Still the Eldest Daughter
Still the Eldest Daughter
by Kaylin Weir is a collection of poems that follows a high-achieving woman who grows up believing she will only belong if she's useful, productive, or impressive.
Through scenes of childhood, corporate hustle, marriage, therapy, motherhood, friendship, and the emotional labor of caregiving, this collection traces the evolution of the "eldest " the hyper-responsible girl who becomes the woman holding everything together while quietly unraveling underneath it all.
Still the Eldest Daughter explores the messier process of calming a nervous system shaped by perfectionism, loosening the grip of over-functioning, and learning to build a life you no longer need to escape from.
For eldest daughters (by birth order or experience), mothers, caregivers, helpers, over thinkers, and "good girls" trying to remember who they are beneath performance, productivity, and praise.

Such a gorgeous and raw collection that made me feel seen as an eldest daughter. The story from childhood, to young adulthood, marriage, kids, and returning to work had me turning the page after each poem, intrigued by both the narrative itself and the way the persona describes her experiences through the lens of someone always used to noticing other people’s needs before her own. I’ll definitely keep coming back to this when I need a reminder to slow down and be okay with uncertainty 💗

I was struck by the honesty of this book. It is clear that it is rooted in genuine life experiences that have been explored in depth by the author. These poems offer something relevant and relatable for every daughter, mom, and person. Overall, the content of these poems is a perfect equilibrium of unapologetic, raw, and optimistic.
I also loved the structural variations from poem to poem when it comes to rhythm, rhyme, format, word choice, figurative language and overall style. These variations made reading this book really engaging. I loved this book and will certainly be reading it again.

I will be returning to this collection over and over and over again. Each poem is spellbinding and I found myself in so many of these pages. I am an eldest daughter of an eldest daughter, eldest granddaughter and niece and cousin. I felt so seen throughout this entire book. I was mesmerized and read the whole thing in one sitting, and then again to savor it. Even if you aren’t the eldest daughter, if you find yourself in the cycle of perfectionism and feeling responsible for everyone while feeling like no one cares for you the way you care for them, this book will be an oasis for you. The author wrote so personally of her own life and experiences and still made it so relatable. I love that there are many different types of poetry within the overarching theme. Do yourself a favor and go ahead and order this book!

In still the Eldest Daughter, Kaylin has woven together a collection of poetry that truly shares the challenge of staying soft and tender in a world that prefers us hard and productive. Her insight as a therapist, mother, high-achiever, and journey within embodied healing make this a truly one-of-a-kind read. Funny nods to millennial culture (asking Jeeves, Sofee shorts!) intermixed with thoughtful, authentic prose about marriage, loss, and parenting had me on the best kind of roller coaster of naming and feeling all my emotions. While this is a phenomenal resource and read for the eldest daughters, it is truly accessible for all women struggling to find, honor, and become the truest version of ourself in this loud, chaotic world.

This is a fantastic book for any eldest daughter or anyone who identifies with the theme of perfectionism, people-pleasing, hyper-responsibility and more. Kaylin tells a thought provoking story via poetry of those themes through many eras of a woman’s life and how we keep confronting the character traits that we developed early. Sometimes those are helping us and sometimes they are hindering us, and oftentimes it’s hard to tell the difference. She speaks to that experience, and the nuance that an eldest daughter experiences as she navigates life. I felt completely seen—it was as if she had a window into so many of my own experiences.

This book is such a beautiful, honest reflection on what it means to be the eldest daughter. Kayla's poetry speaks to so many of us on multiple levels. She touches on topics that we dont hear enough about in the poetry space-like invisible expectations, lingering feelings from our childhood roles, and old emotions that can be reignited in intensity once we become mothers ourselves. This is a really thoughtful read for anyone who has ever felt like they had to be the strong one, and are simply exhausted. I am a psychologist, and now I have it in our waiting room, just in case anyone needs to feel extra seen right before their therapy session!

I felt so seen in this collection.
Kaylin Weir writes in a way that feels deeply personal but also profoundly relatable. There were several poems I had to pause after reading to fully reflect on how immensely I felt the words.
This is a collection you can return to over and over again and still leave having learned or felt something new. Her words are comforting and validating, encouraging and uplifting.
Whether you are an eldest daughter in your family or in the way you’ve always navigated the world, you’ll feel so cared for in these pages. I’ve already gotten two copies to gift to friends. This is a must read!

Kaylin Weir’s Still the Eldest Daughter illuminates the adaptive patterns eldest daughters develop—the overachieving, the perfectionism, the outsized sense of responsibility, the fierce independence—in order to belong. Her poems reveal how the past continues to live through the present in these patterns. They are the imprint of our childhood roles on our adult lives—patterns that have both served us and kept us stuck, often in equal measure. With tenderness and precision, she captures the lived experience of the eldest daughter, making us feel at once deeply seen and less alone.

For anyone who has ever identified as an eldest daughter, even if not by birth order, these poems will strike a chord. Kaylin writes with her whole heart and puts words on feelings in a way that made me feel seen as I am while at the same time helping me understand myself in new ways. The poems on motherhood were particularly powerful for me as someone raising three young kids. I can't wait to give this book to other women in my life and will return to these poems often over the years.

Reading this collection as a whole creates an incredible emotional momentum. The Kaylin captures grief, joy, and the immense pressures of womanhood with incredible vulnerability and grace. It evokes a quiet, profound sense of gratitude that stays with you long after the final page. A beautiful, deeply resonant work of art.

Like a nostalgia fix for my millennial eldest daughter soul. Kaylin writes so beautifully and truly touches on experiences, thoughts and emotions I have never been able to put into words. As a therapist, and an eldest daughter, I cannot recommend enough.
