into something amazing and I really liked that a lot. The feelings they showed for each other at the end of the book shown through and I really liked that aspect of it.
The reason I gave less stars: Sandra. I know she was meant to be the negative person due to cheating etc,however, I was annoyed with how she acted in the end. She’s the one that told Austin to seduce Roland and made it seem she would be on board. Then randomly she’s mad about it and can’t support him? I would understand why she would be upset if he cheated in the beginning, but everything was on her. If she hadn’t been the way she was in the middle of the book (stating to seduce him because he always seemed to have eyes for him), I think I would think differently of her. But in the end, I was just super annoyed about it.
Another aspect I was bummed about: the ending. I know there was an extra chapter to discuss with each other but I felt it was very abrupt. The ending seemed like a HFN without knowing if it would continue. I was able to get the bonus chapter but I felt the story just ended super abruptly.
Overall, I did enjoy the book and would recommend it! There is a little bit of everything with the sports, pining, and spicy scenes with medium angst (I would say medium due to Sandra going from being on board to not). Check this book out if you like the above!

I enjoyed the spicy scenes together and how they both wanted to take care of the other’s needs. The story bloomed into something amazing and I really liked that a lot. The feelings they showed for each other at the end of the book shown through and I really liked that aspect of it.
The reason I gave less stars: Sandra. I know she was meant to be the negative person due to cheating etc,however, I was annoyed with how she acted in the end. She’s the one that told Austin to seduce Roland and made it seem she would be on board. Then randomly she’s mad about it and can’t support him? I would understand why she would be upset if he cheated in the beginning, but everything was on her. If she hadn’t been the way she was in the middle of the book (stating to seduce him because he always seemed to have eyes for him), I think I would think differently of her. But in the end, I was just super annoyed about it.
Another aspect I was bummed about: the ending. I know there was an extra chapter to discuss with each other but I felt it was very abrupt. The ending seemed like a HFN without knowing if it would continue. I was able to get the bonus chapter but I felt the story just ended super abruptly.
Overall, I did enjoy the book and would recommend it! There is a little bit of everything with the sports, pining, and spicy scenes with medium angst (I would say medium due to Sandra going from being on board to not). Check this book out if you like the above!

You can feel their desperation for each other. Their willingness to sacrifice themselves for the other if necessary. This novella was the perfect palate cleanser for me between two heavier novels. It wasn’t a complex, multi-layered story, I didn’t have to brace myself for unexpected twists, and I certainly wasn’t expecting anything irreparable to happen between the two protagonists.
Footballer Roland’s brief marriage to Sarah falls apart, so he begins the World Cup as a newly single man—alongside Austin, who is there as his teammate. Roland accepts his newfound attraction to a man ten years younger than himself with surprisingly little inner turmoil. For Austin, however, those feelings are nothing new; he has been attracted to Roland for years. He simply never acted on it because Roland’s ex-wife is his best friend.
From this, it’s easy to guess what awaits the reader: a light and romantic MM story featuring two Nigerian protagonists, plenty of steamy scenes, and, of course, football.
I didn’t see enough of Sarah to grow fond of her—in fact, from Roland’s perspective, I found her rather obnoxious.
Roland and Austin are both very likable characters, though the novella’s length didn’t allow me to become deeply attached to them. Even so, I have no complaints. The story was highly enjoyable, never tried to be more than what the blurb promised, and there were several moments when I found myself melting with a huge smile on my face. I always enjoy reading stories that center on healthy relationships between Black couples, and Austin and Roland's story was such a welcome change of pace from many of the books I typically read. This low-angst romance follows two professional footballers as Roland goes through a queer awakening and begins to explore feelings he never expected to have.
I liked how the book addressed the realities and challenges of being queer in Nigeria without making the story feel overwhelmingly heavy. Roland's concerns about his sexuality and future were handled thoughtfully, and the conversations surrounding those topics felt honest and grounded. Even when I worried the story might take a more painful turn, everything came together well, delivering a well-earned HEA.
The romance itself was sweet, engaging, and developed genuinely from admiration and attraction into something deeper. I also liked that the sports element enhanced the story without completely dominating the relationship. And once the spice started, it definitely didn't stop. I especially enjoyed the reversal of some common romance dynamics, with the more feminine, long-haired MMC taking the dominant role while his larger, muscular partner was completely devoted to him in every way.
Overall, this was a fun, spicy, and heartfelt read with great representation, lovable characters, and an easy-to-root-for relationship. I'm definitely excited to continue the series.

I liked the idea behind this book, and the writing style was good. Unfortunately, otherwise it was a disaster.
I like sports romances, and I like sports, and I like my sports romances to be sports-heavy - and by this I mean I actually want it to explore sports-related issues alongside the romance. Here, they were at a World Cup, and you'd think that would be meaningful to the characters, but it was completely overshadowed by the romance. (Though I did like how the game results played out - phew.)
The relationship wasn't particularly interesting. I didn't feel like there was anything between them besides sex.
Chapter 20... look, everything about chapter 20 was just nope. And then the way it all played out... it was not a satisfying way to resolve relationship issues.
Let's talk about the other characters. There were only two. Michael: we know he's going to be a character in a future book because this one talked about his relationship woes and also how hot he is. It was not subtle. Please be more subtle. The other other character was Sandra. Words cannot express how much I disliked what they did with her. Not just because she was the only female character (though also this, because this), but because she was one MC's (ex-)wife and the other MC's best friend. Why did they both like her if she was like this?
I really wish more time/effort had gone into making this a better book.

Overall this was an enjoyable, lower angst, well written sports romance novella. This is a new to me author and I really loved our two MC's - Roland and Austin. They have known each other for a bit - Austin is Roland's ex wife's best childhood friend - plus they are teammate on the Nigerian National Team. Roland's bi/gay awakening was a beautiful journey to watch and Austin's patience and understanding was the perfect counterpoint to that part of the storyline. The author addressed some heavier topics - specifically around being Nigerian and gay - in a way that was very real without being the whole story. One of my favorite micro tropes is the older, bigger guy who's the inexperienced/bottom and G.T. wrote some great spice around this trope! I felt that when we first met Roland that he was more on the asexual spectrum and felt the way his desire/drive was written wasn't really for me. And Roland's ex - Sandra really didn't need to be written as the villain - we would have been on Roland's side anyway. Great read to pick up if you're looking for World Cup reads to go along with the World Cup excitement this summer! I can't wait to read more from G.T. and I'm ever thankful for the opportunity to ARC read.

The book followed Roland a Goalie for the Nigerian National football team based in the World Cup and his ex wife to be’s male best friend Austin who is also a player for the same team. The spice is delicious the story was fun!
I loved both characters and found them extremely likeable. I was rooting for them all the way. I enjoyed the spice & their connection. It enjoyed the book following a different theme that I hadn’t read before.
I feel like the difficulties facing two men from Nigeria falling in love was brought up but glossed over. I think it would have been a really good story point.
As with Novellas the story between the two moved very quickly. I felt like the book had a premise for a really good full length book and the author could have done more with it.
I also don’t know much about football but felt like the way the games and locations were didn’t make sense.. not sure how they ended up in Sheffield when they were playing in the World Cup but maybe that’s just me 😂

This book had so much potential which is why I even rated it this high. I liked Roland as a character who had been struggling with sexual aspect of his relationship for a while and how it affects his marriage. Meanwhile, Austin’s admiration for Roland was okay but it kind of bled into a weird place for me. First of all, the age gap was hmm because I couldn’t see what the two of them would be talking about. The book being so short made the relationship fall flat to me because I don’t get to see them getting to know each other, we are told this by the author. The only parts are their physical and sexual attraction but most importantly their spice scenes. Them falling in love also felt so fast to me, like I could probably understand Austin because he had admired Roland for a long time but wow. It all felt too much and so dramatic with retiring to be with Austin. I wasn’t attached emotionally to that for it to feel empowering or impactful but I do feel that if the book was longer, their relationship would have been explored better.

Was lucky enough to become an ARC Reader for 'Blurred Boundaries' and was offered a chance to read 'Guarded Goalie' first. So glad I did. What a great novella. This is pretty short, so very easy to devour - almost did it in one sitting but sadly my eyes said sleep time.
Loved the story of Roland and Austin, two Nigerian soccer players who get it on during the World Cup and end up falling in love - seems timely with the World Cup on right now.
Roland is the older legend, captain of their team and goalie. He has just broken up from his marriage, his wife citing their lack of passion. Her best friend is Austin, a bisexual younger player who has always idolised Roland, and had a secret crush.
I really enjoyed both characters and the relationship developing between the pair. It was quite steamy and the spicy scenes were wonderfully written. This is a great book that I thoroughly enjoyed, now I am excited to start 'Blurred Boundaries'.

Guarded Goalie was a sweet, quick read with characters I genuinely enjoyed spending time with. Despite its shorter length, G.T. DÍPÈ did a great job making the characters feel like real people instead of simply moving them from one plot point to the next.
My biggest complaint is that I wanted more of it. Another 20–50 pages would have given the relationship and emotional moments a little more room to breathe, and I think I would've felt even more invested in the outcome.
That said, the story had a lot of heart (even if the manipulative, soon-to-be-ex wife had me wanting to throw hands), and I walked away wishing I'd had just a little more time with these characters.

Getting to read this book as an ARC, and reading this book from G.T. Dípè as a first-time reader, I really loved the story of Roland and Austin. Both of our MCs play football (soccer) for the World Cup, but once that is over, they go back to their home teams. But while playing for the World Cup, they have romance for this time only. When Roland first confronts Austin in the hotel room, he really admires and looks at Austin close up, and that makes him think of doing things with him and see how beautiful he is. Austin has been crushing on Roland for years and looks up to him as well, since there is an age gap as well between the two. But the spice between these two?! Off the charts! And who would have thought that the one would be a total bottom. hehe.
Overall, this was a quick, fun, and really lovely read.
