Zack Westland awakens on the shore of Lake Erie, his memory gone. Assaulted by powerful psychic fragments, he learns that he belongs to a tribe of angels—one of several living on Earth since the Blood Wars. Pursued by cacodaimons intent on killing him—again—he seeks to end war between the tribes.

I don't usually go for urban fantasy, but Conspiracy of Angels pulled me in so fast it left my head spinning, in a seriously good way. Rather than tell you much about the story, which Michelle Belanger does brilliantly in the book (which you should order right now if you haven't already), I'm going to tell you why you'll love it.
If you're a geek, you'll love the book because you'll actually get Zack's references! BSG, Dr Who, Star Wars, LOTR -- spending time with him will feel like hanging out with your real friends. Only without the scheduling hassles.
If you're into or curious about paranormal & psychic stuff, you'll love the book because it deals head-on with all of that! Zack has to find ways of dealing with his psychic experiences before he even knows they're psychic experiences. And this is the first book I've ever found that actually suggests multiple ways immortality could work with mortal bodies.
If you're passionate about gender issues, you will love Conspiracy for having multiple central characters who are not male, not trying to be male, and who kick ass at what they do. FINALLY!!!!
If you're curious about kink or BDSM, you'll love the book for giving you an insider's view of what goes on in that world through the eyes of someone who is openly skeptical about whether it's ethical, even as he struggles honestly to respect other people's choices.
If you support transgender folk, you'll love Conspiracy for Saliriel alone. She makes no apologies for who she is or how she has changed during her (unusually long) life. She's also the first openly trans character I've found in mainstream fiction. Given how many people seem to decide things like being gay and being trans are ok as they meet real actual people who are those things -- I want to start seeing more trans characters asap!
If you love a good story - so, basically if you're a living being - you'll love the book for how it grabs you and pulls you into the whirlwind that is Zack's life. There's so much we still don't know by the end of book 1, and I have no doubt that this is just the tip of a very dark and creepy iceberg.
I just ordered four copies to give to my friends, because - as Zack and the Starks would say - winter is coming. That means I need to get some presents lined up. This is a totally self-serving one -- I need to be able to squee with more people about the Shadowside.
The internet is full of advice for writers. I'm sure you've seen the top-ten list of tropes to avoid, trends that need to die and cliches that make editors crazy. For every one of these, "Don't ever do this" examples, there are authors who flip off the establishment and finish the sentence, "...but if you have to do that, here's how to do it right."
Better known as a nonfiction author, Michelle Belanger makes a smashing debut into fiction with Conspiracy of Angels. In the first chapter, A drowning man fights for life, hallucinating as he struggles to get to shore. He has no idea who he is or what the hell happened to him. The "waking up with amnesia" trope is on one of those aforementioned lists, but damned if Belanger doesn't pull it off and make it utterly riveting.
When the man finally opens his wallet and reads his driver's license, Zachary Westland realizes his only clue is the business card to a nightclub. He hitchhikes to a roadhouse and tries to get his act together. Random visions of death and violence and a police bulletin showing a man that looks like him doesn't help him at all.
It seems a lot of people know Zack, but he doesn't know himself. At the club, he meets Saliriel, an imposing transwoman who is not at all happy to see him, and Remy, who is honor-bound to help him. He doesn't trust either one of them, and his allegiances get even murkier when he encounters Lilianna, a petite redheaded bombshell whose instinct is to kill first and sort things out later.
Lil and Zack discover that an eons-old peace accord between ancient Angelic tribes is wearing thin. Zack may have known to the hows and whys, but whatever he knew is long gone, replaced by cryptic ciphers. With Remy and Lil's help, Zack sorts through the wreckage of his life, his memory and his skills to solve the riddle of who he is and what he needs to do.
This is an urban fantasy that slides right into your head and doesn't let go. This is not a romance novel dressed up in the latest paranormal fashion. It's an adventure through blood-drenched horror and action, interspersed with magical realism so convincing that I would not be surprised if some of the esoteric sources cited in the text actually exist. Belanger has published several books on paranormal subjects, so I'm reasonably sure the research is solid.
The one thing that stuck out as odd to me was the setting. I've read plenty of other urban fantasy tales set in Chicago, New York, Tokyo, London and St. Louis, but can this kind of story work in Cleveland? It's kind of off the beaten track for name recognition. As I kept reading, I realized that the characters and the story fit the setting just fine. The city becomes a minor character as the author weaves the city's locations and history into the plot. So yeah. Cleveland. Gritty, tough, and banged up a bit, just like the rest of the characters. Zack strikes me as kind of an asshole with a new-found heart of gold and I can't quite figure out Remy's connection to him, but I'm working on it. I have a soft spot for take-no-bullshit women and I can't decide if my favorite character is Saliriel or Lil.
When I finished reading Conspiracy of Angels, I had a book hangover. I didn't want to admit that the book was finished and flipped back through the chapters trying to piece together my own theories of what might happen in book 2.
I highly recommend this for fans of urban fantasy, horror, and action. If you like to take romps through territory where demons twist in the shadows and you aren't afraid to get a little blood spatter on your shoes, you need to read this.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Originally published at www.bookie-monster.com.
Sometimes urban fantasy is hit or miss for me. The writing is too prosaic and the characters rather uninteresting, or else the plot or mythology is trite. Finding a story about angels that breaks the hackneyed mold is truly refreshing, and Conspiracy of Angels does just that.
Belanger's characters are engaging, her mythology is unique among the multitudes of angels/demons/vampires lore, and her writing is fast-paced. She's created a winsome hero in Zack, and the others of his entourage are equally likable and provide interesting depth.
Definitely an entertaining read if you're a fan of the genre.
This was one of those book that I just did not realize how much I had read before I looked at the page numbers. Suddenly I was on page 100, so obviously I had to read on. But I did stop at page 300, I mean I had to get something done that evening. So I finished it in the morning instead ;) This book shows lot of promise, I hope it will get better and better.
I do like the amnesia premise. Zach wakes up and knows nothing, so we know nothing. Little by little we learn of different tribes of angels, the wars they have fought, and the conspiracy that Zach tried to get to the bottom of. He is in danger, but he does not know why. There is mystery and suspense thrown into this UF.
Zach, well he does not know much, duh. But he seems nerdy with his pop culture references and love of languages (some things he remembers, we will see why later). But is he good or not? He feels he is, but then he knows nothing. But I liked him.
Helping him later on he has someone calling himself his brother, I was so unsure about Remy all the way through. And Lilli, who was a breath of fresh air. She never stopped, aye I liked her.
I think the reason why I read it so fast but did not know it, is, oh maybe page 1 was heavy? But the rest just flowed? Anyhow, like I said, it shows promise and was a good start to a new series.
I look forward to reading more of this promising series, everything is good for now, but everything is so not ok in the world. Intriguing.
I really expected to love this book & looking at all the positive reviews make me feel like I'm missing something but I just don't care about the main character and have absolutely no interest in finding out what will happen to him. You would think after 230 pages I'd care at least a little bit but I just don't and this story is completely missing that little spark that keeps me hooked.
There are too many good books out there to waste time on ones I'm not enjoying so this is going on the DNF pile.
Conspiracy of Angels starts off with our main character struggling to not only get out of a body of water, but also figure out just who he is. Seems he's lost his memories - or most of them. He's not a complete amnesiac, he certainly remembers his love of all things geek and other random facts; he's just not certain about anything pertaining to himself. Once out of the water, which he guesses must be Lake Erie, his scans his pockets for any clues and finds a wallet with Zackary Westland's driver's license, some cash and a business card for Club Heaven.
From there Zach tries to piece together his memories, battle things that shouldn't exist by doing things he shouldn't be able to do, with people who can't seem to remember he has no memories. I frequently found myself sharing Zach's frustration when his companions, Remy and Lilianna, would constantly criticize him for his actions or lack thereof, when he.has.no.memories.
I love stories about angels. And, while I found this author's somewhat unique take on them and their different tribes, it felt like something was missing. I liked the book, but I don't know if I liked it enough to continue on with the series. (Rating: ✮✮½)
Fast-paced and full of action. I enjoyed the world and I haven't read anything like it. Characters are diverse as well. Highly recommended if you enjoy urban fantasy or if you watch Supernatural.
I love Michelle Bellanger’s nonfiction work, so I jumped at the chance to read her fiction, and while her writing is still absolutely exceptional, I almost didn’t finish it. It’s definitely not like any other angel story I’ve read – but it is a cool urban fantasy which incorporates her excellent paranormal research and creates some intriguing and memorable characters.
The amnesiac main character waking up is a common cliche, but this is very well done and I found myself pulling for him to learn who he is or how he landed on the shore of Lake Erie. It’s engaging, fast paced and entertaining as he struggles to find his way back to himself and figure out what happened.
I loved the use of magick in this book, especially the ethereal blades, the overlapping of dimensions in time and space, the archangels themselves, and the interesting reference material. Unfortunately, I got a bit lost at times regarding which groups were allies, which were enemies, which were extinct, supposed to be extinct, etc., etc. I could have used a flow chart!
After a while, the book turned into fight scene after fight after fight. Eventually, I gave up, skipped to the last chapter, and it ended as well as it began. If you love a lot of action and endless battles, this is the book for you. It is also mysterious, especially at the beginning when his amnesia is the worst, but eventually that became old and I just wanted to know what was actually going on.
I have very mixed feelings as there’s a lot to like here, but I feel the endless combat scenes overwhelmed the more interesting plot points, curiosities, and character development.
Amnesia story. Wings. I want to enjoy this book. Every character has an extended back-story - I feel like there should be some books in the series that I've missed - but no, it's book one. Future books will probably develop these stories.
It has all the right elements, and somehow it's boring. Sigh. Drop one star if you don't love amnesia stories. I won't be looking for book 2.
When I realized Michelle Belanger was trying her hand at writing fiction, I knew I had to check it out. The books she wrote before were all non-fiction topics on the paranormal and so it just seems right that she would follow along that path with her fictional debut. Even though, out of all the paranormal subjects, angels are probably my least favorite fictional characters, I do still enjoy reading books involving them as long as the story is good. Conspiracy of Angels is just that...a good story.
Pleasantly surprised- don't come across a read like this every day! was very well written, dark and thrilling without being gloomy or depressive. interesting mystery puzzle aspect through amnesia angle, and the conspiracy kept me gripped. Loved the humour and the snappy dialogue between engaging characters. already can't wait for the next one, a writer to watch!
Generally, I don't go for the angel-type books. But my fun read stack of books was getting so low and I was a bit intrigued by the book. Good thing, too. Belanger did not disappoint with this book. This was a fast read for me.
All of the story plots and points were not resolved which left room for the second book to open up. I can't wait for the Book #2.
A fast read, well written, lots of action. I read it at bedtime but then dreamt that evil black bugs were gnawing on my brainstem, so perhaps it's more of a morning read.
I devoured this book with unrestrained enthusiasm. Everything clicked for me right away. Memory loss is my favorite narrative trope, so that might be part of it. We dive right into the middle of the action with Zack dragging himself out of the murky waters of Lake Erie. He has no memory of who he is or what's happened to him, but something frightening is on his trail. We follow clues and unravel the mystery of Zack's memory loss as he's drawn inexorably into a tangled web involving supernatural beings and ancient forces.
I like Zack a lot. He's a funny and compassionate character who may just be the physical embodiment of John Mulaney joking, "You know those days when you're like: This might as well happen?" He's just trying to roll with the punches, and the punches keep on coming.
*** spoilers *** I was surprised and moved by the choice Zack makes at the end to sacrifice his own memories/wholeness for the sake of others who may not even deserve that sacrifice. Memory loss tropes often come hand-in-hand with a return of memory, or a repairing of what was broken. Zack's choice to let go of himself for his family was a touching and a deep character-building moment. I'm really interested to see how this will play out in subsequent books, and I wonder what else we'll learn alongside him as he encounters more people and things he may not remember. *** end spoilers ***
Belanger's writing is engaging and easy to read, with a good balance of scene setting, action, and witty dialogue. The characters are unique and interesting and their interactions are a whole lot of fun to watch. The world building is complex, but delivered in sensible bites that make it easy for the reader to follow along. The natural and the supernatural weave together seamlessly to create a world you can really immerse yourself in. I can safely say it's a world I'll want to come back to again and again.

Disclaimer: I was sent this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Although I am SEVERELY behind in doing so (oh, life, you rude cow).
Let's get to the basics: 30-something Zack wakes up half drowned in Lake Erie with no memory of who he is or how he got there. After dragging himself to dry land and making his way to a rural bar, he realizes he is able to pick up on psychic impressions and that he's a wanted murder suspect. What follows is a near non-stop thrill ride as he rediscovers a past of Angels, demons and even a few zombies.
I won't go into spoiler territory, mainly because this is a supernatural mystery so half of what I could say wouldn't make any sense, but I will say I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this book both times that I've read it. Michelle Belanger managed to keep an excellent pace throughout the book with nary a dull moment. Zack is constantly on the hunt for answers to his sudden amnesia and a colorful cast of characters come along to aid (or hinder) him on his way. I absolutely love that Zack is a huge geek (literally as he is 6'3") and that practically the only memories he retains are pop-culture based. It gives the reader something to identify with so we don't feel completely out of place in this world of heavenly conspiracies.
Belanger has crafted a fantastic world with great characters and an exciting story here and I've already purchased the next novel in the series. Give this one a shot, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
From the first page, an immersive experience, as we rise out of the water gasping for air and direction with the main character, Zack.
I have been enjoying fantasy novels since I was a child, but this was my first urban fantasy and I was not sure what to expect, but having read some of Belanger’s nonfiction, and having a deep appreciation for their work through that introduction to it, I was curious to see what kind of fictional world they would create, what would happen in that world, and how they would populate it.
As the reader, being introduced not only to a new world, but also a new-to-me genre, it was essential that I trust the writer, and to do that, the writer had to swiftly earn that trust, which they did. Belanger orients us in their world and its unique rules through the maximally disoriented Zack, the main character who opens his eyes underwater with no memory of who he is. Any resistance we might feel to the Shadow Side of the reality Belanger presents is released through Zack’s resistance to it and distrust of it as it engages him. We let go of our doubts as he wrestles with his, and like so, the angels, the demons, the vampires, all become extremely real.
Once in, the world continues to allure, despite (because of) the danger, the darkness, and the sense of anchored timelessness. It’s an action-centered comfort read that lifts you out of the mundane into the extraordinary and leaves you smiling contentedly at the end, simultaneously satisfied and keen to start book two.
Aesthetic is a significant part of any fantasy and the aesthetic choices of the writer are as important as the quality of the writing itself. Throughout the book, Belanger excels.
More narrators should have their memory wiped away like this before the book begins- so they can focus on what is happening. I found this in a second-hand bookshop a couple of weeks ago. This was after my disappointment with ‘Hard Gods.’ Yet, the first sentence of this book left me hopeful, so I purchased it. This wouldn’t be the first time that a sequel has gone astray. Certainly, this first book of the series ticks all the boxes. The author has delivered a narrator: with skin in the game, purporting to be a primary source, on the run. I’ve been busy reading though- it took till now to rise to the top of the reading list. I read this in under 24h. Excellent. This is a more satisfying Zac than the wayward, button-lipped one in ‘Hard Gods’ – he appears to have more raw purpose and is more open and communicating with other characters. Perhaps the problem with ‘Hard Gods’ is that Zac is surrounded by mortals and cannot speak. But a ‘locked-in syndrome’ results that starves that book of the banter and sparks from his various immor(t)al sidekicks. Remy and Lily are awesome in ‘Conspiracy of Angels.’ They could spawn a series of their own. Go the ferret!
This is the first book I've read of Michelle Belanger. I knew of her from her connection to the paranormal community and already liked her, so I had high hopes about how this book would be. I wasn't disappointed. A sort of urban fantasy read, this story centers around the realm of angels, something a little different for me (I lean toward books about magic and fantasy but haven't read too many books focusing on angels), but I think the story was told very well. I was captivated early on and the book held my attention from beginning to end.

Review
In this pulse-pounding urban fantasy, Conspiracy of Angels is in a league of its own. Borrowing heavily from biblical mythology, Nephilim, Anakim and Daughters of Lilith are just a smattering of the pawns in this larger than life chess game. Check, mate and match, it delivers a powerful punch to those who like their cities dark, characters unpredictable, and intrigue abound. Delivered at a breakneck speed, it draws the reader in and doesn’t let loose until the final piece is played. Following the adventures (and misadventures) of amnesiac Zachery Westland, Conspiracy of Angels plays the right moves at the right time, all the way until the bittersweet end.
Michelle Belanger, an author I know more from her true life psychic phenomena novels has delivered the coup de grace here when it comes down to page turning adventures. Witty, terse, and fast paced, the writing has to be commended. With a tight word economy, that only lapses in few places, the scenes are well laid out and flow like the eddies of Lake Erie off the shores of a dark Cleveland, the setting for this book. Her knowledge of the mystical perseveres throughout the novel, lending it an almost unprecedented authority. The writing only lets out what Zachery learns about himself and despite the quick reading time, it holds you fast. There is no mistaking the latent talent here. The writing is solid and accomplishes its primary goals, which includes getting the reader to the end of the book in one piece.
The characters were well developed for the most part but they fell short in some scenes. The dialogue between characters was authentic, to a point. Given what the reader learns about the dramatis personae, some act, well just plain oddly at times – almost as if the characters have stepped out of the story for a moment and come back with new behavioral traits. This lack of character “learning” takes a bit of the mystique out of the characters, rendering them two and a half dimensional throughout. Dialogue between them, however, is the hallmark that allows you to get by this. Poignant, it functions as a literary tool to either thicken the intrigue or propel the plot forward; in any which way, it is always entertaining.
Despite any shortcomings in the characterization, what really grabs your attention in the novel is the intrigue, mystery, and suspense. Belanger has done a remarkable job plotting the twists and turns in this hectic adventure, moving the reader along at a frantic pace, desperate to learn more about the inhabitants of Shadowside, and the characters that surround it. Avid lovers of mystery, even if they are new to this aspect of Michelle’s writing, I believe will find this a delightfully intricate plot filled with plenty of surprises. The strongest piece in the set, the Queen, has a story to tell, and that story is remarkable.
Lovers of urban fantasy, biblical mythology, and mystery enthusiasts will find plenty to like in Conspiracy of Angels. Michelle Belanger has crafted a fine story here and there is something everyone can relate to. The writing is well executed, the plot solid, and the characters, while not as rounded as they should be, hold the reader’s attention long enough to get this quick paced thriller an easy read that will lead you to wonder what more lurks on the Shadowside.

Angels, demons, special abilities and where no one is the white knight. I liked the unique characters and how Zack came back into the world he'd forgotten. It allowed the reader to learn about this complex, and fascinating world along with him.
The story started out with short, curt sentences that were so distant from the character himself, that I felt immediately disconnected. It was a fast-paced scene however, and written that way to perhaps make the reader feel the confusion that was taking place in Zack's perspective. But, once he was in the cab of the semi, I found the writing to smooth out, gain a rhythm, and soon enough I was asking all of the questions I know the author wanted me to ask. Who is Zack? What is Zack?
The pacing was well done, with the breakneck speed to begin with followed by a steady gallop through the middle as we were given hints about Zack's past, and I was given a look into the world of angels, demons, and tribes. I lacked how it strayed away from the holy religious portion of it and created its own, believable niche.
Every character felt fleshed out. They each hair their quirks, and distinctive voices within the novel. Zack has some unusual siblings, but it was also what made them so interesting to learn about. Also, Lil's presence was great. She was the female counterpart but the author thankfully avoiding filling the pages with a budding romance. There was some sexual tension, but with Lailah still missing, it gave an excuse to avoid it. It's not that I'm against romances within a story, but I hate when it overtakes the plot and main goals of the characters. The author did a fantastic job of balancing everything, I felt.
CONCLUSION
The story is fast paced, and kept me on my toes. I loved finding out more about the tribes, and how they were the same and differed. The different creatures in this new urban world and their connection with one another. On top of all of that, there was a fantastic mystery to solve regarding Zack's past.
I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this in return for an honest review.
I did not know anything about this book, or the author, before I started reading, and with it not being a genre I read much in any more, I had very little in the way of expectations.
It was definitely a very easy read, and I enjoyed the story and the whole mythology around the angels. The pace was super fast, and the writing itself not bad at all. The characters were distinctive and pretty well fleshed-out considering the main character suffers from amnesia. (A concept that shouldn't have worked, but does!)
My only real problem was with the constant clumsy references to sci-fi pop culture. Ok, I get it. I'm a fan too. But it really started to get annoying very quickly, and gave the book a bit of a self-indulgent fan-fiction feel. Not enough to put me off reading, but just enough to annoy a little from time to time. I intend to pass the book along to my teenage daughter, who I am sure will love it (and who loves fan-fiction, so won't mind that aspect at all!)
Oh, and it would have been nice if the editor had picked up on the antagonist's name and kept it constant (instead of it changing between "Dorimiel" and "Dormiel"). It's the kind of thing that's hard for an author to see, as you get so familiar with the names you don't really read them as such, but a half-decent proof reader should have picked up on it. It's not a big thing, but when the amount of syllables in a character's name is as important as here, it would be nice to keep it straight!
I really had no intention of reading this book because it simply isn't a genre I thought I would enjoy. Then, I was able to see a reading by the author online of the book and it definitely peeked my interest. I ordered it from book depository so I would get free shipping and was pleasantly surprised after I read the first few pages. This book literally has something for everyone, from supernatural, to transgender, amazing fight scenes, mystery and incredible character build. It is unique that it takes place largely in the Cleveland area. I have read a ton of books over the years and normally I see familiar cities like New York or LA, Detroit, but this has been fun because it is in a different location that other books which makes me feel like I am learning a bit about the Cleveland area while enjoying the amazing writing. This book WILL expand your vocabulary! I often refer to Belanger as a human encyclopedia and this first work of fiction definitely shows off her brilliant mind. Having had the opportunity to speak with Michelle on different forums in the past several years it is easy to see how this "fiction" novel is in a lot of ways a telling of her own story. Clearly a labour of love. I can't wait for the next books in the series to come out - they are the only books listed in my budget for 2016! Watch Michelle read from Conspiracy of Angels on YT. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7JBp...
I love books where an author does something different with their writing and Belanger does that here with angels and demons. These are not your usual good vs. evil angels, these are power-hungry Fallen who want mortals to return to the time where the three tribes of angels were worshipped as gods. Of course there was a big battle between the tribes but after they were almost decimated the leaders of each tribe buried their tokens of power in order to have peace on earth. When that didn't work, the infighting and power struggles begin again. This is where we come in when we meet our hero, Zachary, splayed out at the edge of Lake Erie with no memory and something evil chasing him. All he has is a business card for a nightclub and when it takes off from there, there's no stopping the action. I loved it and want the next one right now. Great characters, even the secondary and tertiary characters have grit and motivation and are integral to the plot. Setting was cool and the mythology and history of the angels was unique and not overdone. Again, I loved it.
Our main character Zack has a bit of a problem, he wakes up in a lake and no idea how he got there or who he is. Now over the course of the story he gets flashes of his memory back but for having no idea what his name is (has to look at his license) he can still make Doctor Who references. Not complaining but... a bit odd. This urban fantasy revolves around angels and their various "tribes" or groups. Tribes is in quotes because they don't quite seem that organized... or really together... at all at times. Anyway, this book wasn't bad we get a full intro into his abilities and what he is as he does due to his amnesia. His ability to recall pop culture quips though nothing else some humor. I just felt like it was missing something though as I just finished it I can't put my finger on what atm. Overall though a good starting book just here's hoping that the rest of the series just builds upon it.
