This book was sent to me by the author in exchange for a honest book review.
My overall opinion: This book is a good read. The characters are funny and easy to relate to. There were a few plot twists here and there. I liked how the author let us see the characters develop.
The reasons why this book received 3 stars is because of the amount of proof reading errors. There were words missing, comas missing, wrong use of words (you, you’re), full stops in the middle of sentences, missing apostrophes, and proper nouns not capitalized. There also wasn’t a lot of details about the characters or the settings of each scene. The last reason is because the book ended abruptly and I didn’t feel like it was a real end.
Cons: Abrupt ending. Too many proof reading errors. Not enough details about the characters or settings.
Potential offensive content: Mentions of sex through-out. Scenes of implying sex. Crude language. Swear words through-out. Alcohol mention/use through-out.
Pros: Relatable characters. Humor. Plot twists. Character growth.
I received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Harmony’s best friend Vi gets a new boyfriend and suddenly isn’t as available as she used to be, being pre occupied with her new love. Harmony then meets Troy, a friend of Vi’s boyfriend, and over time Troy and Harmony become good friends, and Troy gradually takes the place of Vi as Harmony’s best friend. Harmony has feelings for Julian who she often spends time with at the computer lab, his shyness and mysteriousness making him an attractive secret love interest. But when Julian returns from summer camp a changed person, Harmony isn’t so sure of her feelings for him anymore and turns to Troy who is becoming more than just a friend to her and is also keeping her secret of Vi’s mother’s serious illness, which even her friend Vi doesn’t know about.
This book was a really great read. The story was easy to follow, with a few plot twists here and there to keep you engaged and the characters are rounded and have depth. When reading this book, I found myself thinking that I knew several people who sounded just like a few of these characters and so I was able to empathise with Harmony on a few levels. The story is so interesting you just want to keep on reading to find out what’s going to happen next. I kept trying to read this book at every available opportunity!
All the characters in this story are real and relatable. Harmony is a very likeable character, from her happy and loving family, to dealing with her first love, friendships, and discovering new experiences as teenagers do. Her best friend Vi seems nice but has a few flaws, and she disappears a lot from Harmony’s life because she is busy with the new boyfriend. Troy is a character that was interesting and developed a lot during the story. When he first came on the scene, I was very distrusting of him, but as the story unfolded, there appeared to be more to Troy than him being a shallow playboy, but I still wonder about any ulterior motives he might have. Julian is an endearing character and started off a genuine, sweet, shy boy, but he goes away to summer camp and on his return he is a changed person, exuding a confidence that wasn’t there before.
There were only a couple of things I didn’t like about this book. One was that I thought it was a little odd that Harmony got extremely upset about finding out about her friend’s mother’s illness. Harmony has not known anyone else to have this illness so it seemed somewhat inappropriate for her to react this way, and I think it should have focussed more on her having issues with keeping such a huge secret and how this will affect her friend Vi as well as her friendship with her, rather than being so upset about someone she didn’t really know or care about having the illness.
Another thing I didn’t like about this book was that there was a fair amount of proofreading errors which started to get irksome. There were words left out of sentences, full stops used in the middle of a sentence, apostrophes not appearing where they should, people’s names not having capital letters, and the wrong word being used eg their and there.
The other thing that I didn’t like was that the story ended quite abruptly and I was shocked when I realised it was the end of the book. I had to check I wasn’t missing a final chapter. It might have been better to finish it on more of an obvious cliff hanger.
This book is part one of a series by the author so I will be hanging out waiting for part two. I really enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it if you enjoy reading contemporary stories about coming of age.
This book was sent to me by the author in exchange for my honest review. This book was an easy read, very fluent and with some plot twists that keep you focused and the characthers are well done and have a certain depht. The story itself is interesting and really portraits some aspects of a teenagers life, like having to take care of your friends and family, while taking care of yourself and other things like that. You can see how the relatuionships between Harmony and Troy and Harmony and Julian develop as Harmony herself also does. It's a very educating heart-touching story and every teenager and parent should read it, since I think it could help both to see from other point of view. I think this book only has two major mistakes: 1- It has so many grammatical mistakes that even I, a non-native speaker with only the foreign language level of english from public education, could pick up on them! 2- The end was so abrupt that I tought that the epub had been damaged and had to check out wath was happening. If you like contemporary reads you'll appreciate this story.
