Escape into the history of the American West along with five of today’s leading inspirational fiction authors who deliver exciting historical romances begun from advertisements for mail-order marriages. Placing their dreams for new beginnings in the hands of a stranger, will Cinda, Emily, Maura, Gabe, and Daughtry each be disappointed, or will some find true love?
Tracie Peterson is a bestselling author who writes in both historical and contemporary genres. Her novels reveal her love for research as well as her strong desire to develop emotionally meaningful characters and stories for her readers. Tracie and her family live in Montana.
Cinda, Emily, Maura, Gabe and Daughtry find marriage partners through letters, but will they find happiness with Lucas, Cade, Luther, Lena and Nicholas?
I usually choose to read these collections from Barbour Books based on the theme and at least one author being already known to me. In this case, the theme is one I enjoy and there were three authors whose writing I had been wanting to try more of/for the first time - Denise Hunter, DiAnn Mills and Tracie Peterson. After reading the story by Tracie Peterson, I went back to the beginning of the ebook to check on publication dates. I was a bit relieved to see that hers from 2002, so it having read like an early work made perfect sense and mitigated my disappointment with the storyline, writing, and especially the immaturity of a heroine who reacts to problems by continually running away. I enjoyed the entry by Denise Miller, and was charmed and delighted by DiAnn Mills' mail-order husband Gabe.
Overall, an enjoyable collection of stories which were originally copyrighted between 1996 and 2002. If you enjoy historical inspirational romance and/or mail order bride stories, this is worth picking up for Mary Davis' Cinda's Surprise and DiAnn Mills' Mail-Order Husband in particular.
This is a good way to become aware of authors I had not heard of previously. 5 different authors, Christian stories, no sex but romance, historical fiction, gentle stories. Just what the doctor ordered.
I like 3 of the novellas very much. The other two were still readable.
This book has 5 novel of marriages contracted thru the mail to form solid, loving marriages. To say all is smooth sailing would be an untruth, as rocky roads and relationships are in store for all five of these early pioneers lives in the West. All contain a solid story with good plotting and character growth, mystery, evil people and relatives that leave a lot to be desired. The authors demonstrated how God’s plan will work to his good and the good of each person involved. Each is a clean wholesome story of love and adversity in a time period when life was harder than we can imagine and each character has a wonderful love of God. All will keep your interest from the first story to the last and leave you wanting more.
Cinda's Surprise by Mary Davis
Cinda is an old maid with friends that want to see her married and out from under her Aunt's domineering and demeaning thumb. Cinda finds herself a mail order bride due to her friend’s interference and plotting. Off Cinda goes to the Wild West on a harrowing stagecoach ride with a new husband and a very unwelcome surprise waiting at the end of their journey for both. All is not as it seems with her husband, Lucas Rawlings, he has a huge secret; Cinda also is not all her friends wrote as she lacks housewife skills. I was enthralled with Cinda's situation from the first paragraph and loved watching her and Luke grow and mature to a solid loving marriage, but rocky would hardly describe their journey. Ms. Davis did a wonderful job of plotting and pacing this book. I was sorry to say goodbye to the characters.
His Brother's Bride by Denise Hunter
Emily Wagner headed west to marry Thomas; She arrives after a long extremely dirty journey to marry Thomas only to find he has died prior to her arrival. Cade, Thomas's brother, a Godly man and widower, decides to step into his place and marry Emily, as his small son needs a mother, however Emily is not all she seems. This is a story of old crimes, secrets, and mysteries, new hurts and sadness as Emily desires a real marriage and Cade wants one in name only, Emily has a secret that could tear her world apart, an evil Uncle of the highest caliber, a man and woman who need each other, Emily's Nana that is held by her Uncle as a pawn in his evil game, and Gods redeeming love. Ms. Hunter's plotting was spot on, character growth was wonderful, and the twists and turns kept me interested in what would happen next, and the pacing was good. This is another solid Christian story that has it all, love, secrets, mystery, and evil.
Change of Heart By Judith McCoy Miller
Luther Buchanan went west to prove himself to his father. He has a General Store in Placerville, California that is very successful and now he needs a wife and her extra hands to help with his store. Maura Rebecca Thorenson wants a husband and family. She answers Luther’s ad and heads west on a ship around the Cape. It was not an easy voyage, but she meets two wonderful women. One will be lost at sea; the other, Georgette, is unwed and pregnant. Things will blow sky-high when her future husband finally meets her, as Maura has kept a huge secret from him and she also fully intends to care for Georgette as long as possible. Luther is furious and feels used, he is also hard-nosed, arrogant, self-serving, opinionated, angry, considers Maura a cripple and doesn’t mind stating so to her, he has no intention of making this a real marriage; he is altogether a very cantankerous ill-tempered ill-mannered cruel young man. Ms. Miller instilled really obnoxious traits in this man and her portrayal of his treatment of Maura was expertly done; I wanted to shake him until his eyes rolled in his head or maybe even kick him in the seat of his pants. This story evoked a lot of emotion in me as I don’t understand mistreatment of anyone due to his or her mental or physical handicaps or their looks. That said, it was so much fun to watch the character growth of Luther as he grows and matures. What follows is an adventure in growing up, learning handicaps are in the mind, forgiveness, and learning to love and accept. Ms. Miller crafted a wonderful story, and I loved it was the first page to the last; her writing talent grabbed me and did not let go. Her plotting, pacing, and character growth was excellent. You won’t want to miss this solid Christian story of a man more handicapped than his bride, and God’s love and grace in opening his eyes.
Mail-Order Husband by DiAnn Mills
I really enjoyed reading a western romance that did not feature the hero as an Adonis, tall, manly, muscled, hair like gold and blue-eyed. Gabriel Hunters is anything but an Adonis. He is a city boy, portly better known as fat, straw like hair that sticks out everywhere, white skin, soft all over, and knows nothing of farming except what he has read. Lena Walker, mother of two and widowed, is living in a sod home on a run down farm in Nebraska. She is desperate for a husband to help her with the farming and her boys but not desperate enough to marry any of the no goods that came calling. She advertises for a husband and Gabriel answers her mail order husband advertisement. Can these two very different people from different walks of life form a solid family and find love? I wont tell, you will have to read this delightful story.
Gabriel has had his share of troubles from heartache from a beauty woman who made him hope Lena was plain, to bullying and being a laughingstock, but he is a good man at heart, willing to learn, willing to love without limits, and willing to take two young boys as his own flesh and blood. Ms. Mill’s story was heart warming; I fell a little in love with Gabriel as he made his way through the learning process of farming and family. At times, Ms. Mill’s story was heart breaking and sad, at others I was laughing at how inept Gabriel was on the farm and with Lena, and how out-of-place this educated city boy was on the farm. In Lena’s boys, Ms. Mill’s created characters that were a riot. They were honest in their opinions, especially sweet Simon, embarrassingly honest at times; it made me want to pick them up and cover them with kisses, that is after I had stopped laughing over whatever they had just done or said. This is a sweet tale of family and God’s love and what Gods has in store for us as his children. It was refreshing to watch Gabriel become all he could be and find the life he deserved.
The plotting, pacing and character development was excellent as we watched four people become a family unit. I would like to thank Ms. Mill’s for creating a different take on the mail-order bride story.
Forever Yours by Traci Peterson
This story takes place as our country has developed to the point that the automobile is making an appearance, the telephone has limited availability, and life is becoming more advanced. In the town of Bandelero New Mexico, life is still simple with limited advancement.
Daughtry Lucas feels stifled by her father and family on their ranch in Bandelero. Having lost one daughter to a riding accident, he guards Daughtry so well she feels wrapped in cotton. To gain her independence she answers a mail order bride ad penned by Nicholas Dawson, married by proxy and travels to Nicholas’ ranch; leaving a letter for her family explaining what she has done.
What follows is an adventure for Nicholas and Daughtry as they build their marriage, love and life together, along with dealing with her over protective family when they track her down. Nicholas and Daughtry have a firm foundation in the Lord. They will have to overcome many obstacles including vindictive outlaws from his former occupation and Daughtry’s family before they will find the happy ever after they desire. Ms. Peterson plotting and character development was well done, and the pacing was spot on. There is a lot of action in this story and I enjoyed watching Daughtry mature and grow. This is a wonderful story of love, family and God’s plan for our life.
I highly recommend this book for your reading enjoyment.
I received this book from the Publisher and Netgalley in return for an honest review.
Mail-order spouse! And a love in that kind of marriage!
A marriage of convenience is a favourite romantic literature trope, but the one to be used with caution. Will it come out as a truly romantic one? Or the one sounding a bit silly and unbelievable?
Well, it depends - do you believe God can lead you to a marriage with a perfect stranger? Well, He could. But you can you mistake His voice for other reason/issue (and there is plenty of them). So read this collection and decide for yourself about how you feel about these mail-order marriages.
I personally liked DiAnn Mills' "Mail-Order Husband" the best, as the mail-order one is the spouse! A nice twist on the gender of the one "ordered" by mail. I also like Lena and Gabe´s insecurities (they sound real) and their tender way to each other.
Great read. A longer book than I normally read - 651 pages, but then it did have 5 different stories in it by 5 different authors.
I loved 4 of the stories and the characters. Changes of the Heart....not so much. Neither of the two main characters were likable. They were selfish and mean, and Maura's friend Georgette wasn't much better. They changed towards the end, but I still didn't care for that story or the characters
Five delightful stories of mail-order marriage bring five couples together. They will face the challenges of beginning life as a couple against the dangers and harsh reality of life farming or ranching in the west.
Cinda's Surprise - Mary Davis
Cinda is more than a little surprised when she discovers that her friends have organised a mail-order marriage in her name. Deciding to go ahead with the marriage, there are plenty more surprises awaiting Cinda when she and her new husband travel to his Montana farm. While it took me a little while to connect to this story initially, I warmed up to the characters and plot as it developed. At the start everything seemed a little ridiculous, too much deceit and a few nasty characters, but this all works together in the end, raising issues of forgiveness and truthfulness. There is also a host of colourful characters, and a sweet romance. Simple but sweet.
His Brother's Bride - Denise Hunter
When Emily steps off the stage in Cedar Springs she expects to meet her intended for the first time. What she finds instead is her fiancé's brother with terrible news that Thomas has died. Saddened by her loss and troubled that she will no longer be able to search for the gold rumoured to be hidden on the brothers' farm and save her grandmother from the rule of her horrible uncle, Emily is surprised when Cade offers to marry her. But it isn't quite the arrangement she expects it to be. I liked this story. It's no secret that I love Denise Hunter's writing. This story has a clever and detailed plot, beautiful setting, wonderful characters and a romance with chemistry that leaps of the page. There is plenty of adventure and tension, as Emily seeks to balance her need to continue searching for the gold with her growing feelings for husband.
Changes of The Heart - Judith McCoy Miller
Maura sets out for California as part of a mail-order marriage. But she hasn't been totally truthful with her intended. The marriage doesn't start out well, with hurtful comments and strong wills leading to fierce arguments. As time passes and the couple choose to have a little distance in their relationship, it will take a changing of both their hearts to reconcile. While I mostly enjoyed this novella, I couldn't help become a little irritated at the characters - both with their endless quarrelling and their general propensity to go on and on about things. If the message of this book is centred around not judging others then it is apt, because the characters, Maura, her husband Luther and even her friend Georgette, are pretty good at casting stones. It's a complicated little story and seemed as detailed as any full length book.
Mail-Order Husband - DiAnn Mills
Lena, widow, mother of two boys and owner of a farm in Nebraska, is desperate for help - but not so desperate as to accept the hand of the men around her town. Unsure where else to turn she places an advertisement for a mail-order husband. But Gabriel Hunters is not the man she was expecting. A scholar, city man and overweight, he has no farming experience and even less knowledge about being a husband or father. But as Gabe and Lena weather the wild Nebraska seasons together, Gabe continually surprises Lena with his determination, gentleness, kindness and faith. There are trials ahead for this new little family, but together they can withstand anything. I really enjoyed this story. It is a beautiful tale of looking past appearances to what truly matters. As Lena and Gabe's relationship develops, softly and sweetly, so too does Gabe's relationship as father to Lena's two sons. It's a tale of family, adventure, the harsh life of farming and romance of the very best kind. Perfectly paced and enchanting from beginning to end, I would have happily stayed a little longer with this delightful family.
Forever Yours - Tracie Peterson
Forever Yours is the perfect way to end this delightful anthology. Daughtry feels trapped in her life. Smothered by her over-protective brothers and father, she fears she will never have the chance to fall in love or start her own family. Pushed to the edge, she decides to accept an advertisement as a mail-order bride. When she arrives at her new home she is surprised to find that her new husband is not there. Determined to get off to a good start she begins work around their ranch while waiting for his return. I really enjoyed this story. Daughtry is one headstrong woman. I loved the romance the springs up between her and her husband Nick. Their relationship gets off to a really good start. Nick has a charming and cheery disposition. However, they are both keeping their pasts hidden from the other. It will take being faced with grave danger to truly open up and begin trusting. This is a simple story, with the complications resulting from dangerous situations rather than relationship drama. It makes for a fun read and truly enjoyable romance. Very sweet.
The publishers provided a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
If you are looking for five amazing Mail Order Marriage books all in one. This one is for you. For some reason I just love mail order marriage books, they are always full of excitement, uncertainty and romance. Some you will not want to put down. I was given a copy of this book from net galley for my honest opinion.
Cinda’s Surprise - by Mary Davis -
Cinda is not sure what to think of the letter she just received. What is expected of her? When she finally decides to go through with her marriage to Lucas will she be able to be the wife he needs? When surprises seam to come at her in all directions will she keep her promise to him?
Lucas needs to find Cinda and get home. When some complications arise will he go home empty handed or has God a plan after all. When his secrets reveal themselves is it more than Cinda can handle? When tragedy strikes will Cinda return or is it more than she can handle?
This novel is full of surprise, laughter, love, family and forgiveness.
His Brother’s Bride - by Denise Hunter -
Emily is not sure what to do when she learns of her fiancés death. When she agrees to marry his brother Cade she may not be prepared for all that is in store. Will she ever get the desires of her heart? Can all this deceit lead to anything good? When Cade’s son and even Cade find their way into her heart is it all for nought?
Cade is not sure why he asked her to marry him, other than he needs a ma for his boy and a helper on his farm. Will the guilt over having feelings for someone else ever go away? What ever is Emily doing with her time and what secrets is she hiding?
Changes of the Heart - by Judith McCoy Miller -
Maura is off on quite an adventure. Will Luther be all she hoped for and will he understand her deceit? When Maura finally mets Luther things are not quite what she expected, will she be able to go through will all of this or not?
Luther really just wants a good helper, when he meets Maura he is not expecting her secret nor her friend. Will they have a change of heart or not?
There are times in this novella you will want to just want to slap some people and tell them to grow up. There is much to learn, going to do and forgiveness to be given.
Mail-Order Husband - by DiAnn Mills
Lena has no where else to turn other than follow what she believes is Gods leading and put out an advertisement for a Mail-Order Husband. When Gabe steps off the platform he is not what she expected and wonders if she really heard Gods leading. Lena has a strong will and temper of her own.
Gabe has never imagined doing anything like this. It is so out of character for him, yet he can’t deny feeling God is leading him to answer this advertisement. When he meets Lena old fears arise and he wonders if this is a big mistake.
This is not your typical mail-order novella. There is romance and the sparks of getting to know one another yet it is full of much much more. We are introduced to many more people with whom their lives intertwine. This book has a lot to do with forgiveness and love.
Forever Yours - by Tracie Peterson
Daughtry is feeling smothered, when she finds an ad for a wife she wonders if this is her out. With her decision made she wonders if she made the right one. When she finally meets Nicholas she knows she loves him already. Yet there are secrets they both have that may put a strain on their marriage.
Nicholas can’t believe his luck. Yet what secrets is she hiding and will she trust him enough to not ask to many questions? Yet when the past comes to town will he be able to keep those he loves safe?
This novella is stuffed with mystery, love, laughter, spunk and drama.
Mail Order Marriage: Five Historical stories of marriage arranged by strangers (various authors). Cinda’s Surprise by Mary Davis involves Cinda Harrison and Lucas Rawlings. Cinda’s friends decided to help her find a husband. Cinda agrees to the marriage and wonders why Lucas needed a mail order bride. Cinda discovers the answer when she arrives at his home. Will these two be able to make it work?
His Brother’s Bride by Denise Hunter takes place in Cedar Springs, Kansas. Emily Wagner is traveling to Cedar Springs to meet her fiancé, Thomas for the first time. Emily is hoping this marriage will help her save her grandmother from her Uncle Stewart’s clutches. Emily arrives to find Cade Manning, Thomas’ brother. Thomas died before Emily arrived. Cade (a widower), though, needs a wife to help with the house and to take care of his son. Will Emily still be able to help her grandmother?
The third book is Changes of the Heart by Judith McCoy Miller. Luther Buchanan opened a mercantile in Placerville, California. He needs a wife to help at home and around the store. He advertises for a mail order bride (but does not mention he wants help with store). Maura Thorenson feels that Luther’s ad is an answer to her prayers. Maura wants to get married, but none of the local men will marry her because of her affliction (as she calls it). Maura answers Luther’s ad but does not mention her affliction (you just know this is not going to go well). On the trip to California (aboard ship around the Cape) Maura meets Georgette Blackburn. Georgette desperately needs help and Maura is going to provide it. Luther is surprised when he picks up his fiancé. Is there a chance for these two?
Mail-Order Husband by DiAnn Mills is set in Nebraska in 1880. Lena Walker is a widow with two children. They have a farm and she needs help to keep it. She advertises (the local men are disgusting) for a husband (a very rare occurrence). Gabriel Hunters answers her ad. He is a bookkeeper and loves to read. Gabriel figures his book knowledge will help him run a farm (he has never lived on a farm or performed manual work). Lena is shocked by Gabriel’s appearance (and manner of speaking), but Lena gave her word. Will Gabriel be able to work a farm? Can a marriage work between these two very different people?
Forever Yours by Tracie Peterson is set in Bandelero, New Mexico. Daughtry Lucas is twenty-three and would love to escape her family. Her father and brothers are over protective. Daughtry runs away to answer Nicholas Dawson’s ad for a wife. They are married by proxy before Daughtry starts her journey. But Daughtry is not quite what Nicholas was expecting. Does their marriage stand a chance when her father and brother’s show up?
Mail-Order Marriage contained some good stories. I enjoyed three out of the five of them (the first three). The story by Judith McCoy Miller was my favorite (and I wish it had been longer). I give Mail-Order Marriage 4 out of 5 stars. The stories are all well-written and interesting to read (just some more than others). They are all Christian stories with nice themes. There is no sex or foul language in any of the stories. They are good Christian, historical romance stories. The last two are good, but I just did not enjoy them as much as the other three (just personal preference).
I received a complimentary copy of Mail-Order Marriage from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Five couples meeting first through letters in answer to mail order ads learn to work through their differences under difficult and sometimes dangerous circumstances. Set from the 1850's to early 1900's across small town America, each story has a charm of its own.
Cinda's Surprise: For someone who doesn't enjoy surprises, this poor gal sure gets a wagonload of them, and deals with each one with a lot more patience and grit than I would have! Good thing Lucas is kind hearted and good looking. Some good examples of forgiveness and love in this fun story.
His Brother's Bride: Emily is stuck in a dilemma, between the growing love for her new husband and his sweet son, and meeting her uncle's greedy demands. Will love and truth triumph or get crushed under the weight of deception? This one has a nice lesson in being honest in relationships, and trusting the Lord with the details of our lives.
Changes of Heart: This couple sure has a rough start, between his bitterness and hard-heart, plus her hurt feelings, it just may take a tragedy or a miracle to bring them together. It takes both! Lots of prayer, some good friends and a mangy dog help too. They had a lot to work through, but it was good to see them persevere and be committed to making their union grow in love. The description of life in a California gold town, after an ocean voyage around the Horn, was very interesting!
Mail Order Groom: Lena and her two sons are struggling to keep their Nebraska farm going after her husband dies. They get a surprise response to the want ad for a mail order groom all the way from Philadelphia. Gabe fits the bill except he's never set foot on a farm; good thing he's a quick learner! Loved this story of a seemingly opposite couple who overcome many obstacles and dangers, with love, grace and a bit of humor. This one really captured my heart and was my favorite of the collection. What a great example of an honorable, humble, godly man Gabe was to his new family and neighbors. He's on my all time favorite heroes list!
Forever Yours: This couple plunged right into married life after a few brief notes, and had a lot of excitement along the way. Life in New Mexico at the turn of the century was still pretty rough, but these two were determined to make a go of it. Loved how Nick was so patient with naïve Daughtry; their mutual respect for each other was admirable.
There's quite a variety of people and settings in these five different stories. All the stories were quite enjoyable, including a lot of historical details, like their transportation, from a trip around the Horn, to train, stagecoach, wagon and horseback. Their different housing and work was interesting too, from life in a gold town store, to working a farm and living in a sod house, to living in an adobe home on a large cattle ranch. Something to interest everyone! Recommend for fans of historical Christian romance fiction. 4.5 stars (Book provided by NetGalley and Barbour Publishing in exchange for my honest review.)
Mail-Order Marriage is one of those groupings of novelettes that makes you wish the authors had made their story into a full blown novel. Yet, being short stories you're able to dedicate a short amount of time to one novelette and finish the rest at your leisure. Four out of the five stories made me want to know what happened next. The only story I didn't have questions about afterwards was just wrapped up well.
I really enjoyed this book because it's the stories you rarely read about in Amish novels. This is a collection of widows and old maids seeking love or have absolutely given up on ever getting married. The best part, in my opinion, is that one story has nothing to do with marriage and courting. Who had ever heard of an Amish story not ending in a marriage? I'm pretty sure I shed a few tears over that one.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Amish stories, doesn't want to commit to a full novel, or would like to read about those who have faced different trials and yet find love; remember, loving someone isn't all about marriage and courting.
*This book was given to me by NetGalley for an honest review.
This book has five historical stories by five authors about mail-order marriages in the Old West. In CINDA’S SURPRISE, Cinda’s friends surprise her by arranging a marriage for her. She receives an even bigger surprise when she meets her husband. In HIS BROTHER’S BRIDE, Emily’s fiancé dies before she meets him; she then agrees to marry his brother. CHANGES OF THE HEART reveals to Maura the real reason that Luther wants a mail-order bride. Maura, however, has a secret of her own. MAIL-ORDER HUSBAND is a witty story about Gabriel, who wants to be a real farmer, but all his knowledge about farming is from books. Lena needs a farmer husband. Daughtry marries Nicholas by proxy in the story, FOREVER YOURS. Each delightful, captivating story is well-written by a well-known author. The well-drawn characters find the strength they need to face the challenges and unforgettable experiences of the Old West.
“Mail-Order Marriage” is a collection of short stories by various authors. The plot of each story takes place in the American west. Each “bride” answered a request from a gentleman seeking a bride, sight un-seen. Each story has a problem that must be solved before true happiness can be had by the new bride and groom. I enjoyed these short stories very much because I could read a bit and finish the story, put the book down and take care of a chore, then pick the book up again and enjoy another story. The characters in each story were very believable, but I’m not sure that all such mail-order marriages worked out that well in the old west.
Five different couples found marriage through letters in this historical story. Set in the west, each story is tied only by the method the couples came together. Each author has given us a tiny glimpse into her writing style with a romantic novella about love in the west.
Each story was well written and entertaining. I enjoyed the ability to read a short story and come back to the book when I had time. The authors wove faith and trust into the story as well as romance, a touch of drama, and a glimpse into the past. Each story brought out a lesson in faith that the reader can contemplate. It was fun to read a short story by an author I love and I found some new authors to check out as well.
I received this book free of charge from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
5 fictional mail-order bride stories set in the American West are inspirational romance or love stories without any dirty details. Each couple has a secret and obstacles they have to overcome to achieve real trust of their partner. Most guys are tall, dark and handsome, girls are not described in detail. All events take place on a farm with many chores to be done, guys are looking for working hands more than a wife at first. The story lines are not very well developed, they mostly describe the "oohs" and "aahs" of the characters, a little bit of whining, a little bit of praying and moving on to a happy end. After you read the first story, the following ones seem to be very predictable and boring.
This is a collection of 5 stories that total a whopping 658 pages, that's a lot of book for $10. Unfortunately as far as historical romances go, I thought this collections tone was lacking historical accuracy, like putting modern personalities in historical settings rather than describe how the people would have been and behaved then. I enjoy reading historical novels to escape the casual, fickle and independent attitudes of today vs the proper, respectful and thoughtful characters of time past. These stories were nice but not amazing? Tracie Peterson's heroine seemed particularly immature, but it also seems that this is one of the authors earlier stories, which may explain it? Overall worthwhile reads!
I don't think I can express how much I loved this book. First of all, Cinda's story will always and forever be one of my favorites. Ever since I first read it as a Heartsongs Presents book. Every story in this collection not only held my attention but was so well paced and thought out. I LOVED Daughtry and Nick's story SO MUCH! The best thing for a reader is when you have the surprise of seeing familiar characters again. I LOVED learning about Garrett and Maggie's life again! SUCH A WONDERFUL READ!
Thank you Net Galley and Barbour Publishing for the advance e-reader copy for an honest review.
Admittedly, I was disappointed in this collection. The story by DiAnn Mills was the only one that I read all the way through. Tracie Peterson, whom I generally always enjoy reading, fell a little flat. The other three authors need to work really hard on their research. I found so many modernisms mentioned that I gave up reading. When reading a period story, I expect dialogue, story elements, and characters to all reside in that period. The story flow grinds to an abrupt halt when a modernism pops out, and that is disturbing to readers, at least it is to me. My Mom enjoyed reading every word of every story, so I guess it doesn't effect every reader.
I really enjoyed reading every one of these stories. I felt like I really got to know each of the main characters, which doesn’t always happen in books with several stories. I ended up loving them all and couldn’t wait to find out what was going to happen next. Every author in this book wrote a great story. My attention was kept the entire time, and I didn’t want to put the book down. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Romance. I had fun going to another place and time and know you will as well. I received a copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.
Oh my goodness. I absolutely loved this book! These five historical stories were lovely and sweet. The dynamics between the couples showed how important understanding is to a healthy relationship. None of the couples started married life really knowing their partner, yet they were able to have successful relationships. Though it may not have been the point, I felt that they way each couple made the decision to really get to know each other and be honest and open illustrates how important these behaviors are to maintain a close relationship. Regardless, these stories were super cute and fun to read.
Mail Order Marriage is a collection of five stories from five wonderful authors. These stories include: Cinda's Surprise by Mary Davis His Brother's Bride by Denise Hunter Changes of the Heart by Judith McCoy Miller Mail Order Husband by DiAnn Mills Forever Yours by Tracie Peterson I enjoyed every one of the stories but Forever Yours was my favorite of the five. Five stars
Imagining writing to someone as little as one letter then traveling across country or the state and agreeing to marry sight unseen. This book is about 5 couples that did just that. Four of them are about brides traveling and one is about a groom who travels and marries usually within no more than three days of arrival. Each of the stories were well written and fun to read.
Five couples meeting through ads looking for mail-order marriages in the American West and the experiences and adventures they have along the way. Five wonderful stories with excellent characters and emotional stories that will have you escaping back to the Old West. Enjoyable read.
