I opened Shielded and immediately felt like Thea Wells had leaned over the page and whispered, “Brace yourself, babe,” which usually means emotional carnage is incoming — except this time the chaos arrived wearing a lab coat and narrating its feelings like a clinical case file. The book tells you the emotions, but sweetheart… it doesn’t always make you feel them.
The hero?
Sweetheart, he is weaponised protectiveness with a side of emotional recklessness, but delivered through a lens that sometimes feels like he’s reading his own trauma off a teleprompter.
He’s giving:
“I will throw myself into danger repeatedly because you looked sad once.”
But the way it’s written?
It’s almost emotionally stunted — like he’s experiencing devotion in bullet points instead of heartbeats.
Every scene feels one heartbeat away from a catastrophically romantic decision that absolutely does not appear on any safety checklist… but the emotional punch doesn’t always land.
The heroine is guarded, traumatised, and exhausted by life’s nonsense — until he shows up with that feral devotion and suddenly she’s remembering what hope feels like.
She’s giving:
“I don’t trust anyone… except apparently you, which is inconvenient and rude.”
But again, the delivery sometimes feels like she’s reporting her feelings rather than drowning in them.
It’s emotionally muted in places where it should have been ripping your heart out by the roots.
The tension?
Hot, heavy, and occasionally unhinged.
It’s that slow‑burn‑but‑also‑explosive vibe where every touch feels like a confession and every argument feels like foreplay with trauma seasoning — but the emotional beats sometimes skim instead of stab.
It’s giving:
“Here is the feeling you should be experiencing,”
instead of actually dragging you into the wreckage.
And here’s where the 3 stars settle in:
Some pacing wobbles.
A few emotional beats feel like they were written from a distance.
Moments that should have gutted you instead feel like someone describing a gutting.
The intensity spikes so sharply you need to hydrate, but the emotional payoff doesn’t always follow.
Still, the vibes?
Deliciously messy.
Protective hero.
Trauma healing.
Danger curling around desire.
That signature Thea Wells “I’m going to emotionally suplex you and call it character development” energy — even if the suplex occasionally feels like it was performed behind a frosted glass wall.
A dark, protective, emotionally tangled romance where devotion meets danger, trauma meets tenderness, and two beautifully broken people try to build something fierce in the middle of the wreckage — even if the emotional delivery sometimes forgets to turn the lights on.

Needs editing. DNF…
When I read a book, I read it with my whole heart. I remember things. For instance, Bianca insisted that Eden go to dinner with a blind date. Bianca KNEW who the blind date was for Eden. It absolutely baffles my mind when after Eden wakes from surgery, Bianca bursts in and announces Holden as her brother; but Eden says I didn’t tell her we already met. Well duh Eden, she knows, she set you up on the blind date. On another note, how did Bianca even know Eden was in the hospital?! There was no one on her emergency list. So Holden had to have informed Bianca. See it is books like this that make me jittery on reading new authors.
Read your own stories, authors! Just like you would do when writing a short story in an English lit class.

0 stars. DNF. TW for domestic violence. 0 spice, even their kisses aren't described. I suspect this is AI written or at least used to produce this. The writing style is very similar to others that are suspect. Repetitive phrasing including almost verbatim. Same cover model in both books which were published in the same month. The medical info is good (AI can be useful I guess). Only one written review (5 stars naturally) out of 22 ratings. Endless pages of 'no human wrote this' narration, and just boring, "The stove light was still on." Get used to this metaphor; it's used a lot.
The writing style is detached and emotionless. This is to be sure we realize that the doctor, Holden, is detached and emotionless. It's repetitive; we are reminded over and over how he has lived alone for eight years (no one left a light on for me, no one left a plate of food). Eden is also emotionless because that's how she deals with the trauma she's endured. There's zero angst. We barely know what Eden is thinking let alone Holden. He only thinks of surgery and his research data.
His annoying sister, Bianca and also Eden's BFF, sets them up on a blind date. He could barely be interested enough to respond in more than one or two syllable answers, when he did speak. Eden is two months out of a two-year abusive relationship. (Girl, take some time to heal and be safe before letting Bianca push you into dating.)
That very night he's called to the ER for a trauma victim. He sees a badly beaten female. The only way he recognizes Eden, his date from earlier, is from the dress she wore. Before she goes under anesthesia, she tells him it was her ex. She wakes up 2 days later. Her ex tries to get to her; Holden shuts him down. They briefly talk and conclude she has nowhere else to go so he tells her she is moving in with him. Now his sterile existence is disrupted by having her there although they barely talk. SOME talking begins about 23% but only because his sister volunteered him to help with wedding planning (that makes no sense except she's still matchmaking).
She never talked to the police which seems odd to me. She did file a restraining order. One week later she's up and working on her wedding planning business. Fast recovery.
So now they live together. He gets the flu and spends the entire 3 or 4 days sleeping on the sofa instead of a perfectly good bed. Who does that? She of course nurses him. Somehow they are just now living together. She does something incredibly stupid. They kiss. She wakes up the morning after in his bed. The conflict is his sister's wedding vs his career defining research project. I finally couldn't read anymore, so DNF.

It needed an editor.
The sister of the MMC sets the main characters up on blind date and then later they act like they haven’t met in front of her (when they clearly both texted with the sister after their date). Also, how did she even find out that the FMC was in the hospital if it wasn’t from her brother.
The wedding is supposed to be for 600 guests, a point made several times when hiring the caterer and looking for a venue, but on the day of the wedding it’s only 300 guests (and 300 is mentioned an abundance of times during those chapters).
Also, the Langston Estate was once called the Langford Estate. Langford was the name of the MMC’s boss.
MMC has to choose between presenting his paper with a colleague or walking his sister down the aisle, because he can’t be in two places. However, the brother nearly misses the ceremony (for reasons unknown) and yet the colleague somehow was able to make it there - doesn’t make sense.
The colleague sees something/someone at the end of the ceremony - which is never brought up again - assumed it was the FMC’s ex, but we’ll never know. Also, why would MMC walk away when he sees the ex (the ex beat up the FMC and put her in the hospital)?
And speaking of the ex he only gets a restraining order against him - he was never picked up and arrested for assault.
I feel like there are other instances, but I didn’t care enough to backtrack.

Can’t tell if this is just poorly written or not written by a human.
Small continuity issues and inability to recognize that “he called during his break” is actually FIVE words and not 4, like the sentences after it stated (“I stared at the words. Four words.”), made me lean towards my latter suspicion and I DNFd.
I’m not making accusations about this author, just clarifying why it was a 1 (really a 0) for me. Writing was very choppy (and somehow also heavy?) with little to no fluctuation in sentence types.

Beautifully written book that I enjoyed wholeheartedly. Holden was driven and somewhat aloof except at doing his job. Eden came along and messed up his well organized life in a good way. The story was not rushed. The characters got to know each other before even sleeping together. The one part I didn't understand is why Eden's ex wasn't in jail after he nearly killed her.

It could have been so good, but the editing was just awful. A lot of inconsistencies, repetitiveness, and poor execution.
If you can look past those shortcomings the story is good. I really enjoyed the characters and how dryly they are written - both the MMC and FMC are very autistic coded. So much potential in their story, but it was still lovely to see them come together.

Boring
Not what I expected. Couldn't even finish I tried to keep going but book was all over the place.some things didn't make sense. And no great sex scenes !!! Details didn't add up.it said one thing then went totally different. Weird book !!!

3.75. This was actually a pretty good book. I liked the characters and the story line was good. It really needed someone to edit it. There were a couple of obvious inconveniences. But overall a good read

Cute story
Cute story but a few issues, good medical context. The title didn't seem to fit the story. Best friends for years but never knew or saw a photo of the brother? What happened to the 600 wedding guests then was 300?

What a horrible life. To have to choose a job over family. What a stressful life to have to plan a high-profile wedding on your own. Lots of angst in this book.
