The Miner's Girl

Rate this book
Born the day of the great mining disaster at Jane Pit, Merry, Trent's start in life is marked with tragedy. She is brought up by her only surviving relative, her feisty grandmother Peggy, living in poverty-stricken isolation in the deserted village near the old pit.

Times are hard, and then an unwelcome visit from the ruthless mining agent, Miles Gallagher, makes them even harder. He callously rapes Peggy, and when she finds to her distress that she is pregnant with his child, she tells no-one.

However, pretty and bright, she attracts the attention of dashing young doctor, Tom Gallagher, Miles' son, and history starts to repeat itself when Merry falls pregnant. She loses both her job and accommodation at the hospital, and her future looks bleak as she faces a tough choice: a marriage of convenience or destitution and the workhouse...

Merry , Ben , and Tom .

Merry grew up in a pit village with her grandmother as her own mam died in childbirth she also grew up with Ben who she thought was her brother but she didn't know her grandmother had been raped .when Merry grew up she met Tom and it seemed as if history was repeating itself .A really great read so down to earth . 5 STARS for a great read .

Having read this after a friend recommended it to me, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. Not to say that I found it to be an amazing book but I don't normally read books of this genre and discovered that I couldn't put it down once getting roughly to the halfway point. I thought the ending was a bit slow but it built up characters. The only thing that I would say is that the pacing was a bit all over the place and I feel like all character development was kind of thrown out the window by the last few chapters. Overall not a book that I would read again but still pleasant enough (except a few shocking parts dotted about) and entertaining.

I completely stumbled on this book randomly, as my mother works in a hotel and one of the guests had left it behind. It's a typical 'hotel reception book', by that I mean a book that would never be a bestseller or available in WHSmith, and the only way you would find it would be in a car boot sale, or as I found it, in a hotel. However, I have to say I liked this book for some reason, it is now one of my guilty pleasure reads, despite the ending being rushed, the book generally is very enjoyable to read.

This book is a nice easy read on a winters evening. I enjoyed the story and the little mystery of what happened to merry's brother. I did feel towards the end it was rushed in places as the story jumped to try to untangle the different characters to create a happy ending.

So I had started reading this on Tuesday, and I had only just put it in to my challenge part as i had no signal at all and OMG! I really could not put it down. I read it at every chance that I got. The story line from beginning to end was amazing! & I am glad that it had ended with a beautiful love story! ❤️ I totally recommend this read to anyone. I didn't think that I'd like it, but I didn't just like it I LOVED IT! I am going to be on the hunt for more books by this author

What a lovely book. Full of emotion. From the death of her granny, her brothers disappearance, grannys rape, the death of her parents.. how she lost out on her nursing but yet still a happy ending at the end of a harrowing storyline. Merry had me feeling not so merry but glad all worked out in the end. Every book needs a happy ending x

I have to say I enjoyed this book, although the structure could some times be confusing and felt like it missed the detailing of important parts of the story. But none the less Maggie Hope is still one of my favourite authors and I am truly addicted to her books and this one's no different.

Loved It!

I really enjoyed the book. It had a great storyline, I could picture the characters, and the story moved on. Zero boredom. I had a hard time putting this book down because I wanted to see what was going to happen next. I haven't read a book like that in quite awhile.

Easy reading ..... which sometimes is all my brain needs. So I enjoyed it :)

Loved certain characters e.g. Benny/Benjamin, Tom I adored and the main character Merry.

Quite predictable ending but, again, makes for a palatable easy read and doesn’t challenge the grey matter too much.

A gripping story of a small family in poverty when a pit explosion leads to the closure of the pit. Based in County Durham, there is intrigue with hidden pregnancies, attempted murder and complicated relationships which luckily have a happy conclusion. A very easy read.

Merry had an awful start in life, she lost her parents, then her gran and brother. She ended up in a violent relationship but was able to get away and set up a good life for herself. I could visualise her life and that of the rich in the area. Great story, liked how it was written.

This wasn't what I thought it would be at all. It was terrible! So sad and heartbreaking and violent at times! I'm glad it ended well at least!
