Autobody: His Final Masterpiece

For more than thirty years, people have disappeared across rural Ontario.

A mechanic closes his shop and never returns home. A retired teacher vanishes without explanation. A young woman is last seen driving along a familiar county road. Their names slowly fade from public memory, their files boxed away as unsolved disappearances, tragic accidents, or lives abandoned without warning.

No one ever connects them.

Until someone finally does.

As forgotten case files begin revealing impossible similarities, investigators uncover a pattern that should never have existed. Each discovery points toward the same quiet farming community, where generations of families have built lives, raised children, and trusted their neighbours without question.

Somewhere inside that community is a man who has spent decades perfecting the art of remaining invisible.

He has never acted in anger. He has never left a witness. He has never made the mistake of believing he could be caught.

Now, for the first time, the past is beginning to move.

AUTOBODY is a dark psychological thriller about obsession, deception, and the terrifying reality that evil rarely announces itself. It lives behind familiar faces, ordinary routines, and the people we believe we know best.

About the author

Carter Vale

Carter Vale writes psychological thrillers and true crime shaped by one belief: the most disturbing stories are the ones that could happen.

His journey as an author began after surviving a deeply personal true-crime experience that changed the course of his life. What started as an attempt to make sense of those events became Above the Deep 6, a memoir that explores trauma, survival, and the search for truth. The experience also revealed something unexpected, a passion for storytelling that would grow far beyond a single book.

Today, Carter brings that same authenticity to fiction. His novels explore obsession, deception, and the quiet darkness that can exist beneath ordinary lives. Rather than relying on spectacle or gratuitous violence, he builds suspense through atmosphere, psychological tension, and characters whose choices feel unsettlingly real. His stories ask a simple question: What happens when the person everyone trusts is hiding the unimaginable?

Whether writing memoir or fiction, Carter believes the strongest stories leave readers questioning what they thought they understood about human nature. Every book is an invitation to look beneath the surface, where the most dangerous secrets are often hidden in plain sight.

"The most frightening stories aren't the ones we imagine. They're the ones we recognize."

3.75 stars. This one started off a little slow for me, but the premise had me intrigued enough to keep going. I was really curious to see how all the pieces of the puzzle would eventually fit together, and once they did, I was hooked.

One of the creepiest parts of this story was the reminder that you never truly know someone. People can seem one way on the surface while hiding an entirely different reality underneath, and that underlying tension kept me invested.

About halfway through, the pacing really took off, and from that point on, I flew through the rest of the book. Watching everything unravel was satisfying, suspenseful, and made the slower beginning worth it. If you enjoy psychological thrillers that keep you guessing and gradually reveal the truth, this one is worth picking up.

I love psychological thrillers and Carter Vale did not disappoint. Barry, Barry, Barry. Now there was a conundrum wrapped up tight. Carter fooled me with this character. There is a saying for magicians. They will have you looking one way but steal your watch when you aren’t looking. Something like that. I was gripping the pages when I found out Barry was not what everyone thought he was.
why Carter, why. I will call her “Linda’s friend”. That part was difficult for me to read. I loved the way you wrote her. The relationship she had with her husband, it made perfect sense when I read the ending. He must have been so devastated.
Wonderful book! A must read!

I had the opportunity to read this book and it was fantastic I felt like I was watching a movie at the beginning you learn so much about the setting the places the characters and then it gets to the car and the person and the investigation starts from there to learn about what happened why and other things are coming out with similarities to the one they are dealing with so you do go back and forth between the murder investigation and the auto body shop where you learn so much about a guy named Barry I was so thrilled to read this book and I know he had more and I will be reading them as well
