I feel as if I just attended a full semester course on bee keeping. While it took me several days to completely absorb this book, as I had to read, and re-read some sections to completely understand (its a non-fiction book) its scientific meaning. The book was well-written, and detailed. It addressed things that I hadn't even thought of yet. I am currently trying to create a stable and productive ecosphere for my red wiggler worms and my compost bin. Not only does this book address all of the useful variety of bees, and how to create a sustainable environment for them, it addresses predators, placement and production options. I have a need for bees, and fear I am a long way off from learning how to implement my needs, but as my garden grows, the need for bee keeping (frightens me) is essential. I have a small green acres farm, and this book will be used as an encyclopedia of reference once I get going. A semester costs several hundred dollars at our local colleges, this book was 2.99. I have already loaned it to a friend, and cant wait to get their response. I thought of making my own hive, but decided on a pre-assembled hive, buy some bees and let them do all the work. I see it is not as easy as that. I am very thankful for the resource, and amazed at the diligent research that went into writing this amazing book. Imagine buying 40,000 bees by FedEx? Thank you for this amazing complete resource on beekeeping. The book makes it sound easy once you get to the end and put all the facts together. But I know I am going to stumble into a lot of errors. Hopefully the book will keep me on track. Get the Buzz on Beekeeping in YOUR backyard.
As someone completely new to beekeeping, I found Backyard Beekeeping by Gary Bryant to be the perfect starting point. The book is clearly written for beginners, with no prior knowledge required, and it walks you through every step of the process—from understanding different types of bees to building your own hive and even managing a colony in a city or suburban setting.
What I appreciated most is how approachable and encouraging the tone is. Bryant breaks down what could be a complicated hobby into simple, actionable steps that made me feel confident enough to get started with my own hive. It even covers fascinating topics like the role of the queen bee and the fertilization process—things I had no idea about before reading.
Whether you're just curious about beekeeping or ready to jump in, this book is an excellent resource. It makes the idea of harvesting your own raw honey not just possible, but totally doable. Highly recommended for anyone thinking of getting into backyard beekeeping!
