I won this book from Goodreads First Reads giveaways.

This book was just ok to me. I liked the idea of the story, but I wasn't a big fan of the writing style. Especially the sex scenes. I'm sorry but saying things like "her channel" just isn't sexy. There were parts of the story that I enjoyed, just not the whole book. It was an easy read though.

Great Read

Matthias makes a perfect alpha hero, smart, strong, and more than capable of protecting his wife and baby, whether she wants him to or not. This book is filled with a lovable cast of characters that keep the reader turning the pages.
A very enjoyable read.

"Witness to Murder" is the debut novel of new romance writer Mackayla Daniels. The novel begins with an opening scene where the reader first meets the protagonist heroine, Annie. Annie is a court reporter living in a small North Carolina city who is living with her roommate, Candy. One day Annie finds herself taking a deposition for a woman who is in the federal witness protection program. While taking the deposition, the federal witness and federal marshalls guarding the witness are located by a drug cartel leader's gang that the witness will take down. Everyone at the deposition is killed, except Annie, who manages an escape. Of course, the attack happens after Annie has recorded the witness's testimony. The cartel gang destroys the tapes and the written record, but since Annie escaped, Annie is now the remaining piece of evidence that the cartel leader needs to destroy.
Fortunately, Annie has a few resources of her own. She has enough attitude to at least try to fight back when doesn't have a clue how. She has a caring brother and parents. She has a witty, entertaining roommate. Oh, and she has a really handsome fiancee who is a detective on the local police force. Quickly the cartel begins to close in on Annie, so her fiancee whisks her away to his remote family hometown in Tennessee, with a brief stop for an elopement wedding. Matthias, her new husband, vows he can keep her safe - but can he?
The novel continues with Annie and Matthias trying to remain undiscovered by the drug cartel while dealing with many newlywed issues. The strain of Annie being pursued brings out a protective and at times domineering side in Matthias.
I enjoy romantic suspense novels for strong women protagonists put under a great deal of pressure. I can relate to these women who value their families. There is often a character arc relating to a woman gaining a trait that many women hope to develop. Annie learns bravery and courage in a dangerous situation, while also learning to trust her new husband - not an easy task under pressure.
I don't really read these books for the steamy scenes, so I personally can't comment on the ones in this book. If that is important to you, all I can say is that it is a romance novel with a newlywed, eloped couple. There were several scenes in the book I just glossed over so I could get back to the action I like to read.
The plot of the story moved quickly and held my interest. This is a debut novel from self published author, and it is absolutely an entertaining read. I must say, however, that I found the timeline a little hard to follow. The author does give lots of details along the way to imply how much time had elapsed between chapters, but having to stop and think about it does break up the flow of reading. Perhaps putting in Month and day when each chapter starts could help remedy this. I wouldn't want to see a year added because it would date the book to quickly. I am sure there are other writing devices that could be used to accomplish the same goal.
Overall, this is an action-packed novel that was a great little escape for me to read.

First, I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I did enjoy it, but it wasn't my favorite. It started out well, but the character development just wasn't there. I found myself wanting to know more about the earlier lives of the characters (but since this was the second book in the series, perhaps they were better introduced in the first book). It also seemed that the author used sex scenes not to further the action, but as something to fill pages.

The story - Annie is a court reporter and witnesses several murders while she is recording audio and video at the deposition of a witness who is currently part of the Witness Protection Program. She comes face to face with the killer and several of his henchmen, and must run for her life.

Her fiance Matthias is a detective and he suspects that Victor Garcia, the kingpin behind the murders, has at least one informant within the U S Marshall's office because of the site and timing of the murders. Also, Annie finds herself in possession of a key piece of evidence, but the story never really addresses it completely.

The book basically tells the story of Annie and Matthias' attempts to keep her safe and out of Victor's clutches.

I felt this was a good, but not great, book. It did hold my attention, but didn't beg to be finished the way many of my other books do. I will keep an eye on this author though, because I do believe she'll be able to improve as she continues writing.
