In a world being overtaken by darkness, Alira has been fed one truth for the majority of her life. But after never quite feeling settled in the ways she’s been taught to live—ways that keep her small and insignificant—she begins to realize that not everything may be as it seems.
As Alira works to break free from her constraints, the Unknown begins to reveal itself. The problem is, who can she trust? Who is trying to help her, and who is simply trying to control her?
Throughout the story, I found myself holding my breath and trying to determine the right path for Alira, constantly questioning whether she was making the right choices. Who should we be suspicious of in a good way, and who should we be suspicious of in a bad way? These questions kept me wanting to dive deeper into the story, and I definitely found myself not wanting to put it down.
I felt the need to continue reading to find out where this story would go, and there were certainly some great scenes throughout. However, there were also large sections where the storyline seemed to lag, and I felt the writing could become repetitive in what it was telling us. I also didn’t get the buildup in the action scenes that I was hoping for from this story, though maybe that was just me.
Overall, I was intrigued by Alira’s journey and the mystery surrounding the world she’s been raised in. There was enough here to keep me reading and wanting to know what happens next, but I did feel the pacing and repetition took away from some of the story’s potential.

This is an ARC review, I was given an advance copy and these are my honest opinions.
This is a slow burn awakening for the FMC. Alira is in an arranged marriage and both bring secrets of their own to the betrothal. The only thing that’s clear is they care deeply about each other. Especially since their engagement was determined when they were younger.
He’s the broody prince and she’s the powerful Sanctum girl.
But when an evil grows stronger and threatens everything they know they must join forces with outsiders and must figure out who they can trust to overcome their common enemy.
Brannoc enters Alira’s life and the connection is immediate. However, she’s still engaged to the prince.
The author’s voice is strong in this book and I look forward to the next book in the series!

I very much enjoyed this book- in fact, I put it down because I didn’t want it to be over. I loved the main character the way Alira developed relationships with her found family, drew conclusions about who she should or shouldn’t trust, and how she grew into her power and herself. There were also plot twists I did not see coming.
The magic system and world building were unique to the story and wonderfully and artfully described.
