FLIPP the Switch: Strengthen Executive Function Skills is a practical book written for parents and educators by parents and educators. The target audience is anyone who works with young people aged 3-22 who are disorganized, inflexible, impulsive, and who struggle with planning or problem solving. Readers will learn about executive function (EF) and how EF skills contribute to success in school, at home, and in work environments. Most importantly, readers will receive specific instructions, templates, and how-to scenarios for 25 strategies, five strategies for each of the five FLIPP components – flexibility, leveled emotionality, impulse control, planning, and problem solving. This book is indispensable for anyone who wants to minimize conflict, maximize on-task behavior, and support positive social-emotional development in a child or student with challenging behavior.
Either the title should say for children or I must not understand executive dysfunction or because this book was written for what appears to be small children or mentally handicapped adults. The majority of the book is about social skills. I was hoping it would offer techniques to build executive function skills for people of all ages. But unless your executive dysfunction results in your inability to see a dentist or not act like a 5 year old, I don’t think this book will help you.
I was hoping this book would serve as a guide for how I can incorporate Executive Functioning into my school’s SEL curriculum, but that was not the case. Instead, this book’s primary value, which is a vital one, is as a companion to Ross Greene’s seminal Lost at School. Where Greene’s book provides the philosophy, paradigm shift, and data collection tools, FLIPP the Switch provides lots of practice strategies for helping students develop their lagging skills.
Hello, I read this book in order to better assist the students that I help on a daily basis. This book is organized in a very easy to understand format and has helpful tips. I recommend this book to educators, paraeducators, and anyone wanting to improve their executive functioning skills.
