ਹਾਣੀ - ਜਸਵੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੰਵਲ (1961)
This novel published in 1961, is a poignant exploration of the trials and tribulations faced by the youth in their quest for meaningful companionship (ਹਾਣ). The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of a society where economic struggles and caste dynamics shape the lives of its characters.
At the heart of the story is Dhanto, the daughter of Phila and Tapi, who find themselves trapped in the clutches of debt. The desperate attempt to break free from this vicious cycle leads Phila to consider a harrowing decision – selling his own daughter. However, fate takes an unexpected turn, bringing Dhanto face-to-face with the companion (ਹਾਣੀ) she had longed for.
The novel meticulously delves into the societal barriers of economic hardship and caste subordination, which cast dark shadows over the characters’ aspirations. The hurdles they face reflect a larger truth – that those in positions of power and wealth often exploit and oppress those who are less fortunate.
The cast of characters is intricately woven, with figures like Beero, Nikka, and Labha adding depth to the story. Each character contributes a unique perspective to the overarching themes of love, companionship, and the struggle for a better life.
