Zoe wakes up in a storm shelter— hungover, disoriented, face-to-face and alone with the stranger who took her.
Kellen lives by rules. Strict ones. Lines he never crosses.
She breaks them without even trying.
What begins as captivity becomes a battle of control and defiance, every clash pulling them closer to a slow unraveling neither of them planned and neither can stop.
Her life was simple.
Now it belongs to the man who never breaks his rule…
Mira Renner is a Kentucky-based author who believes the best love stories are messy, emotional, and worth fighting for.
She writes character-driven romantic suspense with slow-burn tension, emotional healing, found family, morally gray protectors, and resilient heroines who have to weather a few storms before finding their way home.
When she’s not writing, she’s reading, spending time with her family, or adding books to her TBR faster than she can read them.
Rules of the Storm is her debut novel and the first book in The Pressure Beneath series.
If you're looking for a feel good romance this is a good place to start! Rules of the Storm is heavy in the romance department compared to the suspense that is present. The communication between the main two characters was refreshing. I look forward to the next book.
I enjoyed this book and it kept me interested and wondering how it would end. It seemed like our MMC's would never get together and then once they did that they were not going to be able to stay together.
I really enjoyed this story. Romance plays a major role in the book, but the family drama and suspense is very much present as well.
The story gets off to a strong start, quickly drawing you in. Tension also builds rapidly between the two main characters.
However, I found the middle section a bit slow. The plotline about the kidnapping and the people involved is kind of sidelined for quite a while, having only a few discussions here and there but no real development. The focus shifts primarily to the attraction between the two MCs during this part of the story.
The suspense eventually picks up again, and the story returns to action and plot twists offering us a captivating read.
Overall, while there are some slower sections, the story is good, and the characters are lovable. I definitely want to read the second book, which will focus on Wren.
I received an advance copy and I'm leaving my honest opinion willingly.
I went into this expecting tension, forced proximity, and a morally questionable man who would make me question my standards. What I did not expect was to be emotionally body checked by two people carrying enough pain to fill every page.
The story wastes no time throwing you into Zoe's nightmare. She wakes up trapped, hungover, confused, and completely at the mercy of a man she has never met.
It immediately creates that uncomfortable feeling of wondering who this man is, what his intentions are, and whether there is any line he won't cross. I was completely hooked because every answer only seemed to create five more questions.
What surprised me most was Zoe herself. On the surface she comes across as sarcastic, funny, stubborn, and strong enough to challenge every ounce of control Kellen tries to maintain. She refuses to be easily broken, and watching her push back against him made their conversations some of my favorite moments.
But underneath all that confidence is someone carrying wounds so deep that they quietly shape every decision she makes. The more her layers were peeled back, the more my heart hurt for her. All she truly wanted was someone who wouldn't walk away. That realization hit me so much harder than I expected.
Then there is Kellen. I know how ridiculous this is going to sound out of context, but somehow this man became one of the biggest green flags while simultaneously being the man who drugs, kidnaps, and imprisons the heroine. Stay with me. His entire world revolves around rules and control, yet the moment Zoe crashes into his life those carefully built walls begin to crack.
He is unbelievably patient with her, never rushing her emotions or forcing a connection. Instead, you watch two damaged people slowly chip away at each other's defenses until something neither of them planned starts to grow. It is complicated, messy, and surprisingly beautiful. This is absolutely a slow burn, and I mean the kind that lets every glance, every conversation, and every moment of trust build naturally.
The chemistry quietly simmers for so long that when it finally ignites, it feels completely earned. The emotional connection became just as important as the romance, which made every intimate moment land even harder.
What really elevated this book for me was the emotional depth. Both Zoe and Kellen carry heartbreaking pasts, and the author never rushes through those experiences. The details matter. The emotions matter. Every revelation adds another piece to the puzzle instead of feeling like drama thrown in for shock value.
I found myself completely invested in both of their histories, and yes, I cried. More than once. I also have to give Wren the appreciation she deserves. She is the kind of best friend every heroine needs. Loyal, supportive, protective, and the definition of a girl's girl. She brought warmth into a story filled with heavy emotions and reminded me that healthy friendships deserve just as much attention as the romance.
The plot twists? They just kept coming. Every time I thought I had figured something out, another revelation completely changed my perspective. I felt like the book kept sneaking up behind me and landing emotional sucker punches when I least expected them. I loved that nothing felt predictable.
One of my favorite little moments was when the title finally clicked into place inside the story. I always appreciate when an author makes the title feel meaningful instead of it simply existing on the cover, and this one absolutely delivered. If you're thinking about picking this up, go in prepared for an emotional ride.
The difficult parts are not there simply because of the kidnapping premise. The real heaviness comes from watching two deeply wounded people confront years of loneliness, trauma, grief, and fear while slowly learning what it means to trust another person.
That is what stayed with me long after I finished the last page.
This book challenged my emotions in ways I never expected. It made me laugh, broke my heart, restored it piece by piece, and reminded me that sometimes the strongest love stories are the ones built between two people who believe they're too broken to deserve one.
.Rules of the Storm surprised me in the best way. While I initially struggled with the title and cover because they did not fully capture the strength of the story inside, the novel itself quickly won me over.
From the moment Kellan spots Zoe, his assigned "target," walking into a bar to celebrate her birthday, the chemistry between them is undeniable. Their connection is immediate, but it is the witty banter that truly makes them shine. Every conversation feels natural, playful, and full of tension, making it impossible not to root for them. Mira Renner has a talent for writing dialogue that feels authentic while also revealing each character's vulnerabilities.
Much of the story takes place in a secluded farmhouse in rural Kentucky, where Zoe is forced to wait while her fate hangs in the balance. At times, this slower pacing can feel repetitive, but the developing relationship between Zoe and Kellan more than compensates. Their growing trust, emotional honesty, and undeniable attraction keep the pages turning even when the external action slows.
Kellan is an especially compelling hero. He is a fundamentally good man forced to do morally questionable things, believing they serve a greater purpose. Zoe recognizes his true nature surprisingly quickly, which may stretch believability for some readers, but their emotional connection is convincing enough that it works. It becomes clear that beneath his hardened exterior, Kellan is doing everything he can to protect her.
Both characters carry painful family histories filled with trauma, and watching them slowly heal together is one of the novel's greatest strengths. Their romance feels earned, and their passion radiates from every chapter.
Although the story includes government interference, espionage, and long-buried family secrets, those elements often take a back seat to the intimate character development unfolding within the walls of the farmhouse. Rather than feeling like a weakness, this focus allows the emotional core of the novel to flourish.
I also appreciated how Wren, despite clearly being an intriguing character, remained mostly in the background. She has enough presence to leave readers eager for her story without overshadowing Zoe and Kellan's relationship. That restraint pays off beautifully.
This is ultimately a character-driven romantic that succeeds because of its exceptional relationship building. I finished the book excited to continue the series and can't wait to read Wren's story.
A heartfelt character driven romance with outstanding relationship development.
