Challenging our expectations and forcing us to look anew at our reality, Erik Kolbell demonstrates how the eight pillars of the Beatitudes--meekness, empathy, righteousness, peace, persecution, purity, poverty, and simplicity--are still valuable codes of conduct for our individual and collective lives. In this engaging book, he masterfully shows the timeless value in these poetic and paradoxical words from Jesus and how they offer relief and direction in our all-too-confusing world.

I've long known the story of the Exodus, but thot it was all contained in one book. It's not. This doesn't include the death of Moses or the entrance to the Promised Land. Also the last half is spent laying out the Law, much of which seems irrevelent if you're not a Jew. I mean stuff like describing the breast plate and tassles for a priest and the layout of the tabernackle. Which is not to imply the book isn't fascinating. It's well worth reading no matter what your religious affiliation, or lack of it.

What I appreciate about Ellison is his analysis throughout the book. I didn't always agree with him, especially his insistence for explaining some of the plagues as natural occurrences, but his insight gave me a greater understanding of the story of Moses and the Israelites flight from Egypt. I was ashamed to realize how much of this story I thought I knew because of the movie. As a student of theology, I found this a great study guide.
