This book is written in the third person which threw me off a little until I settled into the story. Its just been a little while since I read a third person story.

I liked how unusual the story was with its mix of dark erotica and paranormal. An interesting take on magic and witches, a few good twists I couldnt have seen coming and interesting characters.

I enjoyed seeing contrast between Heather and her family, her strong sense of morality versus the pressure of familial expectations. I loved how true to herself she remainrd throughout, not just morally but on an emotional level as well. Her relationship with Rick was deep and multilayered, I lovedthe trust and bond between them, it was sensual, sexy and honest.

The plot was gripping, it was fast paced and my heart was racing as I reached the climax of the story. The darkly seductive edge teased to begin with before it fell over the precipice taking me with it. An exciting read from the temptress Jennifer Bene.

Upon finishing my first Jennifer Bene book I was desperate for more and found myself looking at the other Jennifer Bene stories available. My attention was instantly pulled towards The Rite. It sounded like the kind of story I would love – dark and twisted, with a paranormal edge – so it should come as no surprise to find out I devoured The Rite.

The Rite offers us a dark paranormal story unlike any I’ve read before, giving us something that has us hooked throughout. With unexpected elements, this one will have you turning the pages to see how everything comes together. With magic, entertaining characters, darkness, and steam, this one hooks you on so many levels.

In fact, the biggest disappointment is that this was a short story rather than a full-length novel. I would have loved to have slipped even deeper into the world, to find out even more about the darkness and the other characters. For a short read, this one hit all the right spots – and if another story comes out connected through the characters, I’ll happily devour it to get that extra bit I want.

Without a doubt, The Rite hit the right spots.

Heathers family are witches and she has to find a man kill them and she gets her powers. Heather doesn’t want to do it but when her cousin tells her it’s life or death Heather has no choice right? Meeting Neil might be the perfect opportunity he is ex military and by himself. But can Heather live with it? And maybe things aren’t what they seem. A good paranormal book that kept me waiting more! I love Rick and Heather! Very hot! 5/5 stars

This was a pretty quick read for me, I read it in one sitting. I loved it.

It started out, Heather and her cousin discussing Heather’s powers that she has yet to tap into. Because with these powers, comes a sacrifice. And Heather just has too big of a heart to do that. She doesn’t want to sentence anyone to death.

But the choice is no longer in her hands.

It’s do or die.
Literally.

While Heather has a man, Rick, whom she was seeing but cut it off due to her crazy family, she meets up with him again just to forget everything for one night.

It’s a night of passion. But also the night before her ultimate sacrifice.

By the way, you can totally tell that Heather is into Rick. He’s a nice man, huge dick, hot in bed, but she didn’t want to condemn him to death because of her family. I found myself rooting for these two, but wasn’t sure where the “main” male character fit in.

Enter Neil, an ex Army man that Heather meets at the speed dating event, where she is supposed to do her weird witchy stuff and then fuck him, basically.

Super cool. Sounds right up my alley.

Only, Heather encounters some unexpected problems with Rick and is completely blind sided.

Hell, I was blind sided.

Jennifer tricked me with this one. I honestly wasn’t sure where it was going and I LOVED that. I love curveballs and I love not knowing how the book is going to end.

Jennifer did an amazing job writing paranormal. Everything was explained wonderfully. Would I call this book dark? Not technically, there is one part that I suppose could be considered dark.

But, then again my version of dark and someone else’s are two very different things.

Either way, I loved this book and I’m not at all surprised by that. I’ve made it known that I adore Jennifer Bene. Her books are fucking amazing, every single time.

This novel – Deviant Attractions - is three previously released stories combined into one boxset book for the current release. I had only read one of the stories prior to picking up this book (The Rite), and oddly enough that story remains my favorite out of all of them. For this novel there is a bonus story added that is actually one of the best pieces next to The Rite in the lot; more on that later. All in all, this is a fun novel to read, and yet at the same time I think it is the book I would put at the bottom of the list of everything that I have read by the author so far. It is not that the stories are bad; far from it. But when compared to her other novels, these stories, with the exception of The Rite, just have certain aspects in each that are lacking when compared to the depth of her other works. If you have read novels by this author such as Fae, or any of the Thalia series, or Corrupt Desires, you’ll find some flashes of those novels here (and some of the trademark passionate sex scenes), but you may find that none of these stories resonate the same as her other works.

The first story in the book is The Invitation. This story is a sweet little BDSM discovery romance based around a young woman (Cara) who discovers something new about her sexuality when she becomes caught up into a ‘invitation only’ group that her roommate draws her into. The ‘club’ she becomes involved with introduces her to the world of BDSM, where Cara, our heroine, is introduced to submission by a very perceptive (and sensuous Dominate) named Saif. As the novel progresses so does Cara, through levels of ‘play’ that she is introduced to while in this group. Cara’s mentor through this is Saif, and he guides her as she discovers all that she desires about being submissive, and what she is willing to do that she never thought herself capable of before.

The conceit of this novel is really simple. It is nothing more than a story of sexual awakening. It’s difficult to try and breathe more into it than that, because, at least to this reader, there simply isn’t much else here. Not that this makes it a bad story. It isn’t. But, unlike many of the other stories that I’ve read by this author, this story simply doesn’t have much depth to it. It has some very hot scenes, make no mistake. And if that is what you are after, this story will certainly please. However, I have come to expect (and love) the depth of characterization that Ms. Bene creates with her protagonists (and antagonists), and this story does, in comparison to others she’s written, fall short in that regard. Cara is a sweet young woman, and it is mildly interesting to hear her voice as she breaks out of her staid world into something more provocative, but…. beyond the “Oooo! I’ve discovered I like being submissive and BDSM sex!” there isn’t much that draws us to her. In the end I was left going “Well, how nice for her. But… meh.” As for her mentor, Saif…. I have some personal reasons which have nothing to do with the quality of the story or writing for why I disliked the character (although I found it hilarious that in the bonus story a portion of those reasons was addressed in passing), so I could not find myself engaged with his character at all. He embodies certain traits in Dom’s that I dislike in the real world lifestyle, and for that I was quite often either rolling my eyes, or grimacing at his words and actions. I know there are those who will eat this character up, and for that I say, more power to you. For this reader…. no.

The one bonus story (Ben’s Day) attached to this box set is a story set in the same timeframe and locale as The Invitation, and though it is only a short bonus story added for this box set, it is actually my second favorite story in this novel overall. The plot is simple; Ben is interacting with his partner (Saif, from The Invitation), and in doing so he notices that the assistant that they employ is ‘frustrated’. The woman, Krista, had once been involved in the club, seguing into becoming a more traditional employee. In doing so, she started to be shut out of the very reason she came into both Ben and Saif’s orbit (the club activities and play), and Ben comes to realize this. Once he realizes this, he then sets about making things right for her.

The reason I liked this story is that despite its rather simple premise, the characters here seem much more rounded out than in The Invitation. The motivations for their actions seems more believable, and grounded in backstory which helps you understand both Ben and Krista on a more personal level, than the characterizations in the previous story. I will also admit to a personal bias here which I have no doubt comes into play; there is a scene in which Ben discusses with Krista his reasoning for doing what they are doing, and he refers to Saif as “Mr. Dramatic…” When I read that line, I burst out laughing. It was the perfect description for the type of Dom that Saif is, when compared to Ben. Saif is what I’ve always referred to as a Drama-Dom. The dark brooding Dom who makes the TPE seem like some sort of dark binding of a submissive to a Master. Glowering eyes, serious, moody voice, never cracking a smile, and God forbid a joke. I know there are those who love the type. This reader is not one of them, whether it be in literature, or outside of the written word. The interaction between Ben and Krista is so much more tender, engaging, and, IMHO, downright passionate than any of Saif’s brooding, deep-voiced, dark commanding words and actions. Again, take all that with the requisite grain of salt; it is truly a personal bias coming into play here, but that one line and exchange, along with the interplay between Krista and Ben, did make me love this story so much more than the first one.

The next story is Reunited. This story runs a very close second to Ben’s Day in terms of enjoyment, and it is a much longer story than that one. It is a ‘high school reunion reunites lovers’ story, of which I have read before. Megan meets up at her ten year reunion with her old boyfriend Eric, and then with Colby, a friend for whom she (and much of the other females from school) had an attraction to. The premise here is pretty simple, if not somewhat formulaic; they three come together at the reunion, mutual attraction is ignited, and some very hot, steamy sex ensues. Honestly, there is not a lot NOT to like about this story. And more so than The Invitation, there is enough character development provided as the three characters come together that you feel invested in each of them, and watching how things unfold pulls you along. All three main characters; Megan, Eric, and Colby are just fun likeable people who come together at the reunion, and reconnect in ways that go beyond just simple reminiscence and flirtations. The feelings that each discover and come to terms with over the course of the evening are sweet to watch unfold, and there are plenty of “D’awwww!” moments. Equally intriguing is the choice by the author to go further than just the one night. The story continues on to follow up with what happens with all three of them after they leave the reunion in the following months and years. The descriptions in that portion of the story is as much endearing as the actual night of the reunion. I was as taken in by how the three come together and start a life together as I was with their original night of passion. It was touching, captivating, and the perfect end to their story.

The final story in this set is The Rite. This was the story I had read previously when it was a stand-alone novel, and this is my favorite by far out of every one in the set. This is a much more nuanced and in-depth story than any other in the novel. Heather, the protagonist, belongs to a coven of withes known as the Pritchett witches. She has come of age where she is expected to perform a dark rite to gain her powers as a witch. For her own reasons she has no desire to, and this brings her into conflict with her family. To avoid being ‘cast away’, she determines to go through with the rite, but in making the necessary arrangements she finds herself caught up in another unexpected turn of events where her family’s past catches up with her in a very terrible way.

This is truly the style of story I have come to expect from Ms. Bene. There is some very well built backstory and world-building here, and the quality of those elements to this story draw you so deeply into the conflict that Heather finds herself caught up in. And Heather herself is much more the strong female protagonist that Ms. Bene excels at writing than the others in this set, Krista and Megan notwithstanding. Heather knows she is being torn between her own value system, and that of her family, and though she struggles to do everything she can to try and balance it out, the real tension here is that she knows ultimately she will have to make a very fateful decision that is going to cost someone their life. Without going into much ‘spoilery’ detail, it is that tension, and how Heather ultimately deals with and overcomes it, is what just pulls the reader in so wonderfully. As mentioned, I had read this story before, and this time reading it a second time when placed in the series of the others mentioned here, I caught myself thinking “Now THIS is the story I was expecting.” Again, this is not to say the other stories were ‘bad’, but they certainly did not have the same impact that The Rite did, and it is why I will say, if you read no other story from this box set, at least read this one. It is pure Jennifer Bene, and so you know it is going to be good.

I’ve mentioned it before in this review, but I’ll say it again; of all the novels I have read from this author, I would have to place this one as my least favorite so far. Again, to reiterate: that does NOT mean it is bad. It is only because The Invitation felt a little lacking in the details and character building that I’ve come to expect for the author, more than anything else, that this review comes with that caveat. The Reunion, while sweet and simple, also did not have the same impactful nature as this author has so clearly shown in her other novels that she is capable of. I would best describe this box set as a good starter book into the library of Ms. Bene’s works, or perhaps as a light beach read. The stories are - The Rite being the exception - light, fun, sweet, and enjoyable, but if you’ve read her other novels before coming to this one, don’t be too disappointed if the ‘oomph’ is just not there.

This book had some very unexpected twists and I loved it!

Being part of the Pritchett family isn't easy for Heather. Especially when she is the last one to compete the Rite and gain her magic. That's right, the Pritchetts are a coven of witches and to be able to use her magic Heather must choose a man to sacrifice to Herja, their Goddess. If she can entice a man to sleep with her and perform the ritual, Herja will take his life in exchange for her power. But when Heather finally decides it's time and chooses a man, things take a very dark and unexpected turn.

I thought this book was very original and well written and I would highly recommend it.

I loved this book soo so so much. Of all of Jennifer Bene's glorious books, I think this one is my favorite. While it originally appeared as a part of an anthology, it's been released with a delicious extended ending, and IS SO WORTH THE BUY. I cannot state this enough—BUY THIS BOOK. It may be a short read, but it's sweet, and powerful, and has a beautiful, unexpected twist. I'm in love with Heather's feisty spirit, the dark, magical world she lives in, and the amazing Madam Jennifer Bene for sharing her talent with us.

Thank you so much, Jennifer. I can't wait for whatever glorious ride you'll take me on next.

The Rite was such a great story by Jennifer Bene!
I loved the magic combined with the sexual tension release that the character receives several times in this book.
The idea of magical beings, and BDSM mixed together, is such a delicious combination.

A very unusual story and one that stole my heart with its unexpected beauty

This was a captivating story with several plot strands that wove together into one amazing tapestry. There is the moral dilemma plot, the nasty family plot, the BDSM and keeping secrets plot, just to mention a few.

I'm a huge JB fan and love paranormal/fantasy work, so when I read the blurb not only did I think it sounded good, but I wondered just what I was in for. Well let me tell you that I was 'in for' a story that, despite a scene of non-con, overall gave me the warm fuzzies.

Heather is an almost-witch with a kind heart, who must condemn a male to death in order to gain her powers. Powers that may well corrupt and change her into someone else. She's quite happy as she is, thank you very much, but her "family" give her a no-win ultimatum. Can Heather actually go through with The Rite and bring about the death of an innocent man?

The book is written in the third person but from Heather's perspective, so we very quickly get to see what a genuinely decent person she is. Whilst she battled with her decisions and found herself guilty of being selfish, I still saw a strong woman forced into a situation that had no good outcome possible. The sheer fact that she cared and felt so troubled, points to a good heart. I loved her personality, her wonderful snarky humour and her gritty determination.

Because of her family, Heather never gets too close to any man. Nor does she allow her relatives to get a sniff of them. Not since that close call with the boy from college. Neil, or should I say number 19, is the man she meets at a speed dating event. He is charming, sweet and determined to take her out on a date. Then there is Rick, the man and Dom who fills her every need but who she can't have. Not when there are rules about the men that can join the family. We got to know both of these men through their words and actions. I loved how Rick combined some very gentle qualities, being almost shy at times, yet was still a very believable Dom.

There are some amazingly hot BDSM scenes, a dark, non-consent scene, some amazingly unexpected plot twists and some very just desserts. These all came together to form a book that I really enjoyed and which held my attention from the very first page. Even if you're not a huge fan of paranormal I do think you could still enjoy this. Particularly since it has well rounded characters, a good plot and excellent writing.

Holy wow!! I loved this book from page one. It was a fairly short read for me, just over an hour, but most definitely a page turner.
Powerful not only through the words in the page, but radiating through the supporting cast of characters, and through Heather, the main female character. She has a strict code of morals she's stuck to against her family's peer pressure which a lot of people might be able to identify with, although perhaps not with the same ramifications.
The addition of Rick and Neil (this is NOT a menage), two male characters who both play vitally important roles within the story and within Heather's life, are both attractive and intriguing. This book does have some exceptional BDSM scenes, just as fair warning, but fit very well within the plot, they're not just thrown in as a distraction.
I loved the portrayal of Herja, in the short scenes she appeared - the quintessential powerful woman.
One of my reading highlights of the year; I would highly recommend to any paranormal fans who like their sex scenes hot and their storylines twisted!

Although this is a new genre for me, and I was a little reluctant to read a story about a witch, I found this tale quite gripping. Our witch is named Heather, and she is faced with a really horrible choice – her death or that of another. I could not imagine how such a dark, paranormal plot would play out.

Due to her excellent writing, Jennifer Bene’s story quickly grabbed my attention and did not let go. At times my own emotions actually mirrored the apprehension of this distraught witch. At one point, when Heather needed to find an outlet for her anxiety, I was more than surprised to find her on a Dom’s doorstep. Their BDSM interaction was intense. But, visiting this man, whom she had come to care for greatly, reduced her tension and mine, at least for a while. Then, things got really dark and frightening. But, as always, leave it to Ms. Bene to tie together all the loose ends and bring the story to a satisfactory conclusion.

For me this was a well-written, intense, anxiety ridden, “Karma is a Biotch,” HEA, paranormal romance! You cannot go wrong by reading it.

Oh, this was just what I needed! It had magic, crazy relatives, hot guys, hotter sex, and was a quick afternoon read. I am always blown away at the diversity in Ms. Bene's writing. Each of her stories is so different from the others. There is no formula (Thank-you!) other than they will be dark. I love that every time I pick up one of her books I am sucked into another time and place. She has a way of not just bringing her characters to life, but of making you become that character. The emotions, motives, and thoughts are all there for you to experience. It is one of my favorite things about her as an author and even though this story is a shorter one the experience was the same.

Without restating the blurb, or giving away the story-line, I will only tell you that the characters are amazing, the romance is dark and delicious, and I could have spent a lot more time with Heather and her crazy family.

The Rite is a very unique and interesting story.
I’ve never read a PNR with this kind of theme involved.
I thought it was fantastic.
I loved Heather.
I thought she was a strong character with morals and ethics despite her family.
She stayed true to herself.
Omg Rick what’s not to love about him!
Their relationship is wonderful.
Yet complex because of what’s expected of Heather.
I liked seeing that despite her families ultimatum and what they would do to her,she still was able to trust in Rick.
Ms. Bene did an outstanding job mixing PNR and BDSM.
It was gripping and sexy.
The twists and turns kept me engaged and wanting to do how it was going to end because there was no way to predict the outcome.
I highly recommend The Rite to those who enjoy PNR and to anyone who would like to read a good book and get away from reality for a bit.

WOW! I am not sure what I was expecting, but just WOW!!! I was pulled in right away by the premise. Then my stomach was on edge thinking about how could this possibly end well?? Poor Heather!?! How would Ms. Bene possibly resolve this in any sot of way that didn't end in death and general magical ugliness? I stayed sucked in, on the edge of my couch, to the last word. And of course there is all the yummy sexiness you expect from Ms. Bene. Seriously, one-click now. You won't be disappointed. (I read this book via Kindle Unlimited.)

I wasn’t expecting so many things about this book! I'm generally not a reader of this genre but I loved it so much. The writing flowed beautifully, the plot twisted (I thought I had things worked out, but no, surprise!), and the characters were diverse and well-developed. To me, it started slowly but once the pace picked up, it stayed there. I enjoy the author’s smooth, flowing writing style. A great read, with love, action, comedy, and otherworldly elements.

I received a copy of this book. My honest review is voluntarily provided

Heather is an almost witch from a family of witches. She has to go through a certain rite in order to get her full powers. For that, she needs a man and she doesn't have one. Her family urges her to just find one, which a cousin urging her to go to a speed dating session to find the perfect man. That's what Heather does. That's when the problems start.

Nice BDSM, fun paranormal. Hits several good points on that. It's a nice quick read, and the twists are very fun.

I started reading this story a while ago and then stopped as life intervened and picked it back up this evening and I’m so glad I did. This story was absolutely amazing. I don’t think there was a single part to the story that I didn’t enjoy. From the Rite to the Valkyrie to Rick (swoons). This story begins on a slightly dark note, dips way down, and then gradually builds into something that’s light with laugh out loud moments and the happily ever after is so sweet, I’m still smiling.

Two of my favorite romances, paranormal and dark. I already knew that I loved Jennifer’s dark romance and now I know that she does paranormal just as well. The best PNR are the ones that don’t allow the paranormal aspects to take center stage, yeah sure there are witches but that is not what the story really centers around. I love Jennifer’s writing and I have become a huge fan. Can’t wait to discover more of her stories!

Will Heather be able to avoid the rite
Jennifer is one of my top 10 authors and she did not disappoint with her main characters’ struggle with finding their happiness in a relationship. Heather is being forced to complete her rite to become a witch, but spends one last night with Rick for a distraction. The plot twist in the story on the rite had me eagerly swiping pages to see what happens. But will Heather ever her happily ever after? You have to read to find out!

Wow. I enjoyed this book so much...Heather definitely did not want to complete The Rite. Her family is a trip! There was some great chemistry when she was with Rick, amazingly hot BDSM scenes, a dark, non-consent scene, and some amazingly unexpected plot twists and drama. This one kept me entertained from beginning to end!

This one by Jennifer Bene has a paranormal edge to it but that certainly didn't detract from the sexy tale for me, despite not usually being something I would read. That being said, Heather's tale is sinfully sexy and the dark, paranormal element simply adds to the story and how it all plays out to a very satisfying conclusion - I loved it!

This was a fun book. There was one dark part but it did not detract from the lightheartedness of the rest of the book. There was humour, super hot sex, BDSM,witches and warlocks and a love story. Heather and Rick were a wonderful couple and even though one was a witch and one wasn’t, tolerance and love made it work. A joy to read.

Holy.Smokes. Different than many of her other works but still enjoyable. My magic side loved reading a book with witchcraft. Add in this author's fantastic BDSM and the story got even better. I just wanted it more fleshed out because there was so much more potential.
