The imagery throughout the poem was beautifully disturbing as it describes the impacts of the Spanish Civil War on Madrid. In studying Spanish culture in Spain, Argentina, Chile, and Mexico, my class and I have been able to cross examine Spanish government and several civil wars/revolutions in order to understand the writer's purpose for writing their stories. I would read this poem again as it has depth of meaning and displays Neruda's view of the Civil War and the impact it had on his life in terms of losing his home and friends.
