Reed Ferguson returns in another page-turner mystery set in the world of professional baseball.
When Charlie Preston, second baseman for the Colorado Rockies, is suspected of murdering his best friend, Pete Westhaven, he turns to Denver private investigator Reed Ferguson for help. Reed believes in Charlie’s innocence, so he takes the case. But as Reed digs into the murder victim’s past, he quickly finds himself ensnared in the clandestine underworld of illegal steroids. As the lists of suspects grows, Reed battles not only to solve the crime, but also to save the person he loves most.
All of Reed’s pals are back in this humorous tale with a clever homage to film noir.
Great for fans who love a fast-paced, humorous read, without a lot of swearing or sex.
From the time she was ten and tried to write her own detective series in the fashion of the Hardy Boys, Renée Pawlish has been developing her craft. Along with creative writing classes, Renée studied great writers like Dashiell Hammett, Rex Stout, Stephen King, Sue Grafton and many more. Once Renée graduated from college, she began her first novel. Now, all these years later, she has penned numerous books in a variety of genres.
Renée was born in California, but has lived most of her life in Colorado. When she's not hiking, cycling, or chasing ballplayers for autographs, she is writing mysteries and thrillers. She also has some middle grade novels waiting to be published.
Renée loves to travel and has visited numerous countries around the world. She has also spent many summer days at her parents' cabin in the hills outside of Boulder, which was the inspiration for the setting of Taylor Crossing in her novel Nephilim: Genesis of Evil.

The Nephilim Trilogy Nephilim Genesis of Evil Books Two and Three soon to be released
The Noah Winter YA Adventure Series The Emerald Quest
Take Five A short story collection that includes a Reed Ferguson tale.
The Sallie House: Exposing the Beast Within A non-fiction book about one of the most haunted houses in America.
The trend continues: I still have not read a Reed Ferguson mystery that I didn't enjoy. The only reason that I am not sad when I finish one is that I know there are many more yet to read. If Ms. Pawlish ever decides to stop writing Reed Ferguson (and Dewey Webb) mysteries... then I will be sad.
In this, the ninth of the Ferguson cases, a suspected murderer's parents are friends with Reed's parents; so, of course, Reed is recommended to clear the suspects name. The one suspected of murder is a fan-favorite player on the Colorado Rockies baseball team; the victim worked for the team and was a lifelong friend of the suspect. As always, Reed solves the case -- with the requisite amount of red herrings and misdirection (and with the help of his friends Ace, Deuce, and Cal).
All in all, a pleasant read. (And I solved it three pages before Reed did!)
I’m enjoying the Reed Ferguson series but they’re getting pretty predictable.
I was able to identify the murderer very early on, but it was enjoyable just to see how it all would play out.
But it for the most part is clean, despite it not being true it seems every other chapter we’re in a indirect Reed and Willie make whoopi. Yippee 😴
But since that is as common as it gets in just about every mystery series, I’ve one to accept it.
I do like the references to classic film noirs, Cape Fear, reminds me of it, then I wish I could watch it, but Prime video doesn’t include it like most film noirs, or just about any decent movie these days.
15 stars!!!! Wow, did Reed get talked into this one!!!! It was a mess for Reed to find out what had happened and whodunit. He got the gang to help even got Cal out of his house at one point, because too many people to watch. His client is in the lime light and Reed had to figure out fast to keep his client's career in tact. Boy, did he earn his money on this and more and got Willie involved more ways than one. You have to read this to find out details!!!! YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!!!!!!
I've read all previous 8 Reed Ferguson mysteries and they've all been great. This one's my favorite. I won't say why so I don't spoil it for anyone else. Thank you Renee Pawlish for giving me many hours of interesting stories to enjoy! Okay on to the next book for me! 😊
A detective story revolving around a baseball player - right up my alley! This is another great addition to this series. Renee does well with these scenic Colorado-based mysteries.
When a Rockies player is accused of murdering his friend, he hires Reed to find out who did it. It is much more complicated and intense than that it delves into the world of illegal steroids.
Baseball player Charlie Preston is a suspect in the murder of friend and steroid provider Pete Westhaven. He employs Reed to prove him innocent. An entertaining modern mystery
Kindle Unlimited or else was on a freebie day, yes still going thru/back thru them to make sure read and reviewed them all, including the sets, short stories, novellas.

OK, so I read the Reed Ferguson books out of order. OK, so now I have no more Reed Ferguson books to read. What will I do? I know I've said it in reviews of Pawlish's earlier works, but Renée Pawlish just keeps getting better & better. Pawlish's continuing development of her lead character, This her best work to date! We get a Colorado Rockies baseball player suspected of murder. Will our intrepid hero wed the lovely Willie? He has to pop the question first. Will he do that in this book? You won't find out here, buy the book, read the book, get hooked on Renee Pawlish as I have. Oh, by the way...Detective Spillman has her stories to tell, I just bought Take Five: Mystery Short Stories by Renee Pawlish, that's what I'm doing next.
The Reed Ferguson mystery series:
• Book 1: This Doesn't Happen In The Movies • Book 2: Reel Estate Rip-off • Book 3: The Maltese Felon • short story: Elvis And The Sports Card Cheat • Book 4: Farewell, My Deuce • Book 5: Out Of The Past • Book 6: Torch Scene • Book 7: The Lady Who Sang High • Book 8: Sweet Smell Of Sucrets • Book 9: The Third Fan • Book 10:Night of the Hunted
I have read all the Reed Ferguson books except one, which I intend to read soon, and i was not disappointed with this one. Reed is back with another mystery to solve. He is in the dark from the beginning with very little information to go on. He has to find the clues and solve the case before an innocent man goes to jail. All the favorite characters, Willie, Cal, Detective Spillman and of course the Goofball Brothers, Ace and Deuce are there to help. An interesting mystery with a dose of humor. A great read I would recommend to others. This is a great stand alone but I do recommend you read this series in order. You get to know Reed and his friends more with each book. You see how Reed thinks, you see relationships change and develop and you see characters grow. I was provided an advance reader copy of this book by the author. This did not effect review one way or the other. I was hooked on this series after the first book.
I received an advance reader copy from the author. My review has not been influenced by this. Love Renee Pawlish & love, love, love her Reed Ferguson mysteries. Very good character driven plot. Witty, tongue in cheek dialogue & one of the most important questions in a young P.I.s life to be asked, can Reed solve the crime before its too late? :-)
I am enjoying this series more and more. I gave this read 4 stars as I probably would not re read this book, but, I look forward to reading more in this series. It is good day detective read. I enjoy the author's references to all the old detective stories from movies and books.
Each one of these books just keeps getting better and better. I sincerely hope that the Hollywood agents are reading them, too, because this is a completely cinematic series with an intriguing cast of characters that would sparkle on screen! Keep 'em coming, Renee, these are really great stories!
I have enjoyed all of this series. I hope Renee keeps writing this series. The ending was novel. The characters are so loveable, especially Deuce and Ace.p
